8:33 am
high winds and treacherous roads for today. >> so much so that most of the -- all of the highway folks have been advising us not to go out on to the roads until late on sunday. we have charlie gischlar. you've been riding this out for the last several hours. what are you dealing with now? >> i have breaking news within your area. down in ocean city, there's some flooding that -- because of the coastal flooding of the nature of this storm, anything south of the u.s. 50 draw bridge between 2nd street and division street on coastal highway is closed because of flooding. closer to home, we're dealing with jackknifed tractor-trailers on southbound 270 near montross. some of the lawns are blocked there. the big, heavy beauty low trucks are going to try to get him
8:34 am
unstuck. a wlot of folks wlot of folks w passenger car and try to get out, you'll probably get stuck. >> are your crews on the beltway to clear out the snow right now? >> yes. we've been in motion. there's a plowing operation. there is something to push. there are plows out there, fo. they're forming the plow chains. it's a continuous process but we'll get through it. >> how do you measure success with this sort of operation. you clear the road. you know you still have hours of snowfall ahead of you. you'll have to clear that road again. >> if we don't have to shut a road down like a highway, that's a good thing.
8:35 am
if we continue to keep plugging forward with plowing operations, that's successful in itself. >> what are the plans? we know we've been talking about having enough crews and resources. what happens come sunday and monday when some people will really have to come back to work. >> we're not going to stop until we have everything back to its full dimension again and all the highway lanes open and down to bare pavement. i'm not saying that's going to happen on sunday. >> charlie gischlar. just to reiterate about ocean city, what have you closed. >> coastal highway, maryland 528 and philadelphia avenue down there, one of the parallel routes. you have a full moon with a high tide and this storm pushing a
8:36 am
lot of water. the inlet and downtown ocean city. >> any other major road closings we should know about. >> they're not really closed it's lanes here and there. we deploy the large wreckers in strategic air i don't so when that happens kae can get in there to get it re-open again. >> we have crews fanned out throughout the region to give you an up close look at what it looks like. >> adam tuss. >> sitting pretty in the back seat, driven around in style. >> it will be this kind of morning, right , adam? >> look at that. >> who are you working with this morning? >> i actually do want to say, bj forte brought a coffee machine
8:37 am
in the 4 by 4. that's how we are rolling around today. we are out here experiencing the conditions all over place. you were talking about state highway administration vehicles being broken down an need something service. here's a perfect example of why you shouldn't come out today. we're talking about snow throughs that are breaking down on the side of the road. we've seen a number of these situations with snowplows. this guy clearly needs a tire change. he's sitting on the side of the road to get help. the the snowplows you would think have the priority. kind of like a pit crew. that's not the way it's working out for this guy. he's sitting here on the side of
8:38 am
the road, waiting for help. if you decide you're going to take your corolla or prius out, it's not worth it. we've been in d.c., we're heeded to maryland. you don't want to come out here and just think you'll be able to go around. as with snowplows, they're pushing the snow into banks. you might think you're doing okay on a road like route 7 or rock have many pike. then you take a road or left. you're aring into a know bank that's four or fee feet high. we saw suvs stuck, snowplows and state troopers are out here doing their thing, helping everyone. the best way i can describe the scene right now, remember that
8:39 am
scene from "empire strikes back" where they're having the battle in the snow? that's what it's like right now. the conditions are so rough, you're not seeing things until the last minute. >> i just rewatched "empire strikes back" in preparation for "force awakens." >> we want to continue our team coverage in northern virginia with our bureau chief, julie carey. >> she's live in tysons where they have 19 inches of snow on the ground. that's a lot of snow, julie. >> that is a lot of snow. i'm not going to chat with you as long ased aa.m. just did. he's inside, i'm outside.
8:40 am
a few minutes ago there were a bunch of plows in there pushing and pushing the snow, trying desperately to clear out this intersection. you see the suv going through there. here's a videotape we took a short while ago. it is rough going even if you're in an suv. we saw this car stopped at the night. one of our colleagues brought us gear out on to the field. from his way from nbc to tysons, he saw three stuck vdot plows, fourp struck sucs. you may be able to navigate some of main roads that have been partially cleared.
8:41 am
it might look like it's getting promising but there's a ton of roads on the roads. let's look what 19 inches looks like. this is knee deep. this isn't a drifted in area. i believe it. looks like 19 inches to me. back to you guys in the studio. >> official measurement from julie carey. we want to show you live pictures here near the college park area. >> looks like we have rescue folks on the scene there. >> when you have i had feet of snow. there you go. it's so dangerous, to be out in these conditions, not be able to
8:42 am
see what's ahead of you within first responders saying stay off the roads if you can. >> more coverage of the blizzard of
8:43 am
8:44 am
good morning and welcome back. it's 8:45. you with watching special coverage of the blizzard of 2016. take a look at your screen right
8:45 am
now. storm team 4 radar, this entire region blanketed with snow right now. jewelry carrie -- julie carey 19 inches there. keep the tweets and facebook messages coming. on the right-hand side, a beautiful picture. not a lot of people out right now. >> 13th street in d.c. i think i see a street sign. >> i have to put on my glasses. >> what the guy is doing in the street. >> that's a dog. >> people who like the cold and snow, you like what is that like? >> chuck bell is in the storm team 4 weather center. >> it hasn't eased up too much. that is 13th street. i live about a block from where
8:46 am
that camera is. eun, you know where that is. you used to live across the street before you got promoted and moved into a fancy neighborhood. >> it's not like logan's circle. >> i do believe that area. the snow will continue to pile up around here. blizzard-like conditions through at least noon, maybe going in later into the afternoon as well. we'll be here needless to say all the way through at least another two in southern maryland. share pictures with us at isee@nbcwashington.com. carol crane, middleburg, virginia, a solid 16 inches
8:47 am
there. that poor little fellow, he's not enjoying the snow. time to get a taller right there. let's go out to the man in the snow. tom kierein, good morning, tom. >> we have almost 15 inches out here on the storm team 4 weather deck. just 50 feet away from me, the wind is whipping through an open area here and the snow is drifting. the wind is gusting up to 35 miles an hour. it is snowing. as hard as it has snowed all morning right now here in northwest. this system is stalling out in place, cranking more snow back over us. here are some of the snow totals reported so far, bethesda, 18, tysons corner, 19 inches.
8:48 am
southern maryland around the bay, there it's around 10 to 12 inches. look at the totals, panhandle of west virginia to happener's. front royal to lurey, 14 to 16 inches and then down 95, there are lighter amounts but don't think it's over, fredericksburg and points south. there is a blooming area on the radar of more snow that is developing and it's going to dump another four or five inches there around fredericksburg and points west towards culpepper. the fire departments are recommending you clear now around the hire hydrants that is
8:49 am
near you. god forbid there's a fire. they recommend you clear about three feet around the hydrant of the high snow that has fallen. clear snow away from your heat pump as well. that heat pump will not run near as efficient if it gets clogged with snow. check on the elderly, four things to do as the blizzard continues. here comes the wind, right in my face as the snow is coming down hard. back to you. >> all right. thanks, tom. storm team 4 radar shows the heaviest of the snow, northern montgomery, southern frederick conte out into the northern parts of loudth county. a break in the action across southern maryland for now. this is what we've been watching carefully. i circled this area in southern virginia. watch the snow refire right there. the upper level low is coming through here. it has that extra cold air with it. it's going to generate another push of snow down here to our south. we'll see if we can pin wheel
8:50 am
that here in the metro area. don't turn your back on it. keep shoveling. here's our local model. this is on top of what we already have now. it's forecasting another 5 to 6 inches here, between now and noontime in washington. potentially another eight or ten inches more. by the end of the day, this might be a little aggressive, i don't know we can get another 20 inches in martensburg where we've had as much as 20. do plan on southern maryland, another 3 to 6. most of the metro area, 6 to 12 inches on top of what we already have. our forecast is sitting pretty. saturday morning, 10 to 20 inches already down. maybe 10 or more still coming. heavy snow should go back to moderate snow.
8:51 am
possibility for another 1 to 4 inches during the afternoon hours. the major accumulations will come to a quick end after 8:00 or 9:00 this evening. this is the map we drew days ago. it's still in effect, 20 to 30 on average. if we can just get to 18 inches at national airport, it will be the biggest one since the president's day storm in '79. >> thank you, chuck. that's a huge storm. >> we have the mayor of laurel. what's the latest coming out of laurel? >> heavy snow is still coming down. last time we put a ruler in the snow we had about 14.5 inches. we are seeing heavy winds and snow drifts right now. >> what are your crews and your emergency responders dealing with right now? what is the priority for dealing
8:52 am
with this blizzard in your city? >> we were doing some secondary roads. we've gone back now to our snow emergency routes. it's really coming down. it's causing us some issues on some of the roads in and around the city of laurel, a couple of them, we've had to help them with the plows where they've gotten stuck in the snow. it's coming down at a good pace. we hope people will stay home and stay off the roads. >> have now had to deal with a lot of call for service? are you getting fire calls, medical calls? >> we've had medical call. our police department is responding to calls as well. there's incidents they've had to deal with. our police department has been out with run of their humvees and helping people that are
8:53 am
stuck in the snow as well. >> what will residents and the people that live in your city will have the most challenge with during this blizzard? is it old trees, power lines, hilly roads, cap -- can you tell me that? we have wires coming down, electricity going off in parts of the city. that does concern us. we hope we're prepared to assist those residents when they do that, when the power goes off. if ire using generators they need to be outside away from the house. >> all right. the mayor of laurel, maryland. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> keeping our coverage on the roads now with dylan dreyer. >> you're in elk ridge, maryland, south of baltimore in
8:54 am
howard county there. how's it going? >> well, it's going exactly as we told everybody it would go. that's the reason why we're saying to stay off the roads. they're not good. i mean, i feel guilty saying stay off the roads yet we're the ones driving on the roads. there's nothing else except this other truck. it looks like he's going at a pretty good pace. along i-95, there are areas that the road is plowed and then for a five-mile stretch, it looks like the roads haven't been touched at all. you get stuck in the snow grooves. every teen miles we run into different conditions. you can kind of feel the gusty winds around, too. that reduces that.
8:55 am
>> the off ramps haven't been plowed so they can't get the cars through it. it's kind of a ghost town on 95 north, which ask a great thing because the more people that stay off the roads, the better. the crews can get to work and continue to plow them. in some of those areas that are plowed. we are going to take it slow and trek on to new york. >> i'm curious about your perspective on all of this. as somebody who's seen so many different types of weather, where does this line up in your memory and marveling at weather? >> i would the most fascinating snowstorm ever was last winter when buffalo got six, seven feet of know? a short period of time. that's the evenly time i've seen an area like that are shut down.
8:56 am
it looks like we'll get two feets of snow in philadelphia, new york city, it's an incredible number of people involved with that storm. but you know be, from a storm perspecti perspective, with a storm of this proportion, you expect it to behave this way. the saving grace is that it's happening on a friday night into a saturday. they don't have to be anywhere. they are home. >> that is a good point, dylan. tell us where you're heading and if you've had problems in your travel so far. >> we're on i'm 95. we just left washington, d.c., coming up to baltimore now. our plan is to continue on to new york city. there have been times when you get in the ten-mile stretches where they haven't been plowed where we've been commenting to
8:57 am
ourself in the car, i don't think these trucks will get through it. we'll keep going until our blue mobile gets stuck. we can do a live report from wherever we get stuck. it's been on and off. sometimes i think we're not going to go much further, then the road clears up. >> thank you, dylan, appreciate it. >> safe travels, dylan. >> we'll take a
