right now it's tied with the fourth largest snowstorm on record at reagan national. however, the airport is only providing updates every six hours. so that last update earlier in the evening around 7:00 came in at 17.8 inches.
11:03 pm
dulles, this is the second largest snowstorm on record. 28 inches falling there. wbi marshall almost 30 inches, making this the largest snowstorm on record. here's a look at your snowfall totals. you can see north and west of town, this was the big boom area up around frederick, hagerstown seeing about 34 inches in those areas, here in the district, about 22 inches. in southern maryland we sought a foot or a little bit more. ver on karks the snow is over, but there's another major component to the storm we're going to be feeling. >> we're still going to see the blowing snow across the area, winds at 20 to 25 miles per hour. they're really going to settle by the an, mid part of the day around lunch time. 25, 30-mile-per-hour winds. we'll talk more about those wind chills and the big cleanup that follows in a few. >> right now back to that breaking news. police shutting down all of 270 as well as a significant stretch of i-70. this is 270 at the 109 exit.
11:04 pm
you can see the highway is empty. traffic and accidents wreaked havoc on crews working to clear those roadways. >> let's get to chris gordon near the 270 split where police are actually turning drives away. chris? >> reporter: well, this is the roadblock. state troopers across all the lanes of 270 north turning traffic around, heading back toward the beltway. we were in germantown for snow coverage tonight when we got word that the state is shutting it down. we were among the last vehicles to travel 270. we got on in germantown heading south at about 8:30. the state highway administration told me maryland governor hogan ordered 270 from the beltway to frederick closed so state plows could clear snow without interference from tractor trailers and civilian cars.
11:05 pm
this is what is looked like this afternoon as large trucks and cars became disabled and backed up traffic. the state is sending additional plows to work all night, clearing 270. tonight at 9:00 p.m., we arrived at the rockville state police barracks as this line of troopers were heading to close 270. >> pretty much impassable, and the road condition is deteriorating. so for safety reasons, we're going to shut it down, and we're going to have troopers still maintaining patrol on 270 to help disabled motorists. >> state police will maintain this roadblock all night. the goal is to reopen 270 at 7:00 tomorrow morning. that's the latest from 270. back to you, doreen. >> thank you. as the snow ends, remember to get out and shovel tomorrow to clear the sidewalks. we've seen scenes like this all over the region, d.c., maryland, and virginia, people walking dangerously in the middle of the street because the sidewalks are
11:06 pm
full of snow. as the snow ends, officials are reminding you don't do this. you'll get in the way of plows and first responders and put yourself in danger. >> our mark sea graves was there today when d.c. mayor muriel bowser issued a stern message as the district starts to clean up and dig out from all this snow. >> mark is live in tenleytown in northwest d.c. mark? >> reporter: not a lot of activity here. of course the 7-eleven one of the most popular places up here and one of the only places that are open. for the past half hour or so, all we've seen are snowplows going up and down wisconsin avenue. they're not getting into the side streets of the neighborhoods yet. while d.c. mayor muriel bowser is calling for residents to stay off the streets, she has some good news. she says that d.c. fire and police have been able to keep up with 911 calls with no delays, and the major roads are getting cleared. but she says there is one group that they haven't been able to keep up with, and that is the
11:07 pm
calls that they've been getting from disabled residents and senior citizens asking for help. >> we are also being inundated by calls from d.c. residents who need help shoveling. we have put together a volunteer database, but i will say that the request for shoveling exceeds the volunteers. so if you are able to help a neighbor, please do so. >> reporter: in addition to asking for volunteers to help shovel, the mayor pleaded with residents to stay home. she wants cars and pedestrians off the streets so plows and first responders can get through. this stuck pickup truck blocked an entire convoy of plows this evening. upper northwest got the most snow in the district. the mayor is also asking residents to dig out fire hydrants on their streets. as for when the side streets will be cleared by plows -- >> so we really have to do a
11:08 pm
hard assessment on that. we want the roads cleared as soon as possible, and we're going to be doing everything we can to get there. >> reporter: so no firm timeline on when neighborhoods will get plowed or when metro will reopen or if schools will reopen on monday. one more bit of advice from d.c. police chief cathy lanier. when you shovel your car out from on the streets, it's illegal to put your furniture out there and save your space. no saveies in d.c. back to you. >> thank you, mark. we are already starting to hear about some schools closing on monday. frederick county public schools in maryland will close. university of maryland, touson university, and anne arundel community college all closing on monday. we also have a long list of churches closing in the morning. you can find them running on the bottom of your screen and on our nbc washington app. and tomorrow's game between the capitals and the beng wins at the verizon center has been postponed because of the storm. if you had a ticket for tomorrow, it will be good for the makeup date. dangerous driving conditions
11:09 pm
in fairfax county tonight. >> news 4's darcy spencer has been monitoring this snow in tysons. you've been at a gas station. what's the fuel situation looking like? >> reporter: very much so. we've been camped out here at this gas station in tysons for the last couple of days, and you may have noticed in my live shots how packed it was with trucks. well, you can see it's pretty much empty now. that's because they are out of diesel fuel, and as people are trying to get these roads cleared, they're finding that fuel is in short supply. driving conditions treacherous here in northern virginia. cars on the dulles toll road abandoned in snow drifts. some drivers trying to get a push. even the kind of snow that the big plow trucks can't handle. many of them got stuck too. >> it's crazy. unless you have to be out here, stay home.

i wish i could stay at home right now. >> reporter: heavy snowfalling since friday afternoon, blowing and drifting. the beauty of this winter wonderland deceptively dangerous. visibility so low, cars seem to disappear. what's your advice? >> my advice? stay indoors. >> stay indoors? >> yeah, you don't got to go out, stay inside. >> reporter: that's definitely some good advice. it does seem that the snow is beginning to taper off here, although we still have the wind. we're looking forward to the end of the blizzard of 2016. back to you. >> as we all are, darcy. thanks. new video of crews working to remove all the snow at dulles airport tonight. right now all run ways at dulles, reagan national, bwi marshall all closed. a very good chance they'll remain closed through tomorrow. >> i'm erica gone psalm easy at the live december. we are watching the damage that this storm is doing up and down the east coast. the storm responsible for at least 18 deaths. three of those in virginia and
