5:30 am
what are we going to do with all that snow? >> i don't know. there's more. 5:30 in the morning. i'm angie goff. >> hi, everyone. the question now is if we're going to be helped from the weather this week to help with
5:31 am
all the snow. tom kierein tracking your "storm team 4" weather. hey, tom. >> what a storm, incredible. everything has been transformed by that blustery strong wind and the heavy snow we had yesterday. here is the scene now at union station. it is all snow covered there, and many of the side streets have not been touched. many of the main arteries have been plowed. our tower camera looking down at the entrance of nbc 4. you can see it has been plowed, but all the side streets for the most part have not been touched yet. here's the last of the storm. it has exited new england. cape cod here. new york city got hammered, about 26 inches there. our temperatures now are very cold. we're in the 20s around the bay. around the me tree area, hovering around the 20s. northern western suburbs in the
5:32 am
teens. look at luray, only 9 there. just in the teens in the shenandoah valley where they got a lot of snow. shepherdstown, over 4 inches of snow. 17.8 at reagan national. there's controversy on whether it's the storm total. 35 inches north and west of washington. southern suburbs ended up with 2 feet and down in southern maryland, a little over 2 foot. hour by hour through 10:00, we'll be below freezing. the winds are done and by 2:00 the winds will be calming. may be a little above freezing for an hour or two and will be refreezing as we get into the late hours. the low 20s. a look at the record yesterday with snowfall totals and a bit of a warming trend for the
5:33 am
weekend ahead. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so much, tom. besides the number, the impact. we knew this was going to be a possibility with all the heavy snow. it really has become such a reality. dozens of people looking for a place to stay this morning after a roof collapsed at an apartment. this is in the manassas area. >> that's right. seven people were displaced after a roof collapsed. we're joined on the phone by assistant fife chief matt smolsky. what can you tell us? >> good morning. upon arrival, we discovered the partial collapse of one roof and another apartment building whose roof started to sag. we evacuated both apartment
5:34 am
buildings. no injuries were reported. as you previously state, we have 67 people who we're sheltering at this time, and along with that we have four pets who were also subject to shelter. >> chief, i want to ask you for your advice. more often than not, attempting to remove snow from a roof can be more hazardous. what can you tell people whose roofs may be at risk? >> removing snow from a roof is highly hazardous. i'd recommend you call a company. it's especially for people who have flat roof. it's more of a hazard because of the concentration for that kind of structure. again, if you have to do it on your own townhouse or residence,
5:35 am
i would suggest you get help. don't do it by yourself. never attempt to do it by yourself. always have a partner or let the professionals do it. >> it depends what kind of snow you have. is there any way to kind of discern whether or not one is more at risk than another? >> oh, absolutely. the way it's exerted in a cubic foot, i think it's 7 psi versus 12 to 18 per cubic foot. what happens as the snow comes down wet and tends to melt, the moisture will concentrate and be much heavier. a wet snow is much more heavier than a dry snow. i'll leave that to the weather guys, but i think that's kind of the weather we received. i would consider it very dangerous right now. >> all right. prince williams county fire
5:36 am
chief matt smolsky. thank you for giving us some insight. also we have derrick ward on the scene and he'll tell us more. we want to begin our team coverage of blizzard 2016 this morning with major road closures. >> this is amazing. right now all 34 miles of 270 shut down from the beltway to i-81. mayor governor larry hogan ordered the highway shut down after several accidents. "news4's" david culver live along river road at the potomac with a little more insight. what have you got, david? >> reporter: hey, there, angie and adam. you're not going to see me but i'll tell you. we see it continues to be piled up in some place. where we are on river road, i've got to say it's cleared as good as you're going to see in most parts of our area. as you mentioned, that nearly 35 miles of 270 from i-81 to the
5:37 am
baltimore beltway shut down. that's supposed to be until 7:00 this morning. that's because of all the issues they've been having, especially with tractor trailers on the road and the rough conditions. we're going to continue to make this drive here. t.j. is behind the wheel. how is it? pretty smooth? >> it's okay. >> we're coming up on one right now. they're plowing in the other direction. that's always a struggle as you're making the drive here between dodging pedestrians who decided to not walk in the three-plus feet of snow on the sidewalk and are choosing to make the commute along the streets which especially in the darker hours is never a good idea. it's tough to see them. you're driving and all of a sudden you're coming upon them. as we continue to make our commute now, we'll send it to you guys.
5:38 am
>> david culver and the storm team 4 x 4. you're starting to see the pavement. that's something you didn't see at all yesterday. the crews are making a little more progress with all of that. >> deaf nutley don definitely don't get a false sense of security. >> ancient history, angie. we're moving onto sunday morning now. >> yes, we are. we're going to move on to what's going on with the skies. taking a look at what's closed. reagan national airport this morning. they continue to clean the runways. we know they're closed at reagan, b.w./marshall. as far as last night 36 inches
5:39 am
have fallen at dulles. >> yeah. that's a lot. >> some evening flights are still listed but you may want to check your airlines. >> all parents are going to be happy to hear this one. looks like a lot of students and staff will have another snow day. they have planned to cancel. frederick public schools in maryland will be closed. maryland's housing university and anne arundel community college are also closed. we're going to have an update on the latest as soon as we get it. you can find them on the bottom of the screen and on your nbc washington app. >> now the big dig. first the big storm. now the big dig. >> you'll need your sun glasses. >> the sun glare is going to be brutal. officials are warning you need to go out and shovel sidewalks. people walking in the middle of the street because the sidewalks are filled with so much snow. officials say it's dangerous, so
5:40 am
please don't do it as you may get in the way of plows and first responders. the snow nmay have stopped, but now the real work begins. to do that, d.c.'s mayor muriel bowser has asked people to stay off the street. the mayor has also asked volunteers to help out folks who may be in need of shoveling. >> we have put together a volunteer database, but i will say that the request for shoveling exceeds the volunteers. so if you are able to help a neighbor, please do so. >> yeah, absolutely. if you can help. the mayor will give another update on the city's response to blizzard 2016 coming up this morning. now we want to check in with lynn city frayty with the maryland highway safety. >> yeah. of course, lindsey, 270 shut
5:41 am
down. >> that is correct. we had to shut it down. >> what happened during the overnight period that it got so rough? >> well, we had seen several disabled tractor trailers and other vehicles earlier in the day, so it was best for us to go ahead and close that roadway so that we could go ahead and clear it as best as possible. >> what do you feel is the biggest issue? i heard there was drifting. has that been the issue? >> yes, there was drifting. we have not had to suspend any operations. we have had several disabled plow trucks even that we had to go in and assist, however, we did not have to cease any of our operations. >> at what point can you really
5:42 am
start putting down salt? i heard last night a lot of people were focused on plowing. are we now getting to the point where we can plow and then treat the roads again? >> you're absolutely correct. at this time we're in plowing and treatment mood, so we're actively clearing like you said. you're seeing some of the bare pavement, and we do want to caution that that is not a sign for everybody to hit the roads. we really do need some more time to clear the roads, especially the larger roads. >> and we're giving you a live look right now. that closure -- this is david culver's camera right there. thank you so much for joining us and giving us an update on the situation out there. we know the snow is over. the work, though, not going to be done. >> i don't want to even think about it. >> from d.c. to maryland, virginia, a lot of us, they're going to be spending the time doing the very same thing. >> and you?
5:43 am
>> a little bit. we've got snow blowers. >> let's take a live look outside at the conditions. the capital wheel, hey, certainly looks beautiful. and the skies are clear. i think a lot of people will be happy to see that. stay with us. the blizzard of 2016, it continues.
5:44 am
it's about time the taco...came out of its shell. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. that sound. like nails on a chalkboard. but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. the sound of the weekend. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop.
5:45 am
5:46 am
you survived it. >> phew. >> it was a busy weekend. now on to blizzard 2016, the big dig out. >> let's check in with molette green. she's live in germantown. how's it looking out there, molette? >> hey, girl. >> reporter: good morning. this is a cleanup that's going to be measured in days, not
5:47 am
hours, folks. a lot of the snow is off to the side. a lot of it is right behind me. but now you have another situation that's popping up out here, which is the ice. it is icy. my photographer beth shot son video. we want you to take a look of not too long ago. the plow trucks are out here doing the best job they can. we want to focus on the main arteries, the main roads. then they'll get to the secondary roads. of course, the side streets come last. that is the focus. the montgomery county police, i talked to them this morning. their word is to stay off the roads and let the workers do their jobs so businesses can get back open, people can get back to their business as soon as possible. some of the private contractors
5:48 am
are handling some of the neighborhoods, some of the business areas. they tell me they're having a tough time getting through with the piles of snow that are out here. they've made progress, but it's windy, it's icy. they're having the cllenges they're dealing with this morning and it is going to take time with so much snow that came down in this area alone. two feet of it. so that's a lot to deal with for these plow workers who are working very hard. the next time i see you, we're going to talk a little bit with one of those contractors who's talking about the challenges that they're facing out here. that is the latest live from germantown along germantown road. thank you. >> that was molette green. germantown got slammed. that was one of the worst places. >> i know. scott mcclellan did a good job out there. the cleanup continues across the region. you share your best photos with us. adam, you continue to love this one. this was sent in by a proud
5:49 am
aunt. her name is mary. this is how her niece dressed herself to go out and dig out of the snow. >> is she wearing pants? >> no. >> where is that from? >> the lego movie, come on. she went out to help. a lot of you had to dig out your cars. this is across the region. we're grateful for our colleagues who made it in. in west virginia, 2 feet of snow fell in this area. luckily these goats were unfazed. check it out. a nice caravan of goats. we want you to send us your pictures. tweet us. shoot us an old-fashioned e-mail. >> the goats were culled. sorry. thank you.
5:50 am
is that a goose? >> i don't know. >> all right. sound effects. listen, we want to get straight to "storm team 4" meteorologist tom kierein because he's the guy who can tell us about how long it's actually been. tom, the question everybody wants to know, i think, who got hit worst. >> most areas right along the potomac river from harper's ferry up into washington county and farther west, that was the bull's-eye where they had up to 40 inches of snow. metro area was nearby suburbs, most locations, 25 to 30 inches. where's the storm now? well, it's long gone. we've got a bright moonlit sky. it's cleared out. the last of the snow has existed southern england. a few snow showers around martha's vineyard and nantucket. southern new england. new york city got hammered. 26 inches in central park. we're clearing out now.
5:51 am
snowfall, reagan national, 17.8. that ties it with 2010. but that measurement is being called into question because they have recorded 14 inches at 7:00 a.m. on saturday. easily there was a lot more. maybe there was a problem because of all the wind that they had difficulty measuring that, but for now it's tying the all-time record. meanwhile, b.w./marshall, an all-time record since they've been keeping records, 22.4, dulles, second all-time, 29.3 inches. all the neighborhoods are clogged. there at shep herdstown near the potomac, they had 36. 35 around here.
5:52 am
up around poolesville, 34 inches. damascus had about 32 inches. 30 inches in silver spring. and then right around the immediate metro area, the beltway, many locations had 20 to 25 inches. fairfax county had to around 30 inches. it tapered off further south. far southern maryland had about 13 or so. main roads are getting treated. secondary roads and other streets are snow covered. we'll have melting and refreezing, melting and refreezing. we'll have patchy ice from the snow. take breaks when you're shoveling. clear snow around the hydrants so if there's a fire, the fire crews will be able to get to it. clear your entire car including the roof. a lot of people don't bother clearing the roof of the snow and then they get out and drive
5:53 am
and it goes flying into the car behind. temperatures right now are hovering into the teens. hour by hour forecast by 10:00 a.m., near 30. may get to freezing. a little breeze this morning. the winds will be calming. by late this evening, back into the low 20s. by dawn, because of the impact of this will be down into the teens. mid-30s tomorrow afternoon. near 30 tuesday morning. low 40s in the afternoon. might get a few rain showers. sun back wednesday afternoon with highs low 40s and then thursday and friday, we'll be having highs near 40, 20s in the morning and maybe upper 40s as we get into saturday. we're back with frequent updates. stay with us. >> hey, tom, i want to give you credit. you called this storm a week ago, buddy. >> thanks. this has been one of the best forecasted storms because of the sophistication of the computer models now getting much better
5:54 am
going forward in time. >> nicely done. >> you did a great job. a lot of people were saying, hey, you did this last weekend. no, it's all time. it's all tom. >> that's right. >> while we're seeing water in this reerks it's water here in new jersey. >> we're shone wait brought to cape may, new jersey. >> reporter: the ocean remained angry but the high tide stopped the record level that drove people out of their homes saturday. >> it makes me want to move away from the shore. >> reporter: this rescue by fire rescue along the coast as people found themselves stranded in houses surrounded by flooding, especially severe in parts of cape may county. >> it's a heck of a lot more serious than storm sandy. >> the water kept coming up. i knew i had to get out of there. >> reporter: water that came
5:55 am
inside antonio velasquez's house that wasn't spared by sandy either. he spent the night at a shelter. >> this is my second disaster t second time i'm a going to lose everything. >> reporter: this water went into the bakery. >> of course, water gets in everywhere. >> reporter: damage from water and wind that left people in the dark. >> there's going to be a lot of water damage from this particular storm. >> new york also digging out of the storm. the travel ban put in place by the governor will likely be lifted by 7:00 this morning, so in about an hour or so. this is forcing folks onto the roads. crews worked through the night to clear the mess of the snow. new york city found nearly 25 inches of snow. i'll tell you. i saw a report of times square. it's crazy.
5:56 am
broadway shut down. you don't see that. >> i think they took an interesting move to get the cars off the road and get it cleared. >> you have to do what you have to do. >> you've probably seen this one. cameras at the zoo caught pan pan playing in the snow. he's 18 years old. >> i love this. he's sliding, playing with his toes. he doesn't know what to do. >> the video was posted on the zoo's facebook page and twitter. more than a thousand shares on the nbc washington page. by inner loop it was trending on social media and it seems that the giant panda may have some competition. some of you at least want to share in his limelight. you shared your panda moment. this is kathy getting in the snow. perhaps suffering from a little
