clock efforts underway to get washington back to normal and your street cleared. >> it won't be a normal monday morning commute around here, if you do have to get to work. metro will be running but not at full service. now the big worry tonight and into the morning that refreeze as bitter cold temperatures turn the snow into ice. good evening, everybody. the temperatures dropping tonight and in the morning bring a new round of concern as we dig out and clean up from this blizzard. hello, i'm jim hanley. >> and i'm erika. news 4 has a team of reporters on the streets now getting updates on road conditions. we want to start with the meteorologist telling us what we can expect when we wake up torment >> we are dealing with very cold temperatures overnight tonight. temperatures dropping into the single digits in many lo cases, obvious, everything will

refreeze. this is the way the radar looks yesterday during the day. man, we saw a lot of snow coming down. the snow is coming down one, two, three inches per hour across the region. it was a monster, monster storm. one we had been predicting for upwards of a week. this was our prediction 20 to 30 inches of snow plus. some areas could get close to 40 inches. that's what we got here. snowfall totals dulles airport 28.3. the second biggest storm of all time. bwi close to 30 inches. unfortunately reagan national the measuring equipment didn't work. they came in at 17.8. that number will have to revised. right now at least the top four storm in the d.c. metro area. what are we seeing tonight? amelia seeigal was outside earlier. you said it was good at 6:00. it's colder now. >> reporter: exactly, doug. and walking out here to the weather deck noticing ice starting to develop.

here we're at a temperature of 22 degrees but temps in the suburbs already in the single digits in some spots map it means tomorrow morning not only is it a frigid start but dealing with icy conditions on area road and sidewalks. 6:00 arm a temperature around 15. 8:00 a.m. at 18 degrees. by 10:00 a.m. a cold 24. if you have to be out tomorrow morning, you want the warm coat, the boots, gloves, scarf. be aware of icy sidewalks. driving and dealing with ice and snow covered roads. shoveling tomorrow at least we won't be dealing with any wind. we're going to continue to track melting and refreezing not only tomorrow but for the remain of the week. >> amelia, thanks. a lot of you will get another morning to sleep in. all federal offices are closed tomorrow. emergency and tellwork employees are told to follow their

policies. maryland and virginia are closed tomorrow. you'll be able to move around on metro tomorrow limited though underground service on the orange, red, and green lines trains every 20 to 25 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. you can ride free. metro bus is operating free on noon to five on lifeline service only 22 routes are open. mta is offering free rides between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. tomorrow. mark and bre will not operate tomorrow. a decision about tuesday hasn't been made yet. now matter how you travel, it's going to be taking awhile. lots of streets and sidewalks all over washington under feet tonight. >> jackie is live in northwest checking the progress and talking to people trying to get out. >> reporter: there's a lot of work going on. a lot of plowing, but it's still pretty messy out here.

into the evening, plow trucks continue to clear wisconsin avenue down to the black top. two full lanes. but just around the corner on a residential street sat cars still encased in snow. the extra bulk making it tough for two vehicles to pass each other. >> the roads they're okay. the main roads are great. they're open. they're flowing. there's a lot of spots they haven't touched yet. there's a lot of mess out there. >> reporter: more people were out tonight walking the city streets after a weekend indoors. >> stuck inside for two days in a row. finally got out today. it feels good. >> been a couple of days in, so, yeah. >> drinking hot chocolate. >> reporter: there was a shovelled path around the metro station, but it will require people to walk single file. many bus stops remain snowed in along unshovelled sidewalks. when people go back to work,

whether they drive, take public transportation, or bike they should be prepared for the fact it will not be business as usual for several days. and when you go back to work, no matter how you get there, bring your patience. you will need it. live in northwest jackie benson news 4. >> thank you. all along we knew the storm could be deadly. a u.s. capitol police officer is one of more than two dozen lives lost from the storm. 44-year-old vernon alston died of a heart attack. he was shoveling in delaware. an 82-year-old man also died. five storm-related deaths happened in virginia. two people died in maryland. investigators in baltimore and carol county are trying to figure out if three deaths today are storm related. >> we want to show you this. it shows how dangerous the conditions are out there now. arlington county fire tweeted out this picture. a national guard truck had to help out an ambulance stuck in

the snow. our darcie spencer has been traveling around northern virginia. she joins us live with a closer look at conditions there. >> reporter: erika, we're live along fairfax drive. you can see the sidewalk here is not too bad. someone has come through here with a snow blower. if you're walking, it is still very icy. take a look here. a lot of folks have not even begun to dig out. tonight alonso has shovelled this entire walk away in front of his church. it has taken him hours. you have to be tired. >> the whole sidewalk was really tough. i never expected it was about to be that much. >> reporter: across the street a man shoveling the sidewalk for his neighbor a work out even for someone young and in shape. >> reporter: it's got to be pretty tiring for doing the shoveling. >> i'm a personal trainer so i

want to get extra cardio. >> reporter: the roads in fairfax county some are in good shape like west broad street. some of the side streets appear treacherous. this looks like a plow pushed partway and gave up. nothing short of a herculean effort. loaders and bobcats creating massive snow mounds in arlington. then the snow was loaded on to dump trucks and hauled away. >> reporter: thoung you think it will take? moving the snow and clearing the street so the county can begin to return to some kind of normalcy after the blizzard. people ventured out found there's not a lot of cleared sidewalks. pedestrians sharing the roads with cars, even our four-legged friend. those who decided to dig out realized it's a huge job. this group has been at it for hours. some not even trying yet.

>> reporter: this is a portion here of fairfax drive. you can see if you're driving through the area, you would be able to get through, but there is a lot of ice out here just like amelia said. there's concern this could all freeze other tomorrow morning. back to you. >> darcie, thank you so much. watch as fairfax county firefighters rush through snow-covered side streets to get to this house fire today. black smoke filled the air and flames shot into the roof as they arrived. the fire on round about way started about 8:00 in the morning. everybody managed to get out safely. here is a live look at reagan national airport. crews are working around the clock to clear all the snow. airport officials at national and dulles hope to have at least one runway open by tomorrow morning. the main runways at bwi-marshall opened this afternoon. they are trying to get back to normal over the next 24 hours. every major school system in

the area closed tomorrow. some districts even announced plans to close tuesday as well. we want to give you the school districts closed tomorrow and tuesday. monday and tuesday. virginia, fairfax county, prince william county, loudoun, arlington, falkner, ma nas sas, montgomery county. schools closed monday and tuesday. if you have any doubts or questions, you can go to the nbc washington app and check for the closures there. we've taken you live to d.c. and virginia. now we're heading to prince george's county where people are digging out from the storm. they're already getting set for another major concern that is just around the corner. blizzard 2016 put parts of the jersey shore under water. how people dealing with today's flooding compare this emergency to one that still fresh in their minds. and we'll check in with doug and amelia. the storm is over but they'll

take a look at what people in the big apple are dealing with. completely untouched streets with snow piled up more than two feet now. nearly 27 inches fell in central

park. that's the second highest recorded snowfall there. like here plows trying to clear the main arteries but it could take days for some neighborhoods to dig out. eight people died in the city during the storm. the flood waters are slowly receding along the jersey shore. an estimated 5 or 6 feet of water turned streets into rivers here in wildwood. rescuers used humvees to navigate the flood waters and get people out of their homes. people here say this is much worse than the flooding caused by hurricane sandy three years ago. in prince george's county most of the main roads are in decent shape. now the focus is on the side streets. >> here we go. tracy wilkinss in capital heights now with more on the big dig. >> reporter: the focus is preparing for the refreeze. >> we're sure it's going to be slick spots now with it melting and now freezing. >> reporter: cleaning the side

streets. these drivers fresh off the highway say the d.c. area is looking good. >> and i been in two of the big storms here. this is the best -- none were as big as this. this is the best the streets haven ever been. >> reporter: this is what many of the main roads in prince george's county are looking like. plowed but just passable. >> what we try to do is create a lane for drivers to get through and allow them in and out or travel that road. >> reporter: with about 70 to 75% of the main roads plowed the attention is expected to turn to residential streets. tonight and tomorrow. >> there will be a couple of more days before the entire roadways are cleared. >> reporter: meanwhile, the great dig out is underway in the neighborhood. how long did it take? >> pretty much all day. yes. maybe about four hours on saturday. about six hours today. >> reporter: county officials

have plenty of work to do on the roads. the less traffic the better. >> the highways were absolutely great. >> reporter: prince george's county remains under a state of emergency and it may be that way for the next day or two. schools and the government are closed tomorrow. in capital heights tracy wilkins news four. tonight and tomorrow the big concern is ice. as the snow melts and rain rolls in, first responders are worried that water may end up inside your home. when you get a chance over the next day and a half, work on your down spouts. when the water come office the roof as the snow melts, make sure it gets back away from the house. >> firefighters remining you to take it easy as you shovel and the snow becomes wetter and heavier. you'll have to wait another day to see the cars a the washington auto show. the auto show will open tuesday at the convention center. it was supposed to open friday. then the opening was pushed back to tomorrow due to the weather and now pushed back again.

>> i thought i missed it. take a look at this, folks. a view you don't see too often. chopper 4 gave us the aerial view of snow-covered washington. you can see the white house, jefferson memorial, the washington monument, even a frosty reagan national airport there. and now to our meteorologists. a big round of applause. they had their work cut out for them. we know you are exhausted. >> still got a lot of work, my friends. >> one thing interesting to note. obviously, a monster storm. yeah, we've been working hard here in the winter center. over the past nine months to the last year we have not had much in the way of significant weather. this is something that, you know, you don't get very often. we got record-breaking snow. we're not done with the effects yet. >> we are going to continue to see melting and refreezing throughout the week and maybe the chance for a applicabililite

snow. we don't know. >> that's what we're looking at now. what to expect. most of the roads are looking like. we have a lot of slush on the roads across the area. waking up tomorrow morning. everything refreezing. very slick conditions. some melti ining during the day tomorrow early and refreezing again. that's going to be a big concern for the next few days. here snow we saw yesterday. the radar lit up all day long. we saw a little bit of a lull in d.c. and big time snow come through 3 to 5 inches in a couple of hours before it finally was all said and done by the midnight hour last night. final snow totals, once again, we said anywhere between 20 and 30 inches of snow. some areas may see 40 inches back to the north and west. that's what we saw. 40.5 around martins burg. 36 in washington county. at the airport 29.3. number two all time at dulles. 23.5 in charles county. fredericksburg at 14.3.

some of you tell me you got close to 20 inches as well. a big time snow event across our region. something we don't see all that often but last time was six years ago. 22 the current temperature. winds out of the southwest at 3 miles per hour. not much going on out there tonight. but we've got clear skies. at least for the moment. take a look at what we saw earlier here. beautiful conditions. almost a full moon tonight. last night was the full moon. a nice night to get out and walk just a little bit. a lot of people out there walking inside the roadways. watch out for that as you make your way out across the area. take a look at the current temperatures. 12 in gaithersburg, 7 in manass manassas, and 8 in martins berg. down to 5 in gaithersburg, 6 in winchester. this is going to cause major issues tomorrow morning. amelia, this freeze thing that

we're talking about here with the melting and freezing. it's going to last all week. >> exactly. we're talking about high temperatures just above the freezing mark, at least, and dipping well below 32 during the overnight hours. so blackize a major concern tomorrow morning. it will be dangerous out there tomorrow morning on-airial roads and sidewalks as we work our way toward the midday and afternoon hours. still dealing with some spots of ice. that will be the case during the evening hours as well and refreezing occurs at night. here is the temperatures throughout your day tomorrow. 15 at 7:00 a.m. in the district. single digits in the suburbs. a high tomorrow of 35. we'll hit that about 3:00 p.m. some melting tomorrow but not a lot. and we'll also have a mix of clouds and sunshine tomorrow. not the beautiful sunshine like we saw today. school outlook this week. no chance of school -- every school closed tomorrow and tuesday. i think that will be the similar case. on wednesday some schools may try to open up. doug, we talked about more chances for rain and snow in the forecast. >> yeah. kind of a busy week. we don't see any big storms but

a chance of rain on temperature and a temperature of 45. 38 on wednesday. depending on how cold we are. we could see a mix of rain and changing over to snow on wednesday and then another chance of maybe snow late thursday night into early friday morning. in is a system that we're going to be watching here. a little bit of a potential to bring in accumulating snowfalls. behind temperatures above average. close to 50 degrees as we end the seven-day forecast next sunday. we need so to scato see warmer temperatures. it would be nice to drive around a little bit. >> wait a minute, did he say more snow? >> i said maybe a little. >> maybe. all right. thank you so much. d.c. public schools are closed tomorrow. they will serve breakfast and lunch to students and families tomorrow. for the list of schools open our nbc washington app. this is a live look at pearl

championship game cam newton and the panthers hosting the arizona cardinals. cam newton had himself a game. throws a dart to cory brown here. shakes off a tackler. he's running 86 yards for the score. carolina up 17-0. but cam he wasn't finished. third quarter call his own number here. bigger, stronger, faster than everybody else on the field. a 12 yard touchdown run. the panthers run away with the game. on the other side it was a miserable day for carson palmer. luke picks up the pass. fourth interception of the game for palmer. panthers beat the cardinals 49-15. they are heading to their second super bowl in franchise history. >> a blow out. you have more coming up in sports -- >> yep. virginia played tonight. we'll have them on "sports final."
