coming up on 5:01 in the morning thousan now. freezing rain advisories to the mountains of west virginia. be careful out there this morning. a lot of ice and slushiness around the metro area. but again, a little glazing of freezing rain possible here northernmost maryland. first little wave should dry up, but there is another chance coming here late this afternoon into this evening. current temperatures really a big range. 41 in winchester, but 26 this martinsburg. so a 15 degree difference. most of the metro is at or just above the freezing mark. here is the way the next 24 hours are shaping up depending where you live. upper 20s and low to mid-30s slushy and slippery this morning, light rain this evening, temperatures in the upper 30s and we're watching out for a chance anyway that shall of that could glaze over early again tomorrow morning. bon pers one person out dealing with the elements is tom kierein on the weather deck.

two lanes not happening on all roads. you can see that -- 295 north bound being diverted at benning road because of snow removal. inbound suitland parkway after suitland road, also snow removal blocking the right side. 5:03. and the blizzard of to 20 16 means another day at home if you're a federal employee. lawmakers are not due back until tomorrow. we've told you all federal offices are closed today and like yesterday, emergency and telework employees who are required to work should check with your agency's policies. >> yeah, it's pretty bad, like you don't want to be driving out in this. just not something you want to be out in. i don't know how other people feel, but to me it's pretty dangerous. >> so even though many side streets aren't plowed and main streets are plowed, it's probably not a great idea to be driving if you can don't have

to. a lot of roads are still covered in snow and many of us are telling us -- many of you are telling us that your neighborhood has yet to even see a plow so far. molette green is live in will derwood where people are still trying to dig out. >> reporter: absolutely. it's been three days since the snow stopped and you can't even get down many of the streets in this community. we've been riding around this morning seeing evidence of what is going on. take a look behind me, there is a gas truck that we've been watching for the last 10, 15 minutes. this guy has been stuck in the snow because this is the entrance to the mill creek town community here just off of r redland road. all of this is blocked by this wall of snow. and this guy has had to get in and out of tf of the car shovel do whatever he can to try to clear a path. he tried to get in, there was a report of possible gas issues in

this community. and the worker tried to make his way to address the issue, but thousand he's stuck back will. and this is just one little example. there were worse off communities that we saw where the mountain of snow piles was so bad, not a plow in sight. and we wanted to show you that, but it was too dangerous for to us park our truck and to be able to safely get that video to you because of the conditions in some of these areas out here. so we'll have much more coming up throughout the morning as we stay on top of this snow removal. and also the county executive will be out later today and update us on the effort to get this county back moving again. that's the latest live from derwood. back to you. neighbors in montgomery county are getting frustrated that many roads are still snowed in. emergency officials say the cleanup process will take days. the highway services special operations center working around the clock to clear roads.

d.c. is bringing in trucks to haul snow off the streets. they have made enough progress to send d.c.'s local government back to work today. d.c. public schools are planning to open back up tomorrow. mayor muriel bowser is urging everyone in the strict to use metro if possible. we're expecting another update from her at noon take. . metro started running either first trains of it ter the massive cleanup effort. crews are still working to get the silver line cleared. the orange line is not running between vienna and boston. regular fares back in effect this morning. metrobus is on a severe snow plan. metroaccess starts at noon, but some locations may be inaccessible. if you've been parked in a metro garage through the storm, you have until 9:30 this morning to get out without having to pay. you won't be able to take vre trains today. crews are still work to go restore service. marc trains, the penn line, that

is running on a reduced s schedule. there is no service on the brunswick line to frederick or west virginia. amtrak running on a modified schedule today. but 80% of its normal trips are running today between d.c. and new york. and happening today, the washington auto show opens today. the blizzard canceled the show's opening last week. car lovers now can head down to the washington convention center beginning at noon. the show will run through sunday. so a shortened time period, but enjoy that show and take metz t metro, of course. days after the blizzard, we're still feeling the impact. take a look at canal road at chain bridge. a lot of roads are icy. chuck bell is commuter forecast. and we're working to learn

developing right now, police are working to track down this man. they're concerned that he is in our area to carry out some kind of threat. they say if you do see adrian daigle, do not roaapproach him call 911 instead. he may be driving a town car with the license plate yxx 278. the death toll from the blizzard continues to rise. 42 people have died. the deaths have happened from car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks. at least five of those deaths are in our area. a dozen people died shoveling snow. several others died from carbon monoxide poisoning after being trapped inside snow covered cars. >> just a dangerous blizzard that we have been dealing with.

let's check in with chuck bell to find out more about our forecast. quick heads up for you this morning if you live or traveling towards hagerstown or martinsburg. we do have a freezing rain advisory in those areas, that goes until 11:00 this morning. temperatures are in the mid-20s, throw hid 20s from frederick, maryland out towards martinsburg whereas mostly in the mid-30s in and around town. so if you're traveling out i 68, you may run into iciness. weather impacts today, walking still tough. don't walk in the middle of the road. just stay on the sidewalks. i can't even believe how many people were still walking in the road yesterday afternoon. driving still a lot of snow and ice covered roads. airline travel is getting back to normal, but it's not 100% just yet. so your commuter forecast then for today, some icy and slippery roads around early this morning. light rain showers possible coming our way later today. temperatures today in the 40s. that will help the meltdown for sure. in a few minutes we'll take a

look at when the cold air returns. a couple of problems in alexandria. king street at quaker lane, we have the water main break still leftover from yesterday. westbound king being diverted on to north quaker there. and then route 1 northbound heading into laegs at queen street, all lanes blocked right now temporarily for snow removal. beltway at st. barnabas road, big look at the beltway, you can take a look for a second, look at your route into work. pretty green overall. no major issues right now. if you can stay off the roads probably still a good idea. we'll take a look at metro, hmac vre coming up. it may be something you've never seen before, but and you are about to love this. how it could make all the snow piled up in d.c. vanish.

today in leesburg, vdot will update residents on the snowfall removal operation at 11:00. the vice mayor and chair of the board of supervisors will also be at that news conference. it is 5:17. it's been a couple of days now since the snow stopped falling. and now anger is rising in one fairfax county community. residents are feeling forgotten by the transportation department. you can see there it is just tough to dig out. residents tell us some of the streets are only half plowed, others barely touched. one man we spoke to said he has to get out, but he doesn't have a choice. >> it was a pretty big storm, so i understand if they haven't gotten to the whole street. i'm just out here digging out trying to get to work tomorrow. >> we do have an update from vdot. the agency says its statewide call center number was down

yesterday. v to the says dot says they havf the area cleared. a lot of you having a tough time on neighborhood roads in prince george's county. we asked the county executive and he says it's a big storm and the clearing will take time. and people in new york city's biggest borough are clearing some of their own streets and they aren't happy about it. residents in queens are digging out because they say the plows haven't been in their neighborhoods. close to 30 inches of snow fell in the state last weekend. reads claim mayor de blasio says streets should have been cleared in time for monday's commute, but that didn't happen. de blasio says queens faces challenges because of the small streets. another area slammed by the weekend snow storm, norristown, pennsylvania. a lot of folks had to dig their cars out of mounds of snow. borough leaders have come under

fire for what some say was a snow response failure. more relief on the way to d.c. this morning from central indiana. take a look at this machine. it is a mega snow melter and it's on its way by the special request of d.c. department of homeland security. this thing can melt 60 tons of snow per hour. welcome. >> pretty impressive. >> my thing is where does all the liquid go. >> reagan national just bought a similar thing. coming up on 20 after the hour right now. want to get you caught up on our forecast for the days ahead. >> chuck bell giving us the forecast. shy be worried about this rain/snow thing you're talking about? >> we're keeping a close eye on that for sure because there is a little freezing rain advisory this morning. we could have another little threat for freezing rain coming up late tonight into the pre-dawn hours tomorrow morning.

not a big threat, but any tishl problems on top of all the mess that we already have immediate to keep you ahead of. the snow melt per day, most people still have between 15 and 30 inches of snow on the ground. with temperatures will in the 40s yesterday, today and tomorrow, so with temps near 40, you can expect to lose about 2 to 3 inches of snow per day. and if you have more sunshine or more wind, that actually helps melt the snow all the faster. so it will be a long time before you see green grass in most neighborhoods. here is the freezing rain advisory this morning. washington county, maryland, berkeley county and morgan county in the panhandle of west virginia here this morning, no advisories in and around the metro area. we do have a chance for light rain coming our way later on today. temperatures right now are above freezing in the metro, but the reason the advisory is up here, frederick, hagerstown and martinsburg only in the mid 20s this morning at that little ripple of moisture coming in. any freezing rain at all needs

to be monitored carefully. so today a whole lot of slipperiness this morning. temperatures upper 20s to 30s. lots of melting in by noontime. 44 this afternoon with light rain showers coming in this afternoon and into this evening. here is future weather. 4:00, just hit and miss chance of light rain or drizzle. by 7:00, that will be our best chance for rain. between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. in the metro. and then the rain chance after 10:00 moves down into parts of southern maryland before clearing out. and then tomorrow, by 9:00, all the rain is over, it will be a little breezier tomorrow as colder drier air settled on in. so planning your day out tomorrow, chance of slipperiness in the rural areas, but then clearing skies. temperatures depend near 40 tomorrow, but tomorrow night into friday, another shot of colder air coming. try, but cold, that little snow chance we were watching for thursday, that storm is now going to be staying out to sea. but thursday, friday, saturday mornings, everything will be ice right back up again.

now with a look at some ice-covered streets. first the snow and now the ice overnight. >> reporter: you know people don't care about that map if that map does not show that they have plowed their street. and i'm going to show you, readlaread redland road is the main artery and a salt truck just came by here a couple minutes ago. it eventually turns in to municipal caster. but mill creek town community is right behind us there on roslyn avenue and those folks are stuck in a wall of snow, blocking the entire entrance. we've been watching this gas co-worker for at least, what, 30 minutes now trying to dig out. what was he thinking trying to go town into that community to service the area with all of that snow. i asked him that question and you'll hear his sweet answer coming up. but behind that wall of snow, that is a road, folks, that leads to so many houses. and those people can't get out. they cannot get out. if they get out, they can't get back in as the gas company guy

is finds out. because he is still struggling to make his way out and get on with his day's work. and we want to tell you that the montgomery county executive ike leggett will talk about the success and what is still to come as they try to dig this county out. he's even going to ride along with a plow truck. that will be later on in the day. but in the meantime, many people in this community, in this county stuck in snow. back to you. well, the big digout of course continues in our area and all over the northeast and travel is still a nightmare for so many people. 13,000 flights have been canceled since the blizzard started on friday from laguardia to reagan national, runways are slowly being cleared of snow. parking lots, though, taking a little longer to clear and that means airport employees and passengers are having a hard time actually getting to the terminals. jfk says it is up and running today, the airlines themselves may take a few days to get back

on track. >> for the airline on a whole, it will take a couple days to recover. >> we're still seeing delays and cancellations at our area airports. so again, you know the rule, check with your airline before you head out this morning. digging out from the blizzard of 2016 will take some time. maybe a lot of time. vdot says they just don't have the equipment to deal with this much snow. many of the neighborhood streets in in fairfax county are still buried and we have some residents saying they had to dig out on their own. most neighbors band together and began digs out their streets days before the plows even get there. d.c. remains under a snow emergency this morning, that means no parking on snow emergency routes or you will get a $250 fine and towing fee. the district has already issued nearly 3,000 tickets and towed more than 500 cars. many of those cars can be seen here at the blue plane impound

a school employee in iowa has been fired after restraining a special needs student. school officials just released this video of the 20 year veteran using her upper body to press the child against the window of a bus last november. the bus driver was also fired for not stepping in. new information in the search for will ma malaysia air flight 370. they say this sheet of metal is not from the missing plane. the blueprints don't include a piece that look like that. japanese scientists say it came from a rocket instead.

flights are finally taking off after this big blizzard. check out the photo of the national mall. it is a viewer who caught one of the first flights once they started running plenty of plane not taking off today and derrick ward is at the airport where people have been waiting a long time to leave. >> reporter: folks are starting to trickle in here after finding our region to be an unexpected and long layover on their trips elsewhere. dulles is one of the hardest hit, so this is happening all across the region. here at dulles, 132 flights were affected. that's 73 outbound and 59 incoming flights. p but reagan national, they had their problems, too. 17 outbound flights and 10 inbound flights were affected. that's 27 in all. and even bwi make yorshall was affected. behind all of the numbers are of
