"news4" midday starts right now. frustration is continuing across the area. in the next few hours we could have a better idea of when those neighborhoods will get some attention. right now in leesburg, leaders

from loudoun county and vdot are giving updates on snow removal efforts there. in an hour d.c. mayor muriel bowser is giving an update on the district's response and then there will be an update in bethesda. we'll have continuing updates through this broadcast and on the nbc washington app. for people who were able to get out this morning, many ran into cruise still working to clear the roads out there. this is i-270 southbound after 6:30 this morning. heavy equipment was brought in to move the snow off the exit ramp. you can see drivers taking it much slower. "storm team 4" meteorologist tom kear ra kierein is working for many of us. >> we've got melting under way. reagan national is now at 41. clinton, 45. much of montgomery and fairfax, low 40s. upper 40s around the bay.

annapolis, 40 degrees. look at front royal, 50 degrees. luray at 48. winchester at 45. really helping with the melting of snow. stanton as well, 50. even in the 40s out in the mountains as well with this milder southwesterly flow around. we'll have the melting continuing. raindrops later on tonight. a few snowdrops a little around tomorrow morning and otherwise a few. then some freezing nights coming up in the next few nights as we get toward the end of the week. i'm pat lawson muse at the live desk. we're following a fire in montgomery county right now. it happened at the fourth presbyterian school in potomac. that's near the intersection of soekt glen road and norton road.

county firefighters say the snow slowed them down this morning. they say the fire hydrant was buried and the driveway unplowed and then they had to dig the fire truck out. luckily no one was injured. eun, back to you. >> thank you. looking live at capitol hill, all federal offices in the area are closed today. federal lawmakers are expected back to the hill for a vote wednesday evening. the house canceled its votes for the rest of the week. all major schools closed today. arlington, prince william, loudoun, and paige say they will be closed tomorrow. manassas will be closed as well. d.c. public schools say they will be open. >> crews are working to restore service on the original line between vienna and boston. they say it's down because of damage on the third rail. they're also working to get the silver line cleared. regular fares are back in

"news4's" derrick ward is live in boston checking out what you'll see if you head out today. >> reporter: it's always busy at this station even if a lot of things are closed. that's because they're experiencing problems as you said. today, effectively, this is the end of the orange line in virginia here in boston. the problems are loring, and others. they've been running stations through there. so instead of getting those trains stuck on that line, they've decided to close it. they're running a bus bridge among those stations from here at boston. so folks are loading on the shuttle buses. there are metro personnel making announcements to make sure people know where they're going. people we talked to today, most of them who had to take care of this or deal with this are indeed dealing with this. >> i'm waiting on my bus.

it's usually late anyway, no matter the weather. >> i flew in from florida to come to a meeting today and i'm not quite sheer whether or not it's even still happening. >> reporter: now, they're continually testing those rails and doing repairs on other things that were damaged because of the blizzard, and they hope by later today to know whether or not they'll be able to open those stations as usual for tomorrow. now, again, unfortunatefortunat things being closed it gives them more room to deal with it. more adversity for metro and the fallout of the snowfall we've had over the past few days. we're live at boston. i'm aaron gilchrist. here are some of the stories. parts of west virginia, maryland saw up to 3.5 feet of snow. this photo was taken on sunday at 2:00 in the morning. by that time pretty much the entire new york to d.c. corridor was covered in this thick blanket of snow. take a look at this o'photo from nasa. this is the d.c. area covered in snow. pretty cool there. you might be asking yourself, how much snow did we get? according to "usa today," 2016 blizzard laid enough snow to fill metlife stadium about 98,000 times. that's impressive. that's about 22 billion dump

right now they're dealing with a water main break. take a look. you can see the water is just everywhere out there. wwsc says they're sending a crew to this scene to deal with this break. wwsc is closed today. tom, tell us when we're going to get a warmup? >> we're getting this freeze and thaw causing the water main breaks. every picture tells a story. this one looking over the harbor. the harbor is still frozen over despite temperatures well into the 40s.

the american university park showing still some streets are snow clogged but many of them have been clogged. there's nebraska avenue all nice and cleared now. here's the capital. melting continues. we'll stay in the 40s. by 6:00 p.m., low 40s, a chance of a few sprinkles. might change over to a few snow flurries and maybe sprinkles of rain. may not be causing any problems. >> thanks, tom. new today, ford is recalling over 300,000 pickup trucks. there's a problem with the airbags made by takata corporation. it can explode and cause shrapnel flying. this involved trucks made between 204 and 2006. the washington auto show will open. you can head down to the wall street convention center

that major highway. there's also a plow there on the scene right now. you can see traffic moving pretty well. we've heard some stories from people who have been trying to drive, that even though the roads are clear, they're still running into problems at the overpasses and the ramps. a big, big job. the crews have been working since friday to get them up and moving. traffic backed up. again, 270, snow removal continuing there after this blizzard. and we've been telling you it continues to be dangerous to drive out there in many areas. even plows are getting damaged dealing with the massive amount of snow that they have to deal with. look at the flames that tore through a plow in stafford county. firefighters say at least three plows caught fire over the weekend. at least one person was hurt, but not badly, thank goodness. firefighters don't know the exact cause for the fires but they say the plows are not used that often, and they were really put to the test out there this

weekend. and we are going to talk to tom right now. tom, are you there? >> right now, we've got temperatures above freezing. that is a great news throughout much of the region. we're into the 40s. look at the temperatures around the metro area. we're in the mid-40s. much of fairfax, montgomery county, and prince george's county. look at annapolis. already up to 49 degrees. we're going to get some good melting of that snow throughout the rest of the day. we'll likely stay above freezing for most of the area. right now getting a few scattered sprinkles way out here in west virginia. the general trend is for them to move in. this is as of 4:00 p.m. a few sprinkles north and west of the area. but throughout the afternoon hours we should stay dry. a little bit of light rain coming through this area, green, continues after midnight. tracking off south and east it might end with a few scattered flurries. >> thank you, tom. more now on the big digout.

bients three days since the snow stopped but plows have yet to reach many presidential areas. take a look at this one. in prince george's county we talked with a lot of people who are angry and frustrated. "news4's" molette green joins us live from ft. washington. how does it look there? >> reporter: we're off brinkley road. people have abandoned their cars because of snow and ice. those who have got p up the hill are the lucky ones. they say it's impossible to maneuver for the most part because there's too much snow and ice on this hilly street. wheels spinning, temperatures boiling other in snow, slush, and ice. >> they won't move. >> they're not compromising, they're not courteous. everybody's frustration is running hard. they haven't done anything to this property since the snow's come. >> reporter: at this intersection -- >> yeah.

in snowy oakmont, p.a. crews destroyed a bridge. it's being replaced with a new $66 million bridge that connects the pittsburgh suburbs. you may recognize one of the actors in an upcoming tv series. check out this tweet from virginia governor terry mcauliffe. he was filming in richmond yesterday for the amc philadelphia series "turn." he joked and said he should be called "one take terry" after he got through after one airing with his lines. it's scheduled to air on june 6th. he's not giving up his governorship but i'm sure it was a real treat, real fun. after the break, a stop that went terribly long for one police officer. and

look at this. this huge machine is going to be rolling into d.c. soon all the way from central indiana. the snow monster can melt 60 tons of snow per hour. what do you think, tom? >> at that rate, maybe by may it will all be gone -- of this year. yeah, we have a herculean task to perform to get rid of all this snow. right now around the region the atmosphere is helping to melt the snow. we're well into the 40s. peeking into the upper 40s for later this afternoon. tonight, maybe a light rain, a rain shower after midnight. maybe a few snowflakes or flurries predawn. but then it's gone. a bit chillier tomorrow. back up to 40. sub freezing mornings on thursday and friday and maybe again on saturday. but then we'll get more melting.

right now many areas remain impassable and unplowed. we're told crews will need at least a day to get roads plowed. we hope it will only take a day. in montgomery county we expect an update today at 1:00. well, the snow is having an effect on metro too. the transit authority is moving to move snow from the silver line. all major stations are closed

right now. you have to take a bus to four stations on the orange line because of the damaged third rail. "news4's" derrick ward is live in boston where those changes are impacting some travelers out there. >> reporter: yeah, indeed they are, but the impact doesn't seem to be as adverse as the people dealing with the problems. now, the four stations that are closed are vienna, dunning, loring, east falls church and westphals church. they found ice on the rails and without having contact with the third rail, the trains just won't move. they closed those stations down and are running shuttle buses at boston for each of those four stations. people are dealing with it and they say they're making best of it. >> it's actually not bad for me. i'm used to this. i go do this every day. it's not bad.

>> well, i flew in from florida, but i get to see snow. i haven't seen snow in about 13 years. >> reporter: now, they're doing a gargantuan job, a herculean effort. they're making sure the people can get to and from the shusle buses. they're moving the trains up and down the track to see if they can restore service to those stations within the next 24 to 48 hours or so. they expect to make an announcement and decision later today. the shuttles are running in both directions. for today boston is effectively the end of the orange line in virginia. that is until further notice. we're live in boston. derrick ward, "news4." back to you. i'm pat lawson muse with this just in to the "news4" live devg. a new promise to help clear the roads for one of the hardest hit

areas after the blizzard. officials say ddot will make at least one pass through every neighborhood road by tomorrow morning. however, a bit of caution comes with this promise. here's what we heard a few moments ago. >> one pass means just that. one pass is one pass. it doesn't mean the streets will be clear or two cars can pass but one pass. they would do that by taking some of the heavier equipment off of the primary roads and putting them into your neighborhood. >> the loudoun county sheriff is asking everyone to stay off the roads to let vdot plows get through safely. parts of loudoun got 36 inches of snow. eun? >> thank you, pat. new school closings into our news room in the past hour. check this out. schools in fauquier county say they will be closed tomorrow and thursday. tomorrow washington counties, maryland schools and morgan

county will be closed as will schools from arlington. we also heard from william, loudoun, paige, and manassas. schools there will be closed as well. temperatures are in the 40s right now. >> we could get some melting today. how much melting, tom will tell us. are we expecting a warmup enough? >> probably not tomorrow morning but a couple of mornings after that. so the next several hours and all the way into tomorrow and the evening, we'll stay above freezing for most of the area. four things to do, make sure you clean your entire car before you start driving it. get the snow off the roof. take frequent breaks when you're shoveling. cleary ÷ snow arou wear sunglasses. you can have a problem with snow with the light bouncing off the snow. 45 in the afternoon with dry roads. there maybe a few wet roadways

as we all dig out, we're seeing wonderful stories of neighbored helping each other dig out. they dug for other four hours yesterday. they went to work after finding out two women are due to give birth this week. >> we all came out doing our little thing, you know, to the driveways. then we said, let's get them out. >> i felt so -- like i said so honored that they would do that for me and other people to help out. people are good. >> they really are, especially in tough times. this is a picture in loudoun

county. neighbors all came together. if you see something, besure to send a hash tag #help4neighbors. there's a new warning for women. they say heart disease remains undertreated and under dying nieced in women compared to men. nbc's anne thompson has more on what's behind this gender gap. >> reporter: when it comes to treatment for heart disease, it is still a man's world. in a first of its kind report on heart attacks in women, today the american heart association says heart disease remains undertreated and underdiagnosed in women. it starts with a difference in symptoms. men tend to have severe chest pain before a heart attack. women's signs can be more subtle including shortness of breath, nausea, and jaw pain.

katherine an active mother of two was just 39 when a heart attack sent her to the hospital. >> i had a challenging time getting even the hospital at the time to accept me because i didn't look like someone who should be suffering from an event. >> reporter: with this new information, cardiologist dr. jennifer morez hopes treatment of women will improve. >> the statement gives us a roadmap of some of the gender differences with heart disease. >> reporter: take risk factors. women with high blood pressure have a stronger one than men and a woman with diabetes, her risk is four to five times higher than in men. the risks are even greater for minority women. >> high incidents of high per tension, diabetes, obesity, inactivity, and exposure to chronic stress. >> the good news is simple

taking a look at travel right now as many more break out of this blizzard. hov lane restrings are being lifted because of the federal government being closed, but vdot still wants you to limit your travel on all roadways as much as possible. they still still have snow crews removing the snow and the mountains of snow are limiting visibility. use extreme caution when merging and approaching intersections and ramps. it's been frustrating for travelers. still flights staying on the ground. at ragle national and bwi/marshall, another 50 were canceled. it's everywhere it fell, not just around here.

>> we trial to get that report later from miguel or the website. wheel the death toll from blizzard 2016 continues to rise, people have died from fr. car accidents, carbon monoxide, or heart attacks have been to blame. about a dozen people died while shoveling snow. several others died from carbon monoxide poisoning after being trapped inside snow covered cars. just a terrible situation. the state of maryland says it needs help from recovering from the blizzard of 2016. they have asked fema for disaster assistance. fema can help with assessing damage and costs from the storm. no word on when they will respond to the request. hey, tom. >> we've got to have at least one cute photo of this long-hairlong-hai long-haired dachshund.

he has low ground clearance and he was picking up a lot of snow. post your photo. we love seeing them. afternoon highs, upper 40s, and a pretty good chance of late evening and maybe predawn sprinkles of light rain. they may mix with a few snow sprinkles. then some back on wednesday after a few sprinkles and highs near 40. and still some melting after a freezing start. sub freezing morning. again, melting friday and partly sunny in the mid-40s. 40s on saturday. may hit low 50s on sunday and monday. that will cause a lot of melting. >> thank you, tom. the d.c. department of motor vehicles is relaxing some rules because of the snow. don't panic if your car is buried right now. but it's due for inspection. the dmv will waive the inspection fee. it's extending learner permits if you weren't able to make your driving tests.

other fees will be waived. we'll put more information out. a snow emergency is still in effect in the district. that mean nos parking on snow emergency routes. if you do, you're going to get a $250 fine and a towing fee. they've toed more than 500 cars. many of those were sent to the blue plains impound lot seen here. the lot was closed yesterday, so the district is waiving the lot's storage fee. according to the public work site, the lot will open today if you have to pick up your car if it was towed. i'm pat lawson muse at the live desk. reports of a possible active shooter at a hospital in san diego, california. the naval medical center near san diego, there is a massive police presence there on base. san diego police have confirmed that shots have been fired at

mission to end the stigma of mental illness. her latest campaign called #mindfulallies will hear from people with illnesses. it's a coalition that proceeds service, treatment, support, treatment about mental illness. now, this september -- mark your calendar -- star trek marks its 50th anniversary. head to new york city. mission new york is what they're calling it. a three-day event based upon a celebration of the beloved tv show and the movie franchise.
