for damages for insurance after this weekend's blizzard. these are coming from the maryland insurance administration. pictures of video of damage as soon as possible. take the pictures or video of the problems right away. you can do it safely. you should make any repairs to keep the damage from getting any worse as well. blizzard 2016 is passed. but the cleanup is far from over, of course. the national park service says the amount of service it has to remove from the maul, the monument, walk creek parkway as i found out yesterday. all of that could fill the washington monument 18 times. that 62,000 tons of snow. the park service if you pile up that snow and wanted to measure it, you would need a pat collins snow stick that is nearly two miles high. a little perspective there. your personal yard is bad enough for you, imagine having to be the one to remove literally tons of snow.

normal. don't expect to and from work to be an easy task today. first, we want to get you up to speed on breaking news on the beltway. here's melissa mollet. >> breaking news on the beltway. outerloop and braddock. two lanes getting by there. we had amelia segal driving by there. just a mess. we do have those two right lanes getting by. amelia brought that to us. we have a fedex truck overturned. it is going to be nasty. especially as this morning commute progresses here this morning. very bad as far as cleanup goes. 270 southbound, hearing about a brand-new problem there, southbound through hiatt town trying to figure out what's going on there. northbound, that left lane getting by. again, they're clearing snow. 50 at 66. again the ramp from 66 to 50 blocked. amelia, thank you for that great video just a couple minutes ago.

what are you seeing now? >> reporter: well, melissa, right now, we're just south of wilson boulevard in arlington on north thaler street and we're tracking cleanup efforts. the good news, well above freezing at 40 degrees. here's say live look outside in our front camera. you can see, we have cruise here making a massive mounds of snow i would estimate to be at least 20 feet high at this point. they're removing snow from one side of the road, clearing out what looks to be some parking spaces. we've been traveling around with the 4 by 4 all morning. we're tracking also not one but two accidents on the outerloop of the beltway, that one that you were talking about by braddock road and one by cambridge road. our plan is to continue to commute around the area and bring you the latest road conditions in the storm team 4 by 4. chuck, no rain here, what's the latest. >> we are tracking a few rain

drops primarily southern maryland along i-95. we're get eating up the snow very quickly. temperatures near 40 degrees. you can go through two to three inches per day. we've put a big dent in snow totals from a couple days ago. the real issue, temperatures are above freezing but the refreeze outlook, dangerously slick by tomorrow morning and again on friday morning. it's not today that's the problem. it's the next coming of mornings. right now, temperatures above freezing right now. storm team 4 radar tracking the rest of the rain drops. tom kierein was out, he showed a little image of the moon. skies are clearing. what to watch out for tonight right after the sun goes down, temperatures will drop below freezing. from 4:00 to 8:00, we'll go from slushy to slippery. we'll let you know how long it's going to take to get out of here, i'm back to you. today, the federal

government is opening for the first time since the blizzard of 2016 began. federal employees are on a three-hour delay this morning. employees also have the option for unscheduled leave or telework. if you're going into the office, you should plan to arrive no more than three hours after your normal end time. and as we mentioned some schools are actually opening today. we're tracking all the challenges that d.c. students may face this morning as they head back to school. >> let's start things off with angie goff with that and what you need to know about other schools. >> good more than. we're going to deep it simple this morning. of all the major school districts only four will be open today. d.c. schools said that they are opening on time. three districts in maryland, charles, calvert and st. mary's county schools on a two-hour delay. if you do not hear your school here, it say good chance it is closed. don't worry, we've got the closures scrolling at the bottom of the screen. of course, check our website or

the nbc app. just one more day or until the sidewalks are clear. >> no such luck for d.c. students. you can see some of the sidewalks are far from clear but in just a few hours students will make that trip to school. this is where erika gonzalez is in northwest washington, coolidge high school with a look at how the sidewalks are faring there. erika, what are you seeing? >> reporter: yes, this is exactly what that one mom was talking about. the swabs you've got a chunk of it eaten away by snow. there's barely enough room for a couple students to come bawalki up to school. we're right outside of coolidge high school. the steps here look really good. the problem here is the blocks before you get to coolidge. it's the neighborhood. i'm really glad the camera wasn't rolling a few minutes ago when i almost fell out of the truck. there's no place to step. when you do step on the snow,

it's getting really slick. this is a problem for a lot of students while dcps is open today for students, they did go ahead and mess that parents need to use discretion, if you, like that one mom that was just mentioning, think that it's too risky for your kids, they want you to know that absences and tardies will be excused for dcps students. live in northwest, i'm erika gonzalez. >> you just heard some of that slush on the streets there. our best advice this morning. you should plan extra time if you need to get to work or wherever you're going this morning. the snow has made getting around very difficult. >> som of the lanes are closed because there's snow still on the lanes. i can't even imagine the traffic. >> yep. we've been sitting in it the last few days. make sure you have the nbc washington app for your ride-in this morning.

a few things to know if you plan to take marc or vre. vre will operate on a normal schedule. some parking may be lost because of piles of snow. marc trains running on a revised schedule. brunswick line from camden to d.c. and the penn line operating on an "s" weekday schedule. right now, we still have breaking news here. two different problems. one on 270 south there at 109. right now, we are completely shut down. we're going to have more information on that one as well. a problem in the outer loop of braddock road. if you are heading back to work today and you're walking to metro, you better grab the umbrella. take a live look outside where some light rain is coming down. hopefully melting some snow. storm team meteorologist tom kierein will let us know how hard it will be coming down before you head out. and new information coming

5:12 now, we want you to be extra careful when you're out on the roads and sidewalks today. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is on the storm team deck with the forecast. s specially if you're walking, tom, how's it looking? >> reporter: yeah, layer up. a few sprinkles have your umbrella and he. here's your walking forecast for this wednesday. you may be leaping over puddles or dodging a few sprinkles of light rain in the next hour or so. temperatures will be dropping into the upper 30s. by the afternoon, walking back, there will be a lot of puddling around, more slush and melting on the way. melissa has breaking news on the roads. >> breaking news on the beltway again. take a look at this video.

it is another weather alert day here at news4. this is partly the reason why. you take a look at storm team 4 radar this morning. that rain you see falling could make getting to work an even slushier mess today. and we are keeping an eye on the roadways as well this morning. this is the innerloop of the beltway. you can see pavement there. that's a good thing. but you can also see it might look a little shiny off to the left side of the screen, that could mean standing water or maybe even ice. you want to keep your eyes open today. metro is working around the clock to clean up efforts. and some of it paid off. an hour before opening the system, metro managed to get the silver line cleared and ready for service. let's get right to transportation reporter adam tuss now who is live at the west falls church station with more on your commute.

adam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. certainly good news that all the metro stations will be open for business again. but you mentioned the cleanup. look at falls church kiss and ride. we have front end loaders, pickup trucks all trying to push the snow out of the way. you're dealing with conditions as you try to make your way into metro station this morning. the restoration of silver line service, that comes after an extensive cleanup on that part of the metro system. systemwide on metro today, trains are expected to run about every eight minutes. bus service, that's going to be on a moderate service plans. that mean 160 bus routes will be in effect. that's an upgrade. we talked to one rider who is happy to see the system getting back on track. >> i'm very glad they got it open. if i probably missed another day of work, i'd probably lose some money. rur certainly don't want to

myself work if you don't have to. again, the silver line station is back open this morning. now, again it might be a tricky commute. ice and snow could still fall on the third rail. that's where the railcars draw their power if a connection is lost to a train, that could mean your train loses power. let's just hope everything goes smoothly this morning. >> adam tuss, thank you, adam. 5:19, right now, our area is getting big time help removing snow from our streets. these four jumbo snowblowers and 20 workers will arrive here from connecticut. the crews are available from a state-to-state agreement where the governors provide help to one another in terms of a natural disaster. >> if we want help, we would want another state to come and help us on years back when we had a big blizzard, we didn't have this equipment we have now. we got help. >> now, the drcrews are expecte to work around the clock.

if you're wondering when your road will be plowed, here's a clue that vdot will get to you. vdot says they plan to make at least one pass from fairfax, that's by 6:00 a.m. and montgomery county says it hopes to get all neighborhoods by 7:00 this morning. the goal is to make sure everyone can at least get out of their homes. you can tweet us photos of your unplowed roads using the #snowstuck. don't forget to include the address so we can figure out when the plow might get to you, right? well, let's hope that more plows hit the mark this morning because we know you've been waiting. >> angie goff has been digging through the photographs. how are things looking, angie? >> hi, still snow bound in a lot of spots as you can imagine. keep sending your photos, by the way. we want to share a few of them. this photo sent to us from capitol hill. take a look.

add old hundred. look at that. looks like we're sneaking by that jackknifed tractor trailer. a lot of tractor trailer krashgs around the area. again, we had all lanes blocked but i think i see cars moving southbound there. 270 had the left lane getting by because of clearing snow. let's take a look, 270 south take a look at the outer loop at braddock road. amelia segal shot this a few hours ago. it's very slow all over the place. be careful as you head out. chuck. >> yes, indeed, extra caution a very good idea here for the next couple of hours before we get the sun up. fortunately, temperatures have remained well above freezing overnight. the roads still covered with slush and leftover snow, they're not all that iced up. nonetheless, slow down outside this morning. you never know when you'll see a

big bank of snow right in front of you. temperatures as i said above freezing. 38 in rockville. 41 in college park. you have seen some light rain across the area overnight. most of the steadier rain showers are south of the metro area. light rain in fredericksburg and stafford. steady rain in montrose. and route 301 into calvert and st. mary's county. that's where the bulk of the rain is now. you might have a now snowflakes mixed in with that. we're all dry north of the metro. it's the improving weather picture from a rain perspective but as the drier air moves out, it's not only drier air but colder air. as a result, the next thing we need to watch out for is the refreeze coming out tonight. cloudy, temperatures near 40 this morning. by noon, clearing out. getting sunshine back. notice temperatures falling with time during the day today.

most everybody will be below freezing around 8:00 tonight. that is the time frame that i'm most concerned about. here's your hourly temperatures. by 9:15 tonight. low 20s in martinsburg. and by tomorrow morning, 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, teens and 20s. remember now, road chemicals don't work all that well below 20 degrees. tomorrow morning will be a very dangerous iced up situation on the roads. a couple more refreezing coming up saturday and sunday morning. milder weather, into the 50s we will go sunday, monday and tuesday of next week. eventually, we'll be able to get all the slush and ice off the roads. back to you, guys. coming up on 5:25. developing right now, seven people are facing charges from that anti-government protest in oregon. it ended in a shoot-out on a highway overnight. the organizers, ammon and ryan bundy were taken into custody. another man was killed. the sheriff's department is

holding a news conference this morning to go over exactly what happened when the men were arrested. seattle police are looking for men they believe began shooting at a homes camp. two people are dead. the police chief does not think this was random. >> we don't think there will be charged because they were homes, was specifically because who they were. >> seattle's mayor is dealing with a major homeless problem but he says now is not the time to point fingers during a tragedy. a virginia resident has tested positive for the zika virus. experts say this virus causes severe birth defects. zika is a travel-born virus affecti affecting south america and caribbean. the metro board one step closer to choosing a chairman.

breaking news on the roads, three different problems right now. take a look at this for a moment. we have awe jackknifed tractor trailer across the local lane. 270 south across from montrose road. backups starting there. main lanes, of course, you cannot get through here on the local lanes at all. north of that, 270 southbound old hundred, temporarily stopped. another jackknifed trailer. a six-mile backup heading out of frederick. allow extra time. this is going to be some time before this is cleared out of the way. again, some of those problems likely being caused by the snowbanks that exist in the north part of the highways. indian head highway, old fort

things will go from bad to worse. schools, a few back today. 50% back you're going back tomorrow. 30% chance you're going back on your friday. amelia segal is outside on storm team 4 driving around talking about road conditions. good morning, amelia. >> good morning, chuck. temperatures in storm team 4 by 4 continues to hold at 40 degrees right now. we just passed the jackknifed tractor trailer as we're heading up to the exit right now. that's blocking all local lanes. we're going to head farther north. another incident up here. i'm going to say so far this morning, we're talking about six tractor trailers that are causing issues across the region. so pretty interesting out here. but for the most part, road conditions. just wet roads, guys, no icy spots, aaron and eun. thank you.

the blizzard of we2016 leaving s mark on highways and roads. you can see this street covered in snow. this is four days since the snow stopped falling. the problem is students have to walk a couple hours to school in d.c. >> reporter: good morning, that is a problem for students. i was out walking around in this yesterday. my boots even though they are, you know, protected, i against water and stuff, i can still feel thetold. and if your boots aren't that great, some of this water is going to be seeping into it. this is what students have to deal with this morning. there's barely enough room on the sidewalks for a single file line of students to be able to come through here as my photographer beth is showing you. you know, because a lot of students are probably going to want to take to the streets and that's not a safe idea.

can see the steps. hi, doggy. good morning. the steps looking okay. but it's the neighborhood streets that are the problem. it's the cars that are still piled with snow. although dcpc is starting back up. dcps has said that they will excuse absences and tard distoday. live in northwest, i'm erica gonzalez, back to you. fairfax county schools are closed today. one man tells us he's frustrated with the snowplows on the road here. he said drivers are dumping snow on the sidewalks that he and his neighbors just cleared. >> obviously, we cleared it off for people to use it. it's much safer for the kids, et cetera, people who walk here to stay on the sidewalks rather than the street. >> the heavy snow is causing big

problems for the school in chantilly. the roof collapsed there. no school for students in prince george's county but there will be lunch. from 11:00 to 1:00 is, free meals for students. northwest high cool. suitland, william paca and langley. a mig prince george's county woman has been found dead. the 84-year-old went missing yesterday. county officials confirmed to the prince george's's county chief that nelson was found dead near her home. no word on the caution of her death. in virginia, three people have died the deaths are attributed to car accidents and shoveling. 48 people in all have died from the storm. you don't have to worry if you have a flight scheduled for today. the cancellations are mostly

gone. dulles, eight flights cancelled, compare that to almost 100 yesterday. reagan three flights cancelled. and bwi marshall this morning said it's operating full strength. amtrak says it's proud to be one of the only transportation operators that offered services through the storm, in spite of challenges. as always, be sure to check on your specific trip if you plan on traveling on amtrak today. 5:36. the roof of a northwest washington hope collapsed seriously causing a big scare for some neighbors. >> it sounds like a truck hit something. or it sounded like a roof of snow was sliding off. >> fire crews say the roof of the home on 18th street in lanier heights came crashing down to the first floor. the hope was under construction, no one was home at the time. the homes on either side were

damaged. those homes have to be evacuated because they are not structurally sound. >> you have to be mindful of where you park. if you're in the district, the city's snow emergency ends at 6:30 tonight. until then, your car can still get a ticket or even be towed if parked on a snow emergency route. d.c. towed about 600 cars over the last few days. but that also means the district will earn about $1 million in fines. most of the cars went to private impound lot where is you may be forced to dig your car out. call 311 if your car was towed for more information. we have a great update to share about a woman ant community who gave her help some she needed the most. on monday, nearly a dozen people cleared a street over four hours they started shoveling after finding out two women on the street were due to give birth this week. yesterday, christina gave birth to a baby girl.

sheriff's deputies in orange county, california, have increased the reward for three escaped inmates now standing at $200,000. authorities didn't know the men were missing for at least 16 hours. these inmates are awaiting trial for violent crimes. it's unclear how they escaped. it's a weather alert day. >> some of you do have to go back to work and school.

storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is on the storm team weather deck with your forecast. still raining, tom? >> reporter: the rain has stopped. i have my umbrella handy. if you live south and east over the metro area, you may need it for the next hour or so. we've had a cold front sweep through the area. we've had colder air, blustery winds. and still above freezing. for the metro commute, you don't have to deal with iciness. it will be wet and slushy. temperatures in the upper 30s. lots of sun, more melting going on. maybe deep puddles. upper 30s, then a refreeze overnight. by this time tomorrow morning, we may be dealing with a lot of ice. we've got tractor trailerpalooza on the roads. what's going on? >> actually multiple tractor trailers. 270 southbound at montrose road, take a look at this, two lanes

system. the agency jumped into action and spent the last four days clearing the tracks. transportation adam tuss has been talking to commuters on the impact this has had on their week. adam. >> reporter: it hasn't been a lot of fun but the good news, the silver line station is back up and running. we heard that announcement just before 5:00 this morning. that means every retro rail is open. crews have been clearing a lot of ice and snow off the tracks but they did get the silver line back up and running. trains are going to run about every eight minutes this morning. for the buses that means you'll have about 160 bus routes in effect. that's a modified bus schedule. need tols sless to say, a lot p rely on the bus. >> the first line station was down. my only option was to drive in. driving in with emergency pieces of it downtown, no typical place

to park. basically, i had to work from home. >> reporter: right. a lot of people were questioning why this side of the metro system seemed to be the last to be up and running. frankly, it was the hardest hit by the storm but it also presents a lot of challenges because a lot of stations are aboveground. the temperatures are dropping. that is not good news because metro is trying to prevent any ice buildup on the third rail. we'll have to watch and see. again, the silver line stations are back up and running, guys. >> your time is 5:49, after rescue by the maryland national guard, a woman is recovering from hypothermia. she was pulled from a snow covered car in accokeek. firefighters said the woman was trapped in the car for at least three days. she only had blankets to stay warm. when the ambulance could not get through the snow, the national guard used a humvee to get to

her. a scary situation in loudoun. a barn in aldie collapsed under the snow. county rescue crews rescued all 40 horses inside but had to dig one out. >> from the sky, a look at the streets from prince george's county this morning. some of them look pretty good, others look like they need some work still. plow crews had hoped to have the roads passable by 9:00 tonight. four four officials are aware that the tracking system shootaround down yesterday. >> it crashed. with an historic event we have a high volume of users logging into the system and the system crashed. >> it's important to know roads that are passable under county standards aren't necessarily all clear. you'll need to keep a look out for snow and ice patches. it's about 5:51. time for weather and traffic on

hundred road. that's a tractor trailer as well. as you can see, your route probably fairly green. we do have a couple spots one of them indian head highway at old fort road. they're clearing snow and that's clearing just a bit. and outerloop at braddock, we're jammed for about a mile and a half. involving three vehicles. two of them jackknifed tractor trailers. we'll have that video coming up. amelia is up near 270 at old hundred road. you must have gone by it coming northbound. how did it look? >> reporter: exactly, melissa. so, driving by, right now, we're on 270 southbound, right around the damascus/germantown area, if you will. all lanes were getting by at that point, you can see we're traveling past that accident, it looks like as we drove by, everything had been pulled over to the shoulder.
