getting a message from metro to keep you safe. >> donald trump keeps his word tonight, skipping out on the debate. the front runner was on another stage just a few miles away. >> folks, we're still not completely rid of all of that snow, but crews are making progress. and the official word came from opm just in the last couple of hours, federal offices open tomorrow, but employees do have the option for unscheduled leave or tele-work. >> there are shoulder lanes and sidewalks that still need to be cleared. and some districts are waiting until moend nday to bring the students back to school. let's start at storm center 4 with a look at how cold it's going to get tonight. >> add those people on the roads tomorrow, some ice and once again, it's a recipe for problems on our friday commute.

but take a look at the numbers here. not just yet. we're not seeing the freezing numbers just yet. 32 in baltimore, 32 in ft.belmawr. we have not cooled nearly as fast as we did last night. and i don't expected to. however, by tomorrow morning, most areas will see some ice, icy patches in most areas. travel troubles, again, yeah, take your time. as i've been saying the last couple of days, pack your patience. you're going to need that, for sure. driving ice-covered roads, you know you're going to see those just like you did at this point. parking obviously an issue with all of that snow on the side roads. we'll talk about the weekend and then, warm eer temperatures and all the snow gone by the middle of next week. it could happen. >> all right, doug, thank you. just four days before the caucuses, there were dualing republican events. first, a debate with all the top

points in south carolina. but in new hampshire, sanders holds a commanding 19 point lead over clinton. that's where she has challenged sanders to another debate. sanders accepted the challenge and both sides wait for the party to sign off. former governor is not polling higher than 3% in iowa, new hampshire or south carolina. >> six d.c. high school students could be charged with felonies for this attack at the gallery-place metro station this morning. it is the latest in a series of assaults in recent months. news 4's megan fitzgerald is live with what metro is going to keep you safe. >> at any given time, there are officers outside metro stations and inside. they say there's thou sands of cameras that earlier this morning, as cameras were rolling and officers were out when a group of teens attacked a man in a metro station.

>> there's many things commuters were thinking about when heading to their destination. >> i'm look for a job and going to places and networking. >> safety is top of mind. >> there's a lot of it. dangerous people out there. >> take this morning, for instance. metro police released this surveillance video showing a 35-year-old man getting attacked. investigators say when the victim got off at gallery place, a teen sucker punched him. several other teenagers jumped in before they hopped on the metro and took off. but less than an hour later, at the woodly park station, six suspecteds were taken into custody. then, last month, at the noma station, investigators say this 17-year-old suspected punched a man in the face. metro police made an arrest in this case, too. >> these kids are just wild. >> you need to be aware of your surroundings. >> staying alert during the commute is important. but metro says police are also

constantly monitoring riders and thousands of surveillance cameras are all around. so if or when something happens, metro says they'll be watching. >> i mean, i have a lot of confidence in the system. and i think anything can happen anywhere. >> now, metro says if you see something suspicious or you want to give officers a heads up, you can send a text message to mmtpd and an officer will respond. >> megan, thank you. a d.c. firefighter who was set to retire before facing discipline for a botched emergency response now has to stay on the job. d.c. fire and ems is blocking the retirement. he will now face a trial board for failing to respond to a call of a toddler choking on a grape. the 18-month-old later died. valentine was just blocks away, but didn't update his status with dispatchers and paramedics more than a mile away were

acceptability, instead. valentine submitted retirement paperwork earlier this month. he's expected to appeal the decision. >> a first look at what really went down when oregon state police and f.b.i. agents cornered and other protesters. a showdown that left one of them dead. the f.b.i. just released its video. the video shows the boy nearly run over an agent and then barrelling towards a police barricade. crashed his truck into the snow. initially, he gets out with his hands in the air surrounded by troopers. but then, he reaches toward his jacket. we're stopping the video just before he's shot and killed. the f.b.i. says he had a 9 millimeter gun in that pocket. the number of armed occupiers is down to just a handful of people who are willing to leave if they're not prosecuted. >> in just a few hours, virginia

lawmakers introduce a major compromise on the commonwealth. it includes concessions from democrats and republicans. explaining what it will mean for gun owners and gun buyers. david? >> good evening, jim. you might say that virginia lawmakersre pifliving up to the commonwealth's slogan, finding common ground when it comes to gun laws. they're calling this a mile stone. and we do expected a press conference to be held tomorrow to make this official announcement. but we want to show you, here's how this could break out. for one, democrats would back off controversial plans to block concealed weapon permits from 25 states. that's a big win for gun owners. and return to gop would support a measure that prohiblts folks. republicans have amgs agreed to have state police at gun shows

some thought it was tremors, but they were actually sonic booms from f-35 and f-18 fighter jets. the navy says they were conducting training and created at least nine sonic booms in an hour and a half. it tops out at nearly 1200 miles an hour. they're based in st. mary's county. >> tonight, a $10,000 reward up for grabs for whoever can help police find two suspects in a string of burglaries in silver spring. seven burglaries at two town hall communities just a couple of miles away from one another. in each case, no one was home and the specs got in by breaking windows or doors. they're just about to use a credit card stolen from one of those homes. if you think you know who they are, you're urged to give police a call. >> next at 11:00, cracking down on local shoveling laws. >> some sidewalks are still, tonight, covered in snow and ice.

at least 20 inches of snow. and the storm affected more than 100 million people in dozens of states. >> we've bceen talking all week about the importance of clearing the snow off of your sidewalks. now, one local county says it's done giving warnings about that. starting tomorrow, if you haven't shovelled the snow off of your sidewalk, you could get a stick et. news 4's shomari stone is in college park with more on this. >> reporter: well, doreen, we talked to people out here in prince george's county and they are pleased that the county is going to enforce the snow removal law. many of them plan oncoming out here tomorrow, grabbing a shovel like this one and removing the ice off of the sidewalk in front of their homes. some tell me that they are concerned about slipping and falling and they say they're going to remove the snow and ice because they don't want to get a fine. >> so this is a lot of snow that you're going to have to remove. >> i'm not happy, but, you know --

today, a permanent permit was denied. the tree house hangs over into public space by about two feet and neighbors complained. it's unclear when the homeowners will have to take it down. >> quite a twist when a police officer pulled over an erratic driver this morning. >> the vehicle is on the road here just having a baby: >> inside the car, a pregnant woman and her mother rushing to the hospital in alexanderia. >> i said push. and the baby come. >> no, he wasn't waiting. he was ready to come out. >> this is kenya sierra's third baby. she's named him joshua. >> another cold night coming our way before we get into a weekend of some serious melting.

>> yeah, let's head back to the storm center. here is doug. what can we expect overnight? >> well, guys, we can expect more freezing as we have seen the past couple of nights. but one thing we're not going to see, last night at this time, we were already down into the teens in some areas and that is just not the case, not everybody below freezing just yet. take a look at the numbers. you see where we are. plenty of cloud cover, a temperature of 36 degrees at the airport. winds out of the south at 5 miles an hour. so two reasons why we're staying above freezing. it's the clouds. once again, they act like a blanket to keep that heat in. winds out of the south, that's keeping us on the mild side. but it is below freezing around martinsburg, freezing in frederick, around baltimore. and, as we move on through the rest of the night tonight, most other areas will fall below freezing, too. so we will see that refreeze tomorrow morning. here's that cloud cover coming from two separate systems. earlier this week, it looks like they may come together to form one system that could get us a

little more snow. it's nothing to worry about, that system. first system, moving out to sea. the second notching in with more cloud cover. could give us a chance for a flurry tomorrow. maybe even a quick snow shower. and then, behind it, it gives us much colder temperatures. overnight tonight, temperatures will fall. that's when we're going to see the ice around the region. in the district, maybe staying just above the freezing mark here. again, a lot of ice in the area. notice by 1:00, we're still in the 30s. and the windchills will be in the 20s. so that school bus forecast, a lot of schools going back tomorrow: 30 degrees, rather slick between 7:00 and 8:00 tomorrow afternoon. 3:00 and 4 cloek, cold, make sure the kids have on the coats, the gloves, whatever. windchill around 25 at that time. here are those wind which i ams. e7 a.m., 25-30. same deal at noon, but by 4:00,

they actually drop because of the winds and the cold air moving in. windchills between 20 and 25 degrees. so a very cold afternoon on our friday, for sure. and then we start to warm. and not guilty e not just warm, we really start to warm. 42 on saturday. 49 on sunday. great day on sunday. great weekend for skiing if you're thinking about doing that. 63 degrees on monday. 63. that's not the warmest weekend. we go 59 on tuesday as the front moves down the south of us and the front moves right back to the north. we get rain on wednesday with a high of 65 degrees. wednesday is the day that we're really worried about. here's the current snow cover. you add in the 60s, you add in the rain and we get a really good flood threat watching that all through next week. but one thing to rebel, guys, watch out early tomorrow morning. a refreeze is on. >> all right, we will. >> coming up, the terps come up >> coming up, the terps come up huge against the hawkeyes.

strorng tonight at home. >> best win of the season. and the atmosphere down there, ewe know, including last season, maryland, they are 10-0 following a loss. not a great sign for third-ranked iowa hawkeyes. not to mention the terps were at home tonight coming in. they have won 24 straight games at the xfinity center. it was the first-ever meeting of the program of two top ten teams squaring off.

cal ripken, jr., in that house and he saw a competitive game. he had 11 points. terps up six at halftime. he had 17 points and 7 boards tonight. terps did battle back. he was critical for maryland tonight. nice drive here. he gets that to go. hangs in the air a little bit. later on in the game, maryland holding onto a two-point game. the freshman, diamond stone, throws that down. terps beat the hawkeyes, first win over a ranked team this season.
