25 degrees in gaithersburg. so the school day forecast if you do have to acceptsepnd youro school, 30 by recess and we'll give it a c as winds start to pick up. this issue at the outer loop at gallows road, we are still quite slow through that area. we have just the left lane getting by. so we'll keep an eye on that one for you. northbound 3rd street tunnel, still being diverted to massachusetts avenue because of the snow clearing operation. the other situation as far as snow clearing, 270 north at 121 clarksburg road, you have to stay left past the plow. 270 here at montrose road, no problems northbound or southbound. we'll take a live look at the beltway and that issue on the beltway coming up. federal workers are heading in to work on time this morning. employees do have the option to take up scheduled leave or tell that work.

metro returns to regular service today, as well, but you still could run into some delays. there will be fewer 8 car trains in service because of the storm. yellow line trains to and from franconia springfield will also resume today. only a few metrobus routes have a few detours. today you have to get out your shovels if you live in prince george's county. the sidewalk clearing law is put into action. megan mcgrath, how are the sidewalks where you are? >> reporter: well, we've been driving around college park this morning early this morning. and actually we found that a lot of people have already done the work of shoveling their sidewalks just like this person here. and today is the day. they will start enforcing the laws in terms of homeowners or residents making sure that everything is clear on the sidewalk. and there are some people who still have some work to do. you take a look just a short way done here, you can see that this sidewalk is completely snow

covered here. i can kind of dig my heel down and you can see the pavement down there. so it's not a long stretch. i'd say maybe about half a block here, but this is the kind of thing that needs to be cleaned up. now, the law in prince george's county is that they give you 48 hours after a 2 inch or more snowfall to clear your sidewalks. because of all of the snow that we had, they actually gave people a little bit longer and that grace period, though, is ending today. so let's take a look at the specifics here. the fine for not shoveling your walk is $100. the fine goes up every 24 hour. so you can get more than one ticket. they will be concentrating on areas between a mile and a half of schools, churches and assembly halls. but really the law is that every residential area has to be shoveled. so the sidewalk in front of your house, beside your house,

anything that abuts the property or where you're staying, that has to be cleared off. but of course they will be paying special attention to polices where there are a lot of folks, a lot of pedestrians walking around. and thus the schools trying to get everybody back to school. so everyone is asked to get out there, do their part and shovel those walks. back to you all. a break this morning for some drivers slapped with tickets for parking on the snow emergency routes in the district. the city will forgive more than 2800 tickets that were given out on friday. that's the first day of the blizzard. that's about $700,000 in this fines the city will not collect. tickets handed out on the other five days of the snow emergency still have to be paid. i'm erika gonzalez at the live desk. a drone snapped precise images at least that's what iran is saying. state television is reporting the drone flew over the carrier as part of apongoing naval drill

democrats an republicans. one measure will stop people from carrying a firearm if they're under a permanent protective order from a domestic violence offense. in the past republicans have repeatedly rejected this measure. >> i mean, if we can get a bill through that actually takes firearms away from folks who are the subject of a protective order, the perpetrator, take the firearm away for two years, that will go a long way. >> republicans have also agreed to require state police to be present at gun shows to perform vol up tea voluntary background. check back with us take on an update on the murder case involving sandra levy. the man convicted of killing her is expected in court this afternoon as part of the retrial. his lawyers say a witness deliberately misled rors. levy disappeared in 2001, but her body was not discovered for another year. the new trial begins in march. we will find out this

morning where the district plans to place additional affordable housing. at 11:00, mayor muriel bowser will announce the 12 project winners. they're expected to add 800 units in the city. today the man charged with the murder of two maryland sisters heads back to court. it has taken more than 40 year, but yesterday lloyd welch jr. made his first court appearance. a judge appointed an attorney for welch. he is charged with the disappearance of 12-year-old sheila lyon and her sister in 1975. the sisters were walking from their house to wheaton plaza mall. the their bodies have never been found. a warm-up is finally in sight. what you can expect this weekend and how soon we could start seeing temperatures back in the mid-60s. hours and hours spending helping neighbors dig out. the bonus that a driver didn't

there no immunity at all. >> right few will are reported cases in virginia, minnesota and california. but officials say in those cases the people were infected while traveling abroad. now the latest in the ongoing federal land standoff in offering organize. the fbi has released some video of the scene. you can see lavoy finicum nearly run over an agent before crashing through a police barricade. initially he gets out of the vehicle with his hands in the air surrounded by state troopers. but then he reaches toward his jacket. we stopped the video just before finicum is shot and killed. the fbi said he had a gun in that pocket. just a handful of armed protesters remain at that wildlife refuge. a suspect is heading back to court today charged with the death of a victim visiting northwest d.c. from dallas for a wedding when he was randomly

attacked. he tied after falling an hitting his head on the ground. metro riders are thinking harder about safety after a violent attack at the gallery place metro station. six d.c. high school students could be charged with felonies in this incident. investigators say when the victim got off at gallery place, a teen punched him. others jumped in punching and kicking the man before they hop ord ed on a departing train. they were arrested a few stops later. >> i have a lot of confidence in the system and i think anything can happen anywhere. >> met row wants its riders to feel safe. it says police are constantly monitoring riders and thousands of surveillance cameras are throughout the system. last weekend's snowstorm is one for the records. it was the fourth most powerful to hit the northeast in more than 60 years. 24 million people were hit with

freezing. by noon, we're still in the upper 30s, but we really start to notice the winds pick up. so it will feel like temperatures are in the upper 20s. here is your hourly planner for your saturday tomorrow a high of 44. so warmer than take. and winds not an issue. once again we'll track mostly to partly sunny skies throughout the day. really not a bad today at all tomorrow except for the start. s it is going to be frigid. 25 in the district and teens in the suburbs. but after that, we'll warm up nicely and a lot of meltinging going on this weekend. sunday a high around 50, partly sunny skies. monday look at this, a high of 63 degrees. i think most of the snow will be gone. we'll have melted by monday or tuesday. can't rule out maybe a light shower later in the day on monday. but keeping a really close eye on wednesday with a chance of rain. i'll have more on why we're keeping a cle eye on wednesday coming up in a little bit. but for now going to send things over to miss melissmelissa.

we still have the issue outer loop at gallows road. but take a look, your commute probably pretty light in general right now if you're coming in on any main road here this morning. so everything looking pretty good. you have to watch out, though, they are still clearing the roadways and we still gave some lanes missing on various roads. outer loop at gallo, finally having two lanes getting by the overturned vehicle. outer loop at old georgetown, report of an accident there. not seeing it it on camera of course. st doesn't mean it's not the there. 270 north at clarksburg, stay left past the plows. crews are still working to fix a water main break in alexandria. about 18 homes on east glendale avenue are affected. and still dealing with low water pressure this morning. the road has been closed since before 11:00 p.m. last night. no word when it will be completed. and what many believe was busted water main in the district turned out to be a fire hydrant that was somehow knocked over underground.

water giushed for hours along calvert street. d.c. water says it's possible a plow could have hit it. a dentist accused of taking advantage sexually of a patient during a procedure is out of jail. police say he assaulted a patient who went to get a cracked tooth repaired. the patient was under anesthesia, but woke up during the assault. the dentist was placed under supervision. one of the cars used by pope francis during his visit to the u.s. last fall will be up for auction today. that hope mobile became an entity all in itself during the visit. the d.c. and if i wouldly advph traveled around in the fiat. one will be on display at the auto show, the other will be put on the auction block today during a black tie gala.

1972. so why are these caucuses so important some well, this is really an early indication of who might drop out because of a lack of support and a lack of money. who is it well there can determine who you will get to vote for in virginia's primary in march and maryland's in april. there has only been one instance when a fourth place finisher went on to become the party's nominee. iowa chose ronald ray began, bill clinton, george w. bush and obama. hillary clinton and sanders is neck and neck among democrats in iowa. clinton leads by just three points. but in new hampshire, sanders holds a commander 19 point lead. that's where clinton has challenged sanders to another debate. and now both sides will wait for the party to sign off. tonight be sure to watch nbc "nightly news" with lester holt

out of this station in tenleytown when a 911 call came in about a toddler choking on a grape. according to a review, they did not tell dispatchers the stat it is status of the medical unit. the 18 month old later die. he's expected to appeal the latest ruling. it could be some of the warmest weather we've seen this weeks. amelia is tracking a freeze and then a big temperature change. it was a dramatic rescue that put firefighters to the test. how they're now being honored for heroism.

training runs off the jersey coast. the jets are based in maryland at pawtaxent river. another rest has been made in southern california as the opportunity continues for three escaped inmates. the orange county sheriff's office arrested this 44-year-old woman who taught at the jail. officials believe the men stole a white van and could be living in it right now. police need your help identifying the thiefs who have targeted two montgomery county townhouse communities. there have been seven burglaries in two neighborhoods in silver spring just a couple miles apart. the suspects got this by breaking windows and door while nobody was home. investigation gaetd tors say the picture we will show you here is the two people just about to use the credit cards stolen. if you think you know who these people are, give montgomery

county police a call. isaiah is claiming responsibility for a deadly bombing that targeted yemen presidential palace. at least eight people died in yesterday's bombing. 17 others were hurt. yemen's president was inside the palace at the time of the attack. he was not hurt. howard county school officials take action after a white studio's video about the black lives matter movement goes viral. the video shows the student making racist remarks. the superintendent sent a letter to parents denouncing the video and says it will not be tolerated. the student has since posted a message on social media apologizing. 5:48 now. the jefferson davis highway is keeping its name for now. according to inside nova.com, no one on the arlington county board offered to take on the bill to rename the highway. a proposal was included in the board's 2016 legislative package. there has been an effort in other parts of the country to change landmark names after the

confederacy. if the plan moves out of the general assembly, the change would have to be approved by governor mcauliffe. two huge sinkholes opened up on the same streets in southwest oregon. the largest of the two actually took out most of the travel lanes on a major highway there. the second one right across the street both ended up within a short -- opened up i should say within a short period of time. the section of the highway still closed. flint, michigan is struggling to figure out out how to deal with with its water contamination crisis. senate democrats want to give the city $400,000 to replace the lead pipes that have tainted the water. but they want the state to put up the same amount of money. governor rick snyder has not responded to the proposition. experts say removing the lead pipe is the only permanent solution to the problem. reads are drinking state provided bottle water for weeks as officials debate how to fix

this roproblem. the navy rescued a japanese pan who went adrift off the coast. he was safely located early wednesday morning. plans for a solar farm in frederick county are moving forward. the proposed solar farm off clyde young road is being considered by the zoning board. those against it say the solar farm would change the character of the agricultural areas. if the plan is approved, solar farm won't be built until 2018 at the earliest. co-founder of jefferson airplane has died. paul can paul kantner died at a hospital in san francisco yesterday. he suffered a heart attack earlier this week. 5:51 is our time now.
