all eyes are on iowa. i'm aaron gilchrist in des moines. we're giving you an inside look at what's happening here just one day before iowans become the first in the nation to start choosing our next president. a second teenager from our area arrested in connection to the abduction and murder of a 13-year-old virginia girl. we're live with new reaction to the sickening crime. and you are looking live at the white house. find out why it was locked down today. news4 at 6:00 starts now. news4's aaron gilchrist is in des moines right now as we count down to the iowa caucus. all of the candidates on the gop and democratic side are stumping for support as they prepare for tomorrow's big vote. the democratic national

committee strikes a deal with the candidates and poll numbers show a tight race, but first, aaron gives us a taste of the political fever spreading throughout iowa. >> reporter: this really is the center of the political universe this weekend. all the candidates are criss-crossing the state right now, some 2,000 journalists are here to cover the first real voting of decision 2016, and none of all this hoopla is lost on the locals. this political billboard is the first thing you will see leaving the des moines airport. ben carson's face is the last thing you will see before you take off. and all over the city the signs that it's caucus season remind you for des moines and all of iowa, this first in the nation nominating vote is a big deal. >> it's the whole reason i'm at georgetown and in d.c. >> reporter: scott is finishing his senior year studying politics at georgetown. he made the trip back to johnston, iowa to see his parents but really to caucus.

>> there's nowhere else i can conversations where you go to your person down the street and say this is why i support candidate x, what are your issues you're concerned about? how can i get to you come over to my size? >> reporter: they are like most iowa families, talking politics matters and caucusing matters even more. it's a deeply held tradition. makesing it up with the candidates face to face, unique experiences. >> in all those interactions, i think they build up to that. how friendly they are, can you access them? some of them you can't. >> reporter: as seriously as iowans take their caucusing, the crush of celebrity kehelps keep the mood light. >> making fun of iowa, the candidates, just the whole process. you got to be able to laugh at yourself a little bit. >> obviously people are coming and staying at the hotels and eating at the restaurants. overall it's great to have people here in town and liking

iowa. >> reporter: and with all the campaign stats, the media and the political tourists liking iowa, caucus time also means a good time. in des moines, aaron gilchrist, news4. and all of the candidates are working hard to get that last-minute support before the caucuses tomorrow. both donald trump and ted cruz went to church this morning before stumping for votes later in the day. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders both held rallies. the most recent iowa polls shows trump with a five-point edge over cruz, and clinton with a two-point edge over sanders which is a statistical dead heat. soon after the iowa caucus, democratic voters will get a chance to see their candidates share the same stage. msnbc today announced the dnc has agreed to sanction a debate for 9:00 p.m. on thursday, february 4th, at the university of new hampshire. chuck todd and rachel maddow will moderate, and be sure to open the nbc washington app for the latest on decision 2016.

right now, police are trying to piece together the mysterious death of a blacksburg teen. two virginia tech students have been arrested in connection with the crime and one of them is from laurel. that's where news4's darcy spencer is tonight following the story. she spoke to neighbors about everything unfolding. >> reporter: both of those virginia tech students are from right here in howard county. the young lady who was arrested this morning lived right up the street but no one answered when we knocked. this is the mug shot of natalie keepers, a 19-year-old virginia tech student charged in connection with the murder of a missing teen from blacksburg. david eisenhauer is charged with killing the girl, 13-year-old nicole lovell. keepers was arrested this morning and is being held without bond. >> 19-year-old natalie marie keepers has been charged by blacksburg police with one felony count of improper

disposal of a body and one count of accessory after the fact. >> reporter: we went to her home in laurel. no one answered the door. neighbor lee korel says news of the arrest was surprising. >> i actually was quite a bit shocked when i heard this a couple hours or so ago. they were a perfectly normal family. nothing. there's nothing to indicate there's anything unusual, et cetera. >> reporter: eisenhauer, an 18-year-old freshman majoring in engineering is charged with be a duthi abducting and murdering nicole. he's a former track star. nicole's body was found in north carolina saturday afternoon. she had been missing for days after leaving home without her parents' knowledge. >> we have determined that eisenhauer and nicole were acquainted prior to her disappearance. eisenhauer used this relationship to his advantage to abduct and then kill her. >> reporter: police say they're pursuing hundreds of leads and

enough for people with mobility or health issues. news4's derrick ward talked with some d.c. and maryland residents finding it very hard to get around. >> reporter: james woods can get around without his motorized chair. he's got a prosthetic leg, but when there's snow on the ground, the chair would appear to be the safer option. >> i got out there. my leg came off. >> reporter: but his chair is only as good as the surface it travels on. just hours before we caught up with him. >> mud on all my tires and traction, then i fall out the chair. >> reporter: add to that the fact the bus stops are blocked by plow walls. some passenger pickups are impoe advised, for him it's not that easy. >> driver, he let the ramp down like on the street but that makes it difficult when you're trying to go up because the water on your tires and it's slippery. >> reporter: and in ft. washington, the plows cleared the road but created more of a problem for the kirks. bts where they dump the snow

snow are unintentional side effects of all the plowing. well, it happened fast. if you didn't see that fireball streaking through the sky last night, here it is. wtop captured it on video in the sky over falls church, virginia. we slowed down the video so you can see it a little better. social media had people going is that what i think i just saw? the american meteor society says there were hundreds of sightings on the east coast. meanwhile, storm team4 meteorologist amelia segal possibly tracking rain in your forecast. >> exactly. talking about rain tomorrow but especially on wednesday. we will keep a close eye on wednesday for the potential of flooding across the area. here are the weather headlines. for tomorrow you want to have the umbrella handy. wednesday as well. most of the snow in washington and areas to the south will have melted by wednesday. areas to the north it looks like the snow will melt there by week's end, maybe heading into the early part of the weekend. and, again, you see it here,

to see the exact time temperature in your area head to my facebook and twitter pages. the flooding impact for this week, tomorrow a good idea to clear the drains. so as we see snow continuing to melt and rain showers moving through tomorrow and wednesday, that water has somewhere to go. so tomorrow the rain showers could be an issue if drains aren't clear. tuesday we start to keep a close eye on creeks and streams for the potential of some minor flooding in those areas. wednesday the snow melt combined with more rain could lead to flooding concerns on area waterways and also urban areas again where drains have not been cleared. here is future weather. wednesday morning, 6:00 a.m., rain already impacting that commute. you can see as we head into the second half of the day, some heavier rain moves through the area. we're looking at anywhere from half an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall on wednesday. there's a 100% chance you're dealing with rain on wednesday but near record warmth as well. a high of 63. the record to beat is 65.
