happened when an orange line train missed a signal on the track. the train that ran a red signal was brought by a controlled stop by a controller at the met metrorail. the federal transit administration was notified in the overnight hours, and there's an investigation ongoing. more as we learn it. police in prince george's county are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man. police were called to southern avenue in temple hills this morning. they found a man who had been shot. he later died at the hospital. there is no word on a motive or a suspect in this case. we learned three people are displaced and a dog died in a fire in riverdale this morning. you can see smoke coming out of the house that burned on auburn avenue. the prince george's county fire department says the fire caused $100,000 worth of damage. they're working to figure out how it got started. one person remains in critical condition and three others are injured after a crash in prince george's county. it happened last night on route

seven days in ten minutes. >> thank you very much. maryland's largest school district now has a new leader. that is dr. jack smith who is unanimously voted in as superintendent of montgomery county public schools last night. his contract doesn't start until july officially, so he says he's ready to spend the next five months learning about the school district. another step towards a pretty bigr8i budget increase fairfax county schools next year. the school board has voted 9-3 to approve the superintendent's $2.6 billion budget. it includes raises for all employees and a plan to lower class sizes in elementary schools. the county board of supervisors still has to be convinced that the nearly 5% increase in spending is needed after years of cuts. after the break, a look at how much protection the vaccine for whooping cough is actually giving you and your children.

>> i'm megan mcgrath in temple hills where police are looking for the gunman who fatally shot a man in the courtyard of the south point apartments. >> we heard boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: margaret carroll heard the gunshots but she thought better of looking out the window. >> sometimes it ain't good to look out the windows, the bullets don't have no names. >> reporter: it was around 12:30 when the shots rang out in the courtyard outside the south point apartments on southern avenue. when police arrived, they found a man on the ground, he later died at the hospital. police have not released much information, but they have said they don't believe this is a random act of violence. there was some sort of a connection between the shooter and the victim. so the search is on for the killer. there are surveillance cameras at the apartment complex, but it's unclear if they captured anything that could help police close this case. it's been a violent couple of days in prince george's county. four people including a toddler have been murdered so far this

district. d.c.'s department of health is confirming three cases, all of them involve people who contr t contracted zika while traveling abroad. one of the three patients was pregnant at the time. the virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites and is linked to severe birth defects. d.c.'s department of health is reminding residents that they are not at risk saying it is important for residents to remember that there is no immediate threat to their health and wellbeing if they have not traveled to the known affected areas. new information from scientists in brazil. the presence of active zika virus was discovered in urine and saliva samples, despite the outbreak in brazil, they say there are no plans to cancel the summer olympic games. today marks six months until the games in rio.

this morning we're learning disturbing new details in the murder of a 13-year-old girl. a pair of virginia tech students carefully planned the crime. the teen overcame serious medical issues in only to be murdered in sense ale lesensele.

>> reporter: the killing of 13-year-old nicole lovell was a carefully carried out plan by these two, david eisenhower and keepers. eisenhower and keepers came up with the idea to take lovell to a remote area and cut her throat. eisenhauer picked up lovell at her home where she was waiting after climbing out her bedroom window. all three drove to a remote area where nicole was killed. according to police, with nicole's body in eisenhauer's lexus sedan, the pair went to a sexual mart to buy cleaning products to clean up their crime before driving to north carolina.

keepers said she was excited to be part of something secretive and special. at the hearing keepers testified she had mental health issues including suicidal thoughts. she said a semicolon tattoo behind her ear represented a promise not to do anything suicidal again. she told the judge if i do get bail, parents will start looking for psychiatrists near my house. keepers bail request was denied. loving, smiling all the time. >> reporter: on thursday, the small community of blacksburg, virginia said good-bye to a little girl who survived a rare liver tumor, overcame lymphoma, fought off a serious respiratory infection and battled bullying by classmates. >> she fought so hard to get to this point in her life. and then you have people like that, just take her innocence from her. it's just heartbreaking. >> it is day three in the court for the convicted murderer who

a high temperature today of 43 degrees. quiet weather for the weekend. the winds not an issue. we'll have more clouds on saturday than sunday, and sunday temperatures will also be warmer. i think if i had to pick a day this weekend, sunday looking to be a little bit nicer. monday on into tuesday, we're watching a storm system, a high on monday of 44. what it looks like right now is rain moving into the area later on monday. snow starts to mix in in spots overnight. and then we'll track rain and snow showers on tuesday. we could be tracking, though, all snow showers on tuesday. and that could lead to some accumulations. there's a lot of uncertainty with this storm system. of course we'll have the latest on new 4 at 4:00. a dry wednesday, maybe a few flurries, but cold and 34 on thursday. >> thanks. that's it for news 4 midday. thank you very much for joining us. we are back on the air this afternoon first at 4:00. >> you can get your news any time, weather updates, too with the nbc washington app.
