you learned? >> reporter: good morning, we're at westin hospital center we just finished talking to officials on the scene. around 1:30 this morning, a 53-year-old man showed up here with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper body. he went to a hospital entrance that was locked and proceeded to fire a round into one of the glass doors to get into the hospital to get medical attention. now, once inside, hospital personnel were able to get to him. we're told that another shot was fired. security was able to get him under control and were able to render aid to him before he was stabilized and transferred to an e.r. unit. again, this happened around 1:30 this morning. we're told here the good news is that know hospital staff, nobody was injured. again, is this apparently all started as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. and a couple of other shots were fired here on scene at westin

hospital center. that's the latest here from the scene. we're going to work to establish a better picture for you and get that to you. aaron and eun. >> is the hospital still open right now, are they taking other patients? >> reporter: so these doors were locked. we're told that this area is starting to receive patients. so we're being moved, as a matter of fact right now. they're working to clear the scene of glass that was at the one of the entrances. there are multiple entrances to the hospital. but things should be getting back to normal in the next couple of minutes if not hours. >> thank you. let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. it is a weather alert day. we need to find out what's going on out there, chuck? >> thanks, everybody. 6:01 on your wednesday. weather headlines, a fresh coating of flurries overnight tonight. and another chance later this afternoon into the early evening hours. colder air is set to move into the area.

and bitter cold air is coming our way for the weekend. current temperatures are in the upper 20s to 30 degrees. so, we're just below the freezing mark this morning. watch out any untreated surfaces from this little clipper here could indeed have a coating of ice on them first thing. the treated roads and big roads not a problem. side streets sometimes, the trickiest part of the day, holding on to the rail and getting down the steps on the front part of your house. here's the way the next 24 hours looks. just icy in random spots. temperature 29, by 7:00 tonight, 31. 23 tomorrow morning. that's the leading edge of much colder air coming our way for the weekend. dealing with the cold this morning is my colleague tom kierein in the storm team 4 x 4, good morning. >> yeah, right now, we're here in northern montgomery county. there's a live view there looking out of the front of the storm team 4 x 4, riding in the back with irene johnson at the

wheel. bho most of the roads are well treated. this has been well salted which may -- black ice, something you got to watch out with subfreezing temperatures we have this morning. temperatures here in the storm team 4x4 here at 27 degrees. so far so good with mostly dry roads, melissa. >> i'm glad to hear that you're doing just fine there in montgomery county. 270 south after buckeyestown pike. you can s a slow down that should get out of the way. folks with the normal commute, normal volume heading southbound out of frederick. eastbound 50 still closed at kent narrows bridge. we'll see if a chopper can head that way. big look at the belt beawway.

all of the routes nice and green. you can see the right side of the screen, the gray, the white, light great color, that is the precipitation moving out of the area right now. that's good as far as my roads go. 95 at lorton road, no problem. northbound and southbound. travel times in ten minutes. some kids get to sleep in again today. school districts are delaying around the area. maryland, frederick county, washington county, and calvert county schools opening two hours late. >> we only have one delay in virginia. a two-hour late opening at spotsylvania county schools. we'll be following changes right

night and through the morning, a could be one or two spots through the day. no problems through the day. temperatures above freezing. and really not that much precipitation. as a result, minor issues at the most. as far as snow this morning, here goes the end of flurry round number one. still flurries along the western shore of the chesapeake bay, but most of that has moved on to the eastern shore. most round of flurries arrived between 3:00 and 7:00 into early this evening. your commuter forecast, plenty of clouds this morning. temperatures are below freezing. so it's a cold start. again, another round of flurries. temperatures should be in mid to upper 30s. as a result, i don't think that's going to have much of a stick to the roads effect. colder air is set to move into the area in a big way. starting overnight tonight, into tomorrow. then going on into the weekend. it's going to be real cold. the coldest air of the winter. blustery winds and windchills dropping below zero for good

number of hours over the weeki' give you a complete check of the forecast at 6:21. storm team 4x4 headed out to the damascus area. i've been texting back and forth with tom kierein, he's seeing mostly dry roads. in the back roads could get a little dicey or dusty. eastbound 50 now open at the kent narrows bridge. westbound lane still blocked for deicing. so, a warning for you there. tabling a big look at things, no major issues right now, 95 in virginia at lorton road, northboun northboun northbound/southbound going along fine. germantown. on time there as well. 66, bltway looks good so did 95 to quantico. remember to listen to our

friends at wtop 105 when you hop in your cars. new hampshire has spoken in decision 2016. bernie sanders has taken 60% of the votes there and earned 13 delegates. hillary clinton took 38% of the vote, she will have nine delegates into the national convention. moving to the republican side, a blowout win for donald trump. he took 35% of the votes and will get ten delegates out of new hampshire. ohio governor john kasich earning about 16% of the votes. he'll receive three. moving on to the senator from texas, ted cruz showing he took 12% of new hampshire voters earning him two delegates. jeb bush earning 7% and two delegates. marco rubio calling his showing disappointing, 10% of votes not enough to earn a single

delegate. after last night's loss, hillary clinton's team now focusing on super tuesday. aheading to alexandria. ti kaine is expected to speak at the kickoff event at 7:00 on lansdowne center drive off telegraph road. news4 has learned that governor mcauliffe worked out a compromise that another lane will be added to 66 eastbound inside the beltway. many republican leaders and in democrats did not like ideas of adding tolls to the route without extra lanes. this is just one part of the deal. we're expected to learn more in richmond this morning. this is incredible footage taken last week in fairfax county. it's the bird's-eye view from a helicopter at night from a lake rescue. we don't have that video right now. but a 17-year-old girl was

pulled from lake barcroft in falls church after she was missing. police used thermal vision and night images to spot her. the girl was taken to the hospital and expected to be okay. we're sitting on top of changing weather conditions across the area. a live look outside this morning where the roads are passable for the most part. no huge problems to deal with. we're going to check in with the crews on the stree

storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein live in the storm team 4x4. we have covered much of montgomery county this morning. found some areas of light snow covering streets and sidewalks in bethesda and rockville. then we travelled to poolesville where we found mostly dry pavement. right now, we're in downtown

damascus where we're seeing dry pavement for the most part. everything has been well treated by the county and state across most of the montgomery county, we're finding dry pavement, just a few patches that are looking a little bit wet. but everything has been well salted. the sidewalk area in downtown damascus, it, too, with a little bit of snow covering the sidewalk there. we're just about to turn on to 124 whitfield road, head south. and that, too, is looking all dry here this morning. everything well treated. after we did get a good dusting, three or four hours ago in montgomery county, with snow showers that came through from 1:00 to 3:00, it's dried out, travel is good in shape here in northern montgomery county in damascus. back to you. weather may be to blame for a school bus crash in montgomery

county that was on tuesday. you can see here from a traffic camera that the bus ended up in the front yard of a home on connecticut avenue in wheaton. again, we're having issues getting video to you. the driver was checked out by paramedics. there were no students on the bus at the time of the crash. breaking news in washington, as people have parts of m street closed after a deadly shooting. molette green is live there with the latest. mollett, what have you learned? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. first place and m street, this is the thurston quarter community. you see the crime tape. there's one, two -- three police cars here. this area blocked off all night long after a shooting here. a deadly shooting. when police got here after 9:00 last night, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. he went to the hospital, later pronounced dead there. died of his injuries. we're working to get more information. we're working to get a motive

and some suspect information. but this area is blocked off and will be for the foreseeable future and throughout the morning hours here. one person dead. deadly shooting. no suspect information at the time. working with police to try to get more information to get out to you. but that's the latest live here from the scene. and to give you a better idea where we are, we're just off of north capitol street, near the d.c. housing authority. this area is well-known by police as one of the trouble spots in the community. back to you. >> thanks mollett. a toxic culture is one of the reasons that the director of d.c. medical and fire says she's out. dr. jullette saussy submitted a full-page letter of resignation. on a one-on-one interview with jackie bensen, dr. saussy said there's a lack of cooperation when it comes to improving ems

service. she specifically cites training. she was met with a lot of resistance. in the interview, dr. saussy said the fire and ems should be separate departments. she believes one person cannot effectively do both jobs. an ems or firefighter. le following the resignation letter, mayor bowser office released a statement saying they're put in for the improving patient outcomes and delivering the change that residents expect and deserve. decision 2016 moves on to south carolina today. most of the candidates are already there after last night's primary in new hampshire tonight, donald trump who won the new hampshire primary will host a rally near clinton university. bernie sanders will be in new york where he anticipates an endorsement around noon. we'll keep an eye out for that

announcement. we are learning that last night's primary actually broke records. new hampshire secretary of state tells the hill magazine that 560,000 people cast ballots yesterday, breaking turnout records. there were long lines in the town of merrimack, the largest polling section in that state. many waiting are and voting for the first time. virginia officials expect many of you to cast your ballot in next month's primary vote. spotsylvania are actually closing schools on march 1st in anticipation of the high voter turnout. the schools are used as a polling station. a look at weather and traffic on the 1s. we look outside. we don't see anything falling from the sky in this picture. >> we did. the sky is not falling, aaron. you don't need to worry about that this morning. had one round of flurries that came through between 1:00 sand 4:00 this morning. i was driving on my way into the

office, most of you will not have to worry about snowflakes early this morning. another round coming our way later this afternoon. so let's go over to max 2 if we could. i'll show you that. this is our future weather presentation of what's happening later on this afternoon. 5:30 this afternoon. mostly cloudy skies. this next ripple comes through here. that's the next chance for flurries coming on in. be on the lookout for that. right now, though, temperatures are noticeably colder than yesterday morning. we're about 5 to 10 degrees colder than yesterday. most everyone is below freezing this morning. so if you see wet spots on the road, be careful. might be a little patch or two of black ice. as you plan out your day, mostly cloudy, temperatures upper 20s. breezy and colder this afternoon. temperatures climbing in upper 30s. another chance for flurries between 4:00 and 6:00 this evening as temperatures trend ever downward. the last of the snowflakes now

right along the immediate western shore of the bay. if you're traveling over the bridge and down into the lower eastern shore, you'll run back into the snowflake, for now, we're done dealing with them around the metro area. here's the next wave. you can sort of tell there's an overall counterclockwise swirl to the atmosphere. there's a big area of pressure in the atmosphere that's going to bring ever colder air back into the picture. a dry start. again, here's that mid to late afternoon into early evening chance. could be rain drops or snowflakes. temperatures should be above freezing. so it shouldn't stick to the road. but it is cold enough aloft. snowfall amounts, .2, .1, another possible coating, that's it. through the day, noticeably windier tomorrow. the seven-day forecast.

it last night. officials say the zika virus will not be a threat to the athletes that is because there are fewer mosquitos in brazil in august. the plan to provide d.c. workers with some of the most generous paid leave benefits in the nation is being scaled back. the revised bill calls for 12 weeks of paid leave rather than 16. the time you can use to recover from illness or care for a baby or a sick relative, the new plan also caps the benefits at $1500 a week. d.c. councilmember phil mendelson wants to pay for that leave with a 1% payroll tax. a live look outside again this morning at 6:25. the storm team 4 x 4, keeping an eye on changing conditions on the roads. as we're dealing with a little snow overnight and dealing with big time drop in

shooting at weston hospital. >> erika gonzalez on the scene. >> reporter: we were told by police that a man came to the westin center with a gunshot wound, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body. he came to one of the entrances that was locked. not an emergency room. he drove up to it, part of the hospital trying to gain multiple attention. there were multi taple shots fi on scene. one was sapphifired into a glas. then we're told that he fired another shot. that's when security arrived. they were able to restrain him. get him the medical attention that he needed. he was stabilized and then

returned to an e.r. unit. no medical staff were injured and they were able to get this man medical attention very quickly. we've been moved from that area of the hospital. they're trying to get things back in working order. they have a crew there cleaning all morning long, the glass around that area. things are starting to get back to normal here. a couple of shots were fired outside of the hospital entrances. >> so the hospital is open and operating, erika? >> reporter: yes, it is. >> thanks for that update. coming up with weather and traffic on the 1, with chuck bell. >> four things you need to know. today, a day filled with flurry chances. one flurry chance that's coming to an end. another chance for flurries coming in after 2:00, 3:00, up to 6:00 or 7:00 this evening. cold north winds start setting

>> i love to hear that. going to check in with tom kierein right now. >> reporter: yeah, right now, we're on route 27, ridge road, heading towards 270. now just to the west of damascus, where there are a few scattered flurries. and we can see those on the storm team 4 radar and the nbc washington app. right now, we have dry pavements throughout most of northern montgomery county. i did find a couple of parking lots and sidewalks that were very icy and areas that were untreated after an overnight dusting of light know is that came through. and that came right across montgomery county and the district. and prince george's county where it did put down a light coating. and it's sweepable. you can use a broom to sweep it off. and it's going to stay around here for the next several hours as we will say below freezing. storm team 4 temperature is at

that's why we're seeing the slowdowns. we'll be back at 6:41, going to take a look at 270 and some chopper looks. frederick county schools in maryland are opening two hours late as are washington county and calvert county schools in virginia. spotsylvania county schools running a two-hour delay. be sure to check the nbc washington app for all delays. now to decision 2016, a local veterans organization is expected a check from donald trump's campaign today. the donation comes from money he raised last month at the rally he held instead of debating in iowa. the va medical center in d.c. tells news4 that it received a phone call after that rally. a spokesperson said the campaign plans to make a donation to the fisher house. that's a place that helps veterans. no word on how much is being donated. a bid to wipe out fees for

concealed handgun permits in prince george's county has fail. corey made that appeal last month. he told them he didn't think gun owners should have to pay a fee to exercise their second amendment rights. but that fee waiver failed on a 4 to 4 vote. they pay $50 for the permit. muriel bowser will attend a ribbon cutting for a homeless shelter just for women. it's on fifth street northwest. the site was recently renovated to provide emergency and transitional housing for 200 women. this is all art of the mayor's plan to end homelessness in d.c. they will open a new shelter in each ward. today, cardinal donald wuerl will offer a special service in west washington. today is ash wednesday, it marks the season of fasting and prayers. the mass will begin at 12:10

this afternoon in virginia, the alfred baptist church in alexandria is offering ashes from your car. at 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. and noon and 1:00 p.m. a news4 i-team investigation. a growing risk for local firefighters and possibly your neighbors. the i-team found a rising number of local fires fueled by so-called hoarding or people storing too much clutter in their homes. nearly a dozen of them have been deadly in the area. tonight, prince george's's county firefighters will take us inside their special training to show us why hoarding is so dangerous when they're trying to combat those fires. >> every time you try to move something out of the way to get the next foot forward, something else falls down on top of you. >> now, the i-team also sits down with the family of one victim who explains the big piece of advice for anybody concerned about a loved one at risk. that's tonight at news4 at 5:00.

it's getting cold. windchills in the teens and 20s. layer the kids up on the way out the door. how much colder this weekend? that comes up in five minutes. we have this closing, 70 westbound after mount airy. all of the lanes are blocked. we'll get the chopper up to see what's going on from the sky. storm team meteorologist tom kierein is in the storm team 4x4 in montgomery county this morning. tom, how are the weather conditions where you are? >> reporter: yeah, just a few minutes ago, we were in damascus where i took this photo of a very slick parking lot. that is in damascus that has not been treated. it's all snow-covered and it's been posted on facebook and twitter, instagram, you may find your parking lots and your sidewalks looking like that. meanwhile, here in the storm team 4x4, we're traveling along,

355 in gaithersburg to the south. aaron, happy to report drive pavement on 355. and most of the rain roads and most of the side streets are in great condition here in montgomery county. they've been well treated overnight. after we had a dusting of light snow around 2:00 to 4:00 this morning. that did put down about a quarter inch in some parts of the northern part of the county. now, all around most of montgomery county, no travel problems on the road. everything is driving out. we're in great condition here now. back to you. >> all right, tom. thank you. we're following some breaking news in northwest washington. police have shut down part of m street for a deadly shooting investigation. news4's molette green is live there with the latest. what's happening? >> reporter: aaron, yes, good morning. we're in northwest d.c., here at m street. at first place northwest, as you can see, police still here on the scene with the crime tape blocking this part of where they

are investigating. we can tell you a man is dead, shot last night, just before 9:00 p.m., died of his injuries at the hospital. we're working to find out what led to the shooting. but we're right in the thurston quarter community. d.c. police have long had their eyes on this area, this trouble spot. we can tell you that surveillance cameras are up. i can see key spots here. i believe there are more down the street. my photographer is swinging over to show you. that may allow police to get a better picture of what happened here. this area, this community is called a weed and feed community. that's because police are focusing on this area, trying to get rid of violent crime here. but last night, a man lost his life here. we're working to get information on a motive and of course suspect

campaign manager jen o'malley dillon to reto messaging and strategy. we'll keep an eye on that. >> nbc tracie potts is with us from manchester. john kasich and bernie sanders seem to have momentum this morning. >> they certainly do. but going into south carolina is a different ball game. the kasich is polling at 1%. 1, in our latest poll in south carolina. even though he came in second here, a very strong finish, much more so than predicted, he got some more to do. he said he feels like he's going to be the target of some negative campaigning. he's got to figure out how to deal with that because he said he thought what worked for him up here was to keep the whole thing positive. sanders, on the other hand, is going into south carolina an underdog. this is where hillary clinton's numbers have been running strong

a full report coming up on "today" show. let's go to check bell for a look at the forecast. >> we have a mostly cloudy sky already in place. these clouds have been fleur rig on us earlier this morning. those flurries are now gone. storm team 4 radar shows the showers working their way over the bay and heads to the ocean. good riddance for the last chance for snow flurries. we may not be completely done with snow chances later on today because of a ripple in the atmosphere near charleston, west virginia, they do have winter advisories. that's what the purple shading is. but that ripple is due to arrive here by mid to late afternoon. that will be another chance, anyway, of getting a snowflake or a rain drop. temperatures are going to be generally speaking on the chilly side. but not all that cold by comparison for what's coming our way for the weekend. we're going out the door, temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s.

planning out your day, a nice rise today. early morning sunshine will put temperatures at mid to upper 30s. here's the high resolution computer model dry from now to lunchtime. after lunch, the clouds come back in. here's 5:00 this afternoon, this blossoming of green could be either rain drops for snowflakes. it's very cold aloft. it's coming down as snowflakes will be above freezing at the surface. i do think we'll have light snow flurries moving through here between 4:00 and 7:00 this evening. for tomorrow, another cold start. temperatures tomorrow morning. even colder than this one. and tomorrow's high temperature, we won't even get out of the 20s to me. and it's going to feel even colder than that. here's the future feels like factors, by tomorrow, midday, single numbers and teen. by tomorrow evening, windchills dropping back down into the single digits under about 11 here. by the time you get to friday morning, even colder than that. over the weekend, by sunday
