main break at a major montgomery county intersection. crews had to salt down veirs mill road and shut down some of the lanes there. news4's megan mcgrath is live where they're working to fix the break now. megan? >> reporter: barbara, certainly this cold weather is to blame for this water main break that you see behind me here. they're also having trouble closing off some of the valves to the water is still flowing to the broken pipe. lanes are closed on veirs mill road just north of connecticut avenue. if you look to the side of the road, you can also see we're having some issues with icing. it began yesterday as a crack in a 24-inch pipe under veirs mill road. then early this morning, a joint burst, creating a larger problem. water that froze onto the sidewalk, knocked carolyn gupta off her feet. >> i got up to the grass, laid

>> reporter: crews did treat the sidewalk. salt trucks will remain on standby until repair is finished. meantime, veirs mill road is down to one lane. and the impact will likely be felt for much of the day. >> once the water is out, typically six hours or so, it's definitely going to be all day today. hopefully we can get it done before the evening rush. but i'm not holding my breath on that one. >> reporter: you can see here this gentleman trying to get by on the sidewalk. the ice has been a real challenge here. we still have water that's coming up when the cars pass by, up onto the sidewalk. this has been an ongoing issue. now, some water customers are going to lose service when they finally do shut these valves down. apparently they're having to shut down a lot of the valves. i don't know how many people will be affected yet. they're not going to know that number until they actually get the system shut down and th

no one was hurt, not in rockville or potomac, where a chicken choop caught fire. firefighters say some chickens died. the fire department has not said how the fire started. another student has come forward saying he was a victim of sexual abuse at judge sylvania woods elementary school. parents packed the school last night wanting an explanation of how 22-year-old deonte carraway could abuse at least a dozen victims and go undetected. some of the abuse allegedly took place on school property. >> unfortunately the more we keep looking, the more we keep finding. and the broader the whole matter seems to be getting. >> the mother of an 11-year-old victim has also filed a new civil lawsuit. meanwhile leaders in prince georges county schools are taking action to try to prevent future abuse. the district put together a task force to review its current policies. next week, pri

most recently he held that post but says he's leaving the job now. he brought the new rail cars to the system and headed up major infrastructure projects. there have also been problems, though. metro's assistant gm of transit infrastructure is going to be replace him. this morning the resignation is official for dr. juliette sausey. she turned in a four-page resignation letter on tuesday. in it she says people in the district are dying needlessly in cases that are not making news. she told news4 there is a lack of cooperation when it comes to improving ems service. right now, flower shops in our area are doing big business. after the break, the steps being taken to keep those deliveries on time.

the british government is suing disney this morning over "star wars." you might remember when actor harrison ford broke his leg during production of the film. england's health and safety executive says the force awakens production company broke the law because it didn't do enough to keep ford from getting hurt. there's a hearing scheduled for may. after he was injured, ford said it was just an accident. valentine's day is here in just a couple of days. that of course means the rush is on to fill all of those valentine's requests. inside a bethesda florist, a team is tackling one bouquet after another. they have brought on dozens of extra temporary workers just for the holiday. 20 drivers are on the road starting today to make all of those deliveries. >> not everybody has a loved one, but they haveeb

today after a scary situation at dinner time inside an ohio restaurant. a man with a machete attacking at random. investigators are trying to figure out if this could be a case of home-ground extremism. here is nbc's pete williams. >> reporter: frightening moments for diners at a columbus, ohio restaurant on thursday, when a man wielding a machete began randomly attacking customers. >> we've got at least four injured, if you could send four medics. >> reporter: police say the man walked boo tinto the nazareth restaurant, had a conversation with an employee, then came back a half hour later. police say he approached a couple sitting at a booth just inside. >> this was a brutal attack. he walks to people who are just there having dinner and starts attacking them. some of the patrons there started throwing chairs at him, just trying to get him out of there. >> reporter: after the attack, the man drove away
