>> we're going to give you an update on school closings. but, first, we want to start with storm chief 4 chief meteorologist. >> that's right, erica. just another sunday. so i thought come in again. we've had this the last couple of sundays. we've had a lot of storms lately and it looks like we're going to get another one. the snow coming in all across the area. you can see exactly where the snow is falling. riegtsd now, starting to come down inside the beltway. we have just seen some reports out towards fairfax. you can see what's going on back

towards prince george's county. all reporting snow right now. the snow making its way in from the west. we're going to pick up a good one to two inches just over the next couple of hours. we're going to see a big change as far as the weather is concerned. look at the numbers, everything that falls tonight will stick. the roads will become very slick very quickly. we have a winter weather advisory to the west. snow moving in right now. wintery mix through tomorrow afternoon. some locations could pick up some ice. that's going to be another problem for amelia outside right now. we're starting to see that snow make its way in even through our area. >> i just walked outside. flurries just starting to fly out here. so the snow is moving in. there's a bit of a breeze. and it is cold. temperatures right now generally in the teens and 20s. and you can certainly feel that outside here. here's the latest on road conditions. i just checked the hig

they're all in the teens and 20s. as snowfalls, it will immediately start to stick. so as we head to max 1, we're talking about snow covered roads tomorrow morning. snow and ice covered roads tomorrow afternoon and then on tuesday morning, doug, we'll still have a concern for some bridges and overpasses because it is so cold. here's our up dated snowfall map: it's not just the snow, it's the ice that's going to follow. >> that's really why we have that winter storm warning out towards the west. the ice could be a bigger problem in some areas. we're going to talk much more about that. we'll have that for you in just a few minutes. gh our team coverage continues right now in northeast d.c. crews are getting ready to deal with this latest blast of winter weather. a live look at how they are preparing. darcy. >> you kind of feel like saying here we go again.

minutes, we started to see some snow flakes falling here in northeast washington. and we are live at a salt dome. the mayor has called for a full deployment starting in this hour. people are beginning to show up here. if you take a look behind me, the dome is full of sault. they're going to need it because of the expectation of this to be an ice event. road temperatures are going to be key. we checked in with transportation officials in month gom ri and prinsz george's county, as well. they are planning to deploy tonight. this winter weather is happening on a holiday, president's day, when many people have to work so they don't have to go this. but not everyone is so lucky.

in the air. crews had to help them rappel to the ground. faulty brakes, not the cold weather, caused that problem. icy conditions and poor visibility caused this 60 car pile up this afternoon in indiana. 12 people went to the hospital, but the good news here is that they are all expected to be okay. now, over in waterloo, iowa, wind and snow is the problem. temperature there is expected to dip below freezing the other night. back here in our area, a news 4 viewer watched the coverage and felt compelled to help a family who had lost everything. we interviewed him and his family shortly after the fire in january. well, the story moved barbara ferris to help. she contacted people in her glover park community and friends. and together, they raised money, donated clothing and school

supplies, helping the palma family start over. ms. barbara came just like an angel. god sent her to us. we are really grateful to her. there's so many people that come to us and help us. >> the red cross helped about a hundred people displaced during that fire. as for the palma family, a go-fund me page has been set up. you can open the nbc washington app for ways to help. just search working for you in quotations. >> this valentine's day, americans spoiled their sweetties with flower, jewelry or a night out. americans will spend nearly $150 on this valentine's day. that's slightly higher than last year. nationwide, we're talking about $2 billion spent on flowers alone.

hello, doug. boy, you know how to make an entrance. >> storm chief 4 meteorologist joining us here. >> for the third sunday out of four. we've been talking about different snow events coming on here. we had the blizzard and this time we have another little system coming in. >> you could say that again, right? >> and most of the time, we get a lot of snow during this time of year, president's day. here's the radar currently. most of this doesn't hit the ground. but this is completely different. everything that you see here is hitting the ground right now. snowing in downtown, snowing in fair fax, snowing in waldorf, warrington, leesburg. quantico already has a pretty

covering everything. this is really just one wave of snow. again, this is just part one of this storm. we'll see another part develop tomorrow and then the next part is way back to the west. that's what's going to bring in some very warm air. that's why we're going from snow to ice over to rain. we'll talk about that in a second. this is why everything is going to stick very quickly. temperatures well below freezing and we have been for the last couple of days. it has been frigid. notice by 1:00, it's snowing everywhere. still snowing in some areas, especially down towards the south. but by 8:30, it comes right back in. that's when we'll start to see some heavier snow. we really start to get in on

the morning rush, if there is one, is going to be quite problem le matic. then we see the warmer air come in. notice the rain snow line around 3:00. we start to get that mixing, that ice, that rain coming on in. this is when things could get really tricky tomorrow afternoon. we've been tracking the timing of when the snow changes to ice. and, amelia, the ice could be a big factor here during the afternoon tomorrow. >> yeah, exactly, doug. so the iciest time period will be during the early afternoon hours from about 1 mm. before we get to that, you're waking up to snow-covered roads. still worried about some slick spots tuesday morning, especially bridges and overpasses. it has been so cold these last few days, those bridges and overpasses really hold only to that cold air. here's your planner for tomorrow. t

still below freezing. by 7:00, we're tracking that wintry mix and a temperature of 32. i'll shee you temps in a moment. but i think delays are still likely. recess probably indoors as the kids have school. we'll be tracking rain, maybe everyone heavy at that point. now, here's right around midnight 1:00 a.m., you can see just about everybody finally above freezing. look at the temperature for the morning rush. right around 6:15. temperatures at that point in the low 40s. doug, after this 178, some pretty quiet weather to look forward to. >> finally. we need it in the weather center. i'm sure you need it at home, too. we could pick up a quick inch of rain. 49 degrees on wednesday, maybe an isolated shower early. and then take a look at this.
