upward, but still many spots at or below the freezing mark already in the 40s to near 50 in southern maryland. here is the way the next 24 hours will look. 7:00 a.m. this morning, temperatures near freezing with risk of freezing rain here this morning through about 7:00 or 8:00. by tonight dry, temperatures in the mid and upper 40s and dry temperatures back down near 33 as you get your wednesday started. we'll time out the rain in ten minutes. so right now just wanted to show you a live picture here in northwest washington. so hk arthur boulevard at arizona avenue, a lot of streets look like this this morning. and let me tell you, they are vehicle and slippery. you will have to be careful. my entire trip in was just kind of a mess here this morning. northbound fairfax county parkway before braddock, still have the crash blocking the lane. outer loop, two crashes 95 south beforend

parking lot where the cars are covered in ice and the parking lot itself is just a sheet of ice. and we are just creeping along here as the ice covered surfaces even though air temperatures are above freezing are still frozen solid. and you have to wrach your footing and just be extremely careful. especially will this any untreated surface. most of the sidewalks and side treats and side roads that we have seen here in northern virginia are still completely ice covered on this i'm calling it #treacherous tuesday morning. the main roads are wet, the ones that have been salted are wret, and passable. but it's the side streets, sidewalks, side roads, watch out this morning. back to you. coming up on 6 after the hour. and a woman is dead after crashing in to a backhoe in loudoun county. we're working to see if ice was a factor in the crash. it h

route 7 near the intersection with route 9. we're told 7 was plowed and cleared of snow at the time of the crash, but there were icy spots. we're working for on you this weather alert day. the ice causing trouble for folks in prince george's county, too. derrick ward is in chillum for us and giving us a good look at what things are look out there. >> reporter: good morning. as tom was saying, it's really more treacherous on the sidewalk than it is once you get to the street. some side streets are a bit dicey. and you see some wet spots now. a lot of the roads have been treated, so times that is liquid or at least slush, but it's best to assume that it's ice. take a look at what happens when folks are coming out of their building. a gentleman just came out of the building behind me and he about fell flat because there is ice right at the door. it doesn't necessarily look bad. and if you come back to us live here, take a look, a lot of people are actually

more school delays are rolling in. you can add d.c. public schools and frederick county maryland public schools to the list of delays. they are now two hours delayed opening for frederick county maryland and d.c. public schools on this weather alert day. this is just one of the reasons you see here the roads especially bad this morning. sidewalks are pretty bad, too, thanks to yesterday's snow, freezing rain and then the overnight freezing temperatures. we want to turn to chuck bell now for a look at how all of this is impacting what is sure to be a smooth

>> oh, yeah, smooth in the sense of frictionless commute. everything has been glazed over with a little coat of freezing rain and freezing drizzle. temperatures are still at or below freezing for most areas out to the west of d.c. prince george's county southbound above freezing right now. and here is where the radar shows dry conditions in the immediate metro area, but pockets of freezing rain now from luray through page, up into the panhandle of west virginia. use extreme caution. here is timing out what will happen later today. by 7:00 this morning, areas of heavy rain, good news. it's above breezing aloft and the raindrops will actually bring the warmer air down with them and that will bring heavy rain into the area by about 9:00 or 10:00 this morning. here is 9:00 a.m. future weather, heavy rain pushing right into the heart of the metro, it will be a very rainy and slow day. temperatures later today will generally be in the upper 40s and low 50s, but the worst o

it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. take a look at radar and you can see pretty clearly why. rain, freezing rain continuing to drench parts of our region. and that is making for a slick situation on the roads. even about it just looks like the pavement is wet, there could be black ice there. chuck bell and melissa mollett are tracking the latest conditions this morning. and we have reporters all across the area this morning keeping an eye on this icy and dicey conditions on the roadways. tom kierein has taken the 4 x 4 out. i drove in from receston and no doubt had to drive extra

lot of a shopping center and it is like an ice skating rink here. we have a complete ice covered parking lot across this huge shopping center and it is absolutely ice covered. it really is like an ice skating rink. we are creeping along here in the storm team 4 x 4. when you hit the brakes, you just slide. you cannot turn sharply. walking is just impossible. you will fall down, break a bone or hit your head trying to walk on this kind of ice. now, we came down on route 7 and route 7 was just wet. they had salted that. we're now turning on to the access road to the shopping center and it is sort of slushy and a little bit wet. we're tracking this treacherous tuesday morning in the storm team 4 x 4. and the good news this morning is that temperatures will rise throughout the day and the snow will get washed away.

the melting. so the runoff will make river levels rise and that could be a problem in places like georgetown's waterfront. >> another problem you will notice today icy sidewalks. you can see in the video here, this could create a big problem for people trying to walk to metro station or bus stop this morning. outside on your own little walkway there, this could be a big problem. a lot of sidewalks that didn't get cleared of the snow yesterday are now sheets of ice from what i saw this morning even the places that were cleared of snow are still sheets of ice. most of us encountered the icy sidewalks as we headed in to work this morning. you got to be careful out there. now, due to the very icy sidewalks, we're letting you know about the best deicers our consumer team did some digging. and if you're in a time crunch and you're looking for a fast acting melter, calcium chloride is your best bet for

sheets of ice early. heavy rain moving in after about 8:00 this morning and dry and breezy after about 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. so it will be like three days in one, we'll start with winter, temperatures at or below freezing from washington north and westbound, well above freezing now in southern maryland. you saw it on radar and here it is again. these areas of pink, that is pockets of freezing rain near winchester and martinsburg here early this morning. not much falling out tof the sk right now. likely to come this just as rain as temperatures will be well above freezing and look at the heavy rain and pockets of heavy thunderstorms now down just west of the raleigh area. that whole pinch of moisture is coming towards us. it will be arriving here during the course of the morning then. so here is future weather. 7:00 a.m., moderate rain in the shenandoah valley. by 8:00, 9:00 this morning, those pockets of moderate rain moving into the metro area here. if you can delay travel until after about 9:00, 10:00 this morning, temperes

overseas. the department of health and human services requested today's workshop. today there will be a hearing on the tragic sinking of the el faro cargo ship. the ship sank in the middle of hurricane joaquin last year. the coast guard is expected to focus on the events that led up to the sinking and previous voyages the el faro took. all 33 people on board el faro died. clive bundy is set to appear in court. bundy will answer charges for an armed confrontation that happened back in 2014. that incident forced federal officials to release cattle near his ranch in nevada. his son and i honermed a sit-in same issue. and the pontiff has been to several

avenue, a crash. 95 at dale city has finally cleared. we'll head west of there in our storm team 4 x 4. tom kierein keeping an eye on road conditions in virginia. >> reporter: right now we're in chantilly tracking some really heavy rain. you can see it on the nbc washington app. that is about to move in later this morning. but right now, this is the parking lot at the franklin middle school here near chantilly. and it is more like a hockey rink than a parking lot. it is completely ice covered. good thing these coschool buses won't have to get out on the roads because many parking lots, side streets, sidewalks, your front steps are completely covered with ice. even though the air temperatures are getting above freezing here in northern

pavement temperatures are still below freezing. so the ice is not going anywhere. back to you. well, it is a pretty slippery situation in prince george's county this morning. crews worked late in will to the evening to treat the freezing roads, but those that had already ice over are taking longer to melt. as we've been telling you all morning, it's the sidewalks that are still a problem for many. p. >> i'd wasidewalks are ridiculo. i've seen a lot of people sliding. >> the county snow command center monitors which roads that they would treat, but home and business owners are required to clear their own sidewalks. >> a woman in montgomery county recovering this morning after a sledding accident. police were called to columbia country club yesterday evening

sledding on the gulf course. she is expected to be okay. right now a 94-year-old woman is recovering after being pulled from the where he issage of her house when a tornado touched down in florida. it did damage to several homes and just destroyed hers. rescue workers used a chain saw and some dug through the debris with their bayre hands to find her. this is all part of the same storm system we're dealing with. in north carolina, it caused slick conditions on the roads there. our affiliate in charlotte says ice that lingered on a bridge caused a crash after crash. if you have to go outside, go slowly and really be careful out there.

let's take another look at weather. >> chuck bell, in the weather center. >> lots of ice coming down on radar. you can see all the pockets of pink there. northern fauquier county, page, shenandoah counties. be on the lookout first thing thosh as the pockets of freezing rain are slow to end. there is warmer air aloft and those raindrops are bringing it down with them, but still travel troubles major issues early this morning on the roads. they look wet, but i promise you, there is a lot more ice than water out there this morning. between 8:00 and 2:00, temperatures will go above freezing. heavy rain coming our way. so moderate impact even through the remainder of the morning and early this afternoon. rapid melt and quick inch of rain could lead to flooding issues, as well. there is a flood watch for the entire area until 11:00 tonight. right now temperatures are just now getting up close to the freezing mark
