of flying debris. high winds knocked down power lines leaving 100,000 people without electricity. that poor woman right there caught up in it. at the height, wind gusts were up to 60 miles per hour. three people are seriously hurt after a sight-seeing helicopter crashed in hawaii's pearl harbor. there were problems moments before the chopper went down. a 15-year-old boy was critically hurt in that crash. the two other people remain in serious condition. divers hit the water to float the chopper back up to the surface yesterday. the ntsb is looking to find out what caused the chopper to go down. a big weekend for nascar as drivers gear up for the daytona 500. you have to check this out. as drivers took the white flag for the final lap in the camping world truck series, one car hit the outside wall and flew

developing right now in flint, michigan, federal regulators say state and federal regulate aren't doing enough there. flint doesn't have enough qualified personnel to ensure that the city's system meets requirements for led pollution. a quality spokesperson said the state received the letter and is reviewing it. >> well, we may never know if a man accused of killing a d.c. family and their housekeeper acted alone. wint pleaded guilty to 20 charges. 12 counts of first degree murder included. the criminal defense attorney tone

likely to go to trial and because wint cannot be sentenced to death, he has no in sentive to give up any accomplices he may have had. if he is convicted on one murder charge, he will spend the rest of his life in prison. frank trullio shot and killed a guest at a holiday party back in december. he said he was defending his family when he shot perez. he was a guest at the holiday party. perez got drunk and charged the host, threatening to kill him and his wife and their children. he said he knew he was a martial arts expert and posed a threat to his family. >> it was just beyond belief to have somebody in your home yelling at the top of their lungs they are going to kill you. and you are standing next to my son's bedroom door. my wife behind me trying to call the police. >> he was arrested for murder and jailed until a judge allowed him to be releasn

d.c. travel and adventure show is rolling into our area this weekend. nbc 4 is a proud partner. the event showcases hundreds of worldwide destinations from india to the caribbean to local hot spots. the show runs through sunday at the washington convention center. well, it's been almost a month since the big blizzard. maryland government is asking for help to pay for the damage. governor larry hogan asked president obama yesterday to issue a disaster declaration. that would free up federal funding to pay state and local agencies that responded to the storm. maryland hasn't said how much the storm costs the state. a crowd funding campaign is under way if fairfax to help those struggling with their heating bills. dozens of families kept it through this initiative. our daily bread is trying to raise $16,000 by the end of the month. it would help 80 families who

he was carried into the great hall of the supreme court. >> so many people came to the supreme court yesterday to pay tribute as he lay in repose in the great hall. the court had to actually stay open for extra time. more than 6,000 people filed past his casket yesterday. in addition to president and mrs. obama, other judges from washington and around the country. nearly 100 of his former law clerks. i think that reflects the else seem in which he was held. of course at today's funeral that's not what we are going to hear about. this is a religious service. while there will be a homily, which is somewhat unusual, the emphasis will be on the other part of justice scalia, his powerful religious faith. he will be celebrated by his son

a town you hall meeting following a gas explosion this month. derrick, this is something that caused huge concern out that way. >> well, indeed, it has. this all stems back to an incident that happened on february 7th. now, that's what people have reported the snell of gas in the neighborhood. not only the house but outside the house. the fire department came. they started evacuating people. one levels were so high they took the family out. they literally had gotten across the street when the explosion happened in that house. firefighters still inside said it was like an earthquake. it felt like the house had been lifted from the ground. they did testing and found a lot of gas leaks in that neighborhood. the interesting thing is the house didn't even have gas service. so they have done some work in the approximate area now. the state senator will come here today to put questions to washington gas about what they do

were released yesterday. the u.s. state department said 64 documents were upgraded to confidential. but none of the information was classified at the time the e-mails were sent. none of the documents released were considered secret or top secret level. they plan to finish making those e-mails public february 29th. >> the battle between the fbi and apple is heating up. the obama administration says it would allow apple to retain possession of and later destroy specialized hacking software. the tech giant has been ordered to design the hacking software to help the fbi get into an encrypted iphone. it was used by the gunman in december's mass shootings in san bernardino, california. donald trump took the fight to the campaign trail and called on americans to boycott apple they they comply with the court order. a man had a brush with death when he was nearly hit by a train in australia. video shows the man trying to actually cross the tracks at a train station there.

well, are you looking for a way to preserve some of the old family videos or photos? a brand-new lab devoted to just that is opening up in the district. it is opening up at martin luther king jr. library. a hearing in annapolis about the controversial end on of life act was well supported. it lasted self hours. so many people wanted to give their opinion. the proposed law would allow terminally ill residents to end their lives on their own terms with drugs prescribed by a doctor. dr. kevin donovan opposes it. he said it is a slippery slope and questions whether it should be offered to children. >> there is really no way to keep the
