news4 at 6:00 starts now. >> right now at 6:00, in front of an apartment looking for a new car, outside a restaurant six people shot and killed in seemingly random attacks and the suspected triggerman is an uber driver. this happened over the course of several hours in kalamazoo, michigan, last night. police say the driver has no criminal background and police are still trying to figure out why this all happened. >> the first shots were fired just before 6:00 saturday night in the parking lot of an apartment complex. the gunman shot a mother who was with her three children. she's in serious condition. about four hours later and 15 miles away, shots were fired at a car dealership. 18-year-old tyler smith and his father killed. >> looks like we have somebody just driving around finding

>> reporter: 15 minutes later more shots. this time at a popular restaurant. >> priority 2. 5581 south 9th street. 5581 south 9th street at the cracker barrel. shots fired. >> reporter: five more victims, four more dead. a 14-year-old girl reported to be killed survived. rushed into surgery after she squeezed her mother's hand. she's in critical condition. in all, the shooter had eight victims, six were killed. about seven hours after the first shots were fired, police arrested 45-year-old jason dalton without incident. authorities found a gun and other evidence inside his car. dalton is an uber driver who authorities say has ties to the community. his neighbors say he was a normal working family guy. >> would have never suspected anything like that. >> reporter: what connects the alleged gunman, the locations, and the victims? police say nothing. >> the randomness of this is hard to deal with and that's one of the most frightening things about it. >> reporter: authorities h

try to find out why one man may have taken so many lives. dan sheneman, nbc news. we are learning new details tonight about that tragedy. an indianapolis man visiting kalamazoo said he came face-to-face with jason dalton minutes before he was arrested and he has the receipt to prove it. he told our sister station that his family piled into the suspect's car just after midnight. derrick jokingly asked the driver if he was the shooter. dalton said no. derrick said dalton seemed calm and dropped derrick and his family off without incident. less than 20 minutes later police arrested dalton. for more information on that shooting spree, open the nbc washington app and search kalamazoo. a woman sexually assaulted in her own northern virginia home, and now the search is on for her attacker. an intruder broke into her home while she slept

morning. as news4's derrick word reports, neighbors are on edge after this disturbing crime. >> reporter: people who live in the 8400 block of blankenship street in alexandria in the woodlawn apartments knew something was wrong early saturday morning. >> police cars were out here and other cars. >> yesterday i saw the police were there but i don't know what happened. >> reporter: surprised and deeply troubled, that's reaction we're getting from people when they learn exactly what that police presence was all about. there had been a burglary and sexual assault around 3:00 a.m. saturday. >> never, never i saw something about like that. >> reporter: police say a 51-year-old woman awoke to find an intruder inside her apartment. they say he threatened the woman before the assault and thread afterward. neighbors try to look out for each other here. >> the lady is by herself down here and i worry about her. >> reporter: the victim was hospitalized for what police describe as an nonlife threatening injury. her attacker has yet to be caught. it sent a chill through a

considered safe. >> you got to be careful here. >> you never know. >> reporter: in alexandria, derrick ward, news4. donald trump is cementing his status as the gop front-runner with strong performances among key demographic groups in the republican party. he appeared on "meet the press" this morning to discuss last night's win. exit polls show trump did well with self-described evangelical conservatives in south carolina. that helped him get another landslide victory and sweep all 50 delegates. trump's win was a major blow to senator ted cruz who invested heavily in his pursuit of religious conservatives. cruz finished in third place behind senator marco rubio. for hillary clinton, nonwhite voters pushed her over the top in nevada. the former secretary of state is now in prime position to do well when virginia voters join voters in many other states for super tuesday on march 1st. u

10:00 a.m. a mix of sun and clouds. lots of rain in the forecast this week. i'll have the latest timing coming up. >> thank you. a troubling set of armed robberies in the district. a man was robbed in the middle of the afternoon today on florida avenue in northeast. three men surrounded him, one of them put a gun to his head demanding cash. he told police the men rifled through his pockets, took his wallet and ran off to a waiting getaway car. last wednesday the same thing happened about 15 minutes away on new york avenue in northwest. in that case four men pulled a gun on somebody, took the man's bag along with some cash. d.c. police were able to make two arrests in that robbery. a serious accident shut down a major road in bethesda this afternoon. montgomery county police say three cars collided at the intersection of goldsboro road and massachusetts avenue. goldsboro was shut down for quite some time while crews cleared the scene. an ambulance had to take one

insulator problem. fire crews were called after the insulator started sfas eed spar. metro tells us there was never any smoke or fire emergency but they did have to shut down bethesda station for 45 minutes. again, everything back to normal tonight. church services interrunted in riverdale park today after a carbon monoxide leak. 60 people were attending services inside the refreshing spring church of god when they started feeling sick. emts had to rush six people to the hospital. they were all expected to be okay. firefighters found high levels of carbon monoxide inside the church. they shut down the hvac system. washington gas also responded to the scene. a soggy morning on the national mall. there's some rain showers today, of course, that you saw, but we are expecting a lot more for the workweek. amelia is com
