woman's simple idea that is a game changer when it comes to sending flowers. >> nbc has the story. >> reporter: when a bouquet of flowers shows up at your door, you usually wonder who they're from. christina wonders where they're from. >> i was eating at the farm to table restaurants where it was basically in portlandia fashion. they'd tell me the name of the chicken i was eating. they had imported carnations on the tables. >> reporter: that's how her now multi-million dollar company, farm girl flowers, got its start. >> i was the dork that, every weekend, was at home writing business plans. >> reporter: she has no formal training in floral design, and no business degree. >> i started researching. i found an industry that was huge but had little innovation in it in recent years. >> reporter: most flower companies, she found, use imported stems. she said no to flowers ships from thousands of miles away. >> the same

shouldn't expect to eat a nice, ripe peach in december, we shouldn't expect to get peonys in december either, right? >> we're celebrating the flower while it's in season. our model is, instead of having hundreds of options, we have one daily arrangements. 100% american-grown flowers. >> reporter: growing up in a farm in indiana, she knows first-hand the importance of seasons and supporting local farmers. >> there used to be 150 rose growers and now there are 5 commercial sized ones in the united states. i didn't want it to get to the point where you can't buy a domestic grown flower. >> reporter: she tried to get investors to back her farm to vase idea, but ended up with a string of rejections. >> a couple female investors said i should take my husband in with me to pitch, being a solo female founder is difficult. >> reporter: she bootstrapped the startup herself. >> i would get up at 3:30 in the morning and come to the flower mart, load my car with flowers. i'd have to take several trips back and forth.

salt and pepper, oil. it's like a five-minute meal. >> crowd sausage. you can use any protein. my mom uses shrimp and i sometimes use chicken. whatever you have in the pantry -- or the fridge, not the pantry. you want to refrigerate your meat. >> little bit of oil. >> you can get over here and stir. >> yup. >> basically, we want to make sure it's not pink. as soon as the sausage starts to cook, we'll add the crushed tomatoes. you can buy tomatoes with oregano and garlic if you want. you can let it simmer 5 to 10 minutes. then we'll add the tapers. they add salt, hint of lemon, a lot of flavor for a little thing. >> your sauce is the crushed tomatoes. >> basically. with crushed tomatoes in a can, you can
