the suspected gunman ronald hamilton killed his wife before opening fire on several officers responding to a domestic violence call. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey begins our team coverage at police headquarters where the memorial to officer guindon is growing. julie? >> reporter: erika, you can see that memorial right behind me now. it's had a steady stream of visitors. alongside the american flag a marine corps flag because ashley guindon once served as a reserve i was. her mother is on her way from her new england home to northern virginia. at a time when her family should have been celebrating her late he is achievement, they are mourning this very great loss. symbols of deep sadness around police headquarters. officers draping a patrol car in black bunting. dozens of residents coming to pay respects at this memorial. >> this is a sad day for everybody in this room. it's a sad day for law

guindon killed on her first shift as a rookie officer. this photo was taken as she was sworn in on friday. she'd interned at the department in 2011 as she earned a master's degree in forensic science. chief steve hudson said she trained as an officer last year but left for personal reasons only to return and be hired a few weeks ago. >> she clearly had a passion to serve others in a way that went beyond herself. >> reporter: guindon was with her training officer when both were shot. two guns were found at the shooting scene. it's believed ronald hamilton used a pistol to allegedly kill his wife, then turned an assault-style rifl on guindon and david mckeown and jesse hempen. it's likely the death penalty will be sought. >> at this juncture is looks it's likely we will seek the death penalty. >> reporter: outside headquarters all day long people came to add flowers, cards, and pictures. some stopping to

>> i'm a citizen. i'm an american. and i just wanted to honor this lady who was killed. guarding us all, serving us all. >> i would just like to appreciate what she did for us. >> reporter: and the chief offering both condolences to two families and thanks to the law enforcement community for support like this escort last night as hundreds of officers paid tribute when guindon's body was taken to the medical examiner's office. very moving scene outside the hospital last night. now, this tragedy marks the fourth time there's been a line of duty death in this department, the second involving a shooting. about an hour from now police officers in the community will come together for a vigil. it starts at 7:00 at the mccourt building in woodbridge. back to you in the studio. >> julie carey, thank you so much. fallen officer ashley guindon

aeronautical university. then earned a masters from g.w. she was a marine reservist. it's not the first time her family faced tragedy. their local paper reports guindon's father took his own life after returning from military service in iraq. crystal hamilton was killed last night during the domestic-related shooting. people in her community are sharing what they knew about her and the person police say took her life. news4's derrick ward continues our team coverage tonight. he joins us from the scene in woodbridge. derrick? >> reporter: you know, this street ends in a cul-de-sac but there's been a lot of traffic here today. some people just curious and some wanting to add to the memorial that is growing here at the site. and, you know, this is a diverse community. people play together, they get along, the kids play together in different yards. they got it right, which makes it so hard to fathom just what went wrong here

lashmere court, an idyllic neighborhood. >> sometimes we have a little cul-de-sac get-togethers and we bring our grills out. >> ronald hamilton, career army, stationed at the pentagon, an ideal neighbor. >> just a good dude. like i said, a gentle giant. >> reporter: gunfire and carnage, an unimaginable scene. >> i said what is that noise? he said it sounds like fireworks. i said no, that don't sound like no fireworks. >> reporter: the neighbor crystal hamilton made the 911 call bringing police to her home. she was dead by the time she arrived. shot by her husband ronald hamilton. her sister wendy showed up at the scene briefly and amid their loss they had words of thanks and condolence for the officers involved. >> most pompt limportantly the that sacrificed her life for my sister and my nephew. i thank you and god bless your family and your friends. >> reporter: investigators say ronald hamilton opened fire on police as they arrived. neighbor zach

a wounded prince william police officer lay in his neighbor's driveway. jeev >> he was holding his leg. >> he saw another officer ashley guindon. >> i saw the lady cop laying next to him. i don't know how she got there. >> reporter: and then he saw his young neighbor, the alleged gunman's son running from the house and the look on his face was indescribable. >> it broke my heart. i didn't see his mom come out. >> reporter: police have identified the other two wounded officers, officer david mckeown and officer jesse hempen, both expected to recover from their wounds. we are told that the suspect used a .45 caliber handgun. the officers shot with a rifle. more details on that will be revealed i'm sure tomorrow when he makes his initial court appearance. we are live in woodbridge, derrick ward, news4. with a long gun. >> if somebody can pull a car down by the garage, i know he

her life. an 18-year-old walt whitman high school student was killed. his younger sister also a student at the school is in critical condition. sf news4's darcy spencer is in bethesda. >> reporter: the crash scene can only be described as horrific and it claimed the lives of two bethesda parents and their teenage son. their teenage daughter was the sole survivor. >> it was just really tragic what happened last night. it definitely hit our community really hard. >> reporter: the victims have been identified as michael buarque de macedo who was driving and his wife alessandra, their son, 18-year-old thomas also died. he was a senior at whitman high school. their daughter, helena buarque de macedo was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. she's a sophomore at whitman. classmates set up a memorial at the crash site. >> i want

remember tommy and his family and especially keep helena in their prayers. >> reporter: the family was headed to the school for a play. the crash happened just before 7:00 p.m. they were turning left on river road to pyle road when they collided a car. that 20-year-old driver is expected to be okay. >> this is a bad intersection. >> parents tell us they have been pushing the highway traffic administration to install a traffic light but it was rejected because it didn't meet the requirements. >> it does take incidents, sometimes serious injuries and death for something to be done. otherwise it's not considered a problem. >> reporter: a candlelight vigil is going to be held at whitman high school at 7:00 this evening, and then grief counselors will be available at the high school tomorrow to help students deal with this lots. bethesda, darcy spencer, news4. >

lost power for hours this morning because of a small fire at a substation in prince george's county. that fire happened at around 5:00 a.m. knocking out power to 7,000 customers in upper marlboro and kettering. pepco restored power to everybody by 10:30. they say a breaker at their oak grove facility caused that fire. we've got new details about that water main break that we brought to you as breaking news yesterday. well, the water is still flowing on 38th and hamilton streets in hyattsville, and now they have to bring in a contractor from new jersey to help them fix the problem. wssc says the contractor will do a special proceed you're to tap the line. they cannot shut down the main pipe. apparently the infrastructure is so old that crews cannot find the connection. some people in the area don't have water, so crews have been passing out bottled water. and now your storm team4 forecast. >> well, you may have needed

today if you were headed out for a jog. oh, boy, it was beautiful. some temperatures made it up to around 70 degrees. this is a look at our tower camera. it's just a gorgeous night. clear skies. we were hard pressed to find a cloud in the sky. it was just beautiful and we're going to be mild for the next few days. we're going to be in the 60s as we go at least through tuesday. now, we do have some rain on wednesday. that looks to be the transition day and then you may have heard a little bit of snow for friday. still some questions with that so we'll continue to watch that. right now i got to tell you, it looks really light if we do see anything but it looks like we're going to cool down as we head to the end of the next week. don't get used to the 60 degree temperatures. if you're headed out this evening looking good as temperatures fall into the 40s overnight. we have a little bit of a breeze out there but it's coming from the southwest so all in all not bad. that was responsible for helping to bump up our temperatures. areas along the water a little cooler. annapolis at 49.

patuxent river at 52 but everybody else made it well into the 60s today. so if you are headed out this evening, it's going to be clear, maybe a little bit of a wind, but 60s and 50s. maybe a good time to go ahead and hang out outside. maybe eat some dinner on the patio. all right. we've got high pressure in charge, so clouds are clear all the way down to florida. this is our next frontal system that will come through early tomorrow morning. could bring us a few sprinkles. temperatures are going to be in the 40s tonight. again, you wake up tomorrow morning really not that bad. we'll still have a few clouds in place as that frontal system makes its way through and again i really don't think it's going to create too many problems. a few isolated sprinkles, maybe a light passing shower early tomorrow morning, and that will be between i would say everything will wrap up by 10:00 a.m. if we do see anything. then we'll start to see clouds decrease. temperatures once again in the 60s for tomorrow. 5:15, here comes that weak front. again, it doesn't really show much on here. i'm keeping the chance in but we clear out really nicely

we are looking good. we continue into tuesday looking good as well. wednesday will be again our next transition day when we could have some showers and could have some thunderstorms in the forecast. we'll watch that. again, the rain intensity for tomorrow, you're just going to need a purse-size umbrella. just a small one. and your bus stop forecast again, temperatures will be nearing 50 degrees by the time we get into 8:00 or 9:00, and then by the time we head into the afternoon, temperatures are going to be right around 60, so again not looking too bad. what to wear to work? we're looking at maybe a snowfall umbrella, light jakt, and sunglasses. >> than, lauryn. still ahead, john wall steals the show against the top team in the east.
