blue and gray and beige and brown uniforms. so many first responders came to pay tribute to ashley guindon. it took nearly an hour to clear the church after the service. then they staged a final salute to this fallen young officer, also once a marine reservist. thousands of first responders coming together to pay tribute to ashley guindon. the newly sworn in prince william county officer was shot and killed on her first shift saturday night. guindon's mother, in from massachusetts, was held in the embrace of two prince william county officers as she entered the chapel, followed by other family members. >> she sought the life of a peace-maker. blessed are the peace makers. >> during the service, ashley was remembered as a loving daughter, a highly intelligent young woman, driven to pursue a career of service. she was a marine reservist before joining the police f

montgomery county lawmakers are calling for action after this weekend's deadly crash on river road. a walt whitman high school senior and his parents were killed. congressman chris van holland and isaiah leggett sent letters to the state highway administration calling for an immediate study of that road. >> one of the primary concerns is that the crash happened at one of the main access points to walt whitman high school. you can see how close the high school is to this intersection of river road and pyle road. there is no light here and the speed limit on river is 45 miles per hour. today we found a montgomery county police officer setting up a speed trap near the intersection. our transportation reporter adam tuss found that neighbors have been complaining about this area for years. meanwhile, a warning tonight following the discovery of skimming devices on atms in some 7-eleven stores in prince

she spoke to a woman who lost hundreds of dollars to this scam. >> i have to tell you after our story aired at 4:00, a man came up here to our location and reported that he was also a victim in this scam. he lost hundreds of dollars, now these scammers are putting the skimming devices on atms, as well as cameras. that are small as an eminem candy. >> it's one of those things that you don't think about. when it happens to you, it is a little disconcerting. >> robin, the victim of an expensive scam. thieves placed this card reader on an atm inside this 7-eleven store in bowie. stole her information and used it to withdraw hundreds of dollars from her account. how much money were they able to get out of your account? >> over 800. and it was shocking when i found out and then i went back and

missing. >> this tiny camera also found on the machine. through this pinhole, the camera photographs victims as they punch in their personal identification numbers. >> the combination of access in your p.i.n. and your data, allows that person to go to an atm machine and withdraw funds as a debit. >> these skimmers and cameras were found on atms at three different 7 e11 stores in bowie. discovered by an atm technician last thursday, federal investigators looking into the possibility this is part of a larger ring. this woman a relative of a news4 employee said she got a call from her bank. >> were you able to get your money back? >> i was. >> police are warning residents to check their accounts and statements for fraud plenty misdrawls. >> i went to withdraw cash so i canay

loved one you lost -- is not the person who wound up in the casket. >> this is an unbelievable story. that is the situation a family in our area is trying to deal with tonight as they cope with the loss of their grandmother. news4's pat collins spoke with them earlier and is live in northwest washington. pat? >> jim, what happened to virginia gray? her family wants to know. you see, she died last month. there was to be a viewing here last friday. but when her grandson and granddaughter showed up at the funeral home and went inside, it was the wrong woman. lunacy is what it is. it's unspeakable. i can't -- this is straight out of a bad script. hollywood script or something. i've never heard of anything like this. >> virginia gray was 83 years

she had a daughter. four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. >> she was sweet, as a grandmother should be. she stayed in church a lot. >> on february 19th, miss gray fell unconscious at her home on dix street northeast. an ambulance took her to the prince george's county hospital where sometime later she died. her grandchildren say they contacted the horton funeral home on kennedy street, to prepare miss gray's body for the viewing and the funeral. they say they bought and brought new clothes to the funeral home for their grandmother. >> miss gray's grandchildren say when they went to the viewing last friday, the woman in the casket had the new clothes on. but the woman in the casket wasn't their grandmother. >> i saw a the body of another female. that wasn't my grandmother. >> what went through your heart when you saw that? >> my heart dropped. ias

in her hotel room in 2008. andrews took the stand again today. >> walk right by the fans, near as close as they are to me and i think my god everyone in this stadium has seen that video. >> during cross-examination, the hotel's lawyers asked andrews if she has done well in her career since the videotape was released. and she replied yes. the hotel says they have nothing to do with the stalker's actions. this trial is expected to wrap up this week. police are trying to figure out who shot a man near montgomery county college. investigators tell us the man in his 20s was shot off-campus somewhere and flagged down a driver along hungerford drive. that driver took the man to the college, where they called police. police say the victim isn't cooperating, he was shot in the leg and is expected to be okay. a fashion statement so to speak in got a passenger into trouble with the tsa at bwi marshall. it's these

. some residents in winchester virginia plan to take the streets again tonight. angry after a man died after being chased by police. they're questioning the officer's version of what happened. >> police say delondre middlefield shot himself as he ran off. meanwhile there's another new development in this case. late this afternoon, we learned that police in petersburg, virginia, had been looking for minfield since september for an alleged armed robbery and assault. jackie benson has our report. >> a memorial set up for a young man who died here sunday night there are a lot of questions and a lot of anger about the circumstances surrounding his death. how are you going to jump a fence and shoot yourself in the back of the head? >> the death sunday afternoon of 20-year-old delondre minfield

police officers have voted no confidence in their police chief after the death of a prince george's county student. the police union representing the officer says chief lance hatcher has allowed old equipment, inadequate training and disputes to weaken the fight against crime on campus. the vote followed the death of 20-year-old gerald williams who was stabbed during a fight near campus last month. police say the driver of that atv involved in a car crash here in montgomery county has died. 26-year-old mark hutchinson died after his atv flipped over. when it collided with a car at sugarland road here in white ferry road. the cause of the accident yesterday is still under investigation tonight. the driver of the car remained on the scene. well, a bit of a surprise when police responded to a call about gunshots in falls church. this was about 4:00 yesterday morning on cherry drive. a neighbor called police saying someone fired shots from inside a vacant h

officers found this man, he had been squatting in the home. his name is michael stride. and while searching the vacant house, they found a six-foot python and several handguns. animal control is taking care of the snake. there are more signs that the purple line is closer to reality in maryland. businesses are closing along part of the route. the rail line would connect part of montgomery county and prince george's county. news4's chris gordon reports on the impact of people living and working along that route. >> it's a landmark, chevy chase shopping center on connecticut avenue just inside the beltway. but the landscape is changing, making way for a large real estate development. it's located near the proposed purple line, the 16-mile-long light rail system linking bethesda in montgomery county to new carrollton in prince george's county. >> i think change

right now on capitol hill, apple's top lawyer is fielding questions from lawmakers about the fbi request. to hack one of the san bernardino shooters' iphones. the fbi wants apple to develop a program to hack it apple says that would create a back door that could break encryption on other devices and set a dangerous precedent. >> hundreds of millions of law abiding citizens trust apple's products with the most intimate details of their daily lives, the only way we know to protect that data is through strong encryption. >> we only use the tools given to us under the law. it's our job simply to tell people there is a problem. everybody should care about it. everybody should want to understand if there are warrant-proof spaces in american life, what does that mean? what are the costs of

how do we think about that? >> it does not directly impact the san bernardino case, a judge in brooklyn has said that the obama administration cannot force apple to help it gain access to a device in another separate case. >> the second most powerful democrat in the house made a big pitch to his colleagues today to bring the new fbi headquarters to maryland. maryland congressman steny hoyer testified before a house subcommittee. the state is offering two sites, landover and green blt. but hoyer says the state does have a preference. >> the state has been focused on green belt. we've got transportation plans for greenbelt. but we think the landover site is also a preferable site over the virginia site. >> the commonwealth has proposed a site in springfield, hoyer hopes the decision will be made by the end of the year. there is growing evidence of a possible link between the zika virus and a condition that can cause temporary paralysis. researchers in france looking at an outbreak

syndrome from a couple of years ago and they found all of the 42 people who had been diagnosed did indeed have zika antibodies, meaning they had been infected with that virus. guillain-barre is a neurological illness, it can cause muscle weakness and even the inability to walk. experts say they need to look at more locations before confirming a connection between those two conditions. a hotly debated virginia bill has taken another step forward. state senate approved a measure to requiring schools to notify parents if their children will be assigned to read a book that includes sexually explicit material. the measure passed with a 22-17 vote. it passed the house unanimously last month. if it's enacted, it would be the first state law forcing schools to notify parents about explicit books. imagine if the only way to save your life is to be frozen

for the thousands of people who are treated for traumas every year, life or death can come down to a matter of minutes. >> but a procedure about to go into clinical trials at major trauma centers in maryland may bring, may buy surgeons some time. doreen gentzler is here with more. >> it's not a new concept, but this is a new application. it's all about cooling the body. really cooling it. when body temperatures hit the 70s, severe hypothermia and death can be next. this procedure proposes to lower the body's temperature even further. by at least 20 degrees. when a person undergoes a severe physical trauma, the body often goes into shock. >> right now trauma patients 0 who have cardiac arrest from bleeding so much that the heart stops have almost no chance of survival. >> r. adams cally shock trauma center at the university of

patients every year and when a patient comes into the shock trauma center, time is critical. >> every minute, even seconds count. our goal is going to be to try to make decision to do this, within about five minutes of the person losing a pulse. >> this is epr, emergency preservation and resuscitation. >> our goal of doing this is to cool particularly the brain, but the rest of the body, too. down to around 50 degrees fahrenheit. for these patients we're talking about, the heart has already stopped. we're trying to buy time. >> for surgeons to at least stop the bleeding. >> dr. samuel tisherman is heading up the epr study at the shock trauma center. epr is not yet in practice. he started thinking about this more than 20 years ago when cooling down the body temperatures of nontrauma patients led him to investigate cooling the body temperatures of critical patients. in epr, the trauma surgeon puts

scanning the area. you can see how dry it is, we've got rain that's now getting into west virginia. here it is at 9:00, hagerstown, down towards loray and charlottesville. it's through in a hurry. we've got sunshine for tomorrow. just a cold, wet and windy. so the weather tomorrow will have a moderate impact on our area because of the change over a 24-hour period of time. cold, windy, you'll need the coat. it will feel like winter tomorrow. we'll see our temperatures drop and hold steady after lunch time. about 45 degrees for a temperature and the wind chills even late in the day, 4:00, 31 to 37. yeah, that's a lot like winter. so the kids are going to need the heavy coat. the scarf, too. heading out the door for tomorrow morning. next change for us, yet again, is what we get late thursday. and that of course going to be the next system coming in, we're right now it looks as though we're going to get rain and snow starting late, at 11

thursday. for us by friday morning, it moves out, maybe light accumulati accumulation. doug has more coming up on news4 at 6:00. new problems for the proposed $7 billion merger between pepco and energy giant exelon. news4's tom sherwood reports mayor muir yul bowser and another key city official are refusing to go along with a compromise deal approved last week. >> a d.c. public service commission last friday approved the pepco/exelon merger. but with conditions. one of those conditions eliminated what would have been a three-year freeze on the electricity rates for residential customers. but today mayor muriel bowser said she couldn't support the deal that took benefits away from low-income rate-payers. bowser followed objections from council member who represents residential rate payers, who said
