virginia's primary results. we'll get to julie ca trump's tight win over marco rubio. >> reporter: it's marco rubio's strong performance in northern virginia that's standing out this morning. we caught up with one of trump's chairmen here in virginia, they're certainly downplaying that performance. >> just in general, i think, honestly, rubio needed to win virginia. he's not going to win virginia, and this could be bad for the rubio campaign. >> reporter: and i also caught up with gop leaders here in virginia. i asked them about rubio's strong showing what exactly does that mean going forward. >> when you compete in virginia, when you have the ground game, when you show up, when you have the phone bank, and the money, good things happen here. >> reporter: and the gop also very proud of the number of voters that turned out, well over 1 million. that breaks the previous gop

confronted her about having to y court documents say that he shot his daughter chloe and her mother several times and left them there. two virginia families may begin to get closure in the murders of their daughters. today we expect jesse matthew jr. to enter a plea in the deaths of hanna morgan and amanda graham. matthew is charged in both cases. serving three life sentences for sex assault in fairfax. prosecutors say all three cases were linked by dna. for the harrington family, the deal isn't about answers, it's about justice. >> justice for morgan rather than finality is instant for finality, as well as culpability that he will admit blame.

the way there but what happened yesterday, those three states that ted cruz picked up, he is still competitive. in fact, he is only about 100 or so delegates behind donald trump right now which means trump will have to look over his shoulder. publicly, he's looking ahead talking about winning florida and focusing on hillary clinton. ted cruz still thinks he has a shot at this. that's why cruz is now asking marco rubio who underperformed yesterday, he did win minnesota but really isn't very close to the front-runners as at all. he's asking rubio and the other two candidates, carson and kasich to get out of the race so he has a chance to beat trump. >> and hillary clinton dominating. >> she's way ahead. interestingly, his strategy

worked, the five states that were not hi knew he couldn't win there after south carolina, he won four of those five states, but in the end, it's just not enough delegates. as you said, she's almost halfway there with just shy of 1,000 delegates this morning, moving forward into florida, hoping to pick up more. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. >> back to the republicans for a second, nbc as you political director chuck todd said we could be headed to a contested gop convention. now, this hasn't happened in a really long time but essentially it happens when none of the candidates have the majority of the delegates before the republican convention. chuck said that donald trump needs to have a very strong two weeks to earn a majority. the next big primary is saturday march 15th when florida, illinois, missouri, north carolina and ohio will vote. before that there are contests this weekend in kentucky, kansas, louisiana, maine and nebraska.

hamilton's husband donald made a call for domestic violence help. police say hamilton also killed guindon and wounded two officers. she was remembered as an amazing mother. >> our friendship, it was just the two of us, missing my other half, when i turn to my left, i don't see her anymore. that's somethi that i didn't get the opportunity to say good-bye. >> family says that they are focusing on making funeral arrangements for crystal and supporting the couple's sons. there is a call for change at a bethesda intersection which was the site of a deadly crash over the weekend. three family members were killed and a fourth seriously injured in that crash at river road and pile road.

now county executives and o to do a traffic study at that area. they sent a letter to the maryland state highway association asking for a dprensive review. thousands have signed a petition asking for a traffic light at that spot. d.c. mayor marion bowser has pulled her porter for a merger. rejected the deal and laid out conditions for pepco and exelon for that approval. the lawyer who represents pepco rate pairs said she will not agree to that term. pepco and exelon has now ten days left to resolve any differences. new details this morning in a story news4 was first to report more than a month after the big snowstorm. many of the private contractors who helped to dig the district out are still waiting for a paycheck.

invest with confidence. this is a sad story that's adding more pain to a family in our area that is coping for a loss. virginia gray died last month after falling unconscious in her home. her family made all the funeral arrangements. when they arrived for the viewing someone else was in their grandmother's casket. >> lunacy is what it is, unspeakable. >> we just want her to have a proper funeral and burial. >> that's a terrible story here. the family does not know what happened to their grandmother's body. they checked with the hospital where gray died and they tell us

they're now looking into the watch for you this morning. the irs is warning officials to watch out for phishing e-mails. it says the scheme seems to come from company executives. it adds to the recent surge in e-mail schemes. now to combat roles open to women in the u.s. army, there are plenty prepared to take on those positions. the first women to sign up is a north carolina high school student. jocelyn is a senior who is a member of the junior rotc. and now that she's a new army recruit, she's one of the first woman to be hired as a combat engineer. that means she will be responsible for detonating explosives and destroying obstacles. we talked to her grace she signed up.
