donald trump in the election this november. >> now, you'll hear from the super tuesday winners and we'll break down now virginia voted first, let's check in with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell and your weather held lions. chuck. >> good morning, guys, this is what you may need, that umbrella is going to be flipped inside out from powerhouse winds coming our way. winds could gust at 40 to 50 miles per hour. exceptionally windy. a chance of rain/snow combo coming up thursday night into friday. it's not terribly cold, temperatures in upper 40s to near 50. don't dress for the way it is, dress for the way it will be. later this afternoon, temperatures will fall back into the 30s. windchills below freezing after about 5:00 or 6:00 tonight. so layer up for the cold that is to come. windchills 15 to 25 degrees by tomorrow morning. very impactful weather

including virginia. he now has about 275 delegates in total. senator ted cruz won three state, arguably his home state of texas and his large number of delegates. florida senator marco rubio won only minnesota. he's looking ahead to his state aiz 's primary. hillary clinton won seven states last night including virginia. she now has morning 1,000 delegates more than half what she needs. senator bernie sanders took four states including his home state of vermont. >> we zoom in, trump won but marco rubio is only one behind him in that state. >> trump took 35% of the vote. marco rubio took 32%. and ted cruz took 17%. generally speaking, close to washington, d.c. went to

the focus shifts to where the campaigns go next, all of the candidates all vowing to stay in the race. tracie potts has what's ahead for each of them when she joins us like at 5:30. i'm angie goff here at the live desk with that exit poll we just went over the winners. no surprise that bernie sanders took 71% of voters under the age of 30. he also edged clinton among independents with 57% support. marco rubio's key groups were all about november. half of the people, he said they wanted a candidate with more political experience chose him over cruz, kasich and trump. he also won nearly 60% -- of candidates who can win the general election come this fall. we have more on super tuesday results on your nbc washington app. that's the latest from the live desk. for the first time in a year, astronaut scott kelly is back on earth this morning.

in a few hours, the maryland man charged with murdering his own daughter will appear in a prince george's county courtroom. there's a preliminary hearing against daron boswell-johnson. prosecutors say he admitted to waiting for neshante davis outside of their home last month when she and their 2-year-old daughter came out to the car. he confronted her about child support payments. today, two virginia families may get closure in the murders of their daughters today we expect jesse matthew jr. to enter a plea in the deaths of morgan hamilton and hanna

graham. the college students were murder the five years apart. of matthew is serving three life sentences for sex assault in fairfax. prosecutors say all three cases were linked by dna. the hearing will happen this afternoon and forever the harrington family, this deal isn't about answers, it's about accountability. >> for morgan and for us is about finality. infinite. for finality and culpability. >> once the deal is announced we will send a news alert to your phone using the nbc washington app. we should learn more today about how the centers for disease control is trying to protect you from the zika virus. that virus is being carried by mosquitos and linked to deadly birth

later today, the cdc and the food and drug administration will testify on what is being done to protect the country. 107 persons who travelled to at-risk areas contracted zika there have been not been any reported cases in the u.s. muriel bowser pulled her support for the merger of pepco and exelon. the deal rejected but laid out certain conditions for exelon for approval. one of those conditions is eliminating a three-wait for customers. bowser said she will not agree to that term the lawyer represents one of nine groups. pepco and exelon have about ten days to resolve any differences. police in montgomery county are looking for a shooter after police were

college at 10:00 a.m. when they found a man who had been shot in the leg. the victim flagged down a driver. that driver called 911 and drove the victim to a nearby parking lot at montgomery county. that victim is expected to be okay. investigators are still trying to figure out where the actual shooting happened. for a second time, the "anthem of the seas" is back at port before schedule. the ship is returning to new jersey because of concerns of severe weather and norovirus. nine to ten people a day were getting sick on board. this is the same cruise that sailed into a major storm in early february, scaring passengers on board. 5:20 right now. this is the announcement that making suffering through winter worth it. today, we're going to find out when the peak is for the famous cherry blossom trees. the festival will kick off. this is megan mcgrath live along the

hey, megan. >> reporter: hey, good morning, the festival is going to take place from march 20th through april 17th. in just a matter of hour, we're going to find out the first stilt for the peak bloom of the cherry blossoms. down here at the tidal basin right now, not a whole lot going on. take a look at this branch here. we have the smallest of buds. just little bumps on the end of this branch here. we've got a ways to go before we see the cherry blossoms bloom. at 10:00, we're going to get the first estimate. now, we did have warm weather over the winter. take a look at this video. in fact, the weather was so warm in december that some of the cherry blossom trees began to bloom. this video was taken on december 13th. there were even bees on some of the blossoms there. we're told by the park service that the bees are autumn flowering trees the ones found near the tidal basin and the washington monument.

don't worry, that warm snap, the fact that some trees began to bloom months ago. that's not going to affect the spring bloom at all. in fact, they have seen this sort of thing before and there's no impact at all of course, that's good news because the cherry blossom festival is big business here in d.c. we've got $126 million in revenue. there's 1.5 million people who come to the d.c. area to seat cherry blossoms in full bloom. we're going to learn about that peak bloom estimate at 10:00 this morning. keep in mind, though, as we get closer and closer. we're going to kind of tweak that estimate when they get a better feel for when the bloom period will happen. we, of course, will let you know as soon as we hear. back to you. >> megan mcgrath live for us, thank you. it's time to turn our attention to the weather, storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is telling us

good morning, chuck. >> okay, tom kierein is here, we're switching microphones so he can be outside a little later on. here we go, what to expect, today, wind, wind and more wind with falling temperatures. what to expect thursday night into friday. our next impactful weather event coming in. snow likely to come in late thursday evening. wet snow, some rain into early friday, friday, during the day if we're still getting precipitation, likely to be in the form of light rain and snow mixed together. the change comes at sundown and friday morning at sunrise. temperatures are going to be very marginal for this event. just barely above or near the freezing mark. accumulation on roads not terribly likely, could get a slushy inch or two of wet snow on grassy areas. for today, the big story is the wind. wind advisories across the blue ridge and shenandoah

really are just fine. we'll have traffic times in ten minutes. back to decision 2016, we have team coverage of virginia's primary results. we'll get to julie carey in a minute but first david culver on donald trump's win. >> reporter: it's trump who gets the win here in virginia. it's marco rubio's strong performance particularly in northern virginia. >> general, this is going to be his to lose at this point. and i think honestly, rubio needed to win virginia. he's not going to win virginia. and this could be bad for the rubio campaign. >> reporter: and i also caught up with gop leaders right here in virginia. i asked them about rubio's strong showing, what exactly does that mean going forward? >> when you compete in virginia, when you have a ground game, when you show up, when you have the phone banking, when you

you do to win here good things happen. that's what all five of our candidates showed. >> reporter: the gop proud at the number of voters that turned out. well over a 1 million. the previous turnout of gop voters in 2008 is what could help them going forward. >> reporter: virginia's top elected leaders say they're very encouraged by hillary clinton's strong showing here as they celebrated in old town. governor terry mcauliffe said that clinton phoned him to thank him. supporters say sends a strong message about november. >> this is a huge victory for us here in virginia. because of all the states tonight, virginia is one of the few swing states that's going to matter in the general election. >> reporter: the focus right

still on the primary contest, the governor told hillary clinton that he has two virginia senators in mind as possible running mates if she does win the general election. >> we told you there would be a battle in prince william county. they're split there. take a look at the breakdown here, senator marco rubio won taking 33% of the vote there. donald trump followed closely behind with 33.1% in prince william. the results are indicative of a trend we're noticing counties closer to a district or major metropolitan those rubio over trump. ♪ pray on just a little on longer pray on ♪ a touching memorial for a wife and dedicated mother who spent her time helping wounded service members. police say crystal hamilton's husband ronald killed her after

call for help. when officers arrived saturday night police say round hamilton shot and killed officer ashley guindon and wounded two other officers. police say that crystal loved being a mother to her son. >> our friendship, our bond, you know, it was only the two of us. and so, missing my other half, and when i turn to my left, i don't see her anymore. and that's something that i didn't get -- didn't get the opportunity to say good-bye. >> the family says that they're focusing on making funeral arrangements for crystal and supporting the couple's son. leaders in maryland are calling on highway officials to take a closer look at say deadly bethesda highway intersection. three members were killed near

pile road. county executives and other officials are urging the state to do a traffic study at that intersection. they sent a letter at the time maryland state highway administration asking for a comprehensive review. thousands have called for a commission calling for a traffic like at that spot. a federal lawsuit has been filed by friends of the cress september trial. the trail will link montgomery and prince george's county. supporters believe the line can peacefully co-exist. 5:37, your time now, after almost half a century, a local arts center may have to close. since 1974, the fillmore center has provided arts classes for drg public schools. students are bussed in one day a week for class ranging fr

to dance to digital arts classes. now d.c. public arts said it can could longer hand out the $2 million to keep the classes going. >> we have been funding a program and supplementing that program above and beyond what other schools have been getting. >> next year, if the five schools want to continue to use the center, they will have to pay for the classes. the second option is that the filmore center be closed and the individual schools teach their own classes. the schools must decide what they want by next week. the ultimate decision will be with the d.c. council which must approve the budget. new details this morning. in a story news4 was forced to report a month art big snowstorm. many of the private contractors who helped to dig out the district are still waiting for a paycheck. d.c. officials tell news4 the backlog adds up to as much as $45 million in unpaid

arguing that in the last several years. this morning, a virginia mother is demanding answers from the winchester police department about why her son died. >> where is my son, why can't i see him? and why won't you tell me what happened? that's my son. i'll never see him again. and i don't know why. nobody will tell me what happened. >> police are investigating delondry's death as a suicide. they say he shot himself while running from the police sunday. his mother says no one from the department will explain what happened. winchester police department has asked virginia state police to take over the investigation. a texas officer died in a shoot-out it happens in ulis, texas, police says when t

officer arrived on the scene he saw the suspect with a weapon. the officer was rushed to hospital but died during surgery. the suspect also died. a woman was stopped at dw marshall airport for her shoes. after officers spotted these stilettos take a look with the heels shaped like handguns. the shoes had bullets around the soles. and they were in her carry-on bag. she's also carrying bracelets lined with bullets. security says you cannot carry ammunition or weapons through checkpoint. happening today, the consumer product safety commission hopes to make homes safer for children. it's going to show off new blinds that are cordless or have a hidden cord that will take place at a safety summit here in d.c.

us of strangulation cases over the last 20 years. to decision 2016 now, where it is a race for delegates this morning. republican candidates need more than 1200 to qualify. while democratic candidates need nearly 2400. donald trump leads the gop delegate count with 285. followed by ted cruz. hillary clinton is nearly halfway to the democratic nomination with 1,000 delegates so far. nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill now. tracie, some people say the goal for the other candidates right now is to keep trump from reaching those 1200 or so required delegates. >> yeah, pretty much everybody says that. his supporters would probably say that. he's on his way. not nearly as close as hillary clinton to her goal. but he's about a quarter away from that goal. and then his focus is to hillary clinton. as he put it, once i pack away florida and deal with that, and

clinton. however, he should look over his shoulder because after last night, ted cruz is still a threat. he picked up delegates in texas, the biggest state. he won oklahoma. and then this morning, he won alaska, putting it all together. he's only about 100 or so delegates behind donald trump. still a threat. and that's why he's trying to consolidate the rest of the party, cruz is, saying let's everybody else drop out so we can focus on me beating donald trump. what's interesting about this race, we've seen it thus far, even after last night's results, disappointing for rubio, even more so for kasich and ben carson but none wanting to drop out. >> for hillary clinton, and what is ahead for bernie sanders? >> did his strategy work? yes, it did. he won four of the five states that he targeted. remember, he stayed away from those states in the south

"the washington post" reporting that a child did try to report the abuse to a teacher but was ignored. this in the latest with the elementary school who allegedly lured a child for abuse. the 22-year-old deonte carriway who is allegedly facing charges. to a sad story that's adding more pain to a family. virginia gray died last month after falling unconscious in her d.c. home. her family told us they made all of the funeral arrangements, but when they arrived to the viewing last weekend, someone else fwhas their grand mother's casket. >> lunacy is what it is. it's unspeakable. >> we just want her to have a proper funeral and burial if it's not too late. >> the family doesn't know what happened to their grandmother's body. we checked with the hospital where gray died, and they tell us they're looking into it.
