>> reporter: you can see behind me here just how busy this bus stop is. there is on naylor road, a lot of people around, and the shooting happened in the middle of the day on sunday. a very frightening situation, as you can imagine, for people in the area. a woman was killed, a man was hurt, and the killer is still on the loose. a work crew clears away the broken glass. the bus shelter on naylor road the scene of a deadly shooting. it happened in broad daylight around 1:30 sunday afternoon. a man and a woman were hit in the head with gunfire. the woman later died. >> she was standing by herself outside, and here you have people coming by and killed her. they don't have no respect for life willing to open fire in front of a bunch of people, just to get at whoever they're after. >> reporter: it's a

with lots of pedestrian traffic. also across the street from stanton elementary. kids had to walk past the shattered bus shelter as they went to school this morning. >> i have kids attending grade school, and they have to see this while attending school. it's petrified for them. they're scared, they're nervous. if this isn't a war zone, i don't know what is. >> reporter: the crime scene tape and the glass and the mess here at the bus shelter was just cleaned up at 9:00 this morning, some 20 hours after the murder happened, and residents say that should not have been the case, that this should have been cleaned up a whole lot sooner. they didn't want their children walking by this morning as they made their way to school. police are still looking for the people or persons responsible in this deadly shooting. they are looking for a green honda odyssey. they believe there may have been two people inside that vehicle. back to you in the studio. one woman is dead after a

county just before 3:00 a.m. on 75th avenue. police arrived and found two women had been stabbed inside an apartment. one woman was pronounced dead inside the apartment, the other woman was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive. police have not released any suspect information but say this does not appear to be a random incident. well, what a wonderful day out there. if you can't get out there today to enjoy it, you're going to have several other days this week to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. yes, we're seeing gorgeous conditions out there right now. you can see we've got clear skies out there. looking good all through and through. now, i do believe a few more clouds are going to build in as we get into the afternoon, but otherwise not looking too bad. temperatures are warming. last time we were in the 70s christmas eve. d.c. got to about 71 degrees. not going to have any rain chances until this weekend, maybe a shower on friday. we're still watching that, but for the most part, it's going to be this weekend befre

just search metro. the plan to build a new hospital in our area is taking shape. this morning montgomery county leaders broke ground on a new building for adventist hospital. it's located on bourne field way in silver spring. they said it's part of a bigger plan to create more jobs. the d.c. mayor is about to face ward 5 at a community meeting. it will be the first time she attends since choosing a shelter on 25th street. many were upset by that selection. a meeting is taking place on the bertie bacchus campus. for women's history month throughout the month of march, we're highlighting women who make our country great. >> her career advice for young

this morning we are remembering the life of former first lady nancy reagan. she passed away yesterday at the age of 94. >> during her time at the white house, she helped change the job of first lady from that of an ornamental figure to a public figure with her own policies and goals. she was also constant and fierce protector of her husband's legacy, even after he left the white house. >> ronald reagan, contrary to perhaps his reputation, was not an entirely secure, impervious man. she gave him the strength to become president and also become a major presence. >> one of the most recognizable relationships in american politics, nancy

fill potholes. they just announced an intensive effort, what he calls it, to fill craters over the next few days, saying department of transportation crews will be out in force. residents can report potholes through the county's 311 on-line system, but you can also tell us your pothole story. we want to hear from you. we have a special twitter page set up at 4pothole6. back to you. right now if you turn on the tap in d.c., arlington, or parts of fairfax county, you may smell chlorine, but don't worry, there's nothing wrong with the water. it's part of the annual cleaning process. it happens every spring. they do it every year to improve water quality. authorities will monitor the chlorine levels to make sure your water is safe. just when you thought gas prices were low, it looks like some spots are seeing pump prices creep up. in maryland, gas has gone up about 8 cents in the last week. aaa atlantic says a gallon of ga

that's more than you'll pay in the district where gas is $1.89. virginia comes in at the lowest price per gallon, $1.59 right now. gas is still lower than a year ago, which means more people are planning to travel for spring break. experts say you better start planning now. you should book by the end of the week for the family trip if you want to save money. low fuel prices mean airfares are down. there is a 6% drop for domestic flights and 15% increases on international flights. a survey by retailmenot.com found that 60% of people will drive to their destinations. florida and las vegas seem to be top vacation picks this season. that warm weather will be the draw. when we come back, what you can do today to honor the life of fallen prince william county

right now in massachusetts, funeral services are under way for ashley guindon from springfield. she was an officer killed on her first day on the job answering a domestic violence call. there is a blood drive honoring two other officers wound nd that same call. they are still recovering. search blood drive in the nbc washington app to find out how you can help. right now some intense weather on the west coast. it's coming down in northern california around sacramento. take a look at the torrential rain here. this caused flooding conditions in some places this weekend, mudslides in others. a woman in her car who tried to drive through the flooding died. after all that rain and snow, the snow started falling near sacramento last night as well, and this caused pretty much whiteout conditions as the

million from wall street for that superpac. >> auto industry bailout in last night's cnn debate. that was just one of the hot button issues hillary clinton and bernie sanders slammed each other on. flint water crisis also took center stage with both candidates calling for michigan's governor to step down. primaries and caucuses over the weekend. donald trump and ted cruz both walked away winners. trump took kentucky and louisiana. cruz earned wins in kansas and ma ma maine. voters backed rubio in florida. after that busy weekend, the candidates are now focused on the next primary tomorrow in michigan. nbc has a preview of what the numbers are looking like

elections. she said she is retiring to campaign this fall. the report says hollen is more likely to create compromise. it is a beautiful day out there today. my goodness, the skies are are bright blue. you know, we may have a few clouds trying to build in later on this afternoon and throughout this evening, but we're going to stay dry and not have to worry about anything. we're going to stay mild as well. i know everybody wants to know that, so we are looking good. our daytime high for today is going to be in the low 60s. we've got plenty of sunshine, low 60s, and all in all, not too bad. as i said, as we get into the afternoon, a few more clouds trying to settle in. but temperatures, again, are not going to be that bad. even into the overnight, we're only falling into the upper 40s, so we're looking good as we go into the overnight. the last few nights we've been in the 30s, so definitely doing well. if those kids want to go out

early this afternoon. it's considered a signal of recovery efforts. the cvs at pennsylvania and north avenues are reopened again. it's totally rebuilt following the violence last year. the store burned douwn in the riots after freddie gray died last april. a man pled guilty to setting it on fire. they are not commenting on why two firefighters trying to save a toddler were put on leave. it's a story you've been discussing on our nbc washington facebook page. all we know is an 18-month-old girl was having seizures. firefighters say there was no ambulance available to take her to the er, so they used her fire truck to get her to the hospital. after the incident, they were put on leave because the truck did not have the right medical equipment. the county says the situation is now under review. a bald eagle rescued from
