right now, moving the homeless. d.c. is clearing out a homeless encampment near union station. melissa mcgrath is live in washington where she spoke with some of the people being forced out. megan? >> reporter: well, some of the people that you see behind me here have been camped out here along union station on the sidewalk for a year or more. they have all of their possessions here. and this morning they are being moved out. now, back in february, the city gave notice that this tent city would be cleared out. there are concerns about trash and rats and the blocking of the sidewalk. today there is action being taken. the city is offering services and shelter, and some are accepting that help. we've talked to a number of people who are going to be attempting to move into a shelter facility. they left in vans here from the scene. but others are reluctant to come in off the streets. they say that if they have to, they will simply find another spot. >> if ey

if they put me in housing, get me an apartment, i guess i'll -- i'll go wherever they want me -- wherever they put me. >> where will you go? >> there's always places to go. i mean, i don't worry about it. i always find me a place to stay. >> reporter: and so, you can see that there are a lot of people bagging up their possessions, collecting their things. here's basically how it's been playing out. folks who are with their belongings, they will be taken from the site by the city, catalogued and stored. the owners can then come and claim them. any items that are not with a person -- there's no owner that can be identified -- we've actually seen those items being placed in the back of a trash truck that was brought here on the scene. we've seen some tents, we've seen some sleeping bags and other personal items put in the back of that trash truck because, again, they could not find the owner of those possessions. so, an o

on first street in northeast. reporting live in northeast, megan mcgrath, news4. record warmth in the forecast today with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. look at where we're currently at, temperatures in the 70s for most of us. washington actually one of the cooler spots with winds coming off of the potomac keeping a temperature there of 69 degrees. but it's 77 in leesburg and 72 up in frederick with a mix of clouds and sun. hazy sunshine out there. so, here's the forecast high temperature today versus the record high in the district. i'm forecasting a high of 80. the record to beat 78. and notice records at dulles and baltimore also likely falling today with temperatures again warming into the low to mid-80s as you head on into the afternoon hours. now, cooler air moves in tomorrow. i'll have more on that in ten minutes. i'm melissa mallay at the live desk. two gunmen on the loose this afternoon after a late-night shooting outside of pittsburgh

that left five people dead. another three injured. we now know four of those killed were women and one of the victims was a mother of five. investigators say the shooters barged into a cookout and opened fire. police said party-goers appeared to try to run into the home when someone started shooting at the back porch. one witness says she heard about 30 gunshots. people were running and screaming, she says. police do not believe anyone at the party actually fired back. the suspects then ran off. erika? developing right now, police are searching for suspects after a violent night in the district. two men are in critical condition after a shooting on benning road just before 1:00 in the morning. bullets hit cars and an apartment building in that area. police are also investigating a stabbing that happened a couple blocks away from there and a separate shooting near fourth and atlantic streets. still no suspects in any of those incidents. in decision 2016, the four remaining republican presidential candidates will debate tonight in miami.

traveled without a ticket on monday night. the woman was a resident of france who was in the process of adopting the child from haiti. no charges have been filed. a university of maryland baltimore police officer snapped this photo that's lighting up facebook. more than 35,000 people have liked this post. the officer watched a young man approach a homeless man and started praying over him. the post says "not all baltimore youth are lost and i had to post this." ben & jerry's fans, this is not the week to count calories, with three new flavors for you to try. hello! cookies and cream cheesecake, brownie batter and coconuts for caramel. i will take all three! and definitely ice cream weather, so do indulge. you don't really need an excuse for ice cream, as far as

dry conditions during the day, but as you move into the overnight hours and very early-morning hours tomorrow, a weak cold front will move through the area, bringing some scattered, light showers, potentially, especially north and west of town, and cooler temps for our friday. so, here's the timing with future weather. 10:00 tonight, we're still dry. so, even if you're out late tonight, still spectacular, especially in the temperature department. but look at what happens as we move toward 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. showers start to impact parts of montgomery, loudoun, frederick and faulkier counties, very light in nature. they could fall apart before making it into the district, parts of maryland and the northern neck around 6:00 a.m., so the morning commute tomorrow is dry. then we'll have increasing sun throughout the day, but again, cool cooler temps. i'll have the next four days coming up. one person is very upset about the noise coming from reagan airport. last year, the airport received more than

6,500 of them came from the same person. that's according to our news partner, wtop. that is the equivalent of 18 calls every day of the year. the airport is not identifying this complainer. airport officials say they are working with residents to address the noise issue. punches on the plane. a fight breaks out on a spirit airlines flight, and it was all caught on camera. officials say this happened on a flight from bwi marshall to l.a. apparently, two groups of women had been arguing throughout the entire flight over loud music, and once they landed, they started throwing blows. well, police had to, of course, enter the plane, give some assistance there. the women were removed from the pla plane, and oddly, nobody has been arrested or charged. >> well, that's not the kind of thing you want to happen on your flight. >> no, of course not. you don't want that to happen. >> maybe they had too much to drink. i

both suspects got away with cash. so, now there's a $10,000 reward available for information leading to an arrest in this case. >> if god hadn't have sent them, i'd still be in there. she says she's grateful that a d.c. firefighter saved her om a burning apartment building in southeast. now he is fighting for his life in the hospital. four school resource officers working nearby are being credited with sounding the alarm as one firefighter climbed a ladder. he had to share oxygen with one of the residents. he remains in the hospital this morning for smoke inhalation. three elderly people and a dog were rescued from that building. well, can you imagine what an extra million people would mean for d.c. traffic? the metropolitan council of government says the washington region is actually expected to grow in the next 30 years exponentially. it expects the region will add more than a million people. d.c., arlington and alexandria can expt

washington app for details on what lots are being recalled. pat? there is a man out there that police are looking for who's throwing $100 bills around. what he does is he gives the $100 bills to businesses and then tricks cashiers into giving the bills back. montgomery county police want you to call them if you recognize him. this is his picture. they say he scammed two businesses in jermantown last month. police say he uses a quick-change scam. that's when someone confuses cashiers and then gets the money back. a water fight is under way between neighbors and d.c. water. they are furious over recent water bills. recent work has caused their statements to rise. the water bills of about $80 to $100 have gone up hundreds of bucks for some. >> hober, they put in a new water meter. after that, we started to receive very high bills. i think the first one was for $500 and some? the next was for $1,700. >> we reached out

all this warm weather has pushed the peak bloom season for the cherry blossoms. they're now expected to peak between march 18th and the 23rd. more than 1.5 million people are expected to visit the district to enjoy the cherry blossom festival, which is really good news for businesses. >> well, it could be very positive for cities, that they're actually blooming during the time of spring break. so, lots of people have more flexibility. >> the blossom festival will take place as scheduled, but some

tax frauds happening this season. nbc's olivia sterns met with one woman who can't escape the threatening calls. >> this call is an official final notice call from the internal revenue services. we have filed a lawsuit -- >> reporter: so, he's saying final notice and we have filed a lawsuit. >> yes! it's scary. >> reporter: that's the third call gretchen lynn quist has gotten in three weeks from someone pretending to be with the irs and demanding money. >> it's very upsetting. and then this morning, again, one more time, from a different phone number. i'm starting to feel threatened by the repeat calls. >> reporter: luckily, gretchen, an ip analyst in houston, is savvy enough to know these calls are bogus. 900,000 people have reported getting one of these calls, and the irs estimates 5,000 have paid up. >> the concern is that we're just scratching the surface, that this is just the tip of the iceberg. and even anecdotally, knowing people in this office have gotten calls like this,

commercial space flight industry will be watching the hearing very closely. some congressional leaders think nasa should be putting more resources into building its own rockets. new numbers on all the parking tickets and moving violations that the district has handed out. aaa mid-atlantic says drivers owe the district more than $84 million in tickets from last year alone. and believe it or not, that number is low compared to other cities. in new york city, the number of unpaid tickets adds up to more than $750 million. in chicago, it's at more than $1 billion right now. aaa says the number of delinquent d.c. tickets is up 24% from the year before. it's also warning drivers that you can face a penalty on your taxes if you leave those tickets unpaid. after the break, the carmakers unveiling a new

water expected in the state today. nbc's janet shamlian shows us the worst of the damage. >> reporter: there is no relief for the people of many communities in the state of louisiana. right now the rain is coming down as it has been for the past 48 hours. an additional 3 to 5 inches in the forecast for today, and that is not going to help folks who are trying to get back into their homes in this flooded-out neighborhood known as tall timbers. some 100 homes in this community are under water. some of them have as much as 5 feet of water in their residences. >> everything you see is gone. i've got a brand-new roof on the house that's absolutely worthless. so, me and my three kids lost everything today. >> reporter: last night they called for an additional 3,500 families to a mandatory evacuation because as these waters rise, there is the concern that another levee will be breached by rising floodwaters here, and they do not want to take any chances. >> we want to keep everybody safe through this

bald eagles that died on maryland's eastern shore did not die of natural causes. now, this is according to maryland natural resources police. they say the investigation has now turned to human causes. a necropsy showed no aviation flu and that they were not shot. they were found on a farm and their deaths sparked a federal investigation. the bald eagle is no longer endangered, but is a protected species. a $25,000 reward is being offered this morning for more information. more now on a brazen, multiple shooting near pittsburgh. right now police are looking for at least two gunmen who opened fire during a backyard house party. four women and a man were killed. three others were wounded. police said people scrambled toward the house when the bullets started flying. jennifer tomasic reports. >> reporter: this is the backyard here in wilkinsburg where police say eight people were shot last night. five of them have died. three people are still alive and

hospital. it happened about 11:00 last night in wilkinsburg. franklin avenue is where the home actually sits, but it's the alley, hazel way, where they believe that one of the gunmen was standing when he started opening fire on a group crowded for a barbecue. the other believed gunman was in a neighboring backyard and started firing as well. they say that four people died here at the home, one died at the hospital, and at this point, the medical examiner has not released any of the names of the victims. and police at this point don't have a motive and they are looking for the public's help in trying to find what they believe are two gunmen who opened fire here on this backyard. jennifer tomazic for nbc news. a 4-year-old boy shot his mother in the back, and now she could face charges. the sheriff's office in putnam county, florida, says it appears this was an accident. they say the woman left a gun in the back seat of her car. then her son picked it up and shot her. this happened earlier this week. jamie gilt appears to be
