minutes ago another roads. chopper 4 over the inner loop of the beltway. the crash off to the left side as you're nearing connecticut avenue. so no major problems traffic-wise there. 270 southbound before 85, that crash is out of the way, but again we do have some delays still true that area. not too abnormal for this time of morning. might want to allow just a little extra time. northbound telegraph road after the beltway, left side blocked by that crash. big look at the beltway overall no major problems, again slow spots northbound through woodbridge approaching the beltway there on 95 just aed a slow. travel times in a few minutes. we have team coverage on metro right now, stations are back open and in service. metro says it made several repairs after yesterday's emergency shutdowns, but we want for start with commuters getting back for their

megan mcgrath is live riding the red line and talking to those commuters. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, good morning. we just left the shady grove station just a little while ago and as you can see, we somewhere lo lo have lots of folks on the train, but i'm told that it is lighter than usual this morning. i've heard that from a couple of different people. among those riding is kim. talk about how you feel about being on the rails this morning. >> i'm just happy that we're not single tracking. i didn't he ssee any alerts. so if we get smoothly into town, i'm pretty good. >> reporter: how safe do you feel? >> about normal. usually i feel like i'm taking my safety into my own hands when i get on to metro. but so far so good knock on wood. >> reporter: and donald, you thought the volume was a lot lighter? >> yes, doesn't seem like a lot

neighbors stood by helplessly as the house was destroyed unsure whether the man was still inside. the crane is being brought into help move debris. at least two other familiy ies neighboring homes have been displaced. one firefighter is hurt but expected to survive. we now know that a prince george's county coupolice offic was deliberately fired at by another officer. the chief called it a case of mistaken identity that led to an officer shooting jacai colson. officer colson worked undercover and was not in uniform when the shoot-out began. michael ford started the shooting and is charged with officer colson's death. he appeared in court yesterday and passed out when he found out the charges against his brothers. his two brothers are charged with driving him to the scene and recording the shooting. happening today, merrick garland is on his way to capitol hill for introductory meetings with senate judiciary committee

president obama announced the nomination to fill the vacant seat on the u.s. supreme court on wednesday. some say the president's nomination is setting the stage for a huge constitutional showdown. federal appeals court judge merrick garland is already well-known and widely respected in the local legal community. he's the chief judge of the u.s. court of appeals for the d.c. circuit. he left a law practice 25 years ago to work as a prosecutor. when he got to the justice department, he had overitsight important cases including the prosecution of timothy mcveigh. . >> people must be confident that a judge's decisions are determined by the law and only the law. >> he is the right man for the job. and he deserves to be confirmed. >> senate republicans have said held not hold a hearing for any nomination president obama makes and senator mitch mcconnell says he will not meet with the nominee today. today michigan's governor heads to capitol hill to testify at a house

flint water crisis. in a prepared testimony, rick snyder says he didn't know that the water was contaminated with lead until nearly 18 months after the city began drawing its because from the flint river. halves back in april of 2014. thousands of residents were affected by lead-tainted and undrinkable water. the nationals former first baseman is retiring with some controversy. it has to do with why adam laroche is stepping around. he says it's because the white sox won't let his son in the clubhouse for every practice. he has brought drake to the clubhouse for several years and when they said he koocht anym e couldn't anymore, he decided to retire and give up a $13 million salary rather than play. >> one of the executives for the team said who in this country gets to take their kid to work every single day. sort of a rationale. >> and the team says it tried to compromise, maybe brg

up. it's 6:32. it's all about metro this morning. we're following every angle of the emergency shutdown. the system opened about an hour and a half ago, a lot of you getting bag to your normal routines today. maybe feeling a bit safer, maybe having some concerns. megan mcgrath has been riding the rails all morning along talking to commuters on the red line. >> reporter: well, we are rolling right along here on the red line. no problems this morning the first day back for commuters since the shutdown for the emergency repairs and inspections. and folks this morning say they're noticing there are fewer people on the trains, that perhaps some people will work from home yet one more day. and i'm joined by dionne here. you are one of those who worked from home yesterday. >> yes. >> reporter: how do you deal about returning today? will. >> i feel good about it. it's just a summation of errors, i think they finally pifixed in the system. we're witnessing an aging system

downtown corridor. let's check in with erika gonzalez live at the foggy bottom the metro station. what did they find here? >> reporter: really unprecedented, who could have anticipated yesterday. metro completely shutting down. today a very different story behind me. bustling metro station this morning, all things back to normal, all lines running on a regular schedule today. we're here at the foggy bottom metro stations, one of the three locations that needed repairs. we're also talking about mcpherson square and the potomac avenue station. those were the other two stations where they found that cables needed to be repaired. gm paul wiedefeld showing us yesterday exactly why they shut the system down. look at this, frayed cables. metro inspected 600 cables and found issues with 26 of them. back here this morning, foggy bottom was one of the last

the nbc washington app. and we're working to find out how many people were hurt and how badly in this overnight crash. montgomery police told us several people were hurt when this car slammed into a tree on emery lane last night. you take a look at the front of the car, completely smashed in here. we didnon't know what caused th crash. a woman charged with doing yoga on the metro tracks may get the charges dropped today. it took police a few months to track down holly bentley, she's charged with trespassing after being spot order surveillance video doing yoga on the tracks there in virginia back in december of 014.yoga on the tra there in virginia back in december of 014. if she was given deferred it is position, which means if she completed her ten hours of community service, the charges may be dismissed. bentley's lawyer says she has completed ho completed hours. today we're highlighting a howard university grad. tracy tolbert works
