motor bike accident. >> we have breaking news, and derrick ward at the metro plaza station. derek? >> the first thing you want to know there is no one seariously injured in this incident. this was on the lower level, blue line of this station at the bottom level. the man's bag did get stuck, and he was dragged. metropolitan police, fire and ems and metro authorities did respond. brief delays on the blue line. a man suffered some injuries after being dragged along the platform after his bag got stuck in the door of the train which started moving. metro tells us that this incident is under investigation. we're

one of the eggs belonging to the world famous birds at the national arboretum hatched this morning. megan mcgrath has more on all of the excitement. megan, are you feeling it? >> yeah, a lot of excitement this morning as this all unfolded. this is as far as you can go here up this path. they wanted to make sure the eagles are not disturbed. there is a security detail making sure we're not going further. the tree is off in the distance to the left. there are two eggs in that nest. this morning the first one, that little eagle broke free of that egg and it all happened live on internet web cameras. he's been pipping or pecking his way out of the egg since wednesday. this morning success. >> it's so exciting. >> the eagle freed himself and made his debut. >> we think it's the male on

now. >> this family was watching the live eagle camera from home when it happened. they headed to the arboretum to try to get a glimpse of the tree. we clapped, we cheered. we were very excited. we got our notebooks. >> the eagle cam has been watched for weeks by these two children, recording their observations in notebooks. they were thrilled to see the eagle emerge from his shell. >> he had to get his other leg out. >> was he stuck? >> yeah, he was stuck. >> he had to push his other leg out. >> reporter: mom and dad affectionately known as mr. president and the first lady came to the arboretum last year. the first pair to come to the area in nearly 70 years. they've become celebrities as thousands have watched their family grow online via the live web cam. and you're taking a live look from our camera here on the grounds.

be one of the country's best sources of information in its fight against the terror group. the kurdish station, kurdistan 24, says it interviewed mohamad jamal khweis and that he's already talking about how he was recruited. >> i was with a girl who her sister was previously with -- married to a fighter for dash. she knew a connection to get -- khweis went to edison high school. if that is him in the video. he said he didn't agree with isis' ideology, that's why he escaped. it's not clear if he will return to the united states or be prosecuted abroad.

. >> aaron gilchrest at the live desk, we're learning about a large drug investigation happening at an air force base. as a missile site, a nuclear missile site. the associated press reporting that the air force is planning to announce details about the investigation involving at least six -- at least a dozen airmen at the warren air force base in wyoming. we're told part of this investigation might include the use of illegal drugs to include cocaine. those airmen have been removed from their responsibilities. details expected to come out later today. that's the latest from the live desk. devastating is what baltimore ravens coach jim harbaugh is saying about the team praying for the cornerback trey walker right now. walker was seriously hurt in a crash while he was riding a dirt bike last night. it happened in miami. miami-dade pl

collided with an suv. he was in critical condition the last time we had an update on the crash. we'll continue to follow this story. d.c. place are investigating an alleged sexual assault on the campus of an elite d.c. school. police say this happened on wednesday afternoon at the s sidwell friends upper school. a female student claims a male student forced her to have sex on school property. the police report says the two students "are known to each other" and have had a previous sexual relationship. the school said in an e-mail to news 4, it's the longstanding policy of the school to cooperate fully with any law enforcement investigation. it is also our policy not to comment on such investigations. this morning some schools in the district are warning parents about attempted abductions. according to the "washington post" at least three elementary schools all sent letters to pt

mellon 25 years ago for an exclusive interview about his father's gift to the nation. we had to dig deep into the archives to bring you this report. ♪ >> reporter: in the spring of 1941, america's national gallery of art opened its doors. president franklin roosevelt presided. hundreds attended the opening. the man who made it possible, the man whose idea it was to have a national art treasure, who gave the money, chose the architect, oversaw the construction and contributed his own private collection worth millions. andrew mellon wasn't there to see his dream a reality. he died just four years before the gallery celebrated opening. his name is not above the door. he wanted this to belong to america. his son, paul mellon, remembers. >> my father, having been in the government fte

lived in washington, having realized there was no national gallery here, thought that there ought to be a national gallery. >> reporter: he said his father wasn't always an art connoisseur. andrew mellon is remembered in history as one of the wealthiest and most important banker industrialists. paul mellon said his father began to love art through travels with arthur frick. there's little written about the private side of andrew mellon. paul mellon says his father was quiet man. >> he wasn't really a person very easy to get to know well. >> but when andrew mellon put his mind to anything, he seemed to be able to make it happen. he was successful in banking, in business, as a secretary of treasury under three presidents and as

of st. james in england. from his first years in washington he was determined to build a national treasury of art. >> a lot of the visits who used to come to his apartment to see his pictures would ask why there wasn't a national gallery in washington. or where is the national gallery? and he had to say there is no national gallery. so maybe he was little bit ashamed that there was no national gallery. and that, i think, is the main reason he wanted it without his name. >> reporter: so, for those who have come to view the much expanded collection now housed in the gallery, andrew mellon has left a very special place. a place as franklin roosevelt said is known not by his name but by the nation's. paul mellon, who died in 1999 provided the funds for the east wing and contributed much of the valuable contents there today. they'll celebrate him

we are learning much more about the alleged american isis fighter. a fairfax county man who joined the militant group and quit. he told a kurdish tv station he wants to come back to the u.s. richard engel reports. >> reporter: he's the first alleged american isis fighter to surrender to kurdish troops in ira iraq. >> my name is mohamad jamal khweis, i'm from the united states. >> reporter: in a taped confessional aired on kurdistan 24 tv, the virgin describes how he traveled through turkey, linked up with isis in syria, and was transferred to the iraqi city of mosul. >> the life in mosul, it's really, really bad. the people were controlling mosul and don't represent the religion.
