southeast washington. police on scene here after a police cruiser was fired on. i'll have details. >> a university puts out an alert about sexual assaults. i'm shomari stone. more about it all new tonight at 11:00. and thanks for joining us. i'm jim handly. >> i'm doreen gentzler. tense moments tonight after a man opened fire on a dc police cruiser. jack i ben sen is off martin luther king jr. avenue in southeast with how it all went down. >> reporter: this happened in broad daylight. people were walking down the street at the time. a dc police cruiser sits at an angle in the 600 block of mellon street southeast surrounded by yellow markers indicating shell casings and evidence. officials say it happened fast and unexpectedly. about 5:45, a man began shooting at the passing police vehicle. >> this was an unprovoked attack between the subject and the officers. >> the officers drew weapons and returned fire. in the chaos, a

to avoid the gunfire threw her car into reverse colliding with a lexus suv behind her. the officers were able to locate and arrest the man who fired at them. >> there was an apprehension of the subject. he was wasted shortly thereafter and two firearms were recovered. >> there were no injuries, not even the two people involved in the crash. in southeast washington, jack i ben sen, news4. the paris attack suspect arrested just days before the brussels attacks will make his first court appearance tomorrow. >> and now we're learning that salah abdeslam play add i key role in the airport and metro bombings in belgium. team coverage of the developments starting at the live desking with chris lawrence and the search for american survivors. >> we just learned the state department has not accounted for all-american workers in brussels or their families. right now they're trying to track down both government employees and other uz citizens. agents in brussels are in the middle of a

one suspect who they think went on the run after the attacks on tuesday. now word from turkey that they warned belgium about one of the terrorists nearly a year before he died in tuesday's blast. ibrahim bakraoui and his accomplices detonated several bombs at the airport and train station allegedly killing 31 people. one of the bombmakers they thought got away but now think he died in the blast, as well. if they can place the bombmaker at the scene it helps connect the dots between belgium and france last year. richard engel is digging into that connection from brussels. >> reporter: it unfolded like this. back in paris amid the shootings and bombings, one of the attackers salah abdeslam made it away. he made it to belgium where a senior official said he rebuilt what was left of the cell and started to plan for new atrocities.

three suitcase bombs in the airport attack weighed as much as 44 pounds each and belgian authorities today uncovered a huge stock mile of explosives the terrorists left behind. >> what does that say to you about what they found? >> we found detonators and material to produce them. we know how they operated. >> thomas is a counter-terrorism expert who advises the belgian government. >> the question one is whether that factor was used for other operations for making other bombs that might still be out there. so that is something we need to be very careful with. >> reporter: this is yet another house police have raided as they follow the evidence trail. we don't know all the details what they found inside but what is clear they are very much playing catch up. >> they found ibrahim's will on a computer left in a dumpster. he said he felt hunted

end up in jail. >> an arlington woman fought off two men who tried to abduct her while she was walking last night. those two attackers are still on the loose. the victim was in the 200 block of north columbus street when one of the men put a bag or shirt over her face while one of the men covered her mouth, the other assaulted her and touched her inappropriately. last summer, there were a number of reported assaults in arlington but it's not clear if this attack is connected. there's a new alert tonight on the campus of george maven university. police are warning students will sex assaults that happened in campus residence halls over past week. shomari stone talked to students today who say they're being more careful since the alerts went out. >> i'm astonished by it. >> reporter: blair is concerned after receiving an alert. it said two of students reported being raped. >> i

else. if not, i'll be more aware of my surroundings. >> reporter: one student reported to police a man she knows raped her in a student residence hall or in an off campus apartment last thursday. the she says she may have unknowingly ingisted a drug before the assault and in three other cases, police say students reported being sexually assaulted by men they met on an online dating app. at least one rape allegedly happened in a residence hall on the fairfax campus. students we talked to tell us they feel safe at george maven. >> i feel safe on the campus. i've been attending for four years. >> reporter: they like that the university sends out alerts. >> i am very impressed about the university's response. you constantly hear about universities covering stuff like this up. but george maven is very forward about any incidents that happen on its campus. >> reporter: tonight police are investigating the alleged sexual assault and urge anyone with information to c

maven police department. in fairfax, see marry stone, news4. new details now on a double shooting in waldorf, maryland, just moments ago, the charles county sheriff's office told us one of the men who was shot has died. the case is being investigated as a homicide. it happened just after 6:00 this evening on giddings court not far from the st. charles town center. the second victim is expected to survive. police still looking for a suspect. >> scary moments for passengers on a flight into reagan national. there wasorablely a call for smoke in a cockpit of a southwest flight arriving from chicago. firefighters checked out the plane after it landed and allowed it to taxi to a gate. everyone got off safely and the plane was collected again by firefighters. it is unclear if they found anything significant. >> we're days can away from the district rolling out a third party ambulance service. >> news4 obtained a special order from the fire chief

i have zero family history of cancer. >> reporter: but cases can of colt lon cancer seem to be on the rise among younger people. doctors can aren't sure why. >> i learned that colon cancer was an old person disease that the didn't really start until you were about 50 but what we are observing is a shift, younger and younger folks getting it. so now we have patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s with colon recollecting cancer. >> reporter: dr. john marshall is the chief of hematology and oncology at med star georgetown university hospital. more than 100,000 cases of colon cancer are diagnosed every year. it's the second leading cause of cancer diegos in this country. the american chance he society recommends first time screening at age 50 unless there's family history of the disease. >> so the big trick here is if 50 is the line when you're supposed to be screened are, these people who are younger than 50 would never be

happened to austin. >> they did every single test imaginable. it's not your gal bladder, not your appendix. >> excruciating pain sent her to the hospital two summers ago but the cancer wasn't diagnosed till months later. and by then it had spread to her liver. doctors operated immediately and after a year of chemotherapy she is now disease free. 36-year-old amanda feigel was always tired but thought she wasn't feeling well because she was a new mother. >> my maine symptom was abdominal pain. >> doctors thinking it was an ovarian problem did exploratory surgery and found nothing. >> they recommended the colonoscopiy. that's when we figured out there was such a large tumor they couldn't complete procedure. >> reporter: they removed the tumor but some of the casser had spread to her abdominal cavity. au though she is still considered stage 4, her latest scan showed no evidence of disease. >> so the challenge
