some cooler conditions for the upcoming weekend. breaking news. rescue crews are working to pull a man out of a water tower in gainesville, virginia. chopper 4 over the scene. firefighters say the man working on top of this tower on old carolina road when he fell through a hole on top. he is injured, not clear how bad his condition is or isn't or how far he fell. there is no water inside that tower right now. a med he vac chopper just arrived to take the worker to the hospital. news4's darcy spencer is on the scene as well, working to gather more information which we will bring to you as she gets it. back to you. we're also following some more breaking news in prince william county where a road crew member has died. police say he was a flagger and was hit by a car. >> chopper 4 flew

at davis ford road in manassas, a mile off prince william parkway. police tell us the person who hit him did stay at the scene. right now, the prince george's county detective killed during an ambush on a plagues police station is being remembered. the viewing is underway right now in bellsville. >> it's going to continue for the next several hours and is open to the public. county bureau chief tracee wilkins joins us live. >> reporter: it started the morning with a private viewing just for the family. at 2:00 p.m., the doors opened to the public. and i have to tell you that this is the first time we have not seen a line in front of this funeral home here in beltsville. here's what it's been like all day long. since 2:00 p.m., since they first opened up those doors, there has been a steady line of police from around the region, and just everyday citizens who wanted to pay their respects to officer jakai coalson, worked

police department for four years. he was mistakenly shot and killed by a fellow officer during an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect. police say a gunman unloaded on the district 3 police station while trying to commit suicide by a police officer. what happened this is still under investigation. and three suspects are in custody, facing numerous charges connected to that shooting. today, we heard from the colson family for the first time as they described how they feel about their son. >> that's a hero inside there, and that's what we're proud of. he's an outstanding young man and excellent role model for a lot of youth coming up. >> reporter: this viewing continues until 9:00 p.m. tonight. his funeral will be tomorrow. coming up on news4 at 5:00, we hear more from the coleson family. they have been dealing with this unbelievable tragedy in silence for so long. today they spoke out for the first time. reporting live in beltsville, tracee wilkins. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you,

word signs warn kmurts that it can affect traffic. you can check the traffic section of the nbc washington app. we're tracking fast-moving developments in brussels, including the revelation that the brothers behind tuesday's attacks had nuclear ambitions. nbc news is reporting that khalid and ibrahim el bakraoui spied on a researcher with the hope of building a dirty bomb. 30 people died, 200 others injured. u.s. government employees are still unaccounted for. prosecutors say there is a direct link between what happened in brussels and last year's terror attacks in paris. isis militants claim responsibility for both, and now u.s. attorney general loretta lynch is offering her condolences. >> i also want to make clear that while we have received no specific credible threats to the homeland, we will continue to remain vigilant in order

american people safe from harm. >> in our next half hour, we'll have a live report from brussels, why authorities there are lowering the security threat level. right now, president obama and the first family are headed back to washington after a trip to argentina. today the president visited a memorial for the thousands of people who died or disappeared during argentina's dirty war. the president acknowledged the u.s. was slow to speak out about those atrocities. the obamas then visited the picturesque patagonia region. right now police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man on martin luther king jr. avenue in southeast d.c. gabriel turner had just finished breakfast with his mother. he had been taking a cut-through between some apartments when someone shot him. turner's family said he had been doing janitorial work for the fbi for the past 15 years. pat collins talked with the victim's mother. we'll hear from her in our next

hour. the national weather service issued a red flag fire danger warning for the area. there have already been a number of fires today, like this one in woodbridge. the forecast is calling for windy, dry weather. loudoun county has banned open burning because of this danger. and there are questions about whether top metro leaders are getting the truth when it comes to metro repairs. >> some are openly questioning whether critical maintenance is being handled the right way. transportation reporter, adam tuss was at a general board meeting today. >> reporter: chris, i can tell you there was a different feel to this board meeting than a lot of other board meetings. without saying it, some implying, that front line metro workers are not telling the truth about maintenance repairs to the system. of course, all of this comes after the emergency situation last week at the mcpherson square station. a lot of people said that that particular incident was a

incident a year ago. and then others saying that that relationship will i cat situation cannot be repeated again. metro general manager, paul weedfeld talked about the possibility that some people may not be telling the truth. >> i'm making that very clear, that that is not acceptable. and if i find that, obviously, that will not be tolerated. but so i do -- i definitely have a sense of a shift in the organization that they're starting to shift the way i manage, to what i expect from them. >> reporter: several others addressed the issue of whether or not repairs were being made. some even calling into question whether or not metro's own watchdog needs to get involved in this investigation. guys. >> of course, adam, a lot of this -- these questions and the responses from weedfeld stem from those electrical cable inspections. is that right? and what specifically is being called into question about that? >> rte

local restaurants working hard to reopen for the weekend after it became the target of a bizarre crime wave. >> yes. someone reportedly tried to get a digital ransom from the hard times cafe. the computers at the chain's rockville location got infected with what's known as ransom ware. it shut down the restaurant's system and demanded $10,000 in bitcoin to get things back online and restore the files. without a way to safely process credit card transactions, the restaurant just shut down, and right now owners are installing a brand-new system. >> and we'll feel a lot better about at least being told we've done everything we possibly can to protect our client base, and move forward. >> so the owner is hoping insurance will cover the cost of replacing the computer system. the redskins former star quarterback is about to embark on a new beginning. you haven't seen the last of rg3

threatening homes or structures. it is occurring near the boat house. other area is already under a red flag warning today, because we have low humidity and we have some strong winds that areu;cj÷ gusting at 35 miles per hour. so that means there is a risk of wildfires. so we'll bring up updates as they come? >> in thanks, wendy. veronica, we have some wind and rain coming. which would certainly help to put out fires. or spread fires in. what about the cherry blossoms. >> we were just talking about during the break, some of those blossom petals could be taken down. some of them. as you'll see. we have a couple chances to get some rain and that means also wind with some of these weather systems moving through. at the end of the week, tomorrow, as well as early part of next week, then the mid part of next week. so again, a couple opportunities as we make our way right through early part of peak for the weekend and monday, tuesday, wednesday of next week. so let's talk about tat

until 8:00. everywhere here in the red. what that means is higher temperatures, the higher winds today. and the low humidity all leading to some of those brush fires that could come about and spread rather quickly, too. the other thing we're seeing with the wind, the pollen being blown around. the oak, pine pollen, very heavy producers for today. i think we'll see the pollen drop a bit tomorrow. perhaps as low as moderate for tomorrow. because our temperatures will be in the 60s. you can see we'll be dropping to the 60s by 8:00 this evening. nice and mild evening, though. the next change for us early part of the day tomorrow, we'll start out in the 60s instead of the 50s. but early on, when we have those rain showers coming through, we'll be a little breezy, as well. so keep that in mind. that is the next change you'll notice. you just need a small umbrella. the pocket or purse-sized umbrella for first part of the day tomorrow. very light rain showers coming through, probably only .10 of an inch. breezy,

here's the rain, 5:00, 6:00 a.m. coming into the area. there we are at 8:00 a.m. you can see not many. by late morning, that rain starts to make its way out of here along i-95 and east. and by the afternoon, hours 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, there you are, back to some sunshine. so breezy sunshine for tomorrow. if you have plans to go out tomorrow night, the wind will be hanging on. temperatures drop to 55 to 60 degrees. again, dry conditions for us. and this weekend still looking nice and dry. your saturday, a few high clouds moving through. 60 your high temperature on 3:00 at saturday. el cooler start at 45. sunday starting out at 45 degrees with temperatures going a little higher, back up to at least close to 70 degrees. but i would like that it's looking dry, because rain does enter back our way for monday of next week. so sunrise service, cool but sunny. for the easter egg hunt, mild and looking dry. taking photos, ample sunshine. we have the green light for this

check it out. a car plunges off a parking garage in maryland earlier this week. the driver says she was parking her audi when the vehicle suddenly lunged forward. she broke through the concrete barrier, fell four stories, smashed into the sidewalk below. amazingly enough, she wasn't seriously hurt. >> wow. well, in news4 your health, you and your partner might want to skip the coke or the coffee if you're trying to have a baby. a new

more likely to miscarry if she and her partner drink more than two caffeine beverages a day in the weeks leading up to conception. researchers say this doesn't prove cause and effect. but it does suggest a possible way that couples can increase their chances of a successful pregnancy. the study also found that women who took a daily multivitamin before conception and during early pregnancy were less likely to miscarry. the study done by nih and ohio state university involved more than 500 couples. today a federal judge gave volkswagen less than a month to come up with a plan to make its diesel cars comply with clean air loss. but 600,000 volkswagons are involved in a cheating scandal and now the clock is ticking. volkswagen has been working with regulators since january. by april 21st, the company has to set a time line to let owners know if they'll get money. here's a

appetite. sushi night at a japanese restaurant in california took a rather bizarre turn. a man walks in with two small snakes and starts showing them off. this happened sunday night. customers complained. don't blame them. and the man was asked to leave. well, he got mad and came back with a 13-foot burmesi python. employees called 911, firefighters came in, wrestled with the snake. the man's behavior and comments landed him in jail. >> people were saying he tried to use it as a weapon or something. i don't think so. he just -- he was just trying to show off, you know. like this is my snake and putting it on his shoulders and stuff. >> yeah. people always take their snakes to dinner, right? animal control now has the snake. police arrested the man on suspicion of making criminal threats. which is a felony, by the way. and this guy previously spent time in jail for unlawfully selling endangered and protected species. >> wow.

the home protected. we'll watch it and other brush fires popping up. we're also keeping an eye on breaking news out in virginia, where rescue crews have just rescued a man from a water tower. this is in gainesville. the man was working on the tower when he fell through a hole on top. we're not sure what his condition is or exactly how far he fell. but we do know there's no actual water inside the tower. news4's darcy spencer will give us an update in about 30 minutes. now to the latest on the terror attacks in brussels. the search is under way for at least one, possibly more terrorists involved in tuesday's deadly attacks. >> the police failed to prevent this attack, but very few belgians are pointing fingers or placing blame. nbc's steve handelsman is in brussels for us tonight. what are you hearing there, steve? >> reporter: chris, thanks, good evening. from ordinary belgians out here $e streets of their capital again and from the halls of government now is coming a

this tiny nation to deal with its internal terrorist threat. as the crowd grew at the memorial in central brussels, kevin plun knelt, weeping. for many the horror is just sinking in. 31 people killed and reason to fear another attack. at least one of the suspected terror team still on the loose. the man in white. turkey put out this photo of ibrahim bakraoui, one of those at brussels airport, and said turkey warned belgium last summer when he was deported that he had ties to terror. back in belgium. ibrahim and brother khalid who brew himself up at the metro train station worked with najim, and the paris attack last year. should police who found a major paris suspect friday in th

you know, sort of stem that fire before it starts hitting those homes? >> well, we've got a lot of resources up in that area, as you mentioned. this is not the first fire we've had today at the moment. in fact, we have two significant fires. but this one in the germantown area has encroached upon some structures. we do have units deployed in that area at this point. and for the most part, it's leaves. and we know today was a red flag day. there was a very dangerous fire condition with the strong winds and the low humidity. so we're not surprised about this activity. but nonetheless, we do have a lot of resources deployed in that area, including some large capacity water tankers. but this is just going to be some really grunt work we have to get in there and create a fire line, transport the water in to extinguish these fires. but, again, the weather is not in our favor at this moment. >> pete, what are you telling people who live around there? are you evacuating anyone? >> i presume they are. i'm not on the scene just yet. bu

direction. but they have done some evacuations. it's somewhat of a remote area, as you can tell. but there are some homes. this is in the vicinity of blunt road and brink road in the germantown area. there are some homes that are close to the fire. firefighters are with those folks. i'm not -- don't have a number of people vacated at this point. but we do have some structures that being impinged upon by this fire. we also have a fairly large fire up in the black hills regional park area near the boat house. we have a lot of resources also in that fire as well. >> pete, you know, we're looking at pictures, olymplive pictures from chopper 4 and we can see firefighters on the ground, literally in the backyard of some of these homes, trying to put some water on some of the flames. and you see the smoke very close to the homes. but you mentioned this being a very remote area. what sort of problems or hurdles does thatr

getting enough water in there? >> well, for an example, we are bringing in large-capacity water tankers, and we will, you know, use thousands of gallons if necessary, certainly. our fire engines all carry several hundred gallons of water. so we have to constantly refill those. we'll bring in some four-wheel drive vehicles and be able to get those back in, as well. but, again, their water capacities are limited. so we have a water site using a creek, i believe, off in the area of brink road and blunt road. i believe they're going to use a fill site, and typically we'll fill a -- looks like a swimming pool to the layperson. but, you know, a water fill site area. and we'll draft water out of that and fill our units as needed. but we have to shuttle that water back to the site, and, again, most of this -- it's very lab orrous work. we'll get back there with small hoses and rakes, essentially. but our primary objective here is topr

we've been talking about those brush fires. more than two dozen people have to find a place to live after flames ripped through prince george's county. >> everyone made it out safely. we're glad to report many are assessing their losses at this hour as investigators try to figure out what sparked this blaze in the first place. news4's molette green reports from brandy wine. >> reporter: in the light of day, the devastation is clear. fire destroyed four townhouses, damaged two others. flames broke out around 4:00 a.m. while homeowners slept on chatsburg drive in brandy wine. >> i woke up and saw two units

the house. when i came outside, everything was in a blaze. and two minutes later, the whole unit was on fire. >> reporter: he got his parents up and out in time. >> popping. >> reporter: now watch as firefighters and investigators go through their charred and damaged belongings. >> we've only been here two, not quite three months. >> 25 people forced out of their homes, escaping a raging blaze out injury. >> they arrived and found fire showing from the front of four units literally from the ground to the roof. >> reporter: homeowners pick up what's left. daryl crawford fared better than his neighbors, but he says -- >> it's cold and dark. power is out. it's in disarray. it's not home any more. >> we're just happy that everybody is okay. everybody has a lot of insurance. and we're just thankful that god and -- that god got us out of

hackers behind a series of cyber attacks on american banks, and a dam. >> yeah, this is the first time the government has accused individuals trying to disrupt our infrastructure from another country. nbc's brian mooar is live on capitol hill, with that part of the story. >> reporter: there are past cases. the united states has been reluctant to reveal exactly what it knows. but not this time. between 2011 and 2013, shadowy foreign hackers took aim on dozens of new york's biggest banks and a small dam. today u.s. officials publicly charged seven iranians and stopped just short of accusing the iranian government. >> these are attacks were relat relates, systemic and widespread. >> reporter: 46 major financial institutions were hammered over a matter of months. customers unable to access accounts. in what's known as denial of

>> these are essentially throwing a tremendous amount of content at a web server in an attempt to get it to crash. >> reporter: this attack in new york and the computer that controls water levels could have been catastrophic. >> at the time of this alleged intrusion, the dam was undergoing maintenance. and actually had been disconnected from the system. >> reporter: the indictment alleges the hacks began in 2011. months after an iranian nuclear facility was crippled by an infamous cyberattack long blamed on the united states and israel. the seven iranians indicted in the u.s. attacks all worked for companies that do business with iran's revolutionary guard. >> and we want them looking over their shoulder, both when they travel and when they sit at a key board. that's the message of this case. there is no place safe on this increasingly small world. >> reporter: a small world that for better or worse is more connected than ever. russia, china and north korea have all been suspected in this kind of attack. but the united states in this case is showing a new

the people responsible. live on capitol hill, brian mooar, news4. >> thanks, brian. going to get an update now on our weather. what you're seeing here is a live picture of these wildfires we've been talking about this afternoon. this one in germantown. another one in boyds, maryland and it has been dry, lauren ricketts. that's one of the reasons we're seeing brush fires in march. it's rather unusual, isn't it? >> well, you know, we're starting to go into the peak time for brush fires to pop you have. we've got low fuel moisture, 8%, and gusty winds out there. and that humidity, the relative humidity is only between 25 and 30%. so very dry conditions in all of those combinations lead to criteria to create some brush fires. everywhere in pink, you could be in the zone to have brush fires pop up. that goes until 8:00 p.m. tonight. so anybody in this area could see some brush fires pop up

not only today, but also last night. laurelwood had a few brush fires. breezy today and also tomorrow. so we'll have to see what they do for tomorrow. but the good news, we're going to have rain chances tonight. so hopefully that will diminish everything as we can wetten everything. brush fires, as i said, all over the area. wind gusts right now up to about 30 miles per hour. and it's going to be pretty breezy, continuing through the evening. and even through the overnight. very warm conditions out there. this was also leading to temperatures over in the mid 70 degree mark. and right now at 75 here in washington. 77 in leesburg. 77 in manassas. 78 in fredericksburg. tonight as you're driving around, temperatures in the 70s. fairly mild, fairly breezy. but looking good. clouds will start to roll in after about 9:00. but the rain won't move in until later on overnight. i would say after about midnight. that's when our big change comes. showers through tomorrow morning. so bring that umbrella with you. and, again, we're going tbe

going out to see the cherry blossoms. clear conditions out there right now. not looking too bad out there. we've got a lot of rain. and even a little snow coming up through the midwest. yeah, they've got winter weather advisories and warnings from nebraska toward maine. for this system. and this is coming our way. but not going to bring us snow. we're in the 70s. going to bring a few rain showers. and, again, after midnight tonight you can see a few rain showers push in. in time for us, it's going to be between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. prime commuting time. and we'll clear up by the afternoon. if you're planning to see cherry blossoms i would wait and go after the lunch hour. we're looking good as we head into the evening on friday. and even looking good for saturday. here's a look at your friday hourly forecast. in case you are planning to be out and about. not bad. temperatures right around 70 degrees. and we will get some clearing by the afternoon. once again, it is going to be breezy. and as far as rain intensity goes, light showers coming through. the area. so all in all, not bad. i think the cherry blossoms will

these dangerous fire conditions. >> we're not surprised about this activity. but nonetheless, we do have a lot of resources deployed, including some large capacity water tankers. but this is just going to be some really grunt work we have to get in there and create a fire line, transport the water in to extinguish these fires. >> there is another fire burning just about eight miles away at black hills regional park in montgomery county. so firefighters being spread quite thin tonight. we should mention, a series of brush fires, almost exactly the same time last year in montgomery county. at the live desk, i'm scott macfarlane. >> thanks, scott. yeah, and it is that time of the year as we come out of winter with our last little bit of snow. last time we really had any appreciable rainfall just over a quarter of an inch, was more than two weeks ago. so we've got the perfect combination across the area.
