♪ >> he was a cop's cop. he stood up and he fought that day and i'll never forget that. rest easy 3693, we got it from here. >> officer colson will be buried in his home state of pennsylvania on monday. now, there are still plenty of questions and this investigation into what happened outside of district 3 is continuing. but today's focus was on the life of officer colson. coming up on new 4z at 6:00, some of those questions are asked by politics and account executives who was wondering who should have access to guns in this county. reporting live, i'm tracee wilkins. back to you all in the studio. a measure of keeping repeat drunk drivers off the road is one step closer to becoming law. today the maryland state senate approved a bill called

law use an ignition interlock system. the police officer who was killed by a suspected drunk driver last fall. metro's top safety official turned in his resignation one week after the transit system shut down metro rail for an entire day to conduct emergency safety checks. it also came on a day when a fire broke out in the tunnel in northern virginia. news 4 chris gordon live at the claredon station on the day's events. >> as if metro didn't have enough problems s to begin wit adam tuss broke this story this afternoon on the nbc washington app. lou brown has been the acting chief safety officer for about six months now. his resignation becomes effective april 22nd. the position of chief safety officer has been a precarious one at metro to say the least. in addition to scoreof

issues, the previous chief safety officer was publicly criticized by the metro board and then he resigned. now, metro will be conducting interviews for a new chief safety officer next week. the resignation of lou brown comes on the same day that all of the metro stations here in arlington, virginia, were closed for about an hour this morning because of a fire. the fire broke out in a tunnel here at the claredon station. arlington county firefighters were called to the claredon metro station just before 10:00 a.m. they intartered the station and found light smoke. >> we evacuated the station and had units shut down power to the third rail. >> reporter: a metro emergency response team found the fire in the tunnel leading into the claredon station. metro says it was caused by burning debris on the track bed and was not an electrical cable issue. metro service was

roslon and shuttle buses transported passengers between the five arlington stations that were closed. >> i tried to get off and they had metro buses coming back and forth and it was taking like 40 minutes. i got back to head back. but it's just been ridiculous. >> you've given up? >> yeah. >> reporter: just before noon, metro began single tracking orange line trains between boston and foggy bottom. but silver line trains stopped at east falls church. >> there is nothing on the board that says when the next train is coming. you know, it's just people are asking me if there's when the next train and i have no idea either. >> too late. part of my job. >> reporter: it's too late for your job? >> yeah. caused by a single track. >> reporter: now, this evening orange line service is back to normal here at the claredon station and throughout all of the stations in arlington. coming up on news 4 at 6:00,

metro's explanation of the cause of today's fire isn't sitting well with some metro passengers. that's the live at claredon station, chris gordon, new 4z. i'm pat lawson muse. the latest on the situation in belgium. right now we're learning more about the victims. they include two american siblings alex and sascha pinczowski. the pair had just gotten to the airport when the bombs went off. in brussels authorities took three people into custody. belgium officials also confirmed that one of the suicide bombers at the airport is the same suspected bombmaker from the paris attacks. meanwhile, salah abdeslam being held in belgium has stopped cooperating with investigators, refusing to say anything about the brussels attacks. chris, back to you. >> thanks, pa

kerry traveled to brussels to offer his condolences on behalf of the united states. today kerry laid a wreath in honor of the victims and met with some of the belgian officials and first responders. kerry says over the past year, belgian has made significant improvements in fighting terrorism, despite failing to stop the attacks on tuesday. belgian officials are still working to identify all the victims from the attacks, but we know some people are still unaccounted for. in the next few minutes, we'll hear from some of the survivors. here at home someone shot at another driver during a road range encounter in virginia. police are still looking for the gunman. this happened in the catlett area. a driver and a truck similar to this one came up from behind him. the driver was driving aggressively and then shot at his window shattering the glass. the victim told police he saw the driver pointing a gun at him. he tried to follow that driver but lost him near roe

this happened at 1:00 in the morning. well, you saw the sun shining behind a lot of our reporters. the clouds are clearing out. just in time for a very busy weekend. >> we've got spring break, we have easter weekend and we have the cherry blossom festival and a lot of people on the roads and a lot of people outside. >> yeah, a look at the weather. what can we expect? >> including your travel forecast for sunday, too. right now the trend we're seeing right now the clouds move out of the area. taking a detailed look at your weekend. sunshine. it's a nice one out there after the morning rain. evening forecast will continue with mostly clear skies, especially late by 9:00. our temperatures were nice and mild today. we're seeing the wind pick up a little bit. so, 60 degrees and start to get a little breezy with that wind out of the west. the weather front moving through. the rest of the rain and even the clouds moving out of here. so, it's a good set up for the first part of the weekend. second part of the weekend as we go from sunshine. we'll see some clouds move in. this is sunday.

a possible step towards justice for a little boy who was shot in the head near a playground in the district. his family regarded his recovery as a miracle. they may have some new hope with an announcement of an arrest in this case. news 4 derek ward is live at d.c. police headquarters with an update on jaydan stancil. >> yeah, this goes back to october of 2014. it was a friday just like

gunfire in the 3800 block of hay street northeast. the victim, caught in the crossfire of all of this was 9-year-old jaydan stancil and out there playing when the shots erupted. three people in all were shot but jadan was the most serious of them and d.c. police officers jumped into action as we hear now from police chief cassie lanear. >> when the officers were on the scene they realized how serious his injury was and potentially fatal. saving his life they drove him to the hospital saving his life. >> reporter: it did save his life. he wasn't expected to recover, but he did. now today they arrested 27-year-old kenneth parker. he's got 14 counts against him in connection with that shooting on hay street. they found parker at d.c. jail and he was under arrest and already incarcerated for some

now, again, he's facing 14 new counts in response to this and police say that they are not finished. she spoke to jaydan's mother and she thinks there are more to come this place is still open. one of five cases that police were announcing today. five cases in addition to this one that were closed and we'll have more about that coming up later on news 4. we're live right now outside police headquarters. back to you. >> thanks, derrick. an nfl player convicted will not be put on probation. ordered jackson to pay $1,000 fine and 50 bucks in court fees. he plays for the indianapolis colts but had a home here in d.c. he attacked the pizza delivery driver last year fighting over a parking spot. at least 31 people were killed in those attacks in brussels and that includes two americans. more than 250 are wounded and

dozens of them are in the icu and pat lawson muse are in the early stages of identifying. >> reporter: alexander and sascha pinczowski among dozens of victims. the siblings were on the phone with relatives when two bombs exploded in the prbrussels airport. belgium privacy laws and even counselor officials from visiting those in the hospital without the patients' consent. then late thursday hospital officials shared the name they were treating with the family. the pinczowski family released this statement. "the belgian authorities tonight provided, to the families a list of the names of all remaining victims of the tragedy of march 22 who remain alive. sadly,

were not among them. the state department is struggling to get information. >> it's still, i know, two days later very fluid. >> reporter: among those still unaccounted for. justin and stephanie shults last seen dropping her mom at the airport. karen north shield, an american trainer living in belgium also at the airport. she is in critical but stable condition. about a dozen americans are known to have been injured, including mormon missionaries. all of them still hospitalized. right now more than 120 people are being treated including 20-year-old fanny who suffered serious burns to her head and hands. it sounded like the end of the world in one second she said.

there was ash everywhere. doctors have described the blast injuries as similar to those in a war zone. images of the aftermath leave little doubt as friends and family search for answers and hold on to hope. pat lawson muse, news 4 washington. we just heard pat talking about mason wells, one of the mormon missionaries. he suffered second and third degrees burns on his hands and face and also had shrapnel embedded in his leg. today wells talked to matt lauer and told him he feels lucky to just be alive. >> i was conscious. i was conscious for, you know, the whole four hours following the bombs and even when they went off. my burn injuries and injury to my foot, i know, came from the first blast. i actually saw fire in front of my face and on the ground around me

from that. my body was lifted off the ground during the first blast and it was very loud and i started running towards the exit. started running towards the exit and i had taken a couple steps about three seconds later the second blast went off and it went off to my right and i could feel the blast. i feel very lucky to have made it out with the injuries that i had being so close. i hope those other families know that as many care about them and that are wishing them the best. >> the thing about it is this isn't wells' first experience with terror or even the second. he was just a block away when the bombs went off at the boston marathon and last year stationed in france during the attacks in paris. one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country is here in the district an

even early part of next week. spring breakers. again, winds starting to pick up for today and then we have another chance of a little bit of rain coming our way on monday. monday morning the wind could pick up a bit, too. again, just some of the petals may be blown off the trees. as far as the evening goes, breezy. gets a little cooler. temperatures drops to 60 degrees by 9:00 and more clearing and 50s. upper 50s by around 10:00 this evening. leave the jacket if you're heading out. you can see that little blip there and that is the last of the showers eastbound. there's the front. here's what i'm talking about. we're still seeing some clouds in d.c. along areas of 95 and west look at all that clearing. maryland all the way down to southwestern areas of virginia. tomorrow morning mostly clear and much clearer than this morning. 50s to low 60s. back to the 30s. upper 30s to mid-40s by early tomorrow morning. tomorrow is a great day for getting outdoors. the best out of the weekend, really. 50 degrees by 11:00 a.m. and

nice conditions at 11:00 a.m. pull up past 60 degrees tomorrow afternoon. if you're going out saturday night, you'll need a light jacket. 46 to 56 degrees. not expecting any wind but expect to get a little cool and look at all the cloud cover behind me. that is the light you see here on future weather and 6:00 a.m. sunday and a lot of clouds and you'll notice a little bit of dampness in the air. not a whole lot. i think our shower chances will hold off until very, very late sunday night early part of the day monday. so, your easter planner forecast. you can see the cloud cover. a lot of high clouds. mid-50s by 11:00 a.m. mid-60s by 3:00 in the afternoon. not the prettiest of days but it will be dry and temperatures hold in the 50s even as we make our way through the evening hours on sunday. if you're out late and maybe sitting around with family with the door or the window or the patio. egg hunt, it's looking dry. mild conditions we've got the green light for that and certainly for sunrise services. it will be a little cool.

sdwr one man driving aggressi aggressively for several minutes and the other driver tried to run him over. in the past half hour, police have made an arrest. david culver is in lorton to tell us about his story. >> reporter: his morning commute seemed normal until he looked into his rear view mirror. slamming on its brakes and then repeating that several times. >> she was tailing me and swerving. >> reporter: decided to pull off the main road and pulled into this shopping center where you have a giant, a coffee shop and plenty of people to be around and thought he'd be safe here. she took the car and went after him, again. >> hit me three, four times and i got out of my car and she chased me in her car. trying to run me over. >> he says he got out of his car and she still comes at him which, with the vehicle, that's essentially a weapon, too. >> that's why we're calling it

>> reporter: this road irage victim too scared to show his face or give his name. along with witnesses, he dwav police a description. >> white female approximately 20 to 30 years old. 5'6" to 5'8" and 160 pounds approximately wearing a lime green shirt, blonde hair and driving a red convertible. >> reporter: officers say the victim tried to do the right thing attempting to defuse the situation by pulling off the road. >> go to a public place if you're near a police department or a fire station and that would be the best place to pull off. >> reporter: the victim says he doesn't know what sparked the outrage. >> i'm still a little afraid. i just want somebody to catch her and put her in jail. >> reporter: just a short time ago police confirming that that woman was taken into custody in prince william county. she's currently undergoing a mental evaluation and police saying as of now would not face any charges. coming up ahead on news 4 at 6:00, what that suspect allegedly said to the victim that could make this a very different case. in

officer christopher brosner after police say blare tried to run away during a routine traffic stop on tuesday. blare then died from that injury. but he's accused of dragging the officer with his car. on thursday, the state's medical examiner determined blair did die from a single gunshot wound to the leg. the officer is on leave until the investigation is completed. a warning from police about black bear sightings. a bear and cub spotted in someone's yard yesterday afternoon. grabbed a bird feeder, as well as a bag of bird seed because you can't have one without the other and then took off towards i-66. just a day before, two small black bears were spotted near stream valley park. police are telling everyone to keep a safe distance from these bears. >> those bears don't look all that small to.

two hours ago the national park service announced cherry blossoms, yep, they're blooming and they're peaking. >> over the next week, you'll want to keep our nbc washington app handy just to keep tabs on the festival and find the best way to get around. >> nature reporter mark segraves is in the thick of it at the tidal basin with what is sure to be a very busy weekend unfolding. mark? >> hey, wendy. that's right. i had some pretty sweet assignments that have brought me out into nature and this is one of them. but the cherry blossoms are blooming and they're at peak and that means the traffic is, too. this is what you have waiting for you if you decide to drive down here. thousands and thousands of people, thousands and thousands of cars all trying to get to the same place. with the blossoms now at peak bloom, it's up to mother nature as to how long they stick around. >> we've seen for the last several days crowd coming up this weekend. it's easter. the weather is supposed to be nice. easter egg roll on

part of next week if the weather cooperates, we'll see traffic and crowds like this. >> reporter: once you do get down to the tidal basin, there's lots to do and see beyond just the cherry blossoms. ♪ but getting here won't be easy for most of you. there are the traditional options for getting here. of course, metro is one of your best bets, but one of the escalators at the smithsonian station is out. lots of people ride bikes, but like cars, parking for bikes is limited. there were people who did both. drive and then bike. did you bike from burke? >> no, we got really lucky and got rock star parking right on constitution and took our bikes out and here we are. >> reporter: of course, there is one way to see the blossoms and get the best view as well as avoid any traffic. only one or two people live out on pennsylvania avenue probably have the opport

and then decided to try out vre to get back taher car in springfield. she says she bought her ticket here at the alexandria station and then got on the train. when the conductor asked to see her ticket, that's when things went down hill. he told her it was an invalid ticket. >> the conductor that i dealt with, you know, really treated me as if i was a criminal. >> reporter: although she said she paid for the ticket about 3:30 in the afternoon, the time stamp said it was purchased at 8:37 that morning. she is adamant she bought it in the afternoon and said her credit card company has verified that. >> i have proof that i actually paid for it. i didn't steal the ticket from someone else and try to reuse it from that morning. >> reporter: she has asked vre to give her a waiver but hasn't heard back. vre ceo doug

specifically, but there is a process for riders who feel they were unfairly ticketed. >> we have processes and if it is something that is waivable, we'll process it that way. >> reporter: she could skip court by paying a $100 fine and court costs. but she plans to fight her case before a judge next month. in alexandria, darcy spencer, news 4. a little girl is recovering this afternoon after she got hit by a car trying to catch a school bus. it happened right along lewistown road just north of lake anna. investigators say the 11-year-old was waiting to cross the street and we are told she did break a few bones but expected to survive. the state of virginia came down on stafford county and said its fire department broke some rules. now, the county is making some changes. late last month two firefighters took a sick toddler to the hospital in their fire truck. now, the child was having a seizure and the firefighters were the first to get there and thought they could get the child

seven day. first, it is such a nice evening out there. the weekend looking great. as i said, we have rain chances on monday and then again towards the end of next week. so, we're dry and i know i had a few rain showers earlier this morning and now we're clearing out and we're warming up next week and we warmed up today. temperatures are right around 70 degrees and temperatures now in the 70s in fredericksburg and charlottesville and everybody else in the mid up toer 60s and shenandoah valley and temperatures in the low 60s. with the clouds clearing, those temperatures are going to fall pretty quickly and also feels a little cool out there because we have this northwesterly wind and, boy, gusting up there. 18 miles an hour in gaithersburg and 31 miles an hour in winchester. we'd had these winds through much of the day here in d.c. you'll have some of the petals missing if you're headed down to the cherry blossoms by tomorrow morning. good news is, lighter wind tomorrow. but beautiful picture taking. almost looks like it's

any real snow. clearing the clouds out rather quickly and mostly clear overnight and that's when temperatures plummet because clouds act as an insulator for us. without them, that temperature falls with the clear skies and lighter wind. so, 30s to mid-40s inside the beltway. it is going to be a chilly start tomorrow morning. so, when you wake up tomorrow morning, much cooler conditions. again, temperatures anywhere from the upper 30s to the mid-40s but eventually we'll warm up taright around 60 degrees tomorrow. looking good for tomorrow. mostly sunny and much lighter wind out there. 60 degrees is our normal temperature for this time of year. not doing too bad. and then a little warmer for easter sunday. we'll start that morning cold. so, again, if you're heading to sunrise services, bundle up. temperatures will top out in the mid-60s by the afternoon and increasing clouds but we'll be dry. so, what to wear. look at that little boy. he looks so cute in his jacket. might want to grab that jacket and i don't believe you'll need

about the two americans killed in the bombings? >> well, chris, it is a tragedy, not unexpected but fits into what john kerry came here to belgium to say. to remind nations that the fight against isis-inspired terror is the fight of every country and the death of these two young new yorkers all the way over here shows that is the case. their loved ones had feared they were among the 31 dead in belgium since the terrible phone call. alex and sascha pinczowski telling their mother they arrived at brussels airport when there was the sound of a blast and then silence. the pair was close to the suicide bombers and the identification of their bodies finally confirmed today. the siblings lived here in new york city, dutch citizens who loved america. sweet kids said friends today. one girlfriend of sascha called her an awesome chick.
