there before after interrupting a session of the house. the lockdown on the hill has been partially lifted now, but the visitor center is still closed. >> we have team coverage on the hill and outside the hospital where we believe dawson was taken, and we start with pat collins. pat? >> reporter: doreen, it happened around 2:40 this afternoon. a man with a gun tries to go into the capitol visitor center. a metal detector goes off, he pulls out a gun, a cop sees it and wounds that man. here is what some visitors had to say. >> it was just shock like what was even happening. like the police were just running around. our tour guide, she was a freshman in college. she had no idea what was going on. she was trying to call her office building to figure out if there was any word on what was happening. >> reporter: kay yot snchaotic? >> definitely. >> reporter: scary? >>

us to all gather into this room and stay away from the doors and the glass, and then they held us there for 20 to 30 minutes. >> we weren't told anything. we weren't updated on anything during that, so we were confused. we were looking up things on our phone and calling people from the outside to try to find out what's going on. >> reporter: now, a short time ago we heard from matthew verderosa, the capitol police chief. he says this guy is a lone actor. there's no evidence of terrorism. he says this guy was previously known to the capitol hill police and his vehicle has been located. the investigation of that vehicle continues on. here nis the chief. >> reporter: during routine administrative screening, the individual drew what appeared to be a weapon and pointed it at officers. an officer fired and struck the suspect who was subsequently treated by medical personnel.

single person who has frequented the capitol grounds before and there is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act. >> reporter: now, chief verderosa says he expects everything on the capitol hill to be back to normal tomorrow. doreen, back to you. >> pat collins, thank you. this is cell phone video showing the moments following the shooting from inside the capitol visitor center. you can see it was a chaotic scene as people were scrambling, rushing out, doing whatever they could to make sure they were safe. >> the coverage continues now. ska scott macfarlane is on capitol hill with more on the suspect. scott? >> reporter: his name is larry russell dawson, 67 years old, and he's known to u.s. capitol police. he's from antioch, tennessee. in fact, a vehicle outside the capitol grounds with tennessee markings still being investigated by police. we have some images of that. why is he known to capitol police? dawson was arrested last fall for

proceeding. in fact, he was in the chamber and police say he shoved or assaulted a capitol police officer after she tried to stop him. d.c. superior court judge issued a stay away order to dawson that included the entirety of the u.s. capitol grounds, the library of congress, the house and senate office buildings, the capitol and the visitor center. larry dawson is suspected of having what they call a pellet gun on him today, and if so, at least 12 times since 2012 somebody carried a gun or something that appeared to be a gun on capitol grounds. the shot that was fired by u.s. cop toll police, injured dawson. the second time gunfire has occurred since last april when a man committed suicide on the west front. live on the east front of the capitol which is now reopened to traffic, scott macfarlane, news4. >> thanks, scott. shortly after all this began this morning we watched as paramedics wheeled a man into an ambulance outside the capitol. we now believe that man is the

that ambulance went to med star washington hospital center. our jackie bensen is there with the latest. >> reporter: some new information. officials do confirm that man is in the hospital and in critical condition. we understand he's still in surgery at this time. now, as you said, we saw that exclusive nbc news video of the man being taken away from the hospital. he was brought here to washington hospital center which is a level one trauma center, meaning they deal with the most serious injuries, gunshots, of course, among them. during our afternoon here we have been watching investigators come and go. at least one detective from d.c. police as well as others coming in and out of the hospital. at one point an officer took into the hospital what looked like an evidence bag, possibly the suspect's clothing or his personal belongings, but again right now what we're told is the suspect in surgery or recently just out

senate republicans for refusing to hold hearings on supreme court nominee merrick garland. meanwhi meanwhile, there's now information reported in "the washington post" that she was warned use of her personal e-mail server while secretary of state could cause a security breach. the article says the fbi sped up the investigation to finish it well before election day. the republicans have their own controversy. senator ted cruz attacked donald trump in wisconsin today saying trump has no real policy plans. >> so instead he yells and screams and curses and attacks people and threatens lawsuits and attacks their wives and attacks their families. >> donald trump, good morning, sir. >> reporter: on a morning talk show in wisconsin, trump says he would stop the personal family attacks if cruz did. >> and i didn't start it. he started it. if he didn't start it, it would have never happened. nothing like this would have ever happened. >> reporter: trump will make an official appeal to the gop over the louisiana primary where he won the state but cruz received more delegates. and donald trump will be in wisin

campaigning tomorrow. he needs most of the state's 42 delegates to help him reach the 500 more he needs to get the republican nomination. reporting live on capitol hill, edward lawrence. now back to you, jim. >> thanks, edward. there's some controversy over whether people can take guns to the republican convention. as of today there are 42,000 signatures on a petition that would allow people to openly carry guns into the convention in cleveland in july. it's called open carry. it is allowed by ohio law. but the convention will be held at an arena that bans all weapons. in addition, the secret service does not intend to allow anybody in there to take guns in. in a statement to news4, the secret service says it has the authority to ban firearms at sites visited by the people the agency protects. and anyone who takes a gun will not be allowed through security. a developing story right now involving med star lt

a computer virus that's affected several hospitals, including washington hospital center and georgetown university hospital. med star says the virus prevented some employees from logging into systems, but all of its clinics remain open and functioning. the fbi now trying to figure out whether the virus is so-called ransom wear in which hackers will extort money in exchange for running a victim's systems to normal. med star has no evidence so far that any patient information has been stolen or promised. compromised. tracking a windy evening out there. in fact, a wind advisory is going to be in effect for just about everybody, and that's going to run through midnight tonight. now, here is the latest temperature forecast. you can see 8:00 temperatures fall into the mid-50s. by the time we hit midnight, low 50s at that point. it will be a chilly one out there this evening. here is the latest on the wind

we continue to follow that breaking news on capitol hill where the lockdown has been lifted after a shooting this afternoon at the capitol visitor center. the focus now at washington hospital center where the suspect is in critical condition and has been in surgery. we've learned that suspect is larry dawson, a man from tennessee. sources say he pulled a pellet gun at the visitor center security check point and police opened fire. he was arrested on the hill last year after interrupting a session of the house.

we're also following some breaking news here at the live desk. nbc news has confirmed the fbi has broken into an iphone that belongs to one of the san bernardino shooters and accessed data from it. that means the government is saying it doesn't need apple's help anymore and it's dropping the court order against the company. the government has been locked in this battle with apple over the past couple months. the tech company was concerned if it helped the government unlock a phone, that would set a bad precedent and possibly compromise security for all of its users. vance? >> thanks, chris. there's some new details about a man who was hild and killed by a marc train in howard county. he was a suspect in a number of shootings over the weekend. tracee wilkins in maryland now with a look at how police put this all together. tracee? >> reporter: well, that train struck the man here in lanham. prince george's county pol

looking into this man. we're told he's a gunman who is a suspect in two shootings, including one here in prince george's county. it was a suicide that shut down the marc baltimore penn line as police investigated the body of a man struck by a train in lanham. police confirm that man was a suspected murderer on the run. police have identified the decedent at 52-year-old del prado of greenbelt. >> the shooting occurred just outside of the travel center. >> yesterday howard county police say dell prado allegedly shot and killed chad daniel of florida and shot and injured 57-year-old warren weeden of baltimore. in an unexpected twist, howard county police now say the double shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity and del prado may have been looking for somebody else. after that shooting, he then shot and

now at 6:30, we are learning more details about a police shooting at the u.s. capitol visitor center. >> sources tell nbc news that the weapon the suspect pulled

gun. a capitol police officer shot him and he's now in critical -- or the suspect is now in critical condition tonight. larry dawson is no stranger to u.s. capitol police. he was arrested last october for disrupting a session of the house and for assaulting an officer. police believe they have found his truck parked on the capitol grounds. news4's darcy spencer is at that scene with the latest on that. darcy? >> reporter: hi, doreen. we are on maryland avenue on the southwest side of the capitol. we're basically in a holding pattern as police wait to search what we believe is the suspect's pickup truck. you can take a look here. this is the truck. it is parked in a permit parking lot only right next to the reflecting pool. the capitol building is off to my right and then the botanical gardens. that's where this truck is parked. police have been out here for the last couple hours. you can see u.s. capitol police officers have surrounded the truck. tric

maryland avenue. joggers and walkers are still able to come through this area, so it's not a complete shutdown. they are keeping people away from the truck, about a 20-foot distance, and keeping an eye on it, but we believe they are waiting for a search warrant in order to get inside this truck and see if there's any evidence inside that could lead them to the suspect, also any evidence in connection with why he entered that building today, sort of what was the motivation. i'm not sure if courts are open today but it may be a matter of trying to geldt ahold of a judg today to get a search warrant signed so they can come back out here and begin that process. we would suspect later on they would probably tow the vehicle away. right now u.s. capitol police are still here waiting to get inside this pickup truck just to see if there's any evidence inside that could help them with this investigation. the streets here are open. the sidewalks are open. it's a very popular tourist time so those activities are

search warrant. back to you. >> darcy, thanks. as you can imagine, this was a chaotic day for lawmakers trying to make sure their staff was safe. >> these are not tweets from senators today. first from maryland senator ben cardin who told everybody earlier today his staff was safe. >> connecticut senator chris murphy said his staff was accounted for and new york senator chuck schumer and many others proaised the work of capitol police and thanked them for keeping visitors and staff safe. now, new information tonight connecting some high-profile crimes in reston. police are looking at a man already in prison for a long list of crimes. >> there are now documents that have been unsealed that link him to a violent home invasion on edgemere circle and a nearly fatal fire on st. trinian's court. julie carey has

>> reporter: antwan green, he grew up in reston and now he's accused of a long-running crime spree there. the 35-year-old has not yet been charged with the arson fire that destroyed this townhouse or with the nearby home invasion, but this search warrant document connects him to both crimes. december 3rd, two suspects knock on the door of this town home on edgemer, circle. one grabs the 67-year-old resident and throws her to the floor. her hands and feet are bound with electrical cords. they flee with her vehicle but dump it later. inside police find mail addressed to antwan green. then december 4th, green is suspected of starting this townhouse on fire. neighbors tell news4 he rented out the basement but had just had a falling out with the town homeowner. she received critical injuries jumping from the second-story window to escape the flames. residentrecalled her cries for help this night. >> within five minutes the living room was pretty much

>> reporter: these court documents again point to antwan green. investigators write that green was captured and video at a nearby convenience store just before the fire. he was buying a lighter, charcoal, and lighter fluid. what's more, a juvenile informant tells police green was present at both the home invasion and the fire. even though green hasn't been charged with the arson or the home invasion, he's been accused of plenty of other crimes in fairfax county to keep him behind bars. look at this long list. and this, this is his mug shot from arlington. he faces nine charges there after smashing a stolen car into several other vehicles on the day he was finally arrested. in reston, julie carey, news4. we're following a developing story in belgium tonight. the stole suspect arrested directly in relation to the brussels terror attack is now a free man. nbc's ayman mohyeldin is working the story from brussels tonight. >> reporter: belgium's federal prosecutor announced on monday

they have been holding since thursday night known only as faycal c. he was released because of a lack of evidence. he was a man the federal prosecutor had initially charged with three crimes including committing murder through an act of terrorism, belonging to a terrorist organization, and a conspiracy to commit terrorist acts. now, the surprise announcement came just on the heels of the belgium police once again appealing to the public to help them identify a man seen on airport surveillance video wearing a light colored jacket and a dark-colored bucket hat. now, this man authorities believe was involved in the attack. he has not been seen since last tuesday. police thought they may have had him with the arrest of the man known as faycal c. it's been considered by some as a setback on the investigation. there have been continued home searches and raids across the country. there are people that have been takn

some have been released. others have been charged with participating in a terrorist organization but none of the charges have any indication that they were necessarily linked to last tuesday's terrorist attacks. in addition to that, we also know that the death toll from those attacks has now steadily risen to 35. that does not include the three atta attackers. that after four people who were being treated at a belgium hospital died as a result of their wounds. ayman mohyeldin, nbc news, brussels. the sheriff in loudoun county has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing as it relates to accusations related to his re-election last year. sheriff mike chapman had been accused of taking donations from corporations and then reporting them as personal donations. he also was accused of committing computer trespass for obtaining e-mails between one of his employees who was running against him and a fairfax county employee. the

the city of alexandria investigated all of that and as it regards the campaign donations, the investigation says that sheriff chapman included the names of the corporations on the required paperwork. and as it relates to the e-mails, they were obtained using the freedom of information act and no laws were broken. we're going to tell you coming up who former maryland governor is the supporting for congress. the school redistricting plan has some local parents concerned. we'll tell you many in the latino community say they feel left out of the decisionmaking process. blustery tonight and tomorrow. coming up, i'll walk you throughout your day, how cool it will feel when you factor in the winds in your neighborhood.

nbc 4. and amelia joins us now with the forecast for a day that started out really crummy, but, boy, did it get delightful later on. >> blustery. >> yeah. the winds picked up. we had a little bit of everything. morning rain, clouds, sunshine, windy conditions, a high of 70. tomorrow we're going to be talking about cooler temperatures and tracking breezy winds. from start to finish, a wind advisory show still in effect for most of the area. it will run until midnight tonight. what does this mean? it means when you walk outside you immediately notice the winds. maybe some isolated branches coming down in spots and, unfortunately, definitely having a negative impact on the cherry blossoms. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. 62 in washington. 54 back in winchester. for travel you definitely need the sunglasses. outdoor exercise, cool and breezy. maybe some long sleeves and just heading out and about, i would recommend a light jacket. temperatures will feel like they're in the 40s and 50s.

the overnight and early morning hours. so waking up around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. when news4 today is on, temperatures will be around 48 degrees. a little cooler in the suburbs. and as we look toward lunchtime, this is what it's going to feel like with the winds. temperatures generally feeling like they're in the 40s and low 50s. from 48 in the district to 50 in manassas as we move into the afternoon hours. it only feels like a high temperature of 55, so you want to keep that in mind. you will be noticing how much cooler the air is tomorrow than today. 7:00 tomorrow evening. temperatures feeling like they're in the 40s and 50s. the latest on the cherry blossom forecast. we're already starting to notice some of the petals coming down and the winds tonight and tomorrow will continue to bring the beautiful petals down. heads down to the tidal basin tomorrow, you will want a light jacket. on wednesday high temperature of 62. thursday we will start off with limited sunshine but clouds quickly make their way on into the area. we are warmer though.

college basketball now for a moment. i'm sure you ripped up your bracket by now. the final four is set. not many people had these four in the final four. syracuse, north carolina, villanova, and oklahoma, the last four teams standing in college basketball. let's talk about the major upset though from yesterday and that was the syracuse orange taking out the virginia cavaliers. what a game this was. the big surprise, syracuse a tenth seed in this tournament taking on virginia, a one seed. they trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half. the cavaliers looked ready for houston, but they rode their freshman, malachi richardson. 21 points in the second half to help the orange to punch their ticket. the cavaliers a sad end to one of the most decorated senior classes in uva history but as always, they were humble in defeat. >> we're not going to hold our head over this one
