caused chaos at the capitol visitor's center. we now know the charges the suspect will takes for reportedly pointing a pellet gun at a capitol police officer. >> right now kristen wright is live outside the capitol with more on the charges. >> reporter: good morning. that's right, larry dawson facing some very serious charges this morning, assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed. this morning dawson is in the hospital. at last word we heard that he was in critical condition. dawson is a 66-year-old minister from antioch, tennessee. chaos at the capitol yesterday after police say dawson pointed a pellet gun at officers at the visitor's center security checkpoint. an officer fired and shot dawson. the capitol on lockdown yesterday afternoon. a woman was hurt just minor injuries, we're told she should be okay. the visitor's center today will reop

judge in d.c. sue earor court after he's out of the hospital. back to you. and this is not the first time larry dawson has had a run-in with capitol police. he was arrested last october after interrupting a house hearing about defending planned parenthood. dawson was placed under a court order to stay away from the capitol. police did locate his car on capitol grounds and are going through it now for evidence. that suspect was taken to head star washington hospital center. but we're learning some alarming developments about an issue still affecting med star hospitals. there was a virus in the computer system that forced hospitals to shut down all of their computers. now, this virus prevented certain users from logging in. m medstar says it is working with the fbi, but there is no sign that anyone's personal information has been stolen. the hospital system also says

however the staff is using backup paper systems. the problem is affecting ten hospitals and more than 200 clinics. streets 55:05. a d.c. firefighter is doing okay after an extensive two-alarm fire. wtop is reporting that the firefighter was evaluated on the scene of a house fire on gates road in northwest just off of connecticut avenue. fire crews found flames at the home under renovation. no one was home at the time. today police in fairfax county will get more training on decision making when it comes to the use of force in the community. officers will go through a series of mock real life scenarios they hmay face while n duty. the training has been developed over the last few years. you can learn more starting at the 4:00 right here on news 4. on the two eaglets born at the national arboretum need names. right now we're calling them d.c. 2 and d.c. 3. they were born to mr. president and f

go. we have video of that. and that four foreigners along with crew remain on the plane, still unclear if any of them are americans. officials saying that the hijacker ibrahim samaha said he was wearing an explosive belt when he owedhe ordered the plan land. but the motivation is over a personal matter, one that involves a woman. we are monitoring the situation closely and will bring you more later this hour. it is now 5:32. developing this morning, new questions are being raised this morning about how far police will go to get information. this follows news that the fbi was able to crack the iphone of san bernardino shooter syed farook. the agency did not need apple's help after all. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with what is next in the security fight. >> reporter: good morning. what is next is trying to crack the information that was on

they got the info based on a tip that came in and the fbi isn't saying who tipped them off, but a it tip that they could break into that phone and get the unlock code without getting apple to write a special code software to do so. apple fought the case in court saying that it was a dangerous precedent for your phone, high pho my phone and everyone else's p but now the government says they will drop the case because they don't need apple's help. what that does that do is settle the basic constitutional question, can the government force a private tech firm to comply and help them break into a phone if it's a matter in this case as they argued of national security. and so while the question remains, it looks like they have been able to get the information off the phone without damaging it. it's encrypted on the fbi, it will take them time to find out exactly what pore information i there and whether

were involved. another live look at the capitol building where the visitor's center is expected to open on time at 8:30. this is a much calmer scene than we saw yesterday after a shooting inside the visitor's center. this cellphone video shows the moments of panic following the shooting. a capitol police officer shot a suspect who pointed a pellet gun at him at a security checkpoint. the suspect is identified as 66-year-old larry dawson of antioch, tennessee. >> and as you saw, the capitol building was filled with tourists and workers when the shooting happened. the entire complex was immediately placed on lockdown and visitors in the middle of their tours were told to shelter in place. >> then we all got nervous. we were there for maybe half an hour. they just told us that there is a shooting and the suspe

custody, but we're safe and there is a shelter in place. >> more than 2 million people visit the u.s. capitol every year. this morning d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton is praising the capitol police to their response. she was unable to teach a seminar yesterday because of the lockdown. in a statement she said i fully appreciate the precautions that needed to be taken. the capitol police clearly showed they were prepared. it was first class policing. and capital police chief has only been on the road about two weeks now. the news 4 iteam talked to him last week about the evolving threat against the capitol complex. an iteam investigation found capitol police responded to more than 2500 people suspicious package calls in the last two years. they stopped at least 13 people from carrying guns on or near capitol grounds since 2012. at the same time, there are concerns about upcoming officer retirements. and there are new calls to increase funding for capitol police by morning $30 milon

relieve overcrowding at dulles south and make the schools run more efficiently, but one of plans being considered, plan 12, has raised some controversy. people who don't like it say that it consencentrates low inc students in two downtown schools leaving others less diverse. but others say it's not about e ethnicity, it's about location andity versity still exists. and they also cite the state code which says the schools could be more efficient, and what could be more efficient than having students be able to walk to school. later today, the school board will consider plan 12 among three or four other options for redistricting. but the naacp plans to be here to protest against plan 12 when the meeting happens at 6:30 here in loudoun county.

caught on vasurveillance video. wtop reporting that a firefighter was evaluated on the scene of a house fire on gates road in northwest last night. the fire broke out around 7:00. fire crews say the home was under veneration and no one was there. new court documents say a reston than who is the chief suspect in a nearly deadly fire is already in jail for a string of other crimes. antoine green is implicated in the arson on n. reston back in december. prosecutors say he purposely set the fire that nearly killedis his former landlord. and one day before that crime, he forced his way into a 67-year-old woman's home. documents say he and accomplice tied up the one and stole her car. green is currently in jail facing charges ranging from strangulation to malicious

requires women getting an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy to get anesthesia did during the procedure. the bill is based on the premise that a fetus can feel pain at that point. not everyone believes this is true. and doctors are worried the anesthesia could cause issues for the mother. some backlash from some tv and film companies may have changed the course of one controversial law in south carolina. -- in the south, i should say. the governor of georgia now saying he plans to veto a bill that would give businesses the right to deny service to gay and lesbian customers based on religious belief. com cocast which owns nbc 4 was among several companies that said they would stop prince george's counties if the governor didn't veto the bill. >> i do not think that we have to discriminate against anyone to protect the faith-based community in georgia.
