drive. >> we're in the air with chopper 4, the crews arrived on the scene a couple of hours ago, found smoke and fire pouring out of the house, even they called in more firefighters, the flames continued to spread. so far, no reports of injuries. we've got a crew on the ground now and will update you as soon as we learn more. more breaking news from the national mall. wendy rieger has details at the live desk. >> the washington monument is closed after yet another breakdown of the elevator. the national park service says the elevator is stuck about 280 feet up the monument. these are live pictures. there have been about 15 and 20 people, there were about 15 to 20 people on the elevator when it stopped. they were able to get off. now they have to walk down the stairs. there is also about 25 people at the top. on the observation desk. they are also making their way slowly down all those stairs. engineers are at the monument now, trying to fix

shomari stone is headed to the mall to see what he can learn. there's another security scare on capitol hill, a day after police shot a man at the capitol visitors center. >> minutes after the center reopened to tourists this morning, two suspicious packages turned up on the grounds, visitors were kept away and streets closed while police cleared and checked the unattended bags. >> we're line onle hill tonight looking at yet another security situation. darcy? >> well that's right. things are pretty much back to normal here on capitol hill. there were a couple of questions, some threats this morning, they thought there were two backpacks, as it turns out everything has been deemed safe. the suspect charged in with yesterday's gun incident remains in the hospital at this hour. now, lots of tourists turned out today for the reopening of the capitol visitor center, they told us they felt safe because of all the security and the law

that suspect, larry dawson, is a 66-year-old minister from tennessee. he is now accused of walking into the visitors center, aiming a gun and officers. he was shot and wounded. it was a pull et gellet gun tha aimed, but it looked like the real thing. he's facing charges including assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed. we spoke to a four director who saudi the police did a good job protecting everyone yesterday. >> i've been coming here for, since about 1980, with school groups and i feel totally confident. you can't live in a bubble and you know, it's, it's where it's all at. our federal government. as good as it gets. >> coming up on news4 at 5:00 you're going to hear from a woman who was supposed to be in line at the very time that this shooting happened. she explains why she and her

on the suspect. including why he was turned down for a funeral director's license. back in 2014. pat, back to you. >> darcy spencer, thank you. donald trump is defending his campaign manager in the wake of that new battery charge against him. here is the newly released video of the incident in question. where a reporter accused corey lewandowski of grabbing and pulling on her arm during a campaign event this month. the reporter pressed charges. lewandowski turned himself in to police in florida this morning. the trump campaign denies any wrongdoing on his part. and in his latest tweet this afternoon, donald trump questioned the reporter's story and called lewandowski, who you see here on the left, quote, very decent man. trump's primary republican opponent just picked up a key endorsement in wisconsin. with the primary a week away, governor scott walker endorsed senator ted cruz.

aka mo. charged as an adult in the murder of 15-year-old devontae washington. davonte shot and killed last saturday afternoon on the deanwood metro platform. he was with his mother and two younger sisters, when it happened. they witnessed the shooting. victor leonard is davonte's grandfather. >> it's what, what could this person be thinking? to see two kids there and a mother. and to still take a person's life? >> the shooting was caught on tape by metro security cameras. and police compared pictures of the shooting suspect to a database of juvenile offenders. that's what led them to bellamy. >> there is noplace on our public transportation system and metro that you cannot go and be caught on camera

in bechthesda. firefighters got everyone out of the home safely and no one was injured. we're learning more about a man who jumped in front of a train in maryland and killed himself. he was wanted in connection with three shootings in two counties. and tracee wilkins is uncovering some new information at the suspect's home in greenbelt. >> police confirm that 52-year-old jacinto delprado came to this apartment complex on sunday and shot a woman who he was involved with. she survived. but earlier in the day, he shot two other men, one man from florida, was killed. another man from baltimore was injured. they were both truck drivers and according to howard county police, had no relationship with del prado. this is a very unusual murder case, it all ends in suicide when del prado takes his life on train tracks yesterday morning in lanham. i'm tracee wilkins, coming up at 5:00, what police believe sparked all of this. there

ms-181, head prd alexandria to cairo, egypt, was hijacked to larnaca cypress overnight. the hijacker claiming to have an explosive belt. most passengers, women and children were allowed to get off the plane. leaving the hijacker, plane crew and one security officer and three british passengers on board. eight americans originally on the flight according to egypt's civil aviation. the motive for the hijacking? personal. the cypriot president ruled out terrorism. all to do with a woman, he said. adding the hijacker is not a terrorist, but an idiot. the cypress ministry of foreign affairs named the hijacker as seif mustafa. his estranged wife is apparently from cyprus and the hijacker asked to speak with her. then he asked for asylum. the official goes on to say, it

at the surveillance video that police in florida obtained after a reporter accused lewandowski of battery. steve handelsman is live on capitol hill with the latest. what are you hearing? >> first of all i think the headline is donald trump is not only not going to fire his campaign manager. not going to suspend him. but he's standing with him big-time and not saying what almost every other politician would say when a very senior aide is charged with a criminal offense to say well let's see what comes out. no. this is donald trump. he says i stay with people. that's why i'm winning. and he says that corey lewandowski, who is charged with grabbing michelle fields and pulling her away from trump, was trying to protect trump, trump says, because fields was trying to go after trump. so that's the trump stint. opponents of trump couldn't be more pleased. they say this is more proof that trump is building an organization that, that leads to violence from the top down. >> he's one of donald trump's few trusted top aides.
