we do have breaking news for you right now on "news4 midday," a stabbing at metro. i'm barbara harrison. >> and i'm erika gonzalez. let's get to prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins at the scene. >> reporter: what we're told is that someone was stabbed here at the addison road metro station. it happened shortly after 9:00 a.m. this morning. let's take you right to the video to show you what it looked like just a little while ago as investigators continue their investigation into exactly what unfolded here. we're told by metro's spokesman that it appears that someone who was handing out the "washington post express" paper stabbed a

now, they are not sure exactly why this happened. they say that there was some kind of an altercation that ended with the 24-year-old being stabbed. now, he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. he is now in stable condition. and metro transit police and prince george's county police are searching for this "washington post express" worker who was here handing out newspapers, is regularly here at the metro station -- [ inaudible ] exactly what happened here. they know who they're looking for, and now they just have to find him. reporting live, i'm tracee wilkins. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you, tracee. we can hear the wind blowing in prince george's county. chuck, what can we expect from our weather today? >> sounds a lot worse than it is, but ferocious southerly breezes averaging 20 to 30 miles per hour are ushering in noticeably milder air. still all dry around the washington area. there are a couple light rain showers out here in the mountains of west virginia. we h

"o," 6th. everything is a jumble right now. a number of high-security individuals here in the area. we're going to try to get back to megan mcgrath as soon as we have a better picture to offer you right here on "news4 midday." i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. right now here's what's happening inside the nuclear security summit there in northwest. we have video of president obama's motorcade arriving just a short time ago. the president, of course, is playing host. he's now inside the convention center meeting with japan's prime minister and south korea's president. they're talking about recent nuclear threats by north korea, which is now accusing the u.s. of driving the region to the brink of war, they say, after joint annual military drills staged by america and the country's bitter rival, south korea. now, this afternoon, mr. obama will meet with the presidents of france and china, then attend a dinner with the heads of nuclear security of the nuclear security summit, i should say. vice president joe biden will also join mr. obama for that dinner meeting, which they will host at theh

in town, delegates from 36 countries and international groups. barbara? >> thank, melissa. as we said, this is probably going to affect your commute or anybody trying to get around down in that area. you can find the list of all the closures and some detours that you can use on the nbc washington app. thank you, barbara. a developing story this morning. police are investigating a shooting in southeast washington. we are working to find out more. what we do know is that police were called to the area of good hope road and alabama avenue around 5:00 this morning. we brought that to you at the live desk this morning on "news4 toda today". that's where they found a man with a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital. right now there is no word on a suspect or even a motive in this case. and a person is in jail right now after leading fairfax county police on a pursuit this morning. this happened around 6:00 in the morning on chain bridge road. you've got chopper 4 over the scene there this morning. police tell us officers tried to pull a car

refused to stop. police say they followed the car along route 29 until they were able to make the driver stop. we're working to find out the reason for the initial traffic stop and why the driver didn't want to stop. a man is accused of trying to kidnap a 6-year-old girl from her front yard in wheaton. police say 20-year-old kabir salami grabbed the girl while she was playing in the yard on monterrey drive. this happened on tuesday. her mom managed to get between salami and the front gauge. the girl broke free and salami ran off. police say he came back a few minutes later, though. officers eventually arrested him on viers mill road. he's charged with kidnapping and assault and is being held without bond. the latest now in decision 2016. there could be some impending ballot trouble for bernie sanders. the democratic presidential candidate could have issues getting on to d.c.'s june primary ballot. news4's tom sherwood broke this story on twitter wednesday.

democratic party missed a deadline to notify the board of elections that sanders and hillary clinton had paid their registration fees. well, now a democratic voter in the district has filed a challenge to keep sanders off the ballot. the rules require a hearing on that challenge. an emergency d.c. council vote may be able to resolve the issue before the primary on june 14th. donald trump has created yet another firestorm on the campaign trail. the gop front-runner told msnbc's chris matthews that if abortion was banned, a woman getting the procedure should be punished. >> the answer is that there has to be some form of punishment. >> for the woman? >> yeah, there has to be some form. >> that comment was widely denounced by democrats and republicans. just hours after his remarks, trump made an about-face

i want to give you a live look from our vdot camera this morning. this is 16th street in northwest d.c. d.c. officials say they are working hard to patch potholes across the city. i'm sure you have driven by a few. countless for me. the countdown is on to the potholepalooza, so i want to give you four things you need to know. >> number one, in january, crews across the area filled more than 2,000 potholes. last month, more than 10,000 potholes were repaired. and so far in march, more than 11,000 potholes have been

we were huddled right in here. we were just all balled up in a ball here and praying. >> that pastor saying nobody at his church walked away with even a scratch on them, even though a tornado ripped off the roof while they were all inside. >> want to show you the damage inside the church in oklahoma. pews, book shelves smashed, cinder blocks scattered on the floor. the church had just been renovated, as a matter of fact, and it's going to be several thousand dollars of repairs. meanwhile, a different kind of storm, but just as severe. heavy rains caused huge flooding in arkansas around little rock. three people had to be pulled away from the water by rescuers. their car washed off a bridge. in ot

today the family of montgomery county officer noah liotta will tell lawmakers to pass the strongest version of noah's law. the law expands the use of ignition interlock devices for convicted drunk drivers. it was named after liotta, who was killed by asp

driver back in december. both the maryland senate and house have passed different versions of this bill. now they need to work out their differences before a final vote can be taken. a new lawsuit has been filed against a school aide accused of sexually abusing children in prince george's county. de'onte carway is a former school volunteer and choir director. as the suit claims, he took one of his choir members behind a stage and forced the young girl to engage in a sexual act with another student. the suit alleged that caroway recorded it on his cell phone and threatened to kill her if she told anybody. he's facing 13 federal charges of exploiting up to 11 children, and he also faces state child sex abuse charges. we are learning that students in loudoun county rode a school bus with explosive training material on board. a worker found the material yesterday. a federal agency used the bus in an exercise at briarwood's high school. on monday and tuesday, the bus was also

rockridge high, buffalo trail elementary and pine brook elementary. the school district is trying to contact parents but say the material is benign and the students were in no danger. developing this morning, we are learning more about a local woman who was pregnant and infected with the zika virus. her case may now help researchers, though, understand more about this virus. these ultrasound images show the effects zika had on the fetus. doctors at children's national medical center in d.c. say a 33-year-old woman caught the mosquito-transmitted virus after traveling to mexico and central america. she was 11 weeks pregnant at the time, but they say early ultrasounds didn't show any tell tale signs of birth defects. >> it was clear that there was significant impairment of development in some of the major structures of the brain and evidence of injury. >> but at

fetus had severe brain abnormalities. the woman decided to terminate the pregnancy. researchers hope, though, it may answer some questions about the link between zika and birth defects. the circus is in town, did you know that? >> exciting times. >> it's something that's been a staple in the show for more than a century is coming to a close. >> that's right. this is the last time the ringling brothers' elephants will be in the district before they move to a conservation center. news4's kristen wright is live at the verizon center with details on why the circus is retiring them. kristen? >> reporter: yeah, you know, first off, i'd like you to meet someone right away. this is asia, okay? she has been with the circus, no kidding, for 26 years, and she is 48 years old, one of the oldest -- or the oldest in the show tonight here at the verizon center. >> that's right. she is a veteran of the greatest show on earth. >> reporter: she certainly is. and you call her a diva. this is ryan henney. he is with the

time. she's a leader, right, on the floor, so to speak. >> that's right. i'm the assistant elephant manager here at ringling brothers barnum and bailey circus. asia weighs 8,000 pounds, she is 48 years old and literally is one of the biggest divas here at the greatest show on earth. she's the leader, she's the most independent. as you can see, she's a diva. >> reporter: and you know, the circus is, of course, ending having elephants in the shows. and you mentioned that that's bittersweet. why is it bittersweet and why was the decision made? >> it is bittersweet because they've been a part of the greatest show on earth for 146 years. but we're excited about the transition. this transition's really going to allow us to focus on our conservation efforts and linking these guys to, hopefully, one day finding a third treatment for cancer. they're all going to be relocated down to our center for elephant conservation in may of this year. there's only about five weeks left. they're going to transition down there and live at our center for elephant conservation, where our herd of 41 asian elephants will reside. so, we're excited for the transition, but i

but if you get home from work and school and feel like cooking outside, you can probably get away with that. what about the weekend? well, the cold is not done with us yet. the weekend will be starting out and ending very windy and turning much colder. a risk of some showers on saturday morning and then very windy with temperatures falling on the day sunday. so, saturday cloudy skies in the morning with a risk of a couple of showers. we should be able to get some clearing by saturday afternoon, but it will be breezy, temperatures back down near average, in the low 60s. sunday is when you're really going to start to notice the cold. high temperatures on sunday only in the low 50s, windy and much, much colder. that pattern, the cold, breezy pattern, that will carry out of the weekend and on into next week. so, enjoy the 70s today and we'll be near 80 degrees tomorrow. i'll give you the full seven-day coming up later on in the show, and we'll take another look at storm team 4 radar, let you know where the rain drops are. >> it is, but don't put away our coats yet. >> no, no, no. >> all right. world champions take on a new fight, this time off the

right on the west virginia border. these are tracking off to the north, so there will be a slightly better chance for a few isolated showers here during the mid to late afternoon hours in the shenandoah valley. the bulk of the rain, though, is still well back to our west. it will be arriving here during the evening hours, so any time after about 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tonight, rain chances really start to go up. we're in the mid-to-upper 60s now. it will remain a mild day. temperatures will get up into the 70s today, probably mid-70s around most of the metro area, but again, under an increasing number of clouds and an increasing chance for showers coming in. so, weather impacts on your plans? travel, no big issues. exercise, it will be warm and breezy. and out and about this evening, may need the umbrella, especially after the sun goes down. >> all right, thank you, sir. the u.s. women's soccer team has filed a complaint with the equal employment opportunity commission claiming they should be paid the same as the men's national soccer team. >> we've proven our worth over the years, you know, just coming

pay disparity between the men and women is just too large, and we want to continue to fight. >> according to the complaint, the women are paid between $3,600 to $5,000 per game. compare that to male soccer players who make between $6,000 and $17,000 per game. at least they make the world cup, female soccer players receive 44% of what their male counterparts make. the u.s. soccer federation issued a statement saying it was disappointed in the filing of the complaint. and erica, from the field to the workplace, there is also a big gender gap. the american association of university women looked at leadership jobs in the u.s. they found 75% of u.s. legislators are men. 44 u.s. governors are men. and only six are women. a group of women leaders gathered at the newseum to discuss these

right now we've got some big closures and traffic trouble all around the washington convention center. all these streets you see in red are closed for the nuclear securities summit. the metro station there is also closed. we'll have more on the changes around there in just a moment. first, a big update on the brussels airport. the airport says it's ready to reopen following last week's suicide bombings, but airport officials are still waiting for approval from the belgian government. this is what they had to fix. take a look at these new photos from inside the airport. we're told there will not be any flights tomorrow, but the airport could begin partial operations by this weekend. more than 30 people were killed in the bombings at the airport and in the brussels metro system. we're learning more about who isis was targeting. a belgian government official says images of the belgian prime minister's office and his h

bomber's computers. yesterday we learned another american, texas native gail martinez, was killed in the attacks. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. an extradition hearing is under way for the prime suspect in the paris attacks last november. a lawyer for salah abdeslam says his client wants to cooperate with french authorities and wants to be transferred to france from his prison where he is now in belgium. he was arrested march 18th, accused of helping to plan and execute the attacks in paris that killed 130 people. the court now has 24 hours to make a decision. barbara? >> thanks, melissa. turning to our forecast now, windy out there, oh, and getting windier, it seems! let's get the update from storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell at the weather desk. hey, chuck. >> indeed. it's a breezy but oh so mild day to be outside today. increasing clouds but temperatures are near 70 out on the weather deck this afternoon. your seven-day forecast says to

weather, indeed. temperatures will be in the 70s today, near 80 degrees tomorrow. there will be a pretty good chance of showers tomorrow, both in the morning and again tomorrow afternoon, but the whole day will not be lost to the rain. rain showers may linger into the front part of the saturday morning time frame. saturday night and sunday will be dry but windy and much, much colder, as chilly weather returns into early next week. tuesday, a cold rain coming, temperatures in the 40s. couldn't even rule out snowflakes in the mountains of western virginia or northern and western maryland. out here, the lawn is green except for these dandelions. $1 a weed. >> don't quit your day job, chuck! all right. thank you so much, chuck. meanwhile, back here in town, the nuclear security summit means that some headaches for drivers who live, who work in the district. if you thought traffic was already bad, now roads around the convention center are shut down. news4's megan mcgrath shows u

[ sirens ] >> reporter: flashing police lights, road blocks, even military vehicles are standing by. the nuclear security summit is under way, and the area around the convention center is now a secure zone. that means no cars -- >> turn left on 9th. >> reporter: -- and limited pedestrian access, made for a bit of confusion this morning. >> usually i go down, like straight down 9th street, but i've been advised it was closed off. i have to walk all the way back around here. >> reporter: the mt. vernon metro station is closed until friday night. trains drive straight through without stopping. leon mason had to use the gallery place station this morning. >> more time traveling. it inconvenienced me a lot, but it is what it is. i've got to do what i've got to do. >> reporter: streets all around the convention center, including massachusetts and new york avenues are closed. it made for a tough rush hour. and for people who live in the secure zone, it's even worse.

middle of the night, all the lights are keeping us up. middle of the night, you cannot walk around. we need i.d., which we understand. it's a great purpose, we understand it, but it's making it very difficult. you can't drive, you can't park, things like that. >> reporter: now, people are going to have to be patient just a little bit longer. the summit lasts two days. things should get back to normal by friday night. in northwest, megan mcgrath, news4. in decision 2016, the presidential candidates are aiming for wisconsin in advance of next week's primary. new poll numbers are out from marquette university law school. the gop poll has cruz ahead of trump, having cruz winning support of 40% of wisconsin republicans. donald trump has 30% support. john kasich has 21% support. for democrats, it's a tight race. poll numbers show bernie sanders with 44% support and hillary clinton just behind him with 43%

investigators say it was an attack causing trouble for thousands of patients treated at medstar hospitals in the washington area. it's the latest example in a string of such attacks on hospitals with hackers gaining control and then demanding big money to restore computer access. an example of the frustration, one woman says the hospital canceled three days of her husband's radiation treatments. >> there are people worse than my husband, and god love them, i hope they get it faster, get treatment somewhere. >> medstar says now its backup system is returning to normal and that overall patient care has not suffered, they say. coming up, a caretaker caught stealing. and

welcome back to "news4 midday." it is indeed a breezy day to be outside today. southerly winds, though, mean a big warm-up from where we've been the last few days. we should easily make it back into the low and mid-70s today. just a couple showers southern parts of the shenandoah now. bigger rain chances back across kentucky, ohio and tennessee. that's rain that looks to be arriving in the metro after 7:00 or 8:00 this evening. going to have some rumbles of thunder between 10:00, 11:00 tonight and early tomorrow morning. for now, though, we're all still dry under cloudy skies and breezy. 67 now at national airport. the rest of the afternoon, breezy, 72 at 2:00. a risk for showers, especially west sides of the metro by 6:00. everyone likely to be dealing with rain drops by about 10:00, 11:00 tonight. so, on the whole, not a bad way to look at the rest of the day, temperatures in the70

but again, don't get used to this mild weather. the cold stuff of early april is on the way back. >> all right. thank you, chuck. meanwhile, a guilty verdict for a man accused of elder abuse in montgomery county. want to show you this picture that shows jose bacon withdrawing some of the thousands of dollars that he is convicted of stealing from the woman who is almost 100 years old. bacon pretended to be a caretaker, but a good samaritan found unhealthy and dangerous living conditions inside the home of the elderly woman. charging documents state "the home was so cluttered that only one room was usable. there was cat feces in multiple places on the floors." bacon was banned from the victim's hospital room where he was stipreying on her fears of going to a nursing home. the victim is now living in an assisted care facility. in a few hours, a gospel great -- actually, in

it's pretty much shut down. another stabbing at a metro station. metro transit police say a "washington post" vendor stabbed a man at the addison road metro after they got into some kind of fight just a couple of hours ago. the man is in serious condition and police are looking for the vendor right now. police are investigating a shooting in southeast d.c. we're working to learn more, but here's what we do know. police were called to the area of good hope road and alabama avenue around 5:00 this morning where they found a man with a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital. right now there is no word on a suspect or even a motive in this case. we're working to learn more. okay, yes, spring training is over. no more games in florida. just a couple of exhibition games before the nationals play some games for real! >> they're going to actually be at nats park tomorrow and saturday to face the twins. and then the home opener is exactly one week from today, and that's when you know spring has arrived. eun will be at the park that
