for warmer spring days. you know, they even had some plants and trees blow over near the entrance because of all the wind we've been experiencing. so, yes, they are certainly ready for some warmer, real spring air to come through here. back to you. >> we hope so. thanks, kristin. developing right now. two people accused of stealing someone's car are now in d.c. police custody. police say the carjacking happened in silver spring. then officers chased the car to the intersection of minnesota avenue and benning road where it crashed. police closed the road for a while. they're still working to repair the traffic light the car hit. in fairfax county, a woman was stabbed this morning. she's recovering right now and is expected to survive. fairfax county police say the woman was walking on route 1 in alexandria when someone stabbed her shortly after midnight. it's not clear who the suspect is. it's a somber day in virginia as family, friends and colleagues say farewell to a fallen state trooper. the

under way in hampton. a procession and private burial will follow. last night many paid their respects. the father of two was killed last week at a bus station in gunman and fellow officers killed the gunman. the irs headquarters in downtown d.c. will be remain closed today after yesterday's fire. it won't affect your tax returns. the irs told workers to rework remotely after a transformer fire broke out monday afternoon in the basement. the building on constitution avenue is now without power. the irs says this won't impact those tax returns, the processing will go on. it happens in other facilities. all other area officers are open today. voters in wisconsin today could change the course of the presidential campaign. the polling precincts are open right now. 42 gop delegates,

dell ga delegates are up for grab. the polling gives bernie sanders and ted cruz slight leads in their races. get the results later tonight on our nbc washington app. also today the d.c. council plans to take an emergency vote on whether to allow sanders onto the democratic primary ballot. the d.c. democratic party filed paperwork late both for sanders and clinton. an activist questioned the legitimacy of bernie sanders' name on the ballot. today the council would clarify the party has a 24-hour grace period for handing in paperwork. if the majority of the council agrees, the matter goes to the mayor. thanks to a buzzer-beater thanks to an upper marlboro basketball star. >> gives it to jenkins for the championship! >> look at that. that's

right now, police in the district are investigating a homicide in northwest after a woman that was attacked last september died. now, the woman, 43-year-old medina michele thornton passed away on sunday. monday, the medical examiner ruled she died from complications from that attack back on september 19th. thornton was found in a home in the 300 block of delafield police. police are offering a $2500 reward for any information

the ntsb plans to conduct more interviews today to find out what caused an amtrak derailment in philadelphia. the train hit a backhoe on the tracks, but it's not clear why that backhoe was left there over the weekend. nbc's tom costello shows us what new data is revealing about the crash. >> reporter: this morning investigators want to know why amtrak maintenance equipment was sitting on two sets of tracks sunday morning as train 89 approached at 106 miles per hour, just under the posted limit of 110. >> we're still gathering facts on that information as to who had the authority to be on that track. >> reporter: the train slammed into a backhoe, killing two amtrak workers with decades of experience. later today they plan to investigate other members of the work crew. among the questions, did miscommunication play into their role? investigators in washington have now reviewed the train's black boxend

year. we'll be live at the ballpark for the nationals home opener on thursday. starting this fall, you'll be able to watch thursday night nfl games on twitter. twitter won a deal to broadcast the games online. the nfl signed a multiyear agreement with twitter to deliver video and other content to fans on a daily basis. yahoo! was the first to stream an nfl game online for free last year. the games will still be shown on tv, of course. walmart is apologizing for this picture put on a t-shirt. it made a lot of maryland fans red with anger. the t-shirt has a maryland logos but on the state of massachusetts. walmart first defended them online at first but now pulled them from the shelves. the company said, quote, we're so embarrassed, we may never stick our head out of our shell again. it was 70 degrees yesterday and now we're tain

there will be no federal help coming to virginia to clean up autopsy the tornadoes. the governor just got word fema denied his request. four people died. fema says the damage from the tornadoes was not beyond what the commonwealth can pay for. virginia's state coordinator says his office will submit an appeal. well, talking about our weather and the cold, tom, any warmer right now and how much colder are we going to get? >> dress for a winter-like day. looks can be deceiving. looks like a nice, sprik day but it's feeling more like winter. you need a warm hat, gloves

cholesterol and heart disease may come with serious side effects. 25 million americans take the drugs known as statins. some patients say the side effects of muscle weakness, cramping is too much. some thought the complaints might be psychosomatic, all in their heads. >> reporter: most of the most popular drugs in the country are statin, taken by about 25 million americans to lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease. but they can also cause debilitating side effects, muscle pain, weakness and camping. reported by 5% to 20% of patients. diane was one of them. >> everything was sore and every time i moved, i'd get this -- more an achy, a bad, achy feeling. >> reporter: for years, some doctors thought these complaints might be psychosomatic, all in their heads. a new study concludes the pain

>> this now confirms for the first time that muscle intolerance to statins is a real problem affecting a significant portion of patients and that those patients now we need to develop alternatives to treat them. >> reporter: the good news is, there is potential relief. >> the drug has been approved. >> reporter: already two cholesterol-lowering drugs have been approved by the fda. one repatha cuts levels of bad cholesterol by half. diane says the medication changed her life. >> it does the same thing, but it doesn't have the side effects the statins have. >> reporter: but the bad news is, they're expensive. about $14,000 a year. and only fda-approved for people with hereditary high cholesterol. the question now is whether the fda will approve them for a wider group of patients to cut their cholesterol and their pain.

all these hearts that are broken, heavenly father, we ask you touch us right now, lord. >> the people gathered at a park last night to remember christina fish fisher, the mother of three shot and killed in her home. her daughter was in the home. she called 911. she was allegedly killed by derek lewis, ex-boyfriend and father of her two sons. court records show she had gotten two protective orders to keep him away from her and her children. the message, if you know someone in a vie rent relationship, step in. >> the people that are around them, it's okay to step in sometimes. >> there were also prayers last night for lewis' sons, now left without a mother and a father who could go to prison for life if convicted for a murder. this was an incredible turn-around for a 14-year-old girl who was pronounced dead after a mass shooting.

seeing-eye guide for the blind. it has an app that can interpret what's on someone else's feed. it's using artificial intelligence being able to recognize faces and objects. you might hear description of only around a vocabulary of 100 words. it may say a photo of the person smiling, but not as specific as if they're holding drinks in their hands. facebook is trying to be careful as not to offend anyone. keeping your children safe while playing sports, that's what the creators of a brand-new app say was the main reason they developed it. the app is called the s.t.a.c. con krugs app. it includes a list of concussion symptoms you can check, rank and follow up on based on how serious they are. one of the most important uses checking on a child who plays sports.

a shoddy mom, which is someone who doesn't take everything so seriously. you're able to laugh at the less than perfect parent. spring allows us, spring clean, for instance, it's a perfect time for us to lose our children's toys and all that whatnot they just let collect in their rooms, the living room and everywhere else in the house. find a way while vacuuming to displace those into a corner, under a dresser, under carpets. find ways they get lost and six months when they're not looking, they forget they even had that toy or fuzzy animal. you kind of get rid of it. >> that's not a bad idea. >> absolutely. >> what do you think is the toughest part about being a working mom. >> i think the toughest part about it, especially at the beginning, you want to try to be so perfect because you're so perfect in your job.
