morning. we just got an update from police here. about 30 minutes ago. the alleged victim is the sheriff's wife. she called 911 and told officers at their pasadena home that their husband, sheriff robert bait man, assaulted her. officers also noticed injuries to her face described as minor and damage to an exterior door and then arrested the sheriff about 7:30 sunday evening. >> minor abrasions, scrapes, bumps, bruises, i would say, with some swelling. are we sad about the incident? of course, we are. it's been very important to us as a police department that we did the right thing for

right reasons at the right moment in this incident. >> reporter: back here live at the police department. sheriff bateman was arrested without incident charged with second degree assault which is a misdemeanor and has been released on his own personal recognizance, his weapons and credentials taken. he has denied any wrongdoing. still uncertain what his status is, of course. he's an elected official. not sure whether he's on paid or unpaid leave pending the outcome of this investigation. the police chief, of course, careful to say that his office is taking great steps to handle this investigation very carefully since, of course, sheriff bateman has a very long history in this county, elected in '06 but has been in law enforcement for a very long time in this county. that is the latest live. back to you. a man is in the hospital after an

shooting in laurel. police responded to the indus food market on fourth street just before midnight of reports of a burglary. a 15-year-old was caught running out of that store and was quickly arrested. he's been released to his mother now. when police entered the market, there was a problem with a second suspect and police shot a 20-year-old man. he is in the hospital in stable condition. this morning the 17-year veteran who fired his gun is on routine administrative leave. maryland state lawmakers are running out of time to pass a drunk driving law named after noah leona. noah's law is under debate after it passed the house and senate. they are trying to decide on two different versions. the law would require interlock devices for drunk drivers. >> please stand up, fight for yo

community to make sure the law gets passed, that these unnecessary provisions are dealt with next year and not part of noah's law. >> leona was killed by a suspended drunk driver in december. his family wants a version of the law to pass. they said they would sign it as soon as it got to the mayor's desk. there are some key bills we are watching, a major criminal justice bill that reduces prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders needs a vote in the house and the senate. a police reform bill that changes how police are hired and trained is still in committee. and a measure that helps close the gender pay gap is waiting for the governor's signature. there is a new push to protect your cars in a place where people keep vandalizing them. jeremy pike wants the state to pay for security cameras at the horner road community lot in woodbridge. we told you every time cars

a man was arrested for breaking into a five guys restaurant to make a hamburger. they are now looking for this man. the thief followed a delivery guy into that five guys at urban street in columbia heights on friday morning. he waited for the delivery man to leave and thep startn starte cooking. you can also see the man was on the phone while he made that burger. he left the restaurant with that burger and a bottle of water. no cash. some details about what led up to a shooting that left former nfl player will smith dead. he was shot and killed in an apparent road rage incident in new orleans over the weekend. >> this morning police are trying to figure out if revenge may have played a role in the shooting. nbc's gabe gutierrez has more on the possible connection between smith and the shooter. >> the

welcome back to news4 midday. we're keeping an eye on several developing stories at this hour. first a sheriff accused of assaulting his wife. an anne arundel sheriff was arrested at his house. his wife said he hurt her. he denies any wrongdoing but he is on leave now. a man was shot in an officer-involved shooting during an attempted burglary. it

market last night. the man is in stable condition and the officer has been placed on administrative leave. maryland lawmakers have a lot to finish before the day is done. it's the final day before the state's legislative session and several key bills need votes. those bills include police reform, expanding drunk driving measures and a proposal to reduce sentences for non-violent drug dealers. right now you will want to pay attention to what lane you're driving in if your travels take you through northwest d.c. kristin wright tells us how police will be enforcing the new bus lane rules along georgia avenue. >> reporter: if you're caught driving in the bus lane, the fine is $200. it looks like a lot of people may not even be aware of this change just yet. they're still driving through the bus lane. here's what you need to know. the new bus lanes are on georgia avenue and barry place northwest

the lanes are clearly marked "bus only." this is supposed to help transit buses, tour buses, charter bu s buses, school buses and cabs. you cannot drive or park in the bus lane. the only time you can drive in it is if you're just about to make a turn. you can enter the bus lane about 40 feet before that turn. the lanes will not be enforced on sundays. later this spring, ddot is going to put down more paint to make it stand out more. kristin wright, news4. extending the 395 express lines for the d.c. line will likely shorten your drive to work. a meeting starts at 6:30 in arlington. the project will extend the 395

$2.00. west virginia is averaging $2.01 a gallon. let's go back to headquarters and a press conference. we expect some of the command staff here. >> the victim was walking home from dinner with her parents when she was struck by a stray bullet. as i understand, the victim right now is in fair and stable condition. the gun recovery unit has been working 24/7 as well as our detectives trying to get to the bottom of this case. we've been in the area knocking on doors and recanvassing for additional information. there's been police visibility in the area, and we want to thank the community so far that's come forward with tips and information on this case. if you have any information regarding the offense or the individuals that may be connected, we ask that you call us on 727-9099. a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered in the case. additionally, i'd like to add

4:00 p.m., mayor bowser and members of the metropolitan police department will be back in the community gathering evidence and trying to get information on the case. like i said, the community walk begins around 4:00 and i can answer any questions that you have at this time. heroic, the things they did to save her life. [ inaudible question ] >> there is no indication that they were the targets whatsoever. it looks like a family that was caught up. an incident occurred within close proximity to the family where gunshots were fired, so you had some brazen violent offenders with probably illegal firearms involved in an altercation. and as a result we had a young girl that was struck. very, very serious injury. [ inaudible questi ] >> it appears we had some shots that were fired during an altercation in the neighborhood, and one of the stray bullets ended up striking this little girl. >> where was the altercation? >> we don't want to give that information out right now because it could impact the investigation. i can tell you this, the community has been awesome so far in coming forth with details on this case, and we expect y'

[ inaudible question ] >> the father immediately started to -- i don't know if he has any medical background, but the father immediately assisted her with stopping bleeding on the wound. if you can imagine, and i know we all hate to imagine that, any of us that have children, to be in that situation, for him to act the way that he did under that type of pressure, like i said, it's amazing, it's remarkable, and it's very heroic. in all likelihood, he saved her life. >> you've been watching a news conference from the d.c. police department updating us on the shooting of a child. you may remember, this happened late friday night in southeast d.c., and the police leadership here telling us this is a seven-year-old that was hit by a stray bullet. >> that's right. she apparently survived because of the efforts of her parents, we're just hearing. this happened on knox place in southeast d.c. at 9:30 on friday evening. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you more as it comes

i'm angie goss here at the live desk with a story that's unfolding right outside our nation's capitol. what you're looking at here is a group democracy rally. they are staging a sit-in right now. thousands arrived after a 10-day, 140-mile march from philadelphia's liberty bell with plans to occupy this capitol. at the heart of their protests, ending corruption and big money politics making for fair elections. many of these protesters outside the capitol right now are willi willing. right now attorneys are debating who will make up the jury in one of the most heartbreaking cases in 2013. you might recall ross harris is accused of leaving his 22-month-d

seat. the little boy died while harris was at work. harris faces murder charges. jury selection could take weeks because most people know about this case already. talk about a lucky dog. meet toby. >> toby! >> toby, the sheepdog, is alive and walking after falling more than 300 feet down a rocky cliff. toby and his family were hiking around washington county, utah when his owners say he saw something, went after it and chased it off a cliff. it's not something rescuers usually do, but they came out to help when the family called 911 thursday. toby had some head injuries, he's now with his family at home, and he's recovering. it looks like pretty well. today is the perfect day to show off your own pet. we'll tell you how and why. plus, we told you about the big week ahead for the caps. there is also a lot going on for caps fans.

unconscious. at this point he was taken to a nearby hospital. the orange line which services this station, no trains are stopping here at the station, the trains are continuing through. you can see there are police officers here from metro. as you may recall, of this the scene of a murder on the saturday before 15-year-old avonte washington was on the platform and was hit with his mother and two younger sisters when he was shot in the chest for no apparent reason at all. a 17-year-old, a man by the name of maurice bellamy, was charged as an adult in that murder. so here we have a scene of violence again at the deanwood metro station. it happened a short time ago. it happened down in the station area. we're told a young man was stabbed there and

choreographer weber joins us with what is being called exciting, master choreography. how many years have you been artistic director of the washington ballet? >> 17 years, and in my

season we choreographed this same show. it's nice to bring it back. >> you're going to be leaving the ballet, but first let's talk about this. what is it about? >> the score is the most bombastic choreal scores ever done. it's a manuscript that they found in a german lobby in the 1900s. at first they thought it was really just chance. >> it sounds like church music, religious music. >> it turns out to be drinking songs. it's songs about love and lust and drinking and springtime and the cycle of life. >> and the dance goes along with that side of the music, the bawdy side? >> it's both religious and bawdy. when i was creating the work, the music was so big, and i was a young choreographer and

music. what do you do with the misbalanmicymbal clash? i get t you lift the girl. it's about sensitivity and love and lust. >> i want to talk about the costum costumes. these are from the designer who did "alice in wonderland." >> i worked with her on many projects. just an outlandish, creative designer. she and i have done about ten projects together including "alice in wonderland," "the legend of sleepy hollow." essentially it starts in medieval times and works itself to the present. she starts with medieval monks and works to the renaissance to the baroque period to the 19th century to the 21st

to do so, it kind of creates a story about the human journey, which is really a human story. >> this is kind of a swan song for you as you're leaving your post of the artistic director of the ballet. what now for you? >> well, after 17 years, i've had an amazing time. we've grown the washington ballet so much. our annual budget quad rupe he would, just the impact on the city has been so great. after 17 years of partnership with lots of amazing people to build the ballet as a company, as a community engagement, organizations, a school, it just seems right to pass the baton on. i'll still be living in washington, d.c., but i'll be focusing on being a choreographer full-time. i'll be working all around the world, in australia and istanbul and capetown. >> come home to washington every now and then. this opens wednesday, right? >> it opens wednesday through sunday at in

sounds like we're head sbed into some nicer weather. >> we need to get some sunshine. toward the end of this week, wednesday, thursday, friday, we'll definitely see full sunshine. we have a cloud cover, especially here in d.c. right now. definitely breezy out there. e
