freeing of slaves. many advocates argue they pay federal taxes but lack a vote in congress. i want to show you a live look at the national cathedral where the second phase of the work kicks off today. a giant crane took stones off to prepare it for new pinnacles. the new phase is expected to take a decade and it will cost $20 million. the cathedral faced damage after it was struck by an earthquake in 2011. the washington convention center is going to be packed with all kinds of neat gadgets and experiments this weekend. it's the science and engineering festival. molette green is live at the convention center and has a preview for us. good morning. >> reporter: barbara, i'm surrounded by some cool kids and some cool robots in the vast wo

it happened in an instant and it has now led to years of repair for a popular landmark. "news4's" megan mgrath joins us where the second phase of repairs are getting under way. megan, you're down on the ground today. >> reporter: that's right, barbara. yesterday we were up on that scaffolding you see behind me here high above the roof of the national cathedral taking a look at some of those damaged pinnacles, pinnacles that were damaged in that earthquake that happened back in 2011. today, though, they're moving on to a different phase, and they've actually begun the work here and it it involves that large crane you see behind me. just a little while ago they started that process of lowering the damaged pinnacles, getting them down off of the north tower. take a look at the video. this is one of the pieces being

a half ago. a very, very difficult job. these stones are extremely heavy. anywhere from 400 pounds to nearly 3,000 pounds. that's why they had to bring in this large crane. many of them were damaged. they're wiggling. they're loose, they're a danger as a result of the damage done to that cathedral in that quake and so they had to do the repairs. we're told it's going to take ten years to do. that's because it's a very labor intensive process. a lot of the work needs to be done by hand. >> hand krafted building. it's all stone built on stone and you can't buy these pieces off a shelf at home depot. they're hand carved and hand put in place and they're at seriously heavy high heights. so it's not something you can lift off and put in a back pack and carry down a scaffold. we need big equipment with trained crewed that know what to

it all finished by june. this is just one part of an overall project here. they have about $22 million worth of repairs to the outside of the cathedral yet to be done. they've got enough to do this little piece on the north tower, so they don't have the rest of the money. they need fund-raisers to come forward. folks with the money with donations to make the rest of the work happen so they can get the cathedral back to where it was before the earthquake. a lot of work ahead. if you're in the area over the next couple of hours, you can take look. perhaps we'll see that crane once again start to lower this large and very beautiful carved stones. back to you all in the studio. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. right now general motors is recalling more than a million cars. we're talk about the chevy silv silverado and the gmc.

will be a blood drive to remember the victims at the virginia tech center. happening today, federal prosecutors are expected to release new information on a so-called shay dough investigation that loomed over vincent gray. businessman jeffrey thompson pled guilty to being the mastermind behind the campaign back in 2010. in 2014 thompson said gray new about it. the case was closed with no charges filed against gray last december. >> as far as i was concerned, that investigation was closed on december 9 of 2015 and that's exactly where i'll leave it at this point. >> gray is now running for ward seven for the council seat of that ward. democratic candidate bernie sanders is in rome right now. we just received this new video of him talking at vatican city. he was

right now a deadly stabbing is under way in southeast washington. it happened in the 4400 block of livingston road. we're told a man found stabbed found at the apartment died at the hospital. police haven't identified the victim but tell us they believe this was a domestic incident. so far no charges have been filed. >> the man accused of killing a montgomery county police officer is now expected to bleplead gui. he hit him last december while the officer was working at dui patrol. he faces a maximum of ten years. and it's 11:30 right now. an absolutely gorgeous day outside. >> you can see the sunny skies and great views from some of our cameras out there. make plans to get out and about this weekend. our team of the meteorologists say it's going to be

million in funding it could be shut down. a young cancer survivor working to make a difference in his community is at the center of one of the stories trending on nbcwashington.com. he's just been honored as a military child of the year. "news4's" jackie bensen has more on his aspiring accomplishments. >> reporter: this young man is in his own right a hero to the united states marine corps and a lot of other people. this 9-year-old whose dad is a marine was just 2 years old when he was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer and treated at walter reed military center. by age 4 with one kidney left he was doing speaking engagements to raise money for childhood cancer. >> i've raised money of over $4,000. >> reporter: christian was one of six young people recognizeded a a military child of the year by homefront,

weather. >> perfect weather. i was thinking when i graduated, a set of bed sheets and now people are thinking rokus and laptops. anyway, on to the weather. we'll really jump up over the next few hours. mid-50s by 2:00. a high today of 67. yesterday our official high at the airport was 64 degrees. a few degrees warmer than it was yesterday. by 5:00 in the evening, temperature around 66. 8:00 p.m., chilly. 61 degrees at that point. dining out forecast, you probably want to grab the light jacket with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. saturday and sunday night if you're planning on eating el fresco, you can plan on it upper 50s, low 60s. definitely more comfortable. monday looks to be the best with temperatures around 70 degrees during the evening hours. feeling very comfortable. some of us may even turn our ac on on monday with high temperatures around 80.

well, everybody's got something to complain about with stores they visit. how about if somebody says security is too good. >> that's what some people who robbed a california target did. they were stopped by security on their way out. they didn't like that very much. >> you know, we usually don't get cases where the person who robs the store is called back and then asks to speak to store security and complain about the fact they were stopped. >> there was a short fight until one of the thieves you see here flashes a gun at security officers who allow them to leave. well, police say they're working to track down the suspects by using the
