it happened in an instant and it has now led to years of repair for a popular landmark. "news4's" megan mgrath joins us where the second phase of repairs are getting under way. megan, you're down on the ground today. >> reporter: that's right, barbara. yesterday we were up on that scaffolding you see behind me here high above the roof of the national cathedral taking a look at some of those damaged pinnacles, pinnacles that were damaged in that earthquake that happened back in 2011. today, though, they're moving on to a different phase, and they've actually begun the work here and it it involves that large crane you see behind me. just a little while ago they started that process of lowering the damaged pinnacles, getting them down off of the north tower. take a look at the video. this is one of the pieces being

a half ago. a very, very difficult job. these stones are extremely heavy. anywhere from 400 pounds to nearly 3,000 pounds. that's why they had to bring in this large crane. many of them were damaged. they're wiggling. they're loose, they're a danger as a result of the damage done to that cathedral in that quake and so they had to do the repairs. we're told it's going to take ten years to do. that's because it's a very labor intensive process. a lot of the work needs to be done by hand. >> hand krafted building. it's all stone built on stone and you can't buy these pieces off a shelf at home depot. they're hand carved and hand put in place and they're at seriously heavy high heights. so it's not something you can lift off and put in a back pack and carry down a scaffold. we need big equipment with trained crewed that know what to

it all finished by june. this is just one part of an overall project here. they have about $22 million worth of repairs to the outside of the cathedral yet to be done. they've got enough to do this little piece on the north tower, so they don't have the rest of the money. they need fund-raisers to come forward. folks with the money with donations to make the rest of the work happen so they can get the cathedral back to where it was before the earthquake. a lot of work ahead. if you're in the area over the next couple of hours, you can take look. perhaps we'll see that crane once again start to lower this large and very beautiful carved stones. back to you all in the studio. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. right now general motors is recalling more than a million cars. we're talk about the chevy silv silverado and the gmc.
