shooting those firefighters. and authorities say they have yet to talk to two key witnesses. one is a surviving firefighter and the other is the brother of the homeowner. two of the firefighters that were injured in all of this, one of them may have been injured by trying to drag a fallen colleague out of the line of fire. all of this is happening against the backdrop of preparation for a sad ceremony. preparations for the funeral of firefighter john ulmschneider are almost done. kevin swain is recovering from being shot multiple times from that same incident. >> i'm pleased to report kevin is improving. >> reporter: as far as procedures, things will stay the same for the immediate future. >> typically, if there's no indication of a medical emergency or fire emergency, we wait for the county police. in this case there was an indication of a medical emergency. >> reporter: the homeowner's brother had called 911 from outside

room with armed people for a training exercise, to me, that's a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: this afternoon d.c. police chief acknowledged that there was an incident saturday at roll call inside this police station, but she says it's too soon to draw conclusions. >> i don't know anything yet. i just got a very brief summary of it. an official sergeant who was trying to do a training exercise and there was some confusion about the training exercise. i haven't even really seen a preliminary on it yet. >> reporter: no one was hurt in the incident, which is now being investigated by internal affairs. meyers says pointing a real gun at another person as a training exercise violates basic gun safety principles. >> even unloaded, never, ever point that firearm at another human being. the only time you ever point at a firearm at something is when you're willing to destroy that something.

a close call with a commercial jet is raising new concerns about recreational drones. british airways pilots were landing at london heathrow yesterday when they think a drone hit their plane. they were able to land safely, but nbc news has learned a small drone could potentially take out an engine on a large jet. tom costello has been looking into these dangers. he joins us live from reagan international airport. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. virginia tech ran a computer modelling on this very issue within the past six months. they found if an eight-pound drone were to strike an engineer, it could cause the engine to come apart. it would fire shrapnel throughout the entire engine casing. this is potentially a very lethal issue if you have a drone

aircraft. this plane landed without incident. this may be the first or second time this has ever happened. there are some unconfirmed reports out of norway about a plane maybe being hit by a drone there within the past six months, but this happened at london heathrow. the busiest airport in all of europe. in the united states, we have about 100 cases every single month in which a drone gets too close to a plane. thankfully so far there's not been any contact that we know of, but this is what aviation authorities are concerned about. if you have one of these or you know people who do, the faa says please note the rules of the sky. you have to keep a drone five miles out from an airport and not above 400 feet. if you do any of that, you're potentially looking at a fine

that. the faa tonight is asking that the entire drone community kind of take a lesson from what happened at heathrow. by the way, chris, they're now saying by the end of this year there will be more than 2.5 million drones crowding the s skies here in the united states. >> you're so wired into this industry. is this a case of drone technology just running so quickly and so far ahead of the government's ability to pass laws and regulations to keep everything under control? >> reporter: i think that's absolutely true. that clearly is an element here, but there's something else. some experts are now saying that we need to include what's called geofencing software. it's like gps technology within the drone itself that would prec prevent it from going into no-fly zones. it would prevent it from coming into any area that is a public venue where people might get hurt. while

>> reporter: chris, she's a 22-year-old transgender woman. two weeks ago, she was arrested on a sex charge in prince george's county. two days ago she was found murdered at a motel here in montgomery county. her name is kiona monroe blatney. she's a 22-year-old transgender woman found murdered last weekend in a room at the red roof inn in rockville. >> there they located the woman deceased in a hotel room. there was trauma to the upper portion of the victim's body. >> reporter: police believe kiona may have been involved in prostitution at the time she was killed. now on april 3rd, she was arrested at a hotel in capital heights in prince george's county. she was charged with a third-degree sex offense. according to court documents,

story on our nbc washington app today. >> reporter: good evening. 22-year-old deonte carraway is behind bars. he recorded video of young children engaging in sex acts, including with carraway. children between the ages of 9 and 11. in court filings submitted by carraway's defense attorneys, they ask a judge to suppress evidence gathered from searches of carwraway's two cell phones. what's more, his attorneys say the judge should suppress his statements to investigators because a psychological evaluation shows carraway has cognitive deficits and an iq score of 63. they say that raises doubt as to whether

the state department says u.s. officials have been in touch with the family, but they haven't released the person's name. the confirmed death toll is now at 350, but officials are very concerned that it's going to go higher. the quake's magnitude was 7.8 and the danger not yet over. more than 150 aftershocks have already rattled the region. virginia state police were back at shenandoah national park searching for a woman. no one has heard from nicole mittendorff since last wednesday. police found her car in the parking lot. mittendorff is an avid runner and triathlete. her family hopes she just went to the park to train on one of the trails. investigators say at this point there's no evidence of any foul play. with the start of mosquito season just around the corner, virginia is now an official test site for possible zika cases. the center for disease
