a close call with a commercial jet is raising new concerns about recreational drones. british airways pilots were landing at london heathrow yesterday when they think a drone hit their plane. they were able to land safely, but nbc news has learned a small drone could potentially take out an engine on a large jet. tom costello has been looking into these dangers. he joins us live from reagan international airport. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. virginia tech ran a computer modelling on this very issue within the past six months. they found if an eight-pound drone were to strike an engineer, it could cause the engine to come apart. it would fire shrapnel throughout the entire engine casing. this is potentially a very lethal issue if you have a drone

aircraft. this plane landed without incident. this may be the first or second time this has ever happened. there are some unconfirmed reports out of norway about a plane maybe being hit by a drone there within the past six months, but this happened at london heathrow. the busiest airport in all of europe. in the united states, we have about 100 cases every single month in which a drone gets too close to a plane. thankfully so far there's not been any contact that we know of, but this is what aviation authorities are concerned about. if you have one of these or you know people who do, the faa says please note the rules of the sky. you have to keep a drone five miles out from an airport and not above 400 feet. if you do any of that, you're potentially looking at a fine
