minutes just like it should. remember to listen to wtop 103.5 fm when you hop in your car. we have breaking news right now, police-involved shooting at an apartment complex in prince george's county. it started last night on spring hill court in greenbelt. derrick ward is live with new information. >> reporter: well, good morning. as you can see, it's a relatively calm situation out here right now, but that is a stark contrast to what happened out here about 10:35 last night. that's when police got a call for someone with a gun here in the 6200 block of spring hill court. and when greenbelt police officers got here, they were met with gunfire. joining me now is george matthews of the greenbelt police department. what happened once the officers got to the scene? >> the original call was for a person shooting a gun in the area of the 6200 block. by the time the officers it arrive on the scene, the individual evidently worked his way up to the third floor balcony. and the officers were actually

taking on fire from the suspect. >> and so did the officers return fire? >> one officer did return fire, an attempt to neutral liz the situation and the individual struck tactical unit able to access the building, secure the scene and the individual was transported to pg general hospital where he was later pronounced dead. >> reporter: now, this is a tight little area here. and it is miraculous that no officers and no one else was hurt with gunfire going on in this courtyard. >> we were thankful no one else was injured. we were surprised. >> reporter: now, the suspect has not been identified beyond a 28-year-old greenbelt resident? ? >> correct. we have to notify next the kin before we put any information out. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. so the situation here now in the investigative stage, but bizarre and dangerous incident that ended peacefully -- well, not peacefully for the suspect of course and the officers involved have to sort it all out and see exactly why i

derrick ward, news 4. developing this morning, nearly 100 workers will return to the shenandoah national park to search for a missing firefighter from woodbridge. it has been six days since anyone has seen or had contact with nicole mittendorff. yesterday teams focused on the area near the white oak canyon trail. her car was located at the trail entrance on saturday. mittendorff works as a firefighter and paramedic for fairfax county and also an avid triathlete and runner. at a vigil family and friends prayed for her safe return. ♪ the 31-year-old was last heard from wednesday. via text. she was reported missing after not showing up for work on friday. since then search teams have conducted ground and air searches. friends say it is not unusual for her to go into the national park by herself to

>> sometimes she likes to get away and to run and to challenge herself to get away from that stress. and we're hoping that she's just there somewhere needing our help now. >> a facebook page called find nicole now has been created to help in the search. mittendorff's husband thanked everyone searching and praying for his wife. today the man who police say shot two firefighters killing one of them could appear before a grand jury. it will likely be up to them whether the man will face any charges. one firefighter was killed and another seriously hurt after being shot in temple hills at a home on friday. the resident told police that he thought the firefighters were intruding and feared for his safety. the firefighters were responding to an emergency call. police say they still need to look at the evidence and conduct more interviews before moving forward with the charges. today memorial services will

several other major roads were seriously damaged and shut down. two earthquakes shook the country last week, 41 killed and 11 still missing. a man is fighting to stay alive after being shot in northwest washington. police say that he was shot just before 9:00 last night. police say his injuries are life threatening. police do not have any information on a suspect. police have identified the victim of a deadly shooting in prince george's county. investigators say 22-year-old karl marshall was shot on vienna drive in clinton saturday night. police do not believe the shoot was random. a $25,000 reward is being offered for information. rallies and vigils are planned today as baltimore marks one year since freddie gray's death. the 25-year-old died a week after suffering spine and neglect injuries. investigators say he got them in the back of a police van. l

police in prince george's county are investigating a deadly crash. police say 24-year-old ashley murphy died after a car she was traveling in left the road and struck a poll. this happened at the intercession of suitland road and meadow view drive in the suit land silver hill area on saturday around 2:00 a.m. the dliriver of the car is seriously hurt and remains in the hospital. police are trying to figure out why the driver lost control. now to a story that you saw first on 4. d.c. police are doing an internal review after it an officer pulled the trigger on an uploaded gun at a roll call. police sources telling news 4 that a sergeant had an officer unload his car and pretend to be an active shooter on saturday. this happened in a room of 10 to 20 armed officers at the first district station in southwest. the officer then pointed the gun at another officer and dry fired the weapon. chief cathy lanier says she neds

>> a sergeant who was trying do a training exercise and, you know, there was some confusion about the training exercise and i haven't even really seen a preliminary on it yet. >> no one was hurt, but sources tell us that one officer is on medical leave because of stress. a middle schoolteacher is off the job this morning after being arrested in fairfax county accused of child solicitation. fairfax county police say cath leap capatano traveled to northern virginia to have sex with a 13-year-old boy. she's a sixth grade math teacher at a middle school in north carolina. police say she had been communicating online of the boy and they were aware of the plan to meet this weekend. capatano was arrested at a hotel in herndon saturday afternoon. the so-called forever loyal bandit strikes again. police say he hit a capital one bank on leesburg pike in falls church on saturday. he passed a note to the teller

demanded cash. the teller handed him the money and he ran off. the fbi says this is the sixth robbery sinceup 2014. fbi offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest. neighbors are trying to find a new home for an 86-year-old veteran who was forced out of his prince george's county house. robert lawton was evicted on friday because the insurance policy on his home had not been paid. lawton had a reverse mortgage which requires him to have home equity, pay property taxes and hain taken homeowners insurance. the county says that tis taxes were paid up, but lawton thinks his goddaughter did not pay the insurance. >> i feel bad because here's the question. i didn't want to go to an old folks' home and i didn't want to be a burden to anybody else. >> a local church is now having its attorney get to the pot of
