>> reporter: the case of 16-year-old transgender student gavin glim sued for discrimination for not allowing him to use the boy's restroom has been followed closely in this fairfax county home. the mother and brother supported him through his transition and the joys and challenges that it brought to his world. >> it's awesome because it's a huge step forward for the transgender community. it means we are welcoming transgender people in the world like they should have been originally. >> the appeals court upheld the regulations that required public schools to treat transgender schools consistent with their identity. the ruling applies four states in the same federal judicial circuit including north carolina. it likely means that state's controversial transgender bathroom law passed last month cannot be enforced if public schools including colleges and universities. >> we have individuals that are happy. there's

private single stall restroom. tonight the ntsb is trying to figure out what caused this plane crash in stevensville, maryland. the single engine plane crashed in to a field here and caught fire. this happened 200 yards from that runway you saw as the plane was attempting to land at the bay bridge airport. just before 1:00 this afternoon. a man and woman were killed. they have not been identified. the plane was operated by the flight school at the airport chesapeake sport pilot. a man associated with the school said none of the students were on board at the same of the crash. search teams will return to the shenandoah national park in the morning to continue the search for a missing firefighter. tomorrow will mark one week since nicole's family last heard from her. her car was found parked near the white oak canyon trail saturday evening in shenandoah national park. today her husband spoke for the first time. he thanked the search teams and everyone who has helped to sprehe

minute. >> doug, thank you. tomorrow the prince georges county firefighter shot and killed while responding to a call will be laid to rest. today, hundreds paid their respects to john ulmschneider at a visitation at his home church here in saint mary's county. john ulmschneider was trying to get in a temple hills home to check on a person thought to be having a medical emergency. the homeowner said he thought someone was trying to break in to his house and he opened fire. the captain of his station said the county has lost a true servant. >> he was the kind of guy that if you came up short in line for your groceries, he would pay that money out of pocket, on or off duty. if you needed help, broke down on the side of the road, he's the guy that stopped and would have changed your tire. he's just that great of a guy. >> fire departments as far as baltimore city will help respond to emergency calls in prince george

the u.s. navy scrapped a recruiting mailer today over allegations of sexism. it says it offers women opportunities most girls aren't aware of in career areas that aren't just for the guys. all while staying in touch with your feminine side. 200,000 people across several states received the mailer. navy officials say it doesn't reflect navy values and the language in all the templates is being reviewed. with the addition of one word the d.c. council is looking to you haven up the message on license plates. for 15 years they said taxation without representation. now council member charles

people are inside. >> reporter: the anguish on the faces is as clear as the distraction. families keep vigils a few feet away. this 9-year-old girl and 1-year-old sister waiting for news on their injured mother rushed away in an ambulance. they tell volunteers they are scared and just want to go home. while rescue teams are on the ground from eight countries many say not enough is being done. neighborhoods are decimated, countless missing and many buildings have not been checked. this is what gives many hope. a hotel worker buried for two days uses his signal phone to signal rescue teams. he is weak but will survive. women and children are found alive and pulled from the rubble every day. but too often the news is

at the miami hotel, they discovered more bodies. daisy learns her brother victor is gone. still she stays. it's too hard to walk away and say good-bye. another day of dramatic rescues in texas. historically high floodwaters continue to rise. a heavy-duty truck was brought in to evacuate residents from an assistant living facility there. people were lifted from their wheelchairs in to the bed of the trucks. the death toll has now climbed to sikts. >> terrible to see the trouble in houston. water seems to be going up. >> the good news is it has stopped raining there. they have a chance of more rain later this week. that's not going to make it worse but 15 to 20 inches of rain in a short amount of time, it will take a long time to recover from this as the water will eventually go down. for us, we are talking about some really nice
