right now, in fairfax county we're awaiting word on whether charges will be filed in the death of a toddler. the 2-year-old girl was fo forgotten in the backseat of a car yesterday. julie carey is live in annandale where the child lived with her mother and siblings. >> reporter: neighbors get word of what police believe is a tragic accident. however, that police investigation continues tonight. investigators say for some reason there was a disruption in this family's schedule yesterday and it resulted in the death of a little girl. seven hours, that's how long police believe a 2-year-old girl was left in the backseat of her family's car in this townhome parking lot in annandale. the mother's boyfriend started the day by dropping off two older children. >> dropped the 10-year-old off, dropped the 15-year-old off, and then went home not realizing that the 2-year-old was still in the backseat of the vehicle. it wasn't

when he went to pick up the mother from her job that the man realized the child was still in the backseat, by now unresponsive. he called 911, but it was too late. >> it broke my heart, you know, because i can't believe that happened. i don't know. why can i say? it's very sad. >> reporter: that was the reaction of one neighbor when she got the news. she has two young children and says at home with them, but for so many other parents the morning routine means multiple dropoffs. even a few minutes in an enclosed car can be too much in the spring. >> we have seen children die in hot cars on days where it was in the 50s outside. so what feels comfortable to us is not comfortable to our children. >> reporter: yesterday it was 71. at 70 degrees after 30 minutes in a closed car, the temperature

in an hour, 113 degrees. after that, 115. and on a hot summer day of 95 degrees, it takes just 30 minutes for the car to heat up like an oven to 129 degrees. now, we've just gotten updated word from arlington county police who picked up this investigation from fairfax county police. the man who was driving that car yesterday, the mother's boyfriend, has now been charged with felony child neglect. coming up on news 4 at 6:00, tips from child safety experts for how this kind of thing can be avoided and why that involves maybe putting your shoe in the backseat of your car. back to you now in the studio. tonight, three people have been charged with shooting a man along a busy road in arlington, including the victim. this happened right along columbia pike. a group of men were haggling with a business owner last night over the sale of a car. one of them pulled a gun and

we're following up on our breaking news. an unexpected loss, the iconic singer prince found dead inside his home in minneapolis. right now, fans are gathering outside his paisley park estate to pay tribute to a true legend. nbc's janelle klein is there right now. janelle, i can't imagine what it's like there for folks coming to his estate. >> reporter: it is really a tribute to prince, chris. i mean, this is the basis of all of prince's music. this studio, paisley park studio, is where he founded his career as a native of minneapolis. he has never cut ties with minnesota. this was still where he was creating his music. he gave a dance party as recently as saturday night. he was always coming back to minnesota, always wanting to perform for fans here, and certainly has a lot of fans out here honoring him today as they learn of his

learning about his death? we know he had that bad bout of the flu. have we learned anything else about that or what happened in the last day or two? >> reporter: well, as you said, he did make an emergency landing, his plane in illinois, a few dies ago. that was confirmed to be a case of the flu. when he gave that dance party on saturday night, he was telling fans that he felt well, even joking with them in saying, wait a few days until you say any prayers. just trying to reassure fans and really the public that he was doing fine. in fact, some people reported seeing him ride his bike up and down the streets here. yet, they were not aware how serious this illness was. maybe prince himself wasn't how serious it was because sheriff's deputies were called to paisley park this morning just before 10:00. they arrived

they attempted to revive him, but were unable to do so. very unexpected because he was saying that he was feeling so much better after that bout of the flu. >> well said, janel. that's one of the reasons why this has caught so many people by surprise. thank you very much. meanwhile bone cancer accounts for less than 1% of all cancers, but a few thousand cases diagnosed each year, so early detection is critical. >> doreen genzler has the story. >> reporter: doctors caught dr. sheryl chun's cancer. doctors could not see the tumor while the surgery was under

technique. >> i was having some hip pain. didn't think anything of it. i was a fourth year medical student, was going into residency. >> reporter: until one day the pain was too excruciating to ignore. >> nothing fixed it. >> reporter: an kx-ray showed a little tumor. >> we could tell she had a massive tumor. it was about this big. what was really unusual in this case is that her tumor extended so far down that it actually covered her hip joint. that posed a significant problem for us. >> reporter: she had a tumor that is a rare type of bone cancer that develops in cartilage cells and accounts for just 20% of bone tumors. the tumor is

chemotherapy and radiation, so surgery is the only way to treat it. >> we needed to come up with a way where we could actually plan her surgery and take the tumor out while still saving her hip joint. >> reporter: they mapped out the surgery feeding high resolution cat scans and mris into this computer. >> we had to plan on making a cut working from the inside of her pelvis out toward the tumor. >> reporter: basically operating virtually blind. >> it allows us to map out the patient's anatomy exactly with the imaging that was done and give us realtime feedback. i could tell exactly what portion of the bone i'm working on. >> reporter: after seven to eight hours of surgery, the d tumor was safely

her recovery has involved months of physical therapy, but it is going well. >> i'm still a work in progress. i'm still going to pt and still definitely have weakness and issues, but definitely ahead of schedule. >> she's doing well. she is back doing rounds at children's national medical center where she is a resident. she says this experience has better helped her understand what her patients are going through. >> it must be so different for the roles to be reversed and for the doctor to be on the patient side of things. >> how many times has a doctor fussed at you about something you should have done and here was a medical student. >> doctors make the worst patients. it is sentencing day for the man who landed his gyro ccoptern the grounds of the capital last

mark segraves joins us live where the sentence was just announced. >> reporter: 120 days in prison for douglas hughes, the former postal worker from florida who, as you said, flew his gyrocopter over the capital. he said it was an act of civil disobedience. the judge said it was a publicity stunt. prosecutors said it was a reckless game of russian roulette with the public safety. the judge said he will have to serve 120 days in prison and then have 12 months of supervised probation. stay away from the u.s. capital and the white house. here's what he said to reporters just after leaving the courthouse. >> the verdict is in. i'm going to be serving four months in jail. i expect it to be in florida. when i get out, i'l

we've been very dry. the pollen has been way up there. mix and sun of clouds. we've seen some more clouds today, but also some sunshine at times. that's still allowed temperatures to get up into the 70s. current temperature out at the airport right now. you can see a little bit of sunshine today. 74 degrees. winds out of the south at about 13 miles per hour. we are seeing that southerly wind. up to 79 in fredericksburg. 79 in charlottesville. near 80 there. 74 up towards the leesburg area. the dry stretch that we've seen, definitely this month we're getting closer to an inch below average. since march 1st, we're well over three inches below average. that's going to continue on through the next three days. tonight's rain right now is back to the west. nothing going on around the d.c. metro area, but if you look back towards winchester here, around winchester in through frederick

we're following the latest developments the death of music icon prince. we got this picture of him at his latest concert in atlanta a few weeks ago. prince was battling the flu. his plane also had to make an emergency landing last week in illinois because of a medical emergency. his representatives have said that was for dehydration. of course, deputies were called to his home and studios outside minneapolis this morning where they found prince unresponsive in an elevator on his compound. they performed cpr, but obviously it did not work. prince dead at the age of 57. eri erika? it should have been a sentencing day for a man who admitted to shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend that target parking lot. >> instead a major twist in the case. meagan fitzgerald was in the court today and joins us from nt

>> reporter: in an unexpected move, donald bricker fires his attorney and is asking the judge to withdraw his guilty plea. this comes after he confessed to the murder on two different occasions. we're hearing what bricker told detectives shortly after the murder. it has been nearly 11 months since the 24-year-old was gunned down in this parking lot. her ex-boyfriend donald bricker jr. pulled the trigger before speeding off his crashing his vehicle a few miles away. bricker told investigators he shot his ex-girlfriend when they interviewed him inside his hospital room shortly after the murder. we have obtained that video, which we're hearing for the very first time. >> i shot her and then i shot her again. i just pointed it and shot her. >> why?

reporting in montgomery county, news 4. with primary day in maryland a little less than a week ago, the candidates in the republican presidential race are making more appearances today. cruz accused donald trump of giving into political correctness for opposing north carolina's new bathroom law. the law which requires transgender people to use bathrooms matching the gender on their birth certificate should not have been passed. today's appearance is cruz's second in maryland this week. trump held an event on the eastern shore yesterday while john kasich was in annapolis on monday. on the democratic side, a clinton is in town trying to get more voters to the polls. chelsea clinton campaigned in silver springs this morning. she reached out to young people to encourage them to be a bigger part of the political process. after silver springs, she went over to prince

look at this car. the door handle, the steering wheel, the rearview mirror. it's hard to believe that anyone could survive something like this, but a woman did with some help. the flames went through and around the car, up in the air almost touching the power lines above. this was the scene on route 301 on brandywine road last night. imagine being trapped in a car on fire like this. and when you look at the car today, it's hard to believe anyone survived, but indeed yesterday there was a woman caught inside and she made it out with some help. it began with flames shooting out from the undercarriage and she was in trouble. >> she was sitting straight up in her seat, except here
