the sheriff's office is investigating. an autopsy is scheduled for later today. the world is asking why another music icon is gone way too soon. >> reporter: news of the music legend's death sending shock waves around the country. in new york, fans gathered at harlem's apollo theater. in brooklyn, nearly 1,000 people swayed and hugged during the block party, organized by film maker spike lee. and on broadway, oscar winner jennifer hudson and the cast of "the color purple" honor the music legend with a remembnditif his iconic "purple rain." while the cast of "hamilton" used their happy feet, dancing to "let's go crazy," following the thursday night performance. the city of minneapolis, awash in purple, in honor of music royalty. outside the first avenue

"purple rain," thousands of fans gathered here to honor prince. all weekend long dance party. >> it was the soundtrack of our lives. how could we not pay tribute to that? >> reporter: condolences flooding in on social media from celebrities in music, television and film. and from the white house, president obama offered his thoughts and prayers. a strong spirit transcends rules, prince once said, and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder or more creative. ♪ raspberry beret >> reporter: the artist behind "little red corvette," was unresponsive. >> not breathing. >> reporter: medical personnel performed cpr but were unable to revive him. transcripts from the 911 call reviewed confusion inside his paisley park home. unidentified male

describing people inside as distraught. when asked how prince died, the caller says, i don't know. i don't know. just last week, the pop music icon greeted fans on stage in atlanta for what would be his final public performance. one day later, his plane made an emergency landing in illinois. at the time, he was hospitalized for what was described as the flu. ♪ purple rain, purple rain >> reporter: the "purple rain" star trying to reassure fans held a dance party over the weekend. he said, waste a few days before you waste any prayers. a legend who revolutionized music, gone too soon, and whose death is raising more questions than answers. >> among those devastated by prince's death, his ex-wife,

everything. the masculinity, he can take your girl wearing high heels. >> we take for granted in a way his music now and this sound. take us back there. this was so pioneering. >> in the beginning, when i first learned about prince, you know, he was like the blueprint for how do you make it in music for young musicians like us. i mean, the idea that somebody could play rock, somebody could play funk, someone could play jazz, folk, you know, all at the same time, blues, and yet make commercial hit records, it was remarkable. >> his former style -- i'm stealing this -- but his former stylist said this yesterday. she said, nobody could go between god and sex like him. one song was a prayer and the next was foreplay. >> like the song "controversy," wh

prayer in its entirety, while talking about, am i black or white, straight or gay? i've never seen anybody that can put so much together. he was incredible in that way. >> he had this incredible persona, seemed so mysterious. being in his presence was intimidating. >> i was always nervous interviewing him. >> i'm in the room with prince and i'm nervous. i'm in the room with prince. he's like, pipe down, we have to talk here. i was always in awe of him. i didn't get shyness. i got theater and mystery. he didn't love talking to the media. i know he loved talked to you, but he wasn't a fan of talking to the media. in private, he could go. >> he cared about issues. it wasn't all about music. well, about music but music issues. he broke from a record company over ownership and rights. he changed his name to a symbol

his face during a concert. where did that come from? >> he was a business genius as much as a musical genius. like a steve jobs in a way. i don't know, man. it was just -- you know, he talked about everything from compulsory license, you know, to like you said, breaking contracts to ownership of publishing. created ways of selling music. i think he was the first artist -- i'm sure he was -- that would sell cds with his tickets. his tickets would go crazy. it would cause his records to go up on the charts. every time he played a show, his album went to number one. just a genius. >> you touched on it a second ago. i, by the way, always considered you to be an incredibly fashionable guy. this guy could dress. >> it was incredible. there was a feminine fashion thing going on, right? with a guy who was like,

know, you don't want to bring your girl around prince. >> we talk about him and what a musical prodigy he was. it's one thing to be a virtgrea anything, but he played every instrument, wrote every lyric, produced the songs. >> that's right. >> give us a sense of what that means, how hard that is. >> that's the most difficult thing. first of all when you're playing every instrument, that means you're playing them one at a time. you're performing -- like you're putting the drum track down first and playing the entire song while hearing it in his head. then lay the bass, then lay the piano and then lay the guitar and the background vocals and lead vocals and strings. it's impossible. no one can do this. >> something else that's unusual, most of the times, you become a musical sensation, you go to l.a. or come to new york or a motown

he stayed in minneapolis. >> he did a record at a l.a. plant. he said one time the phone rang and he answered and it was chaka khan. that's how he met her. he was doing a phone prank. he didn't move. never left minneapolis. he was in new york a lot, always here. >> still doing tons of live shows. always a performer. >> listen, he would do a live show for three hours and then leave and go to a club that night, same night. you never seen anyone quite like this. >> not to end on a downer, did you have any clue things were wrong with him health wise? >> the thing that really bothers me about it is the prince i know was like super healthy, vegan, wasn't an abuser of drugs or alcohol. he lived right, you know. he was clean. he looked young and looked really healthy and vibrant. the whole thing

rain. let's bring in carson daly, out in los angeles working on "the voice." good to see you. >> good morning, guys. >> let's go back to the '80s. there are a lot of artists, but three names stand out. prince, michael jackson and madonna. why was he different than the other two? >> wow. well, you start with his musical output, matt. prince was somebody that -- i mean, he did it all himself. if you look at "purple rain" or "1999." in the '80s, you wouldn't see this. he wrote the records. he played every instrument on the records. he was a one-man show. michael jackson had quincey jones. there would be no michael without quincey. madonna was breaking grounds for female artists in the '80s, predominantly in the dance scene of new york. prince was just a step ahead. the record deal he got in the '80s speaks to

$100 million with warner. it was a bigger deal than both madonna and michael. >> one of the things i keep thinking about is how young he was when he had these first breaks and how much courage and confidence in himself he had, to be just totally original. >> yeah. i think he thrived on that. i think that's what was -- even at the end of the day with this lawsuit with warner brothers, him fighting for his autonomy musically, you know, he wrote for so many other people. he wrote, as you said in the piece, "manic monday" for the bengals. it was important for him to produce music for himself, for others. he was going to do it on his own terms. he was fearless. my theory is him staying in the twin cities allowed him to stay at arm's length, to do things his own way. >> so many other artists are talking about the influence prince had on them. as the host of

years, you must have seen a ton of artists come through who had taken some little piece of prince and tried to work it into their own persona. >> matt, i think it's safe to say everybody who came through. i got to mtv in the late '90s. i was there because they played music videos. i left because they stopped playing music videos. every artist who came through on my watch, including prince, highly influenced by genres. rock and roll, soul, everybody wanted to be like prince. justin timberlake you saw the other day, there was a little of prince in every song i wrote. prince wrote for alicia keys, jay-z and beyonce. you can't say this about a lot of people. he touched everybody. i think that's what the last 24 hours has really been about. his reach was so far, so wide. he'll be so sorely missed. >> we just have a few seconds

chewy delights. only from tums. this morning on today food we're wrapping up a week of 20-minute meals. i made this supper for my family this past sunday night and put it on instagram. i got 3,000 likes. i'll try to do it for you, as well. it's pork chops, quinoa, a salad and roast eed cauliflower. takes more than 20 minutes but i'll show you. i like 2-inch thick pork chops but that's another story. take a couple of -- like three cups of water and

quinoa. pour it on in there. you're going to bring it in a simmer. just under a little bit of a boil. then take it to a simmer. put the pot on and it'll take 15 minutes to cook. it absorbs all the water. once it happens, you can throw in butter, clives and a little salt and a pepper and let it sit. fluff it with a fork and it's great. you go to the pork chops. again, a little olive oil, little salt, little pepper on each side. you're going to put these in a hot skillet. if you have a cast iron skillet, it's the greatest invention. >> i don't have one. it's the one thing i don't have. >> these are going to cook quickly. you only want them to cook two minutes per side. these have been in. you flip them over. as that -- once you flip it over, throw in a little ro rosemarrrosema rosemary. flash the ic

out of the pork chops right now -- >> i'll tell you about the cauliflower. it's one of the great vegetables. this will take about an hour. you start it early and go do something else. basically, core it from the bottom, brush it with olive oil, salt and pepper. put it in the oven. >> what pan do you put it in? >> a cast iron skillet, a baking pan, whatever. put it in the oven at 375 for an hour. it comes browned out like that. >> it's all you have to do? >> that's it. >> real flavor to it. >> roasting a cauliflower is one of the great things that most people don't realize how good it tastes. especially when you roast it. take these out. then you've got this leftover -- some olive oil and the garlic and the rosemary. >> bring it over. >> spoon it over the top. then you have your quinoa. you've got your cauliflower. i'll flip this over. >> al, pork chops are pretty much my favorite meal on the planet. l
