metro passengers encounter smoke. ready, set, vote. one white house hopeful makes a stop in our area. we're getting reaction to an unprecedented political move. right now, the victim is recovering and police are out looking for his attacker. this happened right outside wilson high school in northwest d.c. just as students were arriving for classes this morning. let's get to mark segraves who is live right outside the school. what are you hearing? >> reporter: this is not the first time police have been called here to wilson high school. it was last december where a student was arrested in this school for brandishing a handgun. then you'll recall the six wilson high school students that were charged in that beating at a metro station not too long ago. then in the past

students here have been robbed at knife point just outside the school, but this time this morning the student was stabbed. the victim is a senior, who friends say regularly drives to school and parks in the nearby neighborhood. this morning as he got out of his car just steps from the school a man approached him and demanded his phone and money. >> there was a brief exchange of words. a struggle ensued and our victim was stabbed in the leg. >> reporter: the suspect dropped a knife and fled on foot. the student was able to walk into the school and ask for help. his friends say they were shocked to see their friend as he staggered into the school. >> saw him going into an ambulance and there's like blood. that's all i knew. >> reporter: that victim's friends tell us he is a senior. he is a member of the wilson crew team here. he recently got accepted to t

he is expected to recover from his wounds. coming up at 5:00, we'll tell you about that other incident where a younger girl was held up at knife point just across the school. this time tomorrow many of you will be headed to the polls in maryland. that's made maryland a hot spot for candidates. john kasich just wrapped up a town hall in rockville. four of the five candidates for president are fanned out across the five states that are voting tomorrow. they're making a last ditch effort to earn votes. john kasich and ted cruz are trying a now tact to stop donald trump. kasich said he'll pull back on his campaign in indiana. cruz said he'll do the same for kasich in oregon a

candidates are doing to turn out the vote on the day before the maryland primary. back to you. tomorrow could close the door on bernie sanders bid with 384 delegates up for grabs. hillary clinton can't win enough to clinch the nomination, but if she has a good night, she could end up with 90% of the delegates she needs with eight states still left to vote. sanders wouldn't have another chance at a large haul of delegates before californians go to the polls in june. over the weekend, senator sanders promised to stay in the race until every state has voted. three firefighters were hurt battling a massive blaze at home. two were injured when part of a wall collapsed. all three are expected to be okay. meanwhile damage to three of the buildings is pretty bad. smoke and water damage has

live there. they are spending the night in a hotel. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started. this afternoon police have reopened the road near prince's estate. they had to close it last thursday as thousands of fans and mourners turned the area into a memorial. there's a chain link fence surrounding the property. visitors from around the world have been leaving purple flowers, notes, and balloons. new at 4, a delivery driver in jail accused of assaulting a police officer. police say they were called to tazwell street in arlington because of a dispute. when they got there, roderick watt became combative. he's now charged with two counts of assault on police and obstruction of justice. fairfax county police are trying to figure out how a george mason university student ended up dead. the 21-year-old was

unresponsive at his townhome yesterday afternoon. investigators say he had suffered trauma to his upper body. he lived with his sister and his parents. a car was seen being towed away from the scene. detectives are searching for answers after a young man died after some sort of fight in a park in montgomery county. meagan fitzgerald has been digging into the store. >> reporter: this all happened at 10 cl:00 last night. we're told this investigation is far from over. in fact, if you look behind us here, you can see month comegom county investigators are still collecting evidence. it was an 18-year-old that was assaulted in this parking lot. that 18-year-old was taken to the hospital where he died. police are still look lg f

metro is trying to explain yet another smoke incident. smoke filled a tunnel and part of the train on the red line saturday night. >> this kind of scene is becoming all too familiar. this time it happened between the tinley town and friendship heights stations. at the risk of sounding like a broken record here, what happened this time? >> reporter: that's right, chris. it is starting to get a bit repetitive at this point. we're talking about smoke in the tunnel. what we do know is saturday night around 8:00 a red line train was approaching the friendship station. smoke started coming into the train and riders started panicking on board that train. we actually talked to one rider who was on board the

day. take a listen. >> the sound sounded like a cross between static and thunder that erupted behind us. >> reporter: right. he said there was a large, loud -- it was noisy. then all of a sudden there was billowing smoke that started coming on board the train. people started pushing, some jumping over seats to get away from the smoke. eventually, metro reversed the train to the tinley town station. nevertheless, this scene was all too familiar and all too similar to that deadly smoke episode over a year ago. >> there have been a number of smoke incidents. what is metro doing right now to fix the problem that is causing the smoke? >> reporter: right. it's a great question, pat. why do these things continue to happen? what's going on? a lot of it traces back to

what happened here saturday, the pattern is it is an arcing insulator. a piece of the rail caught fire and started smoking. what they try to do is clean the material, clean those pieces so that there's no debris or anything that can catch fire. that goes from everything to washing down tunnel walls and other maintenance. >> was metro able to at least communicate to riders what was happening and how to safely get out of there? >> reporter: so often, chris, you hear from riders that they haven't gotten any communication during these episodes. a rider said it was 20 to 30 minutes and they got no communication at all about what was actually happening. it wasn't until the train started moving back to the

were told what's happening. >> unacceptable. thanks for digging into that, adam. more extreme weather in the plains states. a hailstorm shut down a major interstate in kansas last night. the storm rolled through the saline county about an hour north of wichita. dropped quarter size hail. there was a brief tornado watch there, but no actual reports of twisters. you know whenever we start to see that weather percolating in the midwest, is that coming our way now? >> yeah, guys. we're going to see a chance for thunderstorms here during the day tomorrow. one or two of those could be on the strong side. nothing too severe. you mentioned kansas. they may have a tornado outbreak tomorrow. we'll be watching out that way as well. for us, another beautiful afternoon. lots of sunshine. 77 degrees right now. winds out of the south at about 9 miles per hour. that wind helping to keep things on the mild side.

the neighborhood is starting to change. >> a community that's been changing since we moved in. >> reporter: this morning montgomery county police continued investigating a murder from the night before. detectives say several people were in the parking lot at around 10:00 when 18-year-old oscar benitez was assaulted and taken to the hospital. >> police were called to germantown about ten after 10:00. >> reporter: medical staff called police to say benitez had died. meanwhile, the suspect took off. >> it is just concerning. >> reporter: many neighbors say they're concerned about what they consider an increase in violence and they're hoping it will end soon. >> unfortunately, though, it's not a surprise. >> reporter: police can't conclusively say this was gang related, but that is one angle out of many that they're investigating. they're asking anyone with in the commuy
