the neighborhood is starting to change. >> a community that's been changing since we moved in. >> reporter: this morning montgomery county police continued investigating a murder from the night before. detectives say several people were in the parking lot at around 10:00 when 18-year-old oscar benitez was assaulted and taken to the hospital. >> police were called to germantown about ten after 10:00. >> reporter: medical staff called police to say benitez had died. meanwhile, the suspect took off. >> it is just concerning. >> reporter: many neighbors say they're concerned about what they consider an increase in violence and they're hoping it will end soon. >> unfortunately, though, it's not a surprise. >> reporter: police can't conclusively say this was gang related, but that is one angle out of many that they're investigating. they're asking anyone with in the commuy

montgomery county police department. coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you what neighbors say they will be doing to try to make their communities safer. we're also keeping our eye on a high school student in d.c. who is recovering after he got stabbed on his way to class. >> police think this may have started as some kind of a robbery. the victim was attacked outside of wilson high school in northwest d.c., and we have learned that this is not the first time something like this has happened in recent days. news 4's mark segraves is live outside of the school this evening. >> reporter: good evening. it was just about 9:00 this morning. most of the students were already inside wilson high school when the teenager came through these doors bleeding from a stab wound. >> it appears at this time he was just attempting to rob him of his phone and wallet. >> reporter: the student parked his car across the street from wilson high school as he had many times before, but this morning he told police a man with a knife tried to rob him.

the student was stabbed in the leg. >> high school student then walked across the street and sought help inside the school. >> reporter: the suspect ran into the neighborhood and got away. this is the second time a wilson high school student has been robbed at knife point in the past week. an 11th grade girl was robbed across the street last tuesday afternoon as she was walking home from school. she was not hurt. police crime statistics show an increase in crime in this neighborhood over the past two months. the friend of today's victim did not want to be identified on camera. >> i feel concerned for my safety now that people are being robbed a couple blocks from school. that's a concern to my safety and the safety of my fellow seniors. >> reporter: it is not just students feeling unease. the woman was troubled to learn the student was stabbed just steps from her home. >> i'm really concerned. >> reporter: one arrest had been

that young girl that happened across the street. that suspect is a juvenile who has actually been charged in in three armed robberies in this area, but there may be other suspects at large in those cases. as for today's suspect, he still remains at large. police have not linked today's incident to those other robberies. coming up at 6:00, why did d.c. public schools not notify parents of the first incident last week. we'll tell you what they had to say about that coming up in the next hour. >> mark, what are the d.c. police saying about maybe foot patrols or patrolling that area more, especially if this is starting to happen with a little more regularity? >> reporter: i can tell you that we're seeing today right now a lot of police presence around wilson high school. in fact, several different police cars patrolling. high visibility. they have not told us that they're actually ramping up visibility in this area, but typically after school in this area you do see a lot of police because when all these students get out. a lot of times we have a

trouble up at the tinley town metro station. today, we're also seeing officers patrollinaround the fort reno perimeter. that's federal land. that's patrolled by the u.s. park police. >> thanks, mark. a teenager from fairfax county has died after being hit by a car. he was crossing the street with a group of people early saturday morning. a car tried to go around another car that stopped to let the group pass and it hit him. he was a student at radford university. the driver has not been charged. a grandmother says the justice system is failing her and her granddaughter because the two of them were struck while legally crossing the street in a crosswalk. her daughter was killed in that accident. this happened last year on route 197 in

in that accident and the driver is facing misdemeanor charges. >> if you are not texting, if you're not speeding, if you have not consumed alcohol prior to driving, it's okay to kill someone in a crosswalk. >> in our second half hour, prince george's county bureau chief will be explaining how this happened. it is coming up in a story that you're only going to see here. three firefighters needed medical treatment after a fire broke out at the joint base anacostia-bolling. we're told as they tried to put it out the fire spread throughout the building. fire officials say all of the injured firefighters were treated at the scene. after their wins in new york, both donald trump and hi

with five states holding primary contests, including maryland. 384 delegates are up for grabs for the democrats. 172 for the republicans. pennsylvania obviously the largest in terms of delegate count. now, trump and clinton could have big wins in the state. a new nbc/wall street journa journal/marist poll showed -- polling locations will open at 7:00 tomorrow morning and close at 8:00 tomorrow night. delegates available. there are 95 up for grabs for the democrats. 38 for the republicans. i've got to say a lot of you and your neighbors have already voted in that early voting. 258,000. well over a

people. that's a big percentage of voters in the state that have cast the ballot during the period that ended last week. trump is expected to get a large share of delegates tomorrow and now his two opponents are looking down the line, hoping a new alliance will prevent him from reaching the number of delegates he needs to get the nomination. john kasich and ted cruz are joining forces. kasich said he'll skip indiana next week to help cruz. cruz said he'll skip oregon to help kasich. >> it's a corrupt enterprise. in politics you're allowed to collude. actually, i was happy because it shows how weak they are. it shows how pathetic they are. >> reporte

there's a petition to overturn the law that the republican lawmakers there passed in a special session last month, a law that forces transgender people to use bathrooms based on the sex that is listed on their birth certificates. it also prevents the other cities in north carolina from passing their own laws that would protect transgender people and allow them to use bathrooms based on the sex they identify with. hundreds of thousands of shoppers are promising to boycott target over the store's new bathroom policy. employees and customers can use store bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity. the american family association, a christian activist group, has gotten nearly half a million signatures in support in less than a week. target says it stands behind its policy to offer an inclusive place for family to shop. a family killed execution

annapolis today. we'll tell you what she's hoping to do next. today is the start of the district's street smart safety campaign. police kicked it off by enforcing an effort along the corner of 14th in d.c. some of the drivers that didn't stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, they got a ticket. those laundry detergent pods can make it a whole lot easier to clean our clothes, but despite so many warnings tens of thousands of kids are still being exposed to their dangers. susan hogan has important information. >> there are new numbers out today and they're alarming. an increase in calls for help after children ingested colorful laundry detergent pods. pods like these are highly concentrated. if a child gets their hands on it and ingests, itou
