delegates in the upcoming primari primaries. john kasich just held a town hall in rockville ahead of the maryland primary. >> reporter: thank you. kasich's town hall was pretty mellow out here. he had a few hundred people. nbc news has learned it was over the weekend that kasich and ted cruz made this extraordinary deal to gang up against their party's frontrunner. donald trump savaged his opponents for their desperate alliance to deny him in the delegates he needs. >> so they colluded. actually, i was happy because it shows how weak they are. it shows how pathetic they are. >> reporter: john kasich is cooperating with rival ted cruz. >> if donald trump is the nominee, hillary clinton wins. >> reporter: in oregon and new

july. donald trump not only has to really win big, win almost all the delegates here in maryland and the other four states tomorrow, but then has to keep on winning almost all the delegates from this team now of kasich and cruz. live in rockville, steve handelsman. news 4. the cruz/kasich alliance could save both of them from elimination, but it's a gamble. there are ways it could backfire. chris lawrence has a closer look at the potential pitfalls coming up at 6:15. a young man dead. police trying to find out who killed him. neighbors say it is only one of several frightening events that have happened at the centerway park in montgomery village area recently. >> reporter: police say that that latest incident happened right here in this parking lot not far from where parents park their cars to bring their kids to that playground there, which

they're determined to try and do what they can to make their community safer. it's a community park where kids usually come to play, but on sunday night just after 10:00 centerway park turned into the scene of a murder investigation, which continued into early monday morning. >> it's sad, and it's worrisome. >> reporter: montgomery county police say 18-year-old oscar benitez was brutally assaulted in this parking lot. >> investigators are still talking with those who were present at the time. some people transported him to the hospital. and there was also two other injured parties there at the scene as well. >> reporter: but so far police say they don't have a suspect in custody. meanwhile neighbors are concerned about violence in the area. though some folks say they will be doing more to try to keep their community safe. >> making sure that public officials are kept aware of

residents are committed to keeping our community safe. >> reporter: now, police say they are investigating the possibility of this incident being gang related. they're asking anyone with information to contact the montgomery county police department. dore doreen? >> all right. thank you. for the second time in a matter of days, a d.c. student was robbed at knife point walking to school, but this time the student was stabbed. while parents were notified about today's case, they were not told about the previous one. the most recent attack happened this morning outside of wilson high school in northwest. that's where we find mark segraves with details on both crimes. mark? >> reporter: good evening, doreen. yes, today's stabbing took place on the backside of wilson high school in a neighborhood along nebraska avenue. last tuesday night it was a female student who was leaving school across this park by this tennis court where she was robbed at knife point. and after that first i

was stabbed in the leg. >> reporter: the suspect ran away through the neighborhood. the student was able to get to school where staff called police and paramedics. the school's principal sent an e-mail to parents alerting them of the stabbing. but after the robbery of an 111th grade female student last week, the principal did not send an e-mail to parents. even with the safety of northwest, we may still fall prey to an undesirable situation. we reached out to the chancellor of d.c. public school and the mayor's office to ask why parents were never alerted about the first incident here. they told us late this afternoon they're looking into that and they would get back to us. d.c. police tell us they did make an arrest in that first incident. one juvenile was arrested. he was charged with multiple robberies in this area. as for the suspect today, he is still at large. the victim is expected to recover. jim, back to you.

there are new efforts to stop violence between students from two other d.c. high schools. beginning today the kids at dunbar and mckinley technology education campus, those students are being dismissed at different times. the students have been fighting at different metro stations when school lets out. now there's going to be a 20-minute gap between dismissal. police are having for your help in identifying some of the people in this video. you can see them knocking at least two victims to the ground. police say this was part of a robbery that happened early sunday morning on georgia avenue near howard university. so far nobody has been arrested yet. tonight, three navy families are staying in a hotel after a fire at joint base anacost anacostia-bolling. one building was destroyed by the flames

we were told earlier today three firefighters were injured battling that blaze, but those firefighters were examined on the scene and they're okay. officials are still trying to figure out what caused that fire. within the last hour, metro released some new information about that smoke episode over the weekend on the red line. a tunnel and rail car started filling with smoke after something started burning. adam tuss has been digging through the new details. he has the latest live from tinley town. >> reporter: it looks metro is focusing not on a problem with tracks, but something that came loose on a train that caused all that smoke. new details about what possibly could have gone wrong on the red line saturday night. metro just released a statement saying the investigation is focusing on a foreign object, specifically a metal part of a rail car becoming dislodged and making contacts with the

electrified third rail. metro says there were no problems with power cables in this area, but there was a report of a loud bang and a flash. and that's what we heard from a rider who was on board. >> i turned around to see flashing lights, flames, reflections off the tunnel walls, and a loud noise and billowing smoke. >> reporter: chuck holmes was on the train. >> that's when people really started to get nervous. people tried to jump over seats. people were really scared. >> reporter: what we do know is that there was smoke and a lot of it between tinley town and friendship heights. for a lot of riders, this too familiar to the deadly episode last year. for 20 to 30 minutes, riders didn't get word about what was happening. no one was hurt. >> clearly for the people on the train, it's very stressful. i get it. >> reporter: metro says in some of these episodes more time is needed to figure h

handle the situation. now it turns out there was actually two off-duty firefighters that were on board that train. they helped the customers who were riding along in that smoke-filled train, even helping some children out telling them to get down to the ground just like they learned in school. >> so easy to understand why people would be freaked out on a train with smoke happening. and this is not a new situation. you mentioned the lafont incident from last year. did they learn anything from that that helped them handle what happened this weekend? >> reporter: clearly communication was still a problem here. you heard that rider say it was 20 to 30 minutes before anything was happening, but what we did hear is there is a new fire liaison that responds to these incidents that is able to coordinate with people. that worked out perfectly this

i'm chris van hollen. my entire public life i've worked to bring people together for the common good. sometimes that means taking on and beating powerful special interests... like big oil, the nra and wall street. and i've done that. but sometimes it means finding common ground to get things done for marylanders. that's especially important now-- when so many seek to divide us. we must ensure that every child can succeed and build an economy that works for everyone. i approve this message because together we can get more things done. right now, hundreds of people are sitting in protest at the north carolina state house in

politicians, establishment guys, have to collude or get together to defeat a guy that speaks what the people want. >> the alliance is a necessity. if trump wins indiana next week, it is game over for cruz and kasich. it's not a sure thing that kasich's voters in indiana are going to support cruz. a fox poll over the weekend released shows trump leading cruz by eight points and kasich by 25. over half of voters said cruz would be their second choice. but 22% said i would be trump. taking kasich out of the equation doesn't guarantee a win for cruz. kasich is still on the state ballot, even though he is decided not to actively campaign. some kasich supporters have already cast their ballot for him. another way it could backfire, indiana is not trump's only
6:19 pm
trump could get shut out of indiana, but still win a majority of delegates at a first ballot at a convention. then there's the human factor. top campaign strategists worked out this whole cruz/kasich alliance, not the candidates themselves. in fact, just today kasich was out there saying he's not telling anyone how to vote. so we asked you to weigh in on the alliance and most of you feel this is going to end up helping trump rather than hurting him. >> thank you. a major boost to major league supports. the mayor is still trying to lure washington's football teams back to d.c. >> rert
