i'm angie goff here at the live desk. millions are on alert for strong storms again today. take a look at this video out of texas. this after huge hail and high winds hit the plains and midwest really hard the last couple of days. several tornadoes were reported in texas, indiana and kansas. thousands lost power in oklahoma. right now people in houston into parts of iowa are bracing for more bad weather. that's the latest from the live desk. breaking news on the road, we still have this problem here. not as bad as it was. southbound rockville pike at cedar lane still have some lanes shut down. northbound we have

will do. >> and a >> montgomery county police are an in wheaton.suspect in the police found him in the middle of center hill street around 9:30 last night near connecticut avenue and randolph road. the victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition. the man who authorities say fled a robbery scene and jumped a fence near the white house is in custody. the white house was briefly placed in lockdown around 4:00 yesterday afternoon while the president was there. the secret service says that man hopped a fence at the old executive office building. and an incredible find could help investigators fill in the blanks about the sinking ship el faro seven months after it went down in hurricane withjoaquin. 33 people were killed on board. the ntsb found the data recorder 15,000 feet below the surface yesterday. audio from the recorder will be the focus of the next round of

hearings. the hearings are s > says don't panic. kevin mcginnis got zika when visiting brazil. he said it was alarming with his skin cover in red dots but they didn't last long. and he said the disease was pretty painless. in fact, he and his family are planning to go back to brazil again this year. >> we'll probably use more bug spray than we have in the past. other than that, no other precautions. >> mcginnis said he understands zika should be a concern if you're pregnant. the cdc has all kinds of information about zika on its website. there's been about 400 cases of the virus reported here in the united states so far. all from people who traveled out of the country. it is now 5:14. plans to expand arlington national cemetery are up for discussion later today. the u.s. army corps of engineers is assessing land south of the current cemetery formally called the navy annex site. the expansion wouldre

mayor to act on washington they want paifami medical leave and a minimum wage increase to $15 an hour plus an increase in base pay for people who get the majority of their wages from tips. today's administration is set for 1:30 on the steps of the wilson building in northwest washington. alleypalooza kicks off today. this year the city has pledged to fix 64 alleys, which is about eight in each of the districts wards. breaking news on the roads, we have a problem southbound rockville pike. we still have a couple lanes shut down there. northbound we are entirely open here this morning at cedar lane. so no major worries there.

yesterday. and our average high now 71 degrees. and each one of the next seven days likely to be at or below average temperaturewise. so we have trade in the sunshine and the warm weather for low clouds and light rain showers. here's the view from our t in ba and chevy chase. all cloud cover this morning. visibility not taking too much of a hit with the low clouds out there. generally seven, eight, nine miles from washington and points northbound. better visibility out near the shenandoah valley. in st. mary's we have low clouds but a pocket of light rain showers there. a little bit of light rain in southern prince george's county, southern fairfax. most of the roads are still barely damp out there from the rain showers yesterday. but there's more rain coming, all these showers west of us, they are all coming in our direction, everybody. so have the umbrella handy. you will need

a woman was killed after she was shot on the highway by a child in the backseat of her car. this happened in milwaukee. the woman may have left a handgun under the edge of the driver's seat. it then slid to the back where the boy found it. the woman was 26 years old. two men are facing charges for stabbing a teenager in northwest washington. news4 was there as d.c. police put the men in handcuffs. the officers tell us they may have known the victim. this attack happened yesterday morning on 13th street in the petworth neighborhood just a few blocks away from roosevelt high school. construction workers tell us they couldn't help but hear the commotion. >> three cop cars came and then seven cop cars.

they were like, put yourup, put blank hands up. >> back there it was really, really loud. >> d.c. police say the victim should be okay. officers think the stabbing was the result of an ongoing argument. students who are about to start their college careers aren't improving. in fact, only 37% of them are ready for the coursework they face. that's according to new numbers about the naep, the standardized tests used all over the country. the latest results say high school seniors' math scores haven't improve in a decade. reading scores have gone down five points since 1992. the new chip cards, the credit card and debit card, are adding time at the cash register. turns out the new technology meant to keep your information safe is taking about 15 extra seconds at the checkout. now stores and credit card companies are working to try to cut down that time. >> any time we can improve the

it may be a little busier than rockville pike. melissa, good morning. i'm eun yang. >> i'm iraaron gilchrist. we'll tell you how to get to work this morning. erika gonzalez is live for us on rockville pike. >> reporter: good morning, aaron and eun. here's an update on now what we have is an update on the southbound lanes. traffic is flowing freely. there really is only one lane open. it turns into two once you get past the road crews. so please slow down as you approach the road crews. a lot of people are flying by. we're here at this intersection because around 1:00 this morning there was a 16-inch water mane break. we're at rockville pike and cedar lane. if that sounds at all familiar, it's because last october we covered a 16-inch water mane break that lasted for days as far as repairs were concerned. the good news is that traffic

able to turn off the water. on. are trying to pinpoint the location of the break. so that will take some time. but as you can see, the good news here, a big sigh of relief most lanes are open. but again, slow down as you approach the road crew. you'll hear from the spokesperson now. >> three to six in the winter months are common. but we could see anywhere from 75 to 150 in the summer months. so just because it's summer doesn't mean the water mains aren't going to break. but you're going to see an increased number in the winter. >> reporter: so there you see that large group of work crews there. and those folks being able to pass by there in one lane that later turns into two. this is rockville pike at cedar lane. so if you're coming off 270, this is very close to

yesterday morning. fairfax county police have alexandria woman who first reported a man was dead inside her apartment. police say jessica deneal-whalen strangled raymond white earlier in the mount vernon area. the two allegedly had a prior relationship. white was 51 years old. the funeral for fairfax county firefighter nicole mittendorf is sit for tomorrow. the visitation and funeral service will be held at 10:00 in the morning. mittendorf's body was found in the national forest more than a week after she disappeared. officials say she took her own life. instead of flowers, her family is asking for donations to two charities including the national suicide prevention lifeline. today former house speaker dennis hastert will learn his sentence in connection with breaking banking laws and lying to investigators. some people believe the sexual misconduct allegations against the republican could convince the judge to

court to ob mcdonnell is in the try and clear his name. news4's kristen wright is live with more on the effort from mcdonnelljail. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: justices will begin to hear arguments at 10:00 this morning. this appeal to the u.s. supreme court is mcdonnell's last chance to stay out of prison. mcdonnell was convicted of multiple counts of corruption and sentenced to two years in 2014. mcdonnell and his wife expected money and gifts from johnny williams while helping williams promote his dietary supplements. the former governor's attorneys argue the things he did for williams were routine political courtesy, not part of a bribery scheme. the high court will likely have a decision in june. here are the possible outcomes. the justices can uphold mcdonnell's conviction sending

grilling today. the employees are testifying on capitol hill today. the house oversight committee wants to know about misconduct in the agency including any mismanagement. this is part of a long investigation into problems at the tsa. last year the house questioned the tsa administrator about security problems. the montgomery county council has unanimously passed a measure that condemns controversial new laws in mississippi and north carolina. it also bans official county travel to those states. mississippi and north carolina enacted laws that deny services to people in the lgbtq community. one of the congested corridors in our region could get some relief. a new network of fast-moving buses with their own lanes and stations has been proposed along route 7 in northern virginia. it would stretch from
