good morning. starting off with showers coming through. you need your umbrella as we'll have the showers with us off and on throughout much of this sunday. right now looking at radar, all that moving color is rain. areas in yellow, it's coming a little bit harder. thunder and lightning in southern west virginia into eastern kentucky. closer to home, we have the showers all across virginia and maryland. the darker green coming down harder, but it's mostly light rain. all of this is tracking off to the north and east. going to be with us here throughout the morning. and then may break up a little bit this afternoon. i'll have new hour by hour timing on that coming up it if just a few minutes. temperatures right now are cool. it's down into the low 50s from the bay all the way to shenandoal

developing in texas, the death toll has risen to six after severe storms slammed the eastern part of the state. more than 7 inches of rain fell in less than an hour friday evening. it swamped a neighborhood forcing some people on to their roofs. police say about 35 homes sustained major damage. the red cross opened a shelter for people displaced by

they will be off tv now that the primary is behind us. and most things in this area are picked by the primary. big political news this week. chris van hollen, do thnna edwa race, a lot of interesting stuff went down. >> in the van hollen race against his opponent, donna edwards, there was a feeling that she had something of the bernie sanders touch, that the grass roots, the younger people, people that really wanted a change. chris van hollen did not plan on being the establish by and he was taken to task for it by donna brazile -- that's twice on in a row on donna. p donna edwards. but he was able to coalesce with the younger people,

and conddonna edwards were not happy. she pointed out that the maryland bosses were not for her, and this is the first time in a long time that there will be an all male congregation, delegation to come into capitol hill. but it was a hard-fought win and we will see where chris van hollen goes from here. probably into the senate because the republicans don't have that strong a challenger. >> a lot of talk was the after the election and what donna edwards had to say. and basically she's saying i'm putting the democratic party on notice. you're going to have a ticket here of democratic legislators that are all men unless the republican nominee for the u.s. senate wins that race. and she also talked about race. she really threw a molotov cocktail into the scene and she said, listen, you cannot come to churches singing the first two lines of lift every voice and sing. so she threw in

obviously she was not very happy. if you look at the numbers, chris van hollen -- she won -- you get to montgomery county, van hollen wins by 90,000 votes. yes, that is the region that she represents and she took baltimore city by about 17,000. but him taking i think montgomery county by 90,000 votes, we expected him to win the eastern shore which he did, but i think that made the difference in terms of if you look at the breakdown of numbers there. >> how was turnout? >> turnout was pretty high. i think they had like 1.6 million. >> i think the highest they have ever had. 46%. >> it usually is high in presidential races. but donna edwards may have given ammunition to the republican opponent because the republican opponent is a w

trumps the party. and the republican opponent who will be chris van hollen picked up on it the very next day. in veer interviews. so when you lose, the last thing you want to appear is that you have sour grapes. so you have to get behind your party because there is more at stake that be your disappointment. sgl >> the question is what is she looking for down the road, is she looking to be part of the establishment. one of the big issues is donna edwards was hoping to coalesce african-american votes, but the county executive from montgomery county, she did have the leaders of the prince george's county council behind her, but the executive from that county was

legislators were also behind chris van hollehollen. he brought the bacon, he was the money guy, so these leaders and these counties, if we need what we want, we may have to back the guy who we know can bring to us. >> and that ad did not help. the ad in which she was told to take down the nra ad. and where the white house says, wait a minute, that misrepresents us, that did not help at all. >> yeah, they had to bring the white house this against. pure sausage making. it's inside baseball. they wanted to get the disclose act that no fat cat could hide his contributions in a big money campaign donation. so the nra said, look, we don't want to have to it is close our people. and then they said, well, everybody knows who the nra is, what they're for. it's nothing secret about who they are aha

so van hollen said okay, we'll give you a buyout. and she decided that that was just selling out the store and she never gave up on it. but the thinking is that's how you get things done and you were just too critical of it. >> and the whole women's thing, hillary clinton got in trouble with this with madeleine albright and gloria steinem early on. i'm sorry, as a woman, i pay taxes, i live in my community, i drive these roads. i want the person that i think is going to get the job done and have some power, you know. i'm hot going to vote strictly on gender. that doesn't come into it for me and that's just me. is it a lot to expect women to vote for women and for minorities to vote for minorities? i find it almost offensive for someone to say to me as a woman i have to vote for another woman. >> i think most voters agree. >> and i think you

changing in this race with van hollen and donna edwards. nationally we saw donald trump came out and said no women like hillary clinton and only thing she has is the woman card. whoever wrote the line for her was powerful, she said if i'm for equal pay and equal right, then deal me in. playing on that. so in that sense, you can turn to say that i'm for everyone, but if i'm for a specific group of people to bring the playing field equal, then i think that is where that can be -- >> and it's an issue of public policy. it's about public policy. and that is the bottom line. and i think most people today are sophisticated enough to recognize that. >> especially in this area. we need to talk about the congressional race with matthews and raskin and trone and the way that thing shook out. we'll do that when get back.

a lot of interesting results this week. let's go to the anthony brown will be replacing donna edwards in her congressional seat. he did so poorly when he ran for governor and yet he did well in this. >> he learned his lesson from the governor race and that is that you don't depend on your party leaders for a vote. and that's why the state legislators sort of said forget it then, because they went to him and said, you know, this is what we want. this is what we need in order to given you support. and he sort of poo-pooed them, he put them off. >> that was in the governor's race. >> yes. and he learned from that. >> if he had won, he would have

african-american elected governor in maryland and he didn't want to run on that. he didn't want to say -- i don't need that. he did say what he learned in this election was that he had to knock on doors. and i was very surprised that he won. glen ivy was well-known within producing. but as we've talked about before, sometimes in these elections it's name recognition. though he didn't run a very good gubernatorial race, when you know to the polls, you still knew who anthony brown was. and secondly, medical nick tlny 19,000 votes and actually won in anne arundel county against ivey in brown. won by 4,000 votes. >> and also what happens is that you have

they hit the name they're most familiar with. you go, oh, wow, there are 16 or whatever and i'll go for the guy i'm most familiar with. >> i did do that when i'm voting to judges. >> and i'm i'll say that it's obvious that anthony brown ran a much different race. he got caught in the vortex of larry hogan the last time. hogan tapped into the discontent that trump and bernie sanders tapped into and nobody saw it coming downs pike. the democrats were overconfident and that was his prop. but now it's a different day. >> how will he run now in the general election. he won the primary for governor and then got to the general election against hogan and lost. >> he's a shoe-in. >> but we said that in the

a maryland family is heartbroken after learning the map who killed a park police officer more than 40 years ago could be released from prison. this is the result of a controversial court ruling in maryland. darcy spencer has more now on the story you'll only see here on news 4. >> it's just a tragedy. >> reporter: a tragedy that this man's cousin officer raymond hawkins was gunned down in a robbery thin 1971, a tragedy th the map who did it may get out of prison. >> we truly honestly thought that if you kill any officer of the law that you were going to be locked up and they throw the key away. >> reporter: the shooter, charles hopkins, had been sentenced to life without parole. but his conviction was recently overturned along with more than 100 other cases in maryland because of a flawed jury in-strugs. >> we were
