carries coal. it has derailed. cars immediately this side of that, we're looking south, immediately north of that are also off the rails. i'm told on the other side of that, what we can't see from here may be some tappinkers tha have also derailed that apparently have a chemical in them. we're told it reacts with water, it is an acidic type chemical. we certainly hope there is no airborne threat, but probably not the kind of thing you want to come into contact with. i spoke to a gentleman earlier who said that he heard what he thought might have been a plane crash. want to give you a view from another angle here. take a look at other video that we have. he says that he thought it was a plane crash. it was a very loud and sustained sound. and he came out it see exactly what was going on. we also talked to some folks who said that they are just having some trouble getting to

and 10, maybe as many as 11 trains derailed earlier this morning. >> and the big concern is about the chemical that is there. we heard it was sodium hydroxide, something that you might find in like draino or what not. what is the concern for anyone who is in that area right now? any evacuations for that area? >> absolutely not. they are not calling for at this time and i don't think we're going to at this point. we're not calling for any evacuations. we're not asking anyone to shelter in place. it looks like our guys have it pretty well contained. everything is running just the way we had hoped when we respond to things like this. we have two possibly three of the derail cars leaking some sort of hazardous material. exactly what that is,

you can see the rain falling, it continues to move southwest heading theeftd. we'll get one moderate area of some rain coming through in about another hour and then settling down during the afternoon. a look at the timing and as well as when we will finally see the sun return in a few minutes. developing right now in texas, the death toll has risen to six after severe storms la slammed the state. more than 7 inches fell in less than an hour. police say about 35 homes sustained major damage. and severe weather also slammed st. louis area where golf sized hail. you can see and hear the hail coming down. two inch sized hail shattered several car windshields. just an amazing scene.

but we've had many reports of pinout accidents, people going too fast and hitting those ramps. you lose traction especially if you have worn tires. the rain is continuing to fall. there is one wand of more moderate rain that is off to our west. it's a gusty pockets of yellow where it's coming down pretty hard now here in rappahannock county about to come into fauquier county. it stretches up farther north to mere winchester. all this coming into loudoun county, prince william county, fairfax, montgomery and the district. within about an hour. and we're just in the low to mid-50s. hour by hour timing, there that band of showers. it tracks across the eastern shore. things settle down this afternoon. maybe sprinkles and drizzle. but thundershowers bri 8:00 p.m.

we continue to follow this breaking news, csx train derailed in northeast washington causing this hazmat situation. that the point we know ten cars went off the tracks around 7:00 this morning. this is on rhode island avenue. >> and this is affecting traffic and metro. with more, let's get to terrick ward live from the scene. >> reporter: yeah, we're here on the franklin street bridge, i'll direct your attention down south looking at those tracks. you see the metro tracks sort of two the left and there on that easement under that footbridge there is the incident. as you said, about ten cars in-dweindeed off the tracks. we're told at least one is leaking a chemical that reagents with water. an acidic lye type chemical.

serious threat environmentally at the least immediately in this area. we've seen some csx people surveying the damage. and this all happened at about 7:00 this morning. and the folks that live around here say that they are quite used to hearing trains go through this area. it's something that they almost set their watch by especially this time of the morning. it's not unusual to hear trains, but what is unusual is to hear what a man heard this morning and this gentleman lives rather close to the track. listen. >> all of a sudden boom, boom, boom. about three different loud noise that i heard. and i seen them stop. >> reporter: so he came out to see what it was and he said when he saw those cars stop, he knew that it was something indeed out of the ordinary. metro traffic has been disrupted in this area,

these csx tracks run adjacent to the hemetro tracks. no word yet when service will be restored. >> we were told 94 were carrying mixed freight, one leaking sodium high drox eight. you've been on the ground there for about an hour. do you smell anything different in the air? what have you observed? >> reporter: when the air blows a certain way, when the wind comes to a certain direction, you almost detect a diesellike smell. that is only my point of reference. i can't tell you what those chemicals smell like under those ideal conditions. but you do something some out of the ordinary here. nothing that is an irritant considering where we are. i don't know if we're directly down wind. when there is a breeze cming a certain way, you to somethingwa something that

ordinarily smell. >> officials haven't fold us exactly what may have caused this, but you can sdrcan you de point on the tracks? it almost looked like there were two rail lines running into each oth other. >> reporter: yeah, we can take a look. if you look back down the tracks here, i can't a tell you -- they do seem to be some switch rails in that area. there are two adjacent lines there and this train seems to have been on one of the inner most lines there. there is a lot of switch rails on the metro tracks which are adjacent. the csx tracks, though, there a slight bend, but not a sharp turn. it's a pretty straight hear. in terms of access to these tracks, there is a bike path that runs in the

out of prince william county. so we'll see the moderate maybe briefly heavy downpours coming right through the metro area. a look at the timing and when we'll see the sun, that's coming up. we have new details on a d.c. homicide. police arrested 67-year-old wilbur whitaker and charged him with second-degree murder. he's accused of shooting leo hackett on saturday morning. hackett was taken to the hospital where he later died. police say they arrested whitaker shortly after that crime. transit police investigating a stabbing at the fagallery pla station yesterday. a man was stabbed on the platform, he is expected to survive, but they say he is not cooperating with deek difference detectives.

on some debris two days after the boat caps tomorrow the trial is set to begin against a man accused of killing a fellow university of mary washington student. steven briel is accused of the strangulation. the two had shared off campus housing with two other people. briel and his lawyers planned to use the insanity defense, but last week the judge denied their request. the trial is expected to last less than a week. it's a huge week coming up for metro. the national transportation safety board is meeting on tuesday to determine the probable cause of that deadly smoke episode at l'enfant plaza. the findings could have major implications for metro because metro could be forced to fix critical parts of its infrastructure. faulty power cables, water issues have all been talked about as major factors that contributed. 61-year-old carol glover of alexandria died in that incident. we have traffic alert to tell you about.

there is a plan to help one of the most congested corridors in our region, we're talking route 7 in northern virginia. a new network of fast moving buss with their own lanes is proposed from tysons corner to alexandria, but not all residents are on board with that new idea. >> reporter: thousands of commuters riding up and down route 7 in northern virginia on a new 11 mile transit system. >> route 7 is really northern virginia's main street and it's about time that we treat it like that. >> reporter: this may be the treatment that is coming. a network of fast moving buss with their own lanes and systems much like the system that opened along route 1 in arlington and alexandria. good idea? people here are split down the middle. >> it should be. it would eliminate some of the traffic. >> i don't know where the bus route would be if it's on route 7, it would create more traffic. >> i think we want to make the road far more usable forar

project is all about. >> reporter: the fact that buses were picked means that the project can change more easily as it navigates the landscape. >> it will link that whole part of northern virginia together in a way that the purple line is intended to do in maryland. >> reporter: right now the public getting a chance to weigh in and fine tune the project. after that, it's up to planners to find the money to pay for it and get it built. if it's done right, it could potentially get you to leave the car at home and let someone else do the driving p. wouldn't that be nice. a new series of public meetings was scheduled for june. a maryland family is heartbroken after learning the map who ki man who killed a park police officer more than 40 years ago could be released from prison. this is the result of a controversial court ruling in maryland. darcy spencer has the story you'll only see here on news 4.

>> it's just a tragedy. >> reporter: a tragedy that this man's cousin officer raymond hawkins was gunned down in a robbery in 1971, a tragedy that the man who did it may get out of prison. >> we truly honestly thought that if you kill any officer of the law that you were going to be locked up and they throw the key away. >> reporter: the shooter, charles hopkins, had been sentenced to life without parole. but his conviction was recently overturned along with more than 100 other cases in maryland because of a flawed jury instruction. >> we were devastated. again, it was something that we just could not believe. >> reporter: just this week, hopkins agreed to plead guilty to the murder and was sentenced to serve 65 years. the officer's family members say hopkins could be eligible for patrol in five years. hopkins now 64 years old apologized in court. >> it was surreal. totally surreal.
