>> and i'm pat lawson. doug, we're seeing something we haven't seen in days. sun. how is it going to impact the chances for storm this evening? >> you need that sun to get some of these thunderstorms to kick off. we haven't seen numbers like this in quite sometime. we've been rather dreary. now look at these numbers. 83 in roanoke. 84 in richmond. this very warm air is moving in. because of that, we do have storms that are also moving in as well. it is all just down to our south and west. severe thunderstorm watch for southwestern portions of virginia as well as southern portions of west virginia. that's a severe thunderstorm warning. we have some severe weather going on right now. so far all

that's when the domino effect starts. car after car crashing into each one. they start to pile up like a toy train set. now, crews are still trying to clean up the hazardous material and wreckage from a heavily populated neighborhood. has the derailment renewed the debate over regulating trains? >> reporter: it absolutely has in our area. this has been long debated not in just d.c., but in maryland and virginia as well. we're at the staging area right now. you can see the crews are still working on this cleanup where the train went off the track. they've been here since yesterday morning. the 175 car train came off the tracks as it was passing the rhode island avenue station sunday morning. two of those cars

the spills have been contained, but clean up of the area and repair to the track is ongoing. >> some of the soil in the track area was contaminated with sodium hydroxide. we're going to remove all of that soil and dispose of it in a federally approved man. >> reporter: while the spill did not impact the environment or public safety, residents were concerned when they saw freight cars marked as carrying chlorine, a chemical that's not to be transported through the nation's capitol. >> reporte those cars on the train that were marked with chlorine were actually empty. coming up at 5:00, we're going to show you more of this newly released vehiclef

train went off the tracks. chris, back to you. >> all in all some scary stuff. we are learning more about the dramatic events and scare at a baltimore tv station. police have now identified the three s.w.a.t. team members who shot the man. one is a sergeant who's been on the force for 29 years. the other two are a 23-year-old veteran and a 6 year veteran. alex brizzi walked into wbff's lobby last week. first at 4, a new investigation just got under way after a fire broke out a few hours ago at an assisted living home in laurel. this happened just

meagan fitzgerald joins us live from the scene. what you learned about this so far? >> reporter: the owner of this assisted living facility says she was in her kitchen cooking when all of a sudden the frying pan caught on fire, forcing four disabled or elderly patients and their caretakers out of the home. the fire started just before 12:30. nearly 30 firefighters rushed to the scene and helped four patients to get out. fire officials say crews tore through some of the walls in the kitchen to make sure the fire didn't reignite. mark brady says three of the four disabled residents were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, but says no one was injured. >> the fire grew in intensity enough to the point that the residential sprinkler system activated. we had to shut off the

to the home. >> reporter: the owner of this business says she is working on securing a hotel for her patients so he'she'll be able te there along with the caretakers. coming up at 5:00, we'll tell you what fire investigators say they found when they entered the home and why it will be several weeks before this business will be able to operate here. back to you. we are a day away from another crucial primary in the presidential race. all eyes now on indiana to see how well donald trump will do. his main republican rival suggests it doesn't matter. senator ted cruz is promising to stay in the race even if he loses indiana. if cruz can't win tomorrow, it drastically narrows his chances of having a contested republican convention in july. the latest poll puts the odds in trump's favor. he leads cruz by 15 points and governor john kasich by 36. we're seeing a much tighter race on the democratic side.

former secretary of state hillary clinton is leading senator bernie sanders by four points with a margin of error of 4.6%. a lot of you in virginia's cities and towns will be heading to the polls tomorrow. in the city of fairfax, the mayor is facing a challenge. they're also holding elections in clifton, vienna, haymarket, and quantico. why tomorrow will be a very telling day for the agency as it tries to overcome widespread safety concerns. rain, wind, even hail could be headed our way. storm team 4 i ins

finally some sunshine after a sixth consecutive day with clouds and drizzle and light showers. here we are with a weather alert day. right now, severe thunderstorm watch around charlottesville to the south. that extends all the way down to areas through southern west virginia, even kentucky. the weather this evening will have a moderate to high impact on our area. it will be stormy until late. we're talking about midnight, 1:00 a.m. in the morning. there could be quite a bit of rain coming down in a short period of time. we're thinking rainfall amounts somewhere between 1 and 2 inches in the watch

a lot of heavy rain coming our way, so we'll take a look at a timeline for this evening as well as tomorrow morning where it still could be raining across the area in just a few minutes. first at 4, opening statements are under way at the trial of a former university of mary washington student. steven is accused of killing grace mann, who helped lead a group known as feminists united. those housemates found her dead last april. his attorney is using an insanity defense. this afternoon investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire that gutted an historic cathedral in new york city. the fire broke out sunday night at a serbian orthodox cathedral, which dates back to the 1850s. worshippers were celebrating orthod

earlier, but no one was actually inside when the fire started. it was a chaotic situation under the streets of d.c. now more than a year after the smoke filled the metro train. we're about to learn a lot more about what happened, but the question is, will it

in our direction. doug kammerer to going to give us an update in just a few minutes. the national transportation safety board will release the probable cause of that deadly l'enfant plaza train incident. >> reporter: this will be the clearest indication of what exactly went wrong. when they determine a cause, they nail down exactly what went wrong. you'll probably hear some things about water and the actual infrastructure here that caused that smoke event

train. >> adam, you also talked to the attorney representing carol glover's family. what's his take on this? >> reporter: his take is simply that metro isn't doing what it needs to do to maintain the system. patrick reagan told us that today. take a listen. >> that's absolutely the top of the list to see what just preventive maintenance they were doing. they were apparently, from what we have been told by our experts, they were just ignoring it. they weren't doing any preventive maintenance. >> reporter: yeah, so he says that this was an incident that simply could have been prevent f ed from the top to the bottom. 41-year-old carol glover never would have died. he's waiting to get his lawsuit started. he just needs this ntsb hearing to wrap up for probable cause. >> in light of this hearing, do you expect metro

out and make any immediate fixes? >> reporter: so what happens, pat, when the ntsb does these hearings is they usually make safety recommendations right in on the hearing. what metro has to determine is how they're going to go about and fix those things that the ntsb has said, but they are not forced to do those things. there are previous hearings that metro has gone through where certain issues still have not been fixed. all right. we want to turn to our weather now and the storms that are moving our way. you can see them coming in on storm team 4 radar. doug, do you think we can make through the evening rush before the storms start to hit? >> yeah, chris, i really do. most of these storms are well down to our south and west

region, so that's some good news for those of us who are expecting loved ones to be coming home from work tonight. as far as temperatures go, finally back into the 70s, even the 80s. 77 dulles. 75 in gaithersburg. a very mild, very warm afternoon, the warmest we've seen since the early part of last week. radar not showing anything. we don't expect these to start to develop until after 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tonight. severe thunderstorm watch in effect for southwestern portions of virginia. you can see these storms firing up. more storms back toward the west. notice these red boxes. these are flash flood warnings. they're all going to move into our area over the next few hours. the bigger thing is this train of moisture goes all the way back down to the gulf of mexico, and that's the kind of moisture we have moving our way, so we're going to see a lot of rain over the next 24 hours. future weather, timing this out fo

starting to see a couple here. a couple of storms back to our west. a couple through parts of northern virginia. around 10:00, 11:00, that's when they move on through the region. some of them producing some very heavy rainfall. over night, we continue to get the heavy rain. more heavy rain moving in. by early tomorrow morning, things are going to be really, really wet across the region. we've seen a lot the last couple of days. we may get 1 to 2 inches of rain total. if you're going to be out and about tomorrow afternoon, we start to see a little bit of clearing here. we're not going to see much. i don't expect much sunshine at all. another round of shower activity tomorrow night. this is going to be a fairly rainy period over the next several days. no real tornado risk with this. it is high winds and hail. the potential is there for flooding, but that is onhe

then you have all the music and prince years ago. he was very fastidious about taking control of his master recordings, which he did. then you have all the unreleased music that you have heard about. one of his old producers told us he's been in there. he's seen them. thousands of songs that have not been released yet, so the estate will be worth tons. the judge has to appoint brimmer trust in minneapolis to sort of look after the estate until they found a will. right now, the judge in court says does anyone know of an existing will here and it was dead silence. looks like the money will be split up between the siblings. he has one full sibling. then he has five other halves. there you go. they'll all have a pile to

now at 4:30, get ready for storms this evening. we're tracking severe weather that's moving into the area. >> it's a weather alert day for storm team 4. veronica johnson has been tracking the timing and the intensity of these storms. what do you say, v.j.? >> i'm saying late evening storms. we get through this evening rush just fine. after 6:00, 7:00 around culpeper and areas down through that southwest pocket of virginia, that's when the storms will make their way on in. it will be stormy, but not until probably late. 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, there will be storms coming through producing some lightning and the potential of some hail and high winds. what we will see is quite a bit of rain with this. temperatures coming down from the upper 70s to the lower 70s by 10:00. those evening strong thunderstorms. some rain

midnight. then this week cooler and unsettled. today our warmest day out of the workweek. there's our severe thunderstorm watch. you can see it in the pink. it goes all the way to areas of southern west virginia and down through western north carolina and eastern tennessee where they're also watching out for some of these strong storms to make their way in. by 11:00, we continue with storms. mid 60s for temperatures. 1:00 a.m., mid 60s with some rain. we'll tell you how much rain your neighborhood could get. it's a pivotal primary in the presidential race. there are ten states left. >> but tomorrow's contest in indiana is the biggest until next month when we get out to california. donald trump is leading in the polls and that's why ted cruz has five stops there today. >> steve handelsman is live in indianapolis with the latest. steve? >> reporter: hi, pat and chris. just outside indianapolis, you can

live in carmel, indiana. virginia's governor is being sued over allowing convicted felons to vote in november. they say the action violates the state constitution and they say it is a employ to get more votes for his friend hillary clinton in november. republicans say two previous governors, including tim kaine, determined they did not have the authority to make this move. mcauliffe says people who have served their time deserve a second chance. well, we are all getting ready for a big playoff game for the caps tonight in pittsburgh. the penguins won here in washington, so they're all up at a game apiece. washington fighting somewhat of an uphill battle. >> reporter: on the eve of game three, thehi

a bike ride? yeah, you've got to problems. the next two hours i don't expect anything in our region for the most part, especially north and east of d.c. if you're south and west, starting to get into what we're seeing here. this is where we're seeing some of that severe weather. severe thunderstorm watch in effect down there. no watch in our area. most of this activity will come after the sun goes down, so we may see some strong storms. i'm not anticipating a lot of severe weather here though. one thing we will see is look at all of this rain. this is going to be a lot of rain overnight tonight. some locations picking up 1 to 2 inches of rain. veronica has that seven-day forecast in just a minute. all right. breaking news now at the live desk. police in prince george's county investigating a homicide in brandywine this afternoon. they got a call about a shooting

rain, wind, even hail. right now they're quickly moving into the washington area. >> storm team 4 is calling this a weather alert for tonight and all this sunshine is just going to make things worse. >> veronica johnson is here now with the forecast. veronica, which neighborhoods are expecting could get the worst of this? >> the worst of it will be just south and west of d.c. as those storms come in, come in early enough where we still have t

right now we're 86 in winchester. 81 in manassas. you can almost draw a line where through some of the strongest storms will be when they first start to come in. low to mid 80s here, even though we're in the mid to upper 70s. we'll still have some strong storms coming through our area throughout the overnight period, probably just past midnight. as we get into the evening hours, we'll drop to the mid 70s in most neighborhoods, even those areas that have will have the storms rolling in. the temperatures 60 degrees with clouds back in the area. we had six days back to back with cloud cover across the area. take a look at the areas shaded in pink. those counties, that's where your severe thunderstorm watch is that goes up until 10:00 p.m. rocki rockingham

county. all storms advancing north and northeastward to our area. we're doing to see quite a bit of a rain, moderate to heavy. around 9:00 a.m., those areas in blue, could be more than an inch. the areas up to the north, frederick, westminster, baltimore, more than 2 inches. we're expecting between 1 to 2 inches in some locations. as far as the wind goes, those winds could be quite gusty allowing some limbs to come down and blowing around some of the garbage out there as well. the potential for some small hail. again, lightning. by tomorrow morning, it is just showers that will be moving through the area. and a few showers, too, even for tomorrow afternoon. not expecting any storms for tuesdayr

workweek. here we are at 10:00. you can see some of the storms coming into the area and moving on through. as far as tomorrow goes, that's the change. we see our temperatures drop again. we say in the low to mid 60s for the remaninder of the workweek. some scattered showers across the area and mainly light. 65 degrees for tomorrow. 40% chance of rain. 40% chance of a few light showers moving through on wednesday, mid to upper 60s. the end of the week -- we're getting tired of this. showers for thursday, even friday. as we get into the weekend, yes, we get back to some sunshine on saturday and a chance for some more rain on sunday. again, the very latest here as we continue to wait for the storms to come into our area. most of which will be after about 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. we have more on the weather alert day

severe weather has been affecting people across the country. take a look at the piles of hail that were falling in indianapolis yesterday. some areas saw up to ten inches of hail. ten inches. ice balls cause plenty of damage to cars and homes. downtown south, people in lake charles, louisiana, continue to cleanup after torrential rain fell over the weekend. boats were needed to rescue folks from their homes. look at all that water. customers getting the cold shoulder from starbucks. a lawsuit just filed against starbucks claims its underfills its cold drinks. they're adding too much ice. >> as a long time ice mocha fan, this hurts. this hurts. >> it goes to the core, doesn't it? you remember that whole mcdonald's lawsuit back in the 90s. the lawsuit was filed because their coffee was too hot. now a starbucks customer

packed with too much ice. she is demanding $5 million from the company. the lawsuit says because of the amount of ice starbucks uses in their iced beverages, customers often end up with the half of the amount of drink that is listed on starbucks menus in fluid ounces. the lawsuit gives an example of an iced veni coffee. you only get 14 ounces. it alleges that starbucks is tricking customers into paying for more product than what they provide them with. starbucks says it will gladly remake a drink if a customer the not satisfied. another lawsuit was just filed back in march by two

history is being made as this cruise ship becomes the first in more than a half century to sail from miami to havana, just 262 miles. but until now, it might as well have been lightyears. it's the maiden voyage to cuba of fathom's adonia. american passengers about to step on cuban soil. a country most u.s. citizens have been forbidden to visit since 1963. >> we want to be part of history. it's an honor. >> reporter: the cuba they will see has many americans anxious to get here before it all changes. >> i want to get there before burger king shows up. >> reporter: the voyage almost didn't happen. an old cuban law still on the books banned anyone from coming aboard the island from sea. the law changed. ana garcia, who
