nbc national correspondent peter alexander. he is in indianapolis this morning. good morning. >> good morning to you. a steady stream of voters arriving here early this morning. in indiana, the polls opened a short time ago. ted cruz got the one-on-one matchup with donald trump he wanted, but trump is looking for his seventh straight win. if the numbers hold, by this time tomorrow, the general election matchup could be all but set. >> reporter: donald trump rallying the faithful near notre dame, looking to rack up a decisive win. >> indiana is becoming very important. it's called importantville. >> reporter: many americans are turning their attention to the fall. the newest online poll shows trump narrowing the gap with hillary clinton, trailing her by six points. 20% of voters still undecided. despite charges of sexism, trump is revisiting his rant against clinton for showsing at her events. >> if she was a man, i could say it. as a woman,

his job as a coal worker, that's getting a lot of attention this morning. andrea mitchell has more on that. good morning. >> good morning, matt. it was that conversation, a round table here in west virginia, when the unemployed coal worker pressed clinton hard on comments she'd made about the coal industry. remarks, she said, that didn't accurately reflect her efforts to help the area hit hard by job losses. >> reporter: while looking for mine support in trump-friendly coal country, hillary clinton in a candid moment on the campaign trail -- >> i do feel a little bit sad and sorry i gave folks the reason or excuse to be so upset with me. that is not what i intended at all. >> reporter: the democratic front runner apologizing to a father of three, bo copley, who recently lost his job at a coal company. >> unfortunately, my circumstan circumstance,

as pleasant as what everyone else's is. >> reporter: fighting back tears as he confronted clinton about comments she'd made earlier this year at an ohio town hall. >> we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business. >> i just want to know how you can say you're going to put a lot of coal miners out of jobs, and then come in here and tell us how you're going to be our friend. >> i have been talking about helping coal country for a very long time. >> reporter: clinton says her remarks were taken out of context, as she touted the $30 billion plan she had announced last year to help the struggling coal community. >> what i was saying is that the way things are going now, we will continue to lose jobs. i didn't mean we were going to do it. what i said was, that is going to happen unless we take action to try to help and prevent it. >> clinton went on to say that she knows she faces an uphill battle with the voter

region. as for copley, who is a republican, he says he doesn't know who he'll vote for, but that he does not feel swayed by her apology. interesting and candid moment. unusual moment on the campaign trail. >> certainly is. andrea, thanks very much. mike murphy, adviser to the jeb bush campaign and now an nbc news political analyst. mike, good morning to you. let's start on the gop side. indiana is important because of the calendar but it is a microcosm, isn't it, of the gop. you have conservatives, blue collar americans. is that why it counts? >> every kind of republican is there. theoretically, if cruz is going to stop trump, midwestern state like that is not trump's home region. it's more open field playing ground. he should be able to do it. if the polling is right, and it probably is, trump will have a good night. it's not only delegates now. it's the phycology. trump is a steam rolling going on, which could be the p

200 more troops to iraq to battle isis. southern states are still having a rough go of it this morning after days of heavy rain and flash flooding. there is more on tap today up and down the east coast now. dylan is in for al this morning. we're feeling it this morning. >> up and down the east coast, it is not going to be a nice day. we also have the flooding concerns down south because all of that water we've seen recently is still trickling into the rivers. for example, the red river in sheave po shreveport, louisiana, is going to rise until thursday and then recede. up and down the east coast yesterday, strong storms in maryland and virginia. reports of tennis-ball and baseball-sized hail. today, a similar situation with the stalled front producing steady showers across the northeast. they'll last until noon, then it'll become more showery later this afternoon. a line of strong storms moving to northeastern

columbia, south carolina, most of north carolina, even into southern virginia, we could see severe hail, damaging wind gusts. we could pick up one to two inches of rain. flash flooding possible. i think hail, again, is going to be the big story. >> dylan, we'll check back in in a moment. johnson & johnson is ordered to pay $5 million to a woman who claimed that using the company's talcum powder products caused her to develop ovarian cancer. natalie is following the story. >> it is a $55 million settlement. it's the second straight trial loss for the company this year. it is facing about 1,200 other lawsuits, accusing it of not adequately warning consumers of the talc-based products cancer risk. >> reporter: johnson & johnson, the world's largest maker of health care products, in hot water again. ordered to pay $55 million to a 62-year-old south dakota woman who blamed her ovarian cancer on the company's talcum powder. gloria

j&j's products for four decades. according to her lawyer, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had to undergo a hysterectomy and related surgeries. her cancer is now in remission. this decision comes just over two months after another case against johnson & johnson in which $72 million was awarded to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after years of using talc powder for feminine hygiene. ristesund's lawyer claims johnson & johnson documents show the company knew of health concerns regarding the use of talcum powder since the mid-1970s. johnson & johnson claims there is nol link between its product and ovarian cancer. >> we are confident in our position, that there is no causal association between talc and ovarian cancer. product safety is and will continue to be our highest priority. >> in a statement, johnson & johnson says, we will appeal the receer

is not known to have left a will. he was found dead april 21st. prescription painkillers were found on prince's body and inside his paisley park estate. want to show you amazing video of american servicemen in south korea who helped coordinate the rescue of three young children. the u.s. soldiers and airmen were at a nearby shopping center when they heard a commotion. they saw a mom holding a baby out of a window four floors up, as smoke came out of the window. the servicemen gathered blankets, spread them out and caught the children as the woman dropped them one by one. the kids all okay. the mother suffered non-life threatening injuries. >> good for them. the road to rio. the olympic torch arrived in brasilia. this is the first day of the torch relay on the host country's soil. more than 12,000 relay runners

alcohol, caffeine before bed, avoiding the blue light of devices before bed. >> no naps. tell someone who hasn't had any sleep all night that they shouldn't get a half hour of sleep during the day. it sounds impossible. >> sounds impossible. one of the parts of the behavioral change is sleep restriction. they do do that. they say, no naps, and you have to go to bed late for a short period of time. it induces sleep depravation early on, but ultimately, it breaks the cycle. you're more tired and you'll sleep more soundly. >> is there a larger concern, that taking the sleep medications for a prolonged period of time cannot be recommended? >> actually, the fda only approves, wants the medications to be taken for about four to five weeks at a time. they can be associated with serious adverse effects. cognitive behavioral therapy, aka, non-medication therapy, as well as being non-invasive, is really not associated with very much harm. it's six to eight

we're back at 8:39. teens are spending more and more time on mobile devices. do they feel addicted? >> revealing new report coming out today. nbc's joe fryer got an early look at the findings. >> reporter: in the car, walking down the street, even in the classroom, you see teens who can't seem to put down their mobile devices. do they feel addicted? 50% of 12 to 18-year-olds surveyed by common sense media say yes. >> 60% of parents believe their kids are addicted to their phones and mobile devices. another issue we found is that this is a major source of conflict and tension in families. >> reporter: 77% of parents say during family time, kids are distracted by devices and don't pay attention at least a few times a week. it goes both ways. 41% of teens say the same thing about their parents. >> carly, tyler,
