we are suspending our campaign. >> and with that concession, donald trump becomes the likely republican presidential nominee. trump called senator ted cruz's choice to drop out brave. governor john kasich tweeted that texas was lucky to have a leader like him. cruz told voters in indianapolis yesterday his campaign left it, quote, all on the field but that he had no path to the nomination. now trump's dl delegate total is at 1,095. a different story for the democrats, senator bernie sanders upset hillary clinton beating her in indiana's democratic primary. that adds 43 delegates to sanders' total. clinton, however, has 92% of the delegates needed to take the democratic nomination and is nearly 800 delegates ahead of senator sanders. now our election coverage isn't all about the president's race. we have the results

minutes. we have an emergency situation out of canada where people are fleeing their homes trying to escape a raging wildfire. take a look at the flames here. the province of alberta ordering evacuations of an entire city as the winds and the temperatures continue to pick up. it's believed that more than 80,000 are leaving after a whole neighborhood was destroyed. more firefighting help is on the way now. that's the latest, eun, back to you. thank you, angie. 5:03, new video this morning showing the man a moment is taken into custody by d.c. police after stabbing a metro bus driver, hijacking that bus and then hitting and killing a pedestrian. keith loving was on the bus around 10:30 yesterday morning along jay street northeast. he attacked the driver with a needle-nose pliers. the driver managed to get off the bus and loving drove a short distance been

into a parking lot where he allegedly hit anthony payne who later died. cathy lanier says this is a bizarre attack. >> very uncharacteristic for someone to attack a bus driver. >> some bus riders say metro isn't doing enough to keep them safe. metro has started installing o protective shields with a barrier between the driver and a potential attacker. right now there are about 326 buses with shields. by the end of the year more than 500 will be fitted with the new safety feature. that is about a third of the metro fleet. some welcomed news this morning from mark passengers. for the first time this week you can take a brunswick train into the district. regular service resumes on that line today but there may be some delays. on sunday a csx train derailed near the rhode island metro station in northeast causing a chemical spill. coming up at 5:30, news4's erika gonzalez

station to let us know if the trains are running on time. sunday's derailment and the hazmat situation will be the talk of the federal railroad administration. yesterday officials said they removed the soil affected by the hazmat situation. officials will also discuss what kind of chemicals are allowed to travel through the district. some of us are going to be glued to the big game, the caps are playing the pittsburgh penguins in the big game four tonight. the playoffs begin at 8:00. the caps have lost two games in a row now to put them on the brink of elimination. however, the players say that does not make this a must-win. >> a lot of people expected us to win every series 4-0, 4-1, and it's just not going to happen. they are too good. >> the penguins defenseman chris

no worries there. a live look at prince george's county coming up. thank you, your time is 5:12. two shootings in a matter of hours are fraying nerves in the petworth neighborhood. someone fired more than a dozen shots on eighth street northwest. below in the second box there's another shooting scene a half mile away. this time the gunshots were deadly. d.c. police say a man died after someone shot him hear. they brought canines to the scene and towed away a white ford mustang yesterday at 4:00 afternoon. this happened on illinois avenue near the intersection of allison street northwest. cathy lanier is asking anybody for help. >> anybody in this scene a quarter to 4:00 or after 4:00 that may have seen someone running from the scene to match the description, we are looking for additional information you can give us. >> police are not saying whether the shooting on illinois avenue is related to the on

happened hours later near eighth and decatur streets. d.c. police were back in the petworth neighborhood around 8:00 last night responding to calls that someone fired at least 14 shots. it does not appear the bullets hit anyone. a prince george's county police officer has been suspended without pay. this comes after a grand jury indicted francesco merlett. he spanked his girlfriend's child after the 3-year-old had an accident in the bed in december. the force of the spanking caused the child to hit his head on a wall and lose consciousness. the court date has not been set. developing news on the faulty takata air bags. government sources tell nbc news the company may have to recall as many as 35 million more air bag inflaters. this is on top of the 29 million already recalled. those inflaters can explode with too much force and spray metal shards. at least 11 people have died worldwide and more than 100 people have been hurt. back to decision 2016 no

son killed his housemate. she also said her son believed his housemates were trying to kill him. a shocking revolution about metro safety. the national transportation safety board says in the past metro routinely used trains full of passengers to root out smoke and fire issues. metro sent out a tweet yesterday saying that was not the case. the hearing held yesterday was primarily to release the official cause of the deadly smoke incident. a short circuit was not addressed because of lack of inspections. the manager says he has more challenges ahead. >> my first reaction is for the families and the victims. that's what i feel. clearly, again, it reinforces the challenges i'm up against. >> the ntsb says the only way to get metro back on track is to substantially ramp up strong oversight of metro safety. a formerta

going to jail for decades. the grand jury indicted emily fallon on monday on six felony counts including embezzlement. she's accused of stealing money while the pto president at anne moncure elementary school. she resigned last friday. the investigation started last year when the pto alerted the sheriff's office to significant bookkeeping irregularities. i'm tom sherwood in the district. have you ever maxed out your credit cards so much so that the company cut you off? it happened to the district this past winter during the big blizzard of late january. the city scrambled to hire private contractors to remove the snow to speed things up. but it put millions of dollars on the credit card so much so that jpmorgan cut off the city's credit. the administrator rashaad young tells nbc4 the credit was quickly restored. >> that was less than 24 hours. we talked to

released very quickly. so it really was a non-issue from our business operations. >> reporter: the issue arose because some companies that didn't accept credit cards still haven't been paid. the council was expected to approve those payments next month. 5:35. the debate over the future development of bethesda's westbard neighborhood is over. yesterday montgomery county council unanimously approved the plan to create 22 acres of new retail and housing space at the westwood shopping center. opponents worry that plan will mean increased traffic and overcrowded schools. supporters say the change has been a long time coming. >> the community will be a more lively commute community, a greater community, a more prosperous community. >> we are disappointed. we spent the last year and a half begging the council to listen to the citizens. this council will not listen to the citizens. they do what they want to do. >> the plan also includes affordable housing. the developer says it is looking

new developments about prince this morning and the investigation into his death. the new report from "the minneapolis star tribune" says the singer was scheduled to meet with a doctor a day after his death. >> according to the report the doctor was going to talk to prince about an addiction to painkillers. the doctor set up the meeting because prince's lawyer called him to say prince was dealing with a, quote, raised medical emergency. this is coming from "the star

perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the virus. but they are concerned a lot of the poor areas don't have the money to attack the infest. so far congress has not approved requests for emergency zika funding. >> if we spray an aerosol of insecticides up and down the street like we do in the u.s. or out of airplanes in some locations, those insecticides are not likely to penetrate into people's houses. >> in september the national institute of health will start a human trial on a zika vaccine. the white house has asked for nearly $2 billion to fund further research. 5:48. in a consumer watch this morning, check your freezers. crf frozen foods is expanding their recall of frozen vegetables because of a listeria outbreak. eight people game sick after eating the frozen veggies. the recall started last month and now includes all organic and traditional frozen vegetables and fruit products processed in the company's pasco,

facility since may of 2014. and johnson and johnson will appeal a settlement over their most iconic products. the jury awarded they will pay out $55 million to a woman who says the baby powder gave her cancer. health experts say there's no hard evidence to prove that talc in powder causes cancer. a bethesda school went on lockdown after a student brought a bb gun to the campus. this happened at westland middle school yesterday. around noon the staff member discovered the student had a bb gun in the locker. the police were called and the school went into lockdown. they found the bb gun was unloaded and took the student to the police station. the principal says students were never in danger. there's a building in arlington with an amazing view of the monument that needs some help. the northern virginia bureau reporter david culver received a special look inside the
